This beautifully styled book for girls is full of everything you will ever want to know about Flower Fairies. Featuring stories, poems, recipes, craft ideas, fairy facts, and tips for how to spot fairies in your own garden, this stunning gift book brings the glorious world of the Flower Fairies to life.
Cicely Mary Barker was the illustrator who created the famous Flower Fairies; those ethereal smiling children with butterfly wings. As a child she was influenced by the works of the illustrator Kate Greenaway, whom she assiduously copied in her formative years. Her principal influence, however, was the artwork of the Pre-Raphaelites.
I'm not sure how I've never heard of Cicely Mary Barker before, but she was an illustrator in the early 1900's who painted extraordinary botanical/fairy art. (More at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicely_M...) This book combines her art (each fairy is depicted with its flower or tree, which is drawn with strict botanical accuracy) with text, poems and projects for kids. Plus, it has a pink cover and gold-edged pages--sure to appeal to girls!
This book is an amazing, intricate detailed artifact of cloth, hand woven and spun, and quilted into something girls of all ages will enjoy. It has magic, love, joy and grief, and all tightly knitted into the garment of stories, recipes, spells and games. The pictures are equally delightful, weaving the seams and hemlines to finish off a book that anyone should like to try on!
My kids and I ADORE this magical book! This beautifully illustrated book has so much content: stories, songs, crafts, recipes and more. We are having a great time with this fun book and is one we will continually go back to and use. There is always a lot to look at with Cicely Mary Barker’s stunning artwork. The only downside to this book is in the title, where it says it’s a book for girls and excludes boys. I feel it’s unnecessary to call it a girls’ book and leave out boys (especially when there are boy fairies in the book!)
However, we are all enchanted with our guide to the fairy world. Inspired by the book, my little kids and I are now planning to do a fairy party together. We want more books like this one!!
This poorly produced waste of money is an insult to the memory of an extremely talented and meticulous artist. I wish I could post an image here to show you the ghastly drawings they have included in all the stories.
Cicely Mary Barker's own work is included, but badly copied and pasted and unartfully assembled.
If you want to buy a book about Flower Fairies, one of Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies of the Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn, Trees, Garden, Wayside or Alphabet (or even Fairyopolis if you want a narrative rather than just the beautiful original images and poetry) is a much better option.
Ordered this for a baby shower gift (we were told to bring a favorite book from childhood). I never heard of this book before but I know the new mom loves fairies and I assume her little girl will too in a couple of years. What shocked me is how absolutely beautiful this book is. Gilded edges on the pages! Full-color illustrations. Games to play, poems, things to make, how to plant a fairy garden. I'm very pleased to give this as a gift!
I love all the different aspects of this book, but some of the art is blurry and many fairies are repeated to excess. Also, in the second story on page, 184, there is a line of text that looks like it should continue on the next page to finish the sentence and it just doesn't. I kind of wish the book was segmented by type of activity/story, but ultimately I enjoyed this book.
We got this book for Claire for her birthday and she LOVES it. We've only read one story from it so far, but it is just such a lovely book!
This is a very cute book. There are recipes and ideas for parties and creating your own flower fairy garden. The pictures are beautiful. Claire has really loved this book. The stories are right on her level. :) They're not overwhelmingly fantastic stories, but they're cute. I think I would have liked more stories. But still a great book for a little girl! :)
This is an absolutely beautiful book based on the artwork of Cicely Mary Barker. There's a couple of stories in the book along with loads of fairy-related activities that the reader can do. The artwork is, of course, quite beautiful (although many of the same drawings are used more than once and may change only in size or the part of the fairy shown.) There are numerous topics such as fairy homes, fairies and the seasons, fairy fashion and fairy food. The book also has a gold edging on the pages which makes it look really, really neat. Definitely a book anyone who loves fairies should get.
I have always adored Barker's Flower Fairies; they are some of the most beautiful drawings I've ever seen. This book combines all kinds of poems, stories, and crafts to entertain any young girl.
This book is a must have for any little girls book collection! hours of entertainment for girls discovering their flower fairy name, planning a tea party, or planting your own fairy garden.
