Sometimes … life hurts. What do we do then? How do we keep going? Who can help us?
The One who created you knows you by name. He draws near to the broken-hearted. He will gather you in His arms. He will hold you close. He will be with you always.
You will find— • Comfort for your sadness. • Peace for your fears. • Hope for tomorrow. • Light for the journey. • And joy through every season.
Dancing in the Rain is a collection of poems, stories and life-giving words designed to bring you comfort and hope during life’s stormy seasons.
Anusha delights in many things – life, the love of Jesus, people, the beauty of God’s Creation. She writes mostly for pleasure. She has decided never to grow old in spite of a body that is already defying her intentions! She enjoys the finer things of life including friendship and chocolate! Singing, walking, connecting with people and sharing God’s love are her some of her deepest passions. Like her writing, she is a work in progress!
Anusha lives in Adelaide with her husband Shan and their son, Asela.
Four and three quarter stars ( I very rarely give 5). This delightful book is a blessing to dip into or to read through. It is a collection of Anusha's 'Words of comfort and hope for a sad heart' and contains a variety of anecdotes, short stories, poems, Anusha's own true stories, friends' stories and other gems, all aimed at bringing hope, cheer, God's perspective and healing balm to the reader. A serial story in ten parts runs through the book, and had my interest enough to 'cheat' by reading it through instead of reading it interspersed among the other pieces.
Beautifully written, this book will bless many people. the inclusion of scriptures will be a help to many and it's always good to be reminded of the appropriate words of God for our situation.
Now that I've read the whole book, I'll dip into it and be refreshed.
What a timely blessing this book was! It is exactly what it claims; Words of comfort and hope for a sad heart. The author’s writing style is down to earth and honest, warm and friendly in a way that made me feel I was not reading her words, but rather, sitting down with her over a cup of coffee and receiving understanding and hope through a personal friendship. I loved the sections - perfect for times when reading large chunks is not easy, something that often happens when people are grieving or going through difficult times. I loved the way the author faced the reality of pain and struggles and then led them into triumph, hope and practical ways to reach a point of dancing in the rain. So clever the way she used rain, mud, seasons and weather. I was drawn in by her story in ten parts and eagerly anticipated each continuation. I felt hope again as I was reminded how not to let the enemy have victory. So practical and achievable with God's help! I loved the poems and anecdotes, both the personal stories and those of friends. So many gems and treasures in there (or should I say, in the author’s words, not silver linings, but golden linings on clouds). I loved the clear Gospel explanation at the end. I read aloud to my children some of the sections that had most touched me, during our nightly devotions. Some quotes made my heart jump as the truth struck me deep down. God brought this book to me at just the right time to remind me of His great love, His purpose in suffering and the great umbrella of hope we have in Jesus Christ.
This book's subtitle is 'Words of comfort and hope for a sad heart', and it certainly is a very hopeful book. The author has been through many difficult circumstances herself (e.g. loss, chronic illness, periods of unemployment, emigrating to a new country), but has come out the other side with a stronger sense of God's love and purposes. Out of those experiences, she is able to help and comfort others who may be going through difficult times.
All of the chapters are short, so it's a book that's easy to dip in and out of. Perfect for a quick read over a cup of coffee. A variety of styles are used, including the author's own life stories and those of others she knows; poems; devotional material and 'little nuggets' that include lists, quotes and other snippets of helpful information. There's much to ponder and plenty of suggestions that could be applied to your own life.
There's also a fictional story in ten parts called 'Every Monday'. It's a lovely story of a widow coming to terms with the loss of her beloved husband. However, I did find it a bit disorienting to have it split up throughout the book. I know that was probably done so that each bit was given in a small chunk, like the rest of the book. However, as it's a book that you can dip in and out of, I found it hard to keep the earlier parts of the story in my head. I ended up reading the whole story in one sitting, then going back and finishing the rest of the book. However, that is only a minor quibble.
The book is full of encouraging stories and wisdom about trusting God through the hard times as well as the good. It does indeed give a lot of hope. Warmly recommended for anyone who might be going through a difficult time or for people who want to find meaning in difficult experiences of the past.
A great companion for anyone going through difficult times who needs re-assurance that all will be well. Gift yourself with this book, or gift a friend.
Dancing in the Rain by Anusha Atukorala has a eye-catching cover that entices me to pick it up and read. Inside, it has an interesting structure, broken up into sections with reflections from the author, Friends' Stories (told in first person), Nuggets (quotes, epigrams, Scripture), My story (from the Anusha's experiences), a poem and a serialised story 'Each Monday'.
It's an interesting mix, with different perspectives and approaches to our feelings, responses and options when facing difficulties and discouragement. The personal stories (both from Anusha and her friends) give testimony to depth of feeling, faith, and God in action in each one's lives. The reflections, nuggets and poems give both comfort, commiseration, as well as inspiration and hope in God's loving presence, spiritual meditations and practical ideas to gain a different perspective on the rain-soaked times, how to survive and even thrive. I think my favourite section is the Each Monday story, as I waited for the next instalment of the narrator's journey.
Overall, it's an easy to read, part devotional, part inspirational gem that brims with Anusha's gentle and vibrant faith. Worth reading and also an excellent gift for those going through hard times.
