Apprentice mage Chance Fortunato has faced off with a lot of nasty things. Power hungry vampires, abusive alpha werewolves, and deranged cultists. But none of his training under his mentor Dr. Corwin has prepared him for the trial he is about to Junior Prom. While investigating an occult group, Chance discovers something truly an event known as the Rending will fall on the night of prom, and every circle of demon-worshippers in New Essex is looking for one The Half-Caste Chylde. Some want to capture her, others want to kill her, for her blood is the key to controlling Mammon's Horde and collecting on the true purpose of the to break a demonic contract without giving up what was bargained for, or losing one's soul. As if things weren't bad enough, Chance learns that if the Horde is not controlled by the blood of the Half-Caste Chylde, it will break free to fulfill a plan of its own, to slaughter one hundred innocents as a sacrifice to release Mammon, the original ruler of Hell. Caught between two terrible choices, Chance's job is made all the more difficult as the past begins to catch up to his mentor and himself. Old debts come due, forgotten wounds are reopened, and alliances shift in unexpectred directions as Chance fights to save both his classmates and the Half-Caste Chylde, whoever she is. With the truth closer than he realizes, can Chance do the impossible, save the day and survive taking up the mantle of Prom Knight?
I didn't like this one as much as the previous books. While Chance is still an apprentice, there didn't seem to be much instruction given in this book. Instead of being a student and learning about how to be a better Wizard, him and all his friends seemed to be fighting a war. The book starts off with Chance, Lucas, Ren and Dr. C taking down an assault squad going after a group of high school students. How is that their job? Where the hell are the Sentinels? I could see if they happened upon what was going on and helped, but it seemed more like a planned mission.
There were also some hiccups with Shade and Chance here.
As always, a romping, fast paced story of the magic and the power of youth. Plus awesome fight scenes, demons, werewolves, fae, and goth girls. What’s not to love? Honestly, I love Chance’s epic journey of redemption, hope, and epic smart ass comments. Ben Reeder weaves together the real life challenges of youth with the challenges of adults into the fantastical world filled with magic and an imperfect hero. Can’t wait for the next!
Hi Ben, I love to read this series. Chance is a good protagonist, but can you make him less bitchy. He is continuously whining and bitching about his past. Its over, can he move on.
I read about your reason why there was a break between your books. I hope from now on you are good and everything is good happening to you.
I don't want to re-read all books so that I can remember all characters. I had a hard time remembering about Ren. So please publish next book as soon as possible.
Lastly, can you tell us how many book will be there in this series?
This series was better than I expected it to be. First, I'm not usually fond of spending time in a teen's head, so a "well written" teen character is not enjoyable for me. I usually don't mind if I can forget the person's age which tends to mean they don't read like a teen. This series jumps over all those problems with the MC's backstory. So he doesn't read like a teen and that's believable, but he's still in real world teen situations and still often has the internal reactions of a teen even if his history gives him an unusual amount of chill in a crisis behaviorally. It's a bit like getting the best of both worlds.
This is a good series that I was sorry to see the end of and hope the author decides to return to it.
I love the continued development of these characters. I was a bit confused about some things about Lucas and Monica. There were references to things that were not mentioned in Charm School. Was there another side story that focused on Lucas? The author mentioned “In Abstentia” which seemed to refer to a novella perhaps? I’ll look it up.
I loved this book. I truly hate that I get the feels when reading this while I also love that fact. No spoilers but the nightmare scene between brother and sister, just damn, man.
This series is as a whole Under-appreciated it is a look at magic and fantasy from a different angle then the done to death Judeo Christian perspective. It also works sarcastic humor in superbly. Looking forward to many more trips to this world.
I was really excited when I saw this book I have been waiting for it . The story is well written and grabs you as soon as you pick it up . The author keeps the story moving . It draws the reader into the story and keeps you enthralled till the end.
This series has proven time and again to be something interesting, filled with much action, some drama, and fun plot twists. This latest book is no exception, and shows the progress Chance has made in the series thus far. Definitely recommended.
A really great installment in a truly exceptional series
I have been a fan of Ben's for a while he writes a good story with a host of characters that it is easy to root for and make you look forward to the next page and hate the last one till the next in the srries
I absolutely love this series! It’s got action humor and every type of paranormal that is out there! These are a must read if you like great characters, splendid background, and incidents in abundance!
Not sure what it was about this one, but I had a hard time focusing on it. It kind of feels like the plot is all over the place, trying to setup and resolve a bunch of different things in a short time.
make sure you read the previous books thoroughly, because a lot of details are brought up in thus one. Pretty solid novel, hope the next one comes soon.
I can't recommend it enough, the world building is great, the characters are well developed and the story is easy to follow. If you liked the previous book you will love this one.
