The yearly volumes of Censored, in continuous publication since 1976 and since 1995 available through Seven Stories Press, is dedicated to the stories that ought to be top features on the nightly news, but that are missing because of media bias and self-censorship. The top stories are listed democratically in order of importance according to students, faculty, and a national panel of judges. Each of the top stories is presented at length, alongside updates from the investigative reporters who broke the stories.
I didn't get as much out of this book because I'm simply not that well read when it comes to issues going on right now. This book is very informative but sometimes it felt like I was reading Latin because I didn't know what the issue was to begin with. Worth flipping through at a bookstore but not the 20 doll-hairs to buy.
great series by journalism graduate students, who select important news items each year that don't make it into the establishment press. Can't recall the exact contents of the one I'm reviewing, but examples include the year that the Second Congo War surpassed 5M dead featuring exactly no coverage in the big US news organs.
every year i go through this book and get pissed-off 25 times for every story that has been buried. great series and a great research tool with good documentation (not every story is perfect-- there is doubt about the six lane super highway scheduled to run through duluth).
This whole series is dedicated to the arguably ranked top 25 under reported stories from the indicated year. The criteria is outlined in the intro. File under "Stories found on page A23".
