Excerpt from The Story of Glasgow, From the Earliest Times to the Present Day

Merely a trading centre, not very beautiful to look at, and not at all interesting to explore. The City was spoken of as a place to which men came' to make a living or to make a fortune, and from which they were glad to ?ee whenever they had served their ends. The Glasgow boy was apt to look on his birthplace as not much to boast of, and its story as not worth studying.
