This collection is 21 years old & I went into it expecting the contemptuous post-colonial writing that characterises so much travel writing. I was pleasantly surprised, however, & most of the essays were truly excellent, with the exception of Sara Wheelers which I thought was a classic example of the former. Let's make no bones about it: the cover is HIDEOUS &, yes, the vast majority of the writing is by middle-class white women YAWN but, as a historical collection, it's definitely worth a read.

The stories are written well enough but the subject matter in the most part was pretty gloomy - can't honestly say I enjoyed this selection.
