'currently reading' for the past several years, that is, and in a very lax sort of way. her use of language is very personal. frequently i'll read a poem of hers and it goes into my brain like oil into a heated skillet. then i'll realize i'm not sure what the poem was really about. but that's not a criticism. each poem leaves me with a very definite sense of itself. i have yet to really devote myself to her or this book of hers. repeated readings might make things more clear.

As the seed of a mole for
Generations carried across
Time on a woman's belly
Flowers one morning blackly
Exposed to poison and poison
Itself is not
Disease but mutation is one
Understanding the strong
Shaft of your clitoris I kiss
As the exposed tip of your
Heart is another.

I read this collection when it first came out and loved it. I 've returned to it in the last few years to find it has aged remarkably well with me. I still recommend this to folks who like their poets like they live their lives: playful and sensual.

This is a book full of beautifully vivid poetry. I can't believe I haven't read poetry for so long. This has been a great reentry into the lush world of poetry and prose.
