Raffaella Fletcher grew up on drugs, starting at the age of 12 with marijuana. By the time she was 19 she was a heroin addict, prepared to do anything to get enough money for a fix. By the time she was 24 she was ready to commit suicide. This is the story of those years, from a happy, middle-class home into the gutter. She was lucky. Slowly and painfully she recovered.
First of all, wow—I really enjoyed this book. It was short, powerful, and well written. Raffaella was cautious about drugs from a very young age and came from a good, loving background. However, she also had a curious personality. By the age of 12, she smoked her first joint, which opened the door to experimenting with different drugs. By 16, she was fully dependent on various substances. Her addiction led her to marry and travel with her husband, leaving her loving parents behind. By the age of 19, she returned home with her husband after being caught smuggling drugs into another country. By then, she was deeply addicted to what she considered the new love of her life—heroin. She persuaded her husband to try it, and he too became hooked. This lifestyle eventually led her to sell her body just to get her next fix. Every decision she made revolved around feeding her and her husband’s addiction. In the end, she found herself in a different country, where she chose to change her life, confront her addiction, and fight for recovery
