HOUND DOG

Thanks to the miraculous Guru Guru Bone, Ponta the Labrador retriever can turn into a human girl–and she has found true love with Mirai Ikawa, who knows her secret but loves her just the same. But lately, the Guru Guru Bone hasn’t been working very well, and dating has become ruff-ruff.

Gang, an aggressive Labrador, is drooling over Ponta, unaware that she’s human half the time. And Gang’s owner, Aoka, is attracted to Mirai, and will stop at nothing to have him for herself. When Aoka hatches a plan to “marry” Gang and Ponta, she sets in motion a chain of events that may leave Ponta expecting puppies and Mirai all alone!

I didn't find the rape stuff funny. If it's supposed to be funny because it's not really rape because Ponta is a dog, then her relationship with Mirai is bestiality. Kind of a lose-lose.

As much as I loved this manga series as a kid, even with Ponta being a dog, I don't really like how... aggressive both Gang and Aoka are. Still has some really funny moments and cute art, but there are parts that are definitely something of it's time.

Well, let me start off by saying that this book is rated for ages 16 and up after the first six volumes were rated 13 and up. Finally, and it is a good thing as Pon is found running naked through the streets of Tokyo with a censored button over her private parts. This rating should have happened in Guru Guru Pon-Chan: Volume 5, but at least it finally happened now.

Aoka is a nice addition to the cast. With her interference, she is helping Mirai make up his mind about how he feels about Pon. He finally comes to the realization that he is the man for Pon and nothing is going to stand in his way of them being a couple.

As for the whole pregnancy thing, it was entertaining and there is a surprise ending that no one will see coming. The artwork and story form Satomi Ikezawa is good, but I guess I want Pon to act a little more the age of Mirai. He reminds me of a 17-year old man while Pon seems like a 12-year old girl. And besides, what can they really have in common? After all, she is really just a dog, isn't she? So, with Pon being pregnant, I wonder what will happen in Guru Guru Pon-Chan: Volume 8? Something interesting, I bet.

I rated this book a 7½ out of 10.

Wow! This manga just keeps getting weirder - and the weirder the better! If Hana was a grade-A bitch, then Aoka is a grade-A psycho. Combine that with Ponta, a dog girl, and it seems that Mirai is a magnet for outlandish women! All the better for me though, because it makes the story interesting! So much happened in this book - first Ponta going into heat, then Aoka's delusions of granduer and dog-napping scheme, then Ponta's 'pregnancy' (that was still so very very wrong! I laughed myself to tears). I think it would be a neat plot twist if jii-chan built another guru guru bone for Gang, and he and Aoka could run off together - anything to be rid of the crazy wanna-be bride. The deeper into the story I get, the more I wonder how it's all going to end - I guess I'll just have to read and find out the answer to the question from the first book: is a love between a dog and a human possible?
