For the Japanese impaired, the book is Tabi ni Deyou, Horobiyuku Sekai no Hate Made (Our Journey to the Edge of the Ceasing World by Tadahito Yorozuya
Our Journey to the Edge of the Ceasing World is an episodic novel -- really three novellas, though they were written as a piece -- about a world in which most of humanity has disappeared. Literally disappeared. Not all at once. This is more of a plague. First the people around a victim forget his name (which also disappears from all written and electronic records), then he turns black and white like an old movie. Eventually even his shadow disappears, and then he does as well. By the time the story starts, only a handful of people are left in the world, and it seems all them are displaying at least some of the symptoms.
The narrative follows the Boy and the Girl (no names given) as they travel through Hokkaido. Why? Well, what else is there to do after the end of the world except walk the Earth like Caine in Kung Fu? Just walk from place to place, meet people, get in adventures. Actually, they have a Honda Super Cub, though when we first meet them they are on foot due to a breakdown. And "adventures" is pushing it. Really, they just meet people and have conversations.
The first story is about the Boy and the Girl stopping at a farmhouse after their bike breaks down and meeting the Director of a Tokyo company and his Secretary. They eat some corn. The boy takes a bath. That's the story. To be fair, this section of the book is establishing setting. The next tale takes place a few days later when the Boy and the Girl stop at a warehouse to escape the rain and discover the Boss there. The Boss was part of a team constructing a human powered airplane to fly the English Channel. The Boy and the Girl decide to help him assemble the plane so he can at least make one test flight before disappearing. The end. In the final story, the Girl gets sick from riding in the rain and the Boy has to find a town he heard about where survivors have gathered. Despite some suspense early on about whether the town will welcome strangers, the place might as well be Mayberry, RFD. The Girl receives treatment and the Boy meets another girl, called the Princess, who suffers a weak heart in addition to being in the final stages of the Vanishing.
Most of the interest in the stories is generated by the guest stars, how they're dealing with their situation, and how the Boy and the Girl help them. But while there are some touching moments involving the Boss and the Princess, their stories ultimately lack any momentum. Nor are the philosophical implications of the situation really explored -- what does it mean to exist, why is it important for people to remember us after we're gone, what's the purpose of living when the world is dying. Kiyoshi Kurosawa got great mileage out of a similar premise in his film Kairo (Pulse) and it's a shame Yorozuya didn't at least make an effort (the afterword claims he wrote the book in under a month for the Dengeki Novel competition, and it really shows -- if he'd had the time to revise it, I think the book would've been improved considerably). It's all enjoyable enough, but it's missing the salt and pepper. I wouldn't mind seeing further tales in this world (the book ends with two sequel hooks, though since it came out in '08 and there's been no followup yet, I'm guessing we're not going to see either), but only if Yorozuya comes up with something with a bit more narrative weight to carry the story forward.
On a final note, the novel hasn't recieved (and probably never will) a proper English translation. I had to settle for a fan translation. Fan translations are hit-or-miss, and this one is mostly miss. It's readable despite some typos, but it's stiff and over-literal. Since the afterword mentions the book was a finalist for the Dengeki Novel Award, I'm prepared to admit that the quality of the writing might be better in the original Japanese, but I doubt it's enough to counter the narrative weaknesses of the story.

The Translated title of this book is Our Journey to the Edge of the Ceasing World. That is much better! This book was strongly recommended to me by my son Dylan, who is into all things Japanese...video games, anime, books, music...you name it. This is the first time he recommended a book to me and I jumped at it. He knew that the premise would pull me right in, and he was not mistaken. Something is going around. Is it a virus? No one knows but people start to disappear. It happens in stages...first they forget their name. Then other people forget your name. Then their name disappears from print. Then gradually you lose color.....and disappear. Interesting, right? Yes, it should be.
The story focuses on a young teenage couple. They can't remember their names, so they call each other boy and girl. They can't remember if they were anything more than friends. What they do know is that they are traveling together "to the end of the world". The world that they are a part of anyway. The story follows them on their journey, and as they come across a few people that are less. Unfortunately, the story goes no further than that. It's very open ended. All we know is...this is happening....they are traveling. The End.
Plus on top of that, I think the translation I had was horrible. If it wasn't that, the author didn't know how to write! So, I am hoping it is just a poor translation.

"Our Journey to The End of the Ceasing World" is less concerned about the mysterious circumstances that have turned the world of its main couple into a quietly nightmarish post-apocalypse where people and any record of them are prone to suddenly evaporating into thin air. Rather, it reads more like a fable about a boy and a girl who've found a way to enjoy what may be their last days, and how their travels and conviction affect both the people around them and, with time, themselves.
A few peripheral elements (somewhat heavy-handed gender essentialism, mostly) kind of rub me the wrong way, but otherwise it's a cute story with an uplifting message, despite the depressing backdrop.

Tabi ni deyou, horobiyuku sekai no hate made. Arti indonesianya itu kira-kira 'melakukan perjalanan sampai ke akhir dunia'. Main point dr cerita ini adalah bagaimana kita meninggalkan sesuatu sebelum kita mati.
Novel ini berkisah ttg dua remaja tanpa nama The Boy dan The Girl yang menggunakan Honda Super Cub melakukan perjalanannya di akhir dunia. Akhir dunia yang dimaksud di sini adalah para manusianya mulai menghilang satu persatu disebabkan oleh suatu wabah. Mereka musnah begitu saja. Pertama yang hilang adalah nama dan wajah; nama dan wajah mereka tidak dapat diingat diri sendiri maupun orang lain, dan juga rekaman apapun mulai dari text hingga digital tentang orang yang bersangkutan akan menghilang begitu saja. Kemudian disusul oleh hilangnya warna mereka; orang yang terkena tahap ini warna tubuhnya berubah menjadi hitam putih seperti warna bicolor pada foto. Lalu tahap terakhir yang menghilang adalah bayangan; meskipun kena cahaya appun, bayangan org yg kena tahap ini bayangannya tak akan muncul. Tahap final adalah menghilangnya keberadaan orang itu sendiri.
Nah di novel ini si boy dan girl melakukan perjalanan. Buku ini berkisah tentang perjalanan mereka, bukan tentang wabah tersebut. Perjalanan pasangan ini dibagi menjadi tiga episode. Di tiap episode, mereka bertemu orang2 yang udah mencapai tahap tertentu dari si wabah. Bahkan di episode kedua, saat boy dan girl mencoba mewujudkan mimpi seorang perakit pesawat dan akhirnya berhasil, sang pilot yang ,ereka juluki 'Boss' lenyap begitu saja dari dalam pesawat saat ia sedang terbang, dan akhirnya pesawat itu jatuh begitu saja.
Meskipun setting dunianya menyedihkan dan tragedi, tapi ini bukan cerita sedih, apalagi drama. Boy dan girl sudah terbiasa melihat orang2 di sekeliling mereka vanished begitu saja, dimulai dari keluarga mereka sendiri. Ga heran kalau begitu mengetahui si Boss menghilang dari pesawatnya, mereka hanya bisa membawa bangkai pesawat itu pulang ke gudangnya dan melanjutkan perjalanan. Cerita ini cukup ringan untuk dinikmati, bukan sesuatu yang memerlukan pembaca untuk berpikir keras. Yang kurang dari novel ini hanyalah ending yang kurang pas. Kukira akan diakhiri dengan menghilang Boy dan Girl itu sendiri, tapi nyatanya mereka hanya melanjutkan perjalanan mereka yang diduga akan keluar dari wilayah Jepang. Tapi ya sekali lagi, buku ini berkisah perjalanan seperti sebuah diary, dan bukannya kisah drama sedih, jadi ya wajar kalau endingnya ya seperti itu. Kukira bakal ada volume berikutnya tapi kurasa light novel ini hanya selesai satu buku, meskipun kukira ga menutup kemungkinan juga kalau Yorozuya meneruskan perjalanan Boy dan Girl.

Best light novel.

Thốt lên kinh ngạc với những chi tiết cả cảnh thiên nhiên cực kì tinh tế, những khoảnh khắc trải nghiệm cực kì thú vị, xúc động, ám ảnh... nó khiến mình muốn nhảy vào chiếc Sirus và lao trên đường để tìm kiếm những hình ảnh thiên nhiên giống như trong truyện.. Tiếp đó những câu hỏi về sự tồn tại và biến mất ám ảnh các nhân vật trong truyện, đặc biệt là 2 cô cậu bé, nhưng dù vậy, họ vẫn cố gắng vượt qua nó, không xóa bỏ hoàn toàn, chỉ là cứ để cảm xúc đó ở bên cạnh và tiếp tục đi đến phía trước, dù có biến mất thì phải tận hưởng mọi khoảng thời gian tồn tại -> 1 bài học đáng giá!
Cảm xúc cuối cùng cùa mình là cảm giác ức chế vì không có seri truyện này, thật quá háo hức về những cuộc hành trình tiếp theo của 2 người bạn!!!!!!

Mình nghĩ mình cực kì hợp với lightnovel, với nhịp độ chậm rãi của câu chữ, với sự chuyển cảnh đơn giản và với những dòng cảm xúc dịu dàng mà lightnovel đem lại, đôi lúc có thể là mỉm cười vui tươi. Và "Hành trình đến tận cùng thế giới" đã đáp ứng đủ nhu cầu của mình, thậm chí còn vượt hơn thế rất nhiều. Mình thích em nó tới nỗi, lúc vừa đọc xong mình đã lục lọi tin tức của em nó trên "khắp mọi miền thế giới" để xem thử có phiên bản nào khác không, hay là phần 2 có lập lò ra trận không. Giờ, lâu rồi nghĩ lại, thật ngu ngốc, bởi vì cái kết như thế là trọn vẹn nhất rồi, có viết nữa cũng chẳng còn gì để nói đâu, ngoài những cuộc gặp, những cuộc hành trình. Và để rồi ai đó sẽ biến mất, cô bé hay cậu bé? Ok, quay lại nội dung chính nào! Mình thích em nó, rất rất nhiều, không chỉ qua nội dung là lạ của nó đâu, mà còn ở cách diễn đạt này, cách miêu tả này, cả những hình minh họa có sẵn trong sách nữa. Mình yêu em nó nhiều thật sự, vì ngay lúc mình viết bài review này, mình vẫn còn cảm giác man mác khi cậu bé đèo cô bé trên con đường dài, còn cả cảm giác bức bối khi cả hai phải đội cả trời nắng trên đầu, lê từng bước nặng nhọc. Và giờ nghĩ lại, mình cũng nghẹn đắng cả cổ họng bởi cảm giác đớn đau đến ám ảnh khi nghĩ đến điều đã xảy ra với sếp, băn khoăn nho nhỏ về hành trình tương lai của công chúa... Cả cặp đôi ở vườn cà chua nữa (chắc thế).
Mình muốn nó chuyển thể thành phim, manga cũng được, nhưng đừng có phần 2... vì đến cuối cùng, kết cục của bọn họ đã được định đoạt rồi, liệu đến đó, bạn có thể vững vàng chấp nh���n không? Bạn có thôi day dứt trong lòng về những người mình quý đột ngột biến mất không? Thôi thì hãy cứ để cuộc hành trình này mãi không có hồi kết, mãi luôn giữ được niềm vui trọn vẹn...

If you ever reminiscence or reflect upon the past, then this book is for you. Although the level of language was not very high, I enjoyed this book, and I love this book for the idea of an "illness" that erases the existence of all that contract it. I wished that the author expanded this book into a series, but really it is definitely worth your time.

Có thể do không phải là fan của dòng Light Novel, đọc cuốn Hành trình đến tận cùng thế giới này hơi bị "sốc" vì không quá quen được.
Như tác giả đã chia sẻ, đây là một cuốn sách viết vội vàng, Hành trình đến tận cùng thế giới giống như một câu chuyện mà chính cốt truyện tự vận động. Không sắp đặt, không drama, không dông dài, mọi thứ đều tự nhiên như nước chảy thành sông.
Cùng du ngoạn trên chiếc Super Cub đã cũ, cô bé và cậu bé dần bước những bước đầu trên cuộc hành trình khám phá thế giới. Câu chuyện dễ thương lắm. Thực ra quyển sách không dày, nếu đọc nhanh thì 1 ngày là hết. Nhưng tôi cứ muốn nhâm nhi câu chuyện này, thành thử kéo dài đến hơn tuần. Theo chân hành trình của 2 cô cậu này từ lúc bắt đầu, tôi đọc rất nhanh vì rất vui. Thế nhưng khi chỉ còn vài chục trang nữa là hết thì tôi dường như vô tình mà cố ý đọc chậm lại, hoặc giả không muốn đọc tiếp vì tôi sợ cái kết truyện sẽ là kết thúc của hành trình này, mà tôi thì không muốn hành trình này chấm dứt chút nào. Nhưng mà tôi lại tò mò, thế nên lại đọc tiếp một cách chậm rãi chứ không còn ăn tươi nuốt sống như những chương trước. May quá câu chuyện có kết thúc mở. Để mà biết có lẽ khi đóng sách lại thì 2 cô cậu kia vẫn cứ vi vu nơi nào đó, nhạt màu dần nhưng chưa biến mất, có khi lại dạt cả sang trung quốc rồi không chừng. Giải trí nhẹ nhàng thì chỉ cần một câu chuyện thế này thôi.

Là 1 cuốn light novel nên không thể mong nó hồi hộp và kịch tính được. Ngược lại, nó nhẹ nhàng nhưng cuốn hút theo 1 cách rất riêng. Truyện không có tên bất kỳ một nhân vật hay địa danh nào, đơn giản vì các yếu tố ấy đã dần bị tiêu biến, và cách để lách chúng chính là không sử dụng một danh từ riêng nào.
Hành trình của cô bé và cậu bé là hành trình đến tận cùng thế giới. Tận cùng thế giới là ở đâu thì cả 2 cũng không biết được, “nhưng mà chỉ cần ở bên cậu, thì tớ đi đâu cũng được.”

Cái kết hay.
Gu sách/phim trước giờ của mình vẫn là: HE cũng được, BE cũng được nhưng nhất định không thể OE vì mình ghét cái cảm giác mơ hồ không rõ ràng. Với cuốn sách này, khi đọc mình đã vội đoán (và chuẩn bị sẵn tinh thần) rằng tác giả sẽ cho một cái kế BE đầy lâm li khi cô bé và cậu bé đều tiêu biến. Vậy mà tác giả không làm thế.
Cái cảm giác nhẹ nhõm khi cuộc ngao du vẫn tiếp tục đến trang cuối cùng là một cảm giác khá đáng nhớ với mình giữa những cuốn sách đọc trong hè này.

It's okay story wise, but one thing I actively disliked about this novel is that it uses physical violence against Boy (one of the main characters) for cheap laughs. Sorry, it's just not funny or interesting when a character is repeatedly assaulted for saying something another character doesn't like. It was already lame the first time, there's no reason to repeat it a billion times throughout the novel. Needless to say, it also made me dislike Girl. What a psycho!

Quit on page 83. Brilliant sounding setting isn't explored and nobody seems to care that they're going to disappear. Main characters uninteresting -- 少女 is argumentative and keeps kicking generically optimistic 少年. It started with 14 pages of them deciding whether to push their broken bike.
