A collection of previously unpublished travel writing from women who are members of the Amazonians club for women travel writers. Contributors include writers such Julia Blackburn, Robyn Davidson, Jenny Diski, Martha Gellhorn and Katie Hickman.
This collection is 21 years old & I went into it expecting the contemptuous post-colonial writing that characterises so much travel writing. I was pleasantly surprised, however, & most of the essays were truly excellent, with the exception of Sara Wheelers which I thought was a classic example of the former. Let's make no bones about it: the cover is HIDEOUS &, yes, the vast majority of the writing is by middle-class white women YAWN but, as a historical collection, it's definitely worth a read.
