Rate this book
After a traumatic experience with her graduate school professor, Anne Fleming disposes of all her possessions, boards a plane, and plans to check out of life. But a chance meeting on an international flight leads her to Wildfell, a gothic mansion north of London. At first glance, Wildfell seems like the perfect place to hide out, and Anne is intrigued by its strange atmosphere and history of disappearances and deaths. But echoing voices, ghostly mists, a mute girl with a sketchbook full of murders, and a possessive landlady force her to confront her deepest fears.

Anne's budding romance with gorgeous Irish actor Bain Tierney holds her to the house. But when Wildfell tenants begin disappearing and dying, Anne must decide if she trusts Bain. Is anyone in the house who they claim to be? Or are there are other forces at work inside Wildfell? And will they ever let her leave?

This supernatural/horror/mystery set in London was not really my cup of tea. I’m not a big fan of the genre at the best of times, but felt like something a bit different, and receiving books from NetGalley is a good way to stretch my reading repertoire - but has the disadvantage that I feel compelled to finish them even when I’m not enjoying them. My biggest problem with this was how feeble, self-indulgent, silly and self-pitying the heroine was.

Anne, a graduate student living in Virginia, decides she needs to run away as she can’t face testifying at the court case against her college professor, with whom she had an affair. She dumps all her possessions and gets on a flight to London, where she is sat between two men, an amiable businessman, Chris, and a handsome rake, Bain. Finding out she has nowhere to stay, Bain offers to take her back to the suspiciously cheap house where he rents a room, and because she’s an idiot seduced by a pretty face, she readily agrees. She discovers the house is run by the irritable Mrs Gates, and that an alarming number of tenants have disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Instead of checking into a backpackers hostel like anyone sensible would, she decides to stay, whine about not having enough money, spend most of her time mooning about, feeling jealous of other women talking to Bain, and drinking too much. Even seeing scary black clouds forming humanoid shapes at the dinner table is not enough to make her move out, despite offers of an alternative place to stay from Chris and his family. No, she stays for the inevitable life-threatening climax (not the kind she hopes to have with Bain, either.)

The writing was fine, the narrative chock-full of classic British literary references, that even I, who has barely read any literature since my O-levels, couldn’t miss. Initially I thought this was going to be a retelling of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, which of course I haven’t read (but found a plot summary on Wikipedia so know that it’s not). I think if you like “gothic horror” (whatever that means) and are less impatient with immature idiotic protagonists, you would enjoy this, it just wasn’t for me.

"Life's a scary thing, you know... It's not just living at Wildfell that's dangerous."
I was looking for a fun read as a palate cleanse before diving into another fantasy world, and Wildfell fit the bill. I picked this book up because I was in the mood for a cozy mystery kind of book, and gothic, supernatural stories are right up my alley... I definitely can relate with Anne in wanting to escape my life and hide. What I found was an interesting and spooky tale but characters I didn't really connect with.

Wildfell is told from the point of view of Anne Fleming, an American graduate student that impulsively gets on a plane to London to escape her less-than-stellar reality. Through random happenstance, she makes a couple of friends on the plane, both of them showing her a kindness. Bain brings her round to the house he lives in, Wildfell, and she occupies an open room. But things get weird when residents begin disappearing and spooky things are seen. Just what is going on there? There is a lot going on in these 300 pages, and I have distinctly different feelings on two of the main elements so this review will be broken down into two parts.

The Wildfell plotline itself was what gripped my interested and kept me reading; spooky, old building with a lot of history and local legend, and a cast of mysterious characters to go along with it. I found the pacing good, the spookiness getting more and more intense as things happen. I would have liked to see more research on the part of Anne into the house and its history rather than relying on others. Things on this front are wrapped up mostly well by the end of the book.

Where the book wasn't as strong for me was with Anne. There is so much mentioned about her past, seemingly for character development but read mostly like traits that didn't connect to a character. I don't want to get into spoiler territory, but suffice it to say I wish there was more character development beyond being haunted by the past. The biggest detractor for my enjoyment was my inability to suspend my disbelief with Anne coming to London. I get wanting to escape your life and wanting to disappear, and I get the selfishness of not telling anyone so as to not be talked out of it. Where I struggled is the little things: throwing away nearly all her belongings but leaving her only coat in the closet (when she is going to London in January), bringing an unrealistic amount of money to live off of, and seemingly having no trouble with immigration when she has no return flight home and obviously no intention of returning. Perhaps I am just not the kind of person that can relate to this kind of impulsivity, but for me her lack of planning on lodging, food, and necessities detracted from the narrative for me.
"A bolt of anxiety coursed through me. In a few hours, I'd be in London, with no idea where I would stay or what I would do there
Overall I enjoyed the story despite my nitpicking, but I never really developed any feelings for the characters. I think that is in large part to there being so much going on with Anne's backstory and my being mildly annoyed by her inner monologues. I actually found myself most invested in Bain, who isn't the main character or narrator.
"Don't look back there. The past can't be changed. What's important is what you do now."
Both Bain and Anne struggle with pasts that haunt them, running to try to escape them and move on. I found it interesting that they found one another - and that the others at Wildfell also seemed to be cut from the same cloth - but that wasn't a thread that was really explored in the book.

cw: abandonment, missing father figure, estranged families, abusive power dynamics, date rape.

Thank you to the publisher, BooksGoSocial, for providing me the electronic arc in exchange for my honest review. Wildfell will be available on April 27, 2018. The pre-order price on Amazon for the Kindle version is $0.99.

An absorbing story for anyone who loves creepy thrillers. I really enjoyed following this young protagonist as she jumped from the proverbial frying pan of her old life into the fire of her new one. Finding lodging at Wildfell in the unfamiliar setting seemed like a stroke of good fortune. It wasn't. From the very beginning there's a dark atmosphere of mystery and intrigue. There are strangely sinister characters, and the supernatural disturbances grow increasingly more ominous with each passing day. The writing is so vivid you can almost feel the dankness and the evil permeating through the halls of this Gothic mansion. No one is safe from its clutches. A truly spooky read that I recommend highly.

I love paranormal, and supernatural stories, and the cover of this one alone promised that. I wasn't at all disappointed. Wildfell is creepy and dark, with just the right amount of suspense and plenty of chills. It's a ghost story that the "Ghost Story Junkie" would highly recommend. Visitors will want to visit every room in the old manor and explore everything from the grand and decaying expansive manor, have a talk with the mysterious elder mistress...watch the shadows and listen for the midnight footsteps traveling up to the turret room. Along with the creepy child and paranormal activity that leaves the characters questioning reality and their own sanity, you have now explored. Wildfell. Even though its set-in modern times, as soon as I entered the doors of Wildfell, I felt as though I had traveled back to the 19th century and what a fabulous journey I had creeping along the darkened halls, holding my breath as the shadows emerged and cheering on while biting my lip as the characters faced their fears and battle the most unmentionable. The reader will wonder at times as to what and who is real and with some unexpected twists, you will find yourself wanting to return to Wildfell for much more.... if you survive.

This was such a good gothic mystery with a little romance. It has all of the elements you wish for in a book like this. Foggy London setting, a single girl running from demons in her past. A gorgeous but flawed man who wants to help her; creepy old mansion with suspicious characters...Macabre, atmospheric. Dead bodies turn up. I could feel the horror of the main character.

I have never read this author before. She joined our Facebook book club to host the read we did of The Haunting of Hill House, in October. I made a note to look up her novels bc I was sure I would enjoy her writing. I downloaded this one from KU and was even more pleased than I expected to be. I highly recommend it! I am excited to begin the first book in her trilogy today called The Meadows.

If you have KU go download this one now! It was a feel good to me...perfect pace. A favorite kind of setting for me, some unreliable narrators.

Panicking over the thought of having to testify against her ex-boyfriend/ex-professor in court, Anne makes a spur of the moment decision to trash all of her belongings and start somewhere anew. On the plane to London she makes a couple of friends and one of them tells her she might be able to stay at the boarding house he's staying at. Initially enchanted with the property, Anne soon finds herself becoming more suspicious about the mysterious house and its owner, Mrs. Gates, and it doesn't take long before the creepy and paranormal events begin.

Wildfell follows a pretty standard gothic story template, and the mystery and paranormal parts of the story are interesting and entertaining. However, I could've done without the romantic aspect, especially because Anne appeared to be much more into Bain (the man she met on the plane) than he was into her. She endlessly pondered over Bain's whereabouts, which women in the house he'd slept with/was in love with, and the possibility he was attracted to her, all of which took away from her strong, independent woman facade. But, I'll admit her obsession with Bain was honest to her character's traits. In addition to her questionable decision-making skills, such as trashing all of her belongings (including her cell when she could've just removed the SIM card) and flying to London mid-January without a jacket, she was almost desperate for love - I just don't think she realized it. Her immediate infatuation showed her co-dependency for male affection, so it helped convince me she actually didn't want to testify against her ex because of her feelings for him, rather than fear. She was naive and spontaneous, and it didn't work in her favor.

It's a decent paranormal mystery, but the heroine's immaturity and the overly descriptive scenery (a pet peeve of mine) guaranteed I won't re-read it.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’m kind of baffled at the high reviews of this extremely mediocre book.

The protagonist is a grad student, allegedly, but reads like a fifteen-yr-old, just very awkward in an adolescent way. She is falling in lust with one of the first guys she meets while fleeing her role as a victim in a sexual assault trial. Yep. And if I tell you anything else that happens, you will just laugh. Gothic atmosphere, but utterly dumb story and flimsy characters.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing free digital access to this title in exchange for my honest opinion.

Anne Flemming wants to get as far away from her hometown as possible. After a catastrophic experience with her ex boyfriend, she decides not to testify against him in court. Instead, she boards on a plane without telling anyone, and finds herself in London under a false name. Desperately trying to get away from her own memories, Anne will feel well in the beginning. Having rent a room in a gothic mansion in northern London, she seems very fond of Bain, her striking Irish roommate.

However, the Wildfell mansion is not what it seems to be. As black mists in the form of human beings will start to appear, the landlady will get more and more secretive and peculiar. Anne finds out that people have vanished from the house before, but where have they gone? Why were they never found? Among disturbing drawings from the landlady's young daughter , bodiless voices and mirages, Anne and Bain will have to figure out what is happening, or get out of the evil building before it's too late.

Wildfell is a tremendously enjoyable horror story. Based more on what you don't see rather than what is there, it is constructed in the way a good ghost story or haunted house book should be : no excessive scenes. The reader's imagination runs wild with "what ifs", and there are several very good, blood curling scenes. There are several intelligent heroes, thankfully, who investigate into situations instead of blindly accepting them, which is a certain plus. Moreover, the romantic element to the story was laid out perfectly, spicing it up just enough to add one more component.

All in all, Wildfell was a very good horror book to read, certainly interesting enough to make a reader finish it in one go! Definitely recommended for the fans of mystery and horror.

Anne leaves the States for London in a hurry, escaping her court date where she's due to testify against her Professor, who has been accused of inappropriate behavior with his female students.
On her flight she meets Bain, a wildly handsome Irish actor who suggests she takes a room at Wildfell, where he's currently staying. Russell's owner and landlady proved to be a strange and slightly ominous character. She and the creepy mansion add to Anne's already problematic claustrophobia and she ends up spending her days seeing the sights in London, dreading the thought of spending time in her room. At the same time she's developed a huge crush on womanizing Bain, adding to her difficulties. When she hears the bad reputation Wildfell has, with it's history of mysterious disappearances of it's tenants and starts seeing ghosts or demons, her life descends into a nightmare.
On the whole this was a pleasant read, but this beggared belief: why on earth would she stay there? I would have been out of there like a bat out of hell! Plus, her infatuation with Bain...After the experience with her Professor wouldn't she know better?
I kept reading till the end because I wanted to see how everything was resolved, it was a quick read with a basically good story, but it left me slightly dissatisfied.

I really enjoyed reading this modern Gothic novel by London Clarke and look forward to seeing more spooky stories from her in the near future--I hope! I haven't read a novel like this in decades, so it was much fun. The author did an excellent job delightfully tricking me into thinking who the good and bad guys were. Well done.

If you love gothic mysteries, this book is for you!

I absolutely LOVED this book! Started out a little slow, but once it gets going, you won't want to stop reading. Seriously, just set aside a few hours because you won't put it down.

Creepy atmosphere, strange characters, and some paranormal activity make this book a winner!

Running away from home Anne Fleming decides to try a forge a new life at a pay-per-month guest house in London. However as previous guests seem to have disappeared without a trace and an odd landlady starts displaying her quirks, Anne soon realises staying at Wildfell may have been a mistake…

I picked up Wildfell expecting it to be a chilling ghost story but I have to admit that it isn’t. The book certainly didn’t spook me in any way and the plot is less about the haunted house and more about the characters. I think I’d be slightly more on board with this if I actually liked any of the characters or if I hadn’t been expecting a ghost story.

I found Anne’s character incredibly shallow and annoying – the backstory she is given of a professor grooming and taking advantage of her is interesting but rather than making her a strong character with a distrust of love and relationships she just seems very self centred. Every man she meets or locks eyes on is obviously madly attracted to her or she is attracted to them – this is the same way every single man is portrayed in the book and it becomes very unrealistic and tiring. The main relationship in the story I was expecting to tie into the haunted house element in some kind of way but it actually just seems like all of the supernatural elements are just a side-line to the main plot which is a destructive, unrealistic romance that ultimately goes nowhere.

The story also seems to drag a lot in places, details that you think must have been mentioned because they’ll be important later on turn out to be nothing. The ending also drags along– the main supernatural element ties up and then you have chapters and chapters of what essentially feels like an extended epilogue. There were also some very unrealistic and odd choices made – immigration wouldn’t have been happy with a tourist with no return ticket who didn’t know how long they'd be in the country or where they would be staying and a minor character conveniently turns out to be a ghost hunter but then this aspect of his character is hardly used.

Overall Windfell is not a chilling horror, it’s a story about a destructive romance with some supernatural elements thrown in. The characters are flimsy and unrealistic and the story ultimately drags. Thank you to NetGalley & BooksGoSocial for the chance to read the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The blurb and cover drew me in - and the fact that I needed a break from romance novels, so why not try a Gothic horror?

I liked the beginning, getting glimpses, here and there, of some past event that had set the story in motion - the heroine, Anne, fleeing the US to London. A chance encounter on the plane leads her to Wildfell, a house with history and a pretty scary past.

Since I love London, I loved the story taking place there. The heroine would visit this and that; she'd go there and there. All those references somewhat kept the action in the present, while the house was keeping it in the past. I mean Gothic horror was first written in the 18th century, and Wildfell was said to be built back then. Sinister and terrible things have happened, throughout the centuries there and they were still happening.

It would have been a really, really good book but something was missing. I was intrigued by what was happening - people kept disappearing and such - but then the author would throw in a bit of romance between Anne and another character - is he the hero of the story? - and I'd get confused. To be honest, I'd rather the author hadn't written the romance into it because it kind of had a dead end; I didn't see the purpose of it. As for the missing factor? Well, it didn't spook me, like I expected.

But people and tastes; what didn't work for me, might work for others. It was okay though.

I voluntarily agreed to read an early copy through Netgalley and my rating is 3 stars.

Thank you to Netgalley and London Clarke for the opportunity to read this gem prior to release day.
Although I would have hoped to finish this in one setting my calendar had other ideas, but every chance I got to read a few lines, this was the book I reached for.
Anne Fleming makes a rash decision to leave the states and head to London in hopes to distance herself from her recent indiscretions and her mother. Not knowing what the horror that was ahead of her, she allowed herself to open up to her fellow roommates and the creepy, old mansion called Wildfell.
With a dark past and old tales surrounding the house, the residents put their better judgment aside and try to move on from whatever it is in their lives they're running from. Anne's growing curiosity and gut feelings telling her something is off, she finds herself longing for the talk, dark and handsome man named, Bain.
With growing feelings that can't be acted upon, she questions Bain's motives and tries to unravel the tales of the house.
I gave this fives stars because not only did it unfold in the most perfect way, London carefully sculpted each character from the Landlord's mute daughter Alice to the maid and walked you through the house's interior layout as if you were there experiencing it too!

I was expecting a ghost story but what I got was a lukewarm attempt at gothic horror. I admit to loving haunted house stories but this fell flat.

The main character was shallow and the romance element of the book was a distraction we could have done without.

All in all I found the story dragged and really find it hard to say anything positive.

A great old fashioned ghost story. The cover of this novel got me interested and the synopsis got me hooked. The novel is about Anne who is running away from testifying in court against her Professor. The story doesn't break till much later into the novel which I thought would have been better revealed in the very beginning. Anyways, Anne heads off to London to get away. On the plane she meets up with two gentlemen in which one is staying at Wildfell. Wildfell's rate is cheap but the mansion is creepy. The lady of the house and her daughter are super weird and creepy along with the guests staying there. While Anne is there guests go missing and supernatural things start happening. The novel was creepy enough to keep me reading till the end. I rated this novel 3 stars as I felt the story line dragged in some places and some parts just didn't flow.

My copy was from NetGalley.

On the cover we can see the Wildfell mansion where Anne will meet.

Everything starts after a short relationship with her teacher, Anne leaves the city, she will make a strange meeting on the plane. She will meet at Wildfell in this Gothic mansion in North London. She will think immediately that it is an ideal place to hide except that it raises questions about this place and its course of deaths and disappearances.

A fiction filled with suspense and twists with endearing characters. The story is captivating, I love the pen of this author.

I picked this up because I'm a sucker for haunted house horror novels and got taken on the Gothic ghost story ride I was expecting. I did enjoy reading this on a gloomy afternoon, but it was over quickly.
Overall this was a pretty fun read, with few issues I had that took a star off the rating. The narrator, Anne Fleming, was both likable and unlikable by turns. Her seemingly insatiable need to please Bain, her love interest, was frustrating when she constantly bowed to his whims and plans, apparently without any thought for what she wanted to do. For a while the plot seemed entirely Bain-driven, when I would have liked to see Anne exploring more of Wildfell and its history without the love interest involved. There were plenty of moments that could have been much spookier if they hadn't been derailed by Bain's arrival and Anne's subsequent mooning.
I was also strangely taken with Savannah and her life story. I wouldn't mind seeing that character again on her own, maybe in another haunted house that she can solve the mystery of.

Delightfully creepy, this story follows a lost and confused Anne trying to make a new life for herself as Tessa at Wildfell. What starts out as a short stay in an odd home becomes something out of a nightmare...

It started strong and finished well. That bit about the long-lost father returning, though? It nearly killed the ending for me. The epilogue coming back to the house saved it.

Wow! Wildfell returned me to my love of gothic mysteries. I devoured this story in 1 day, reading during work breaks, while cooking, in bed and at dawn...I just could not put it down. The adventure of running away to another country, coupled with the paranormal activities in the ancient house and the mystery of the missing tenants had me enthralled from the first page. I have found a new favourite author to follow. Thanks to NetGalley for making this amazing book available to me.

Holy moly! This was an amazing read! I read this in less than 24 hours. I just couldn't put it down. Anne drops her life in the states and runs off to London to escape having to testify in court against an ex-lover accused of sexual assault, who also happened to be her college professor. On the plane to London Anne meets Bain. Under the assumed name of Tessa, Anne decides to stay with Bain at the old and decrepit house in which he's staying. The problem is... this house has more than just creaky walls and dusty floors lurking in it's shadows. Will Anne ever make it out of there alive once she's entered? Or will the house decide her fate?

Excellently written. The story is well thought out and very well put together. A little slow at the start but by about 40% of the way through it picks up a sledge hammer and nails you! This book had me gripped til the end. Characters were perfectly developed and more than believable, they seemed to jump off the page (or screen in my case).

I dare say, this has to be one of the best horror novels I've ever read and coming from a horror fanatic like myself, that's a pretty BIG compliment! I am going to have to get a hold of a paper copy of this one for my library and I would definitely recommend this book to all who enjoy a bit of creepiness in their lives.

I just want to make two things clear: a) I went into this book in good faith, and b) I was really expecting to like this since gothic horror is my shit. I always feel bad saying smack about independently published books, but I am so frustrated about this one and I need to vent.

SO. This a mix of a murder mystery and of gothic horror, with supernatural elements, except said supernatural elements could be removed from the story entirely and it wouldn't make that much of a difference. The whole mystery relies on every single character not having basic survival instincts, not being bothered to deliver concrete information for no reason at all, ignoring the biggest red flags I've ever seen in a story, it's just... ugh. There are also... interesting takes about feminism and feminists, which just... really puzzled me given the premise of the book and how the heroine is a victim of grooming and sexual harrassment from her professor, but the whole thing is just not handled as sensitively as it should. At all.

Also, the romance? Without spoiling, it ain't gonna last in a long distance relationship, lmao.

I read this in one sitting; I was too creeped out to go to bed! This isn't the type of book I normally read, but it was very well written. The romance was a bit much for me, though it did fit with a wounded and love hungry character who is an emotional mess. I connected with the characters who were all wounded in their own ways. I do wish there had been more growth on Anne's part, but perhaps that will come in a second book!

You CAN judge a book by it's cover

I noticed this book because of its cover and title. The plot synopsis sealed my decision to download a sample on my Kindle. I love gothic, spooky stories and felt like I'd found a writer who was a kindred spirit. The story was everything I hoped it would be. I am looking forward to reading more novels by London Clark!

I liked the mystery really nice plot (it did scared once when I was reading at midnight😅). I have to say it wasn't very innovative (since it reminded me of Fallen a bit/my absolute fave thriller) but it was good, a little logic and a bit more of supernatural.
I have to say though I didn't like much the characters... I didn't hate Anne but I didn't love her either and the main LI now that feels cold and off... and i still think I needed some closure in the end with him...🙄🙄 I liked how everything ended for Anne, at least she figured out her life.
I have a very soft spot for romance and I needed sth more here...🙃🙃 But overall I did enjoyed much it kept me on my toes😉😊
