Written by one of Hawaii's favorite storytellers and collector of tales supernatural in Hawaii, this book rings. With its ethnic and cultural diversity, Hawaii's tales of the supernatural are rich indeed. Up until his death, Grant devoted his life's work to researching Hawaii ghost stories. This book moves along, and the reader does not know if the stories are for real or not.
Genuinely terrifying tales. I was first exposed to this as a child on vacation in Hawaii. Later, as an adult and a lover of horror literature, I tried to revisit this book to prove to myself that it wasn't so scary after all. To be safe I chose to reread it on a bright sunlit train, full of other people. My strategic choice of location did nothing to quell my growing terror. Truly a great collection of ghost stories!! Hawaii is utterly haunted and terrifying.
I cannot read this book at night. I think what makes it so terrifying for me is that these are true accounts, including one that happened to the author. I grew up in Hawaii so I can picture these things happening. It goes to show that Hawaii is not all sunshine and beaches.
