This book is about humanity and the realization that instead of a right to life, rather we receive the gift of life. Every gift involves a giver and a recipient. Who or what is the giver? As recipient, I can either accept or reject the gift. What does that mean? Am I a blip in the evolutionary process, or am I a creature burdened or blessed with a purpose in life? And what does that mean?
Usually, when the distractions of daily life deplete our energy, the first thing we eliminate is the thing we need the most: quiet, reflective time. Time to dream, time to contemplate what's working and what's not, so that we can make changes for the better. That's what John Foley's book allowed me to do. Never mind that the last time I sat in front of John Foley was in 1976. Never mind that he was then trying to explain to 17 year olds what life is all about. This book proves that he kept at it. Reading it now, after having gone through the ups and downs of my life, brought things into perspective for me. Reading it allowed me to just reflect and remember the things and people that have made and continue to make a huge impact in my life at any given moment. Should we reflect on life? I leave you with this: Someday this life will be gone. This is one terrific book.
