Max grew up just outside of New York City, spending most of her formative years outdoors creating wild ghost hunts with neighborhood kids, setting booby-traps to capture unwitting family members, and building clubhouses on top of ten-foot walls. Max wrote her first story at the age of twelve and titled it Circles of Friendship. Through the years, Max has written several short-stories and poems, all of which met the wrath of the “Not Good Enough” monster and ended in fiery demise.

Max regained her confidence when she began writing scholarly articles and research theses on her first trip through graduate school. It took several years for her to break the habit of the formal writing that marred her creativity. An additional Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing was Max’s biggest support in this. Max writes primarily sci-fi/fantasy, paranormal romance, and Young Adult stories.

This was great! First book I have read by Ellendale and now I must read more. This book is free if you have Kindle Unlimited and it makes it an absolute steal. I love cops and docs books and this just fit the bill.

I want to make clear this is a romance. While we have some excitement with the job of a detective and a doctor, the main focus is the romance. It was actually a perfect balance. There was enough going on to keep turning the pages, while your heart warmed as the connection between the mains built.

I do have to admit, at first I thought the dialogue was a little over the top. I think the beginning is just a tad rough, but soon the book finds its groove and it is smooth sailing. Both main characters are likeable and you care about them. Even the secondary characters like Rabbit’s family were well done. They injected a nice dose of humor into a book that was emotional at times. No forced angst, just a feel good story.

I absolutely recommend this to romance fans, especially if you enjoy cops and docs books.

Cops and docs: be still my beating heart! Alice Lange, a detective from the bias crimes unit, finds herself in the ER listening to the gentle voice of the doctor in the next room. Dr Stella Corwin is kind and gentle but also very reserved. Connecting with each other is probably one of the hardest things they've each done in a long time.

This is a really sweet and emotional romance. Both Alice and Stella come from broken places and have dealt with it by closing off. Their process of opening up is quite beautiful. It's set in the same universe as the Four Point Trilogy and Wildrose and while there are some crossovers this is a standalone novel. The story is set 10 years in the future and the only reason I can think of for this is that it gives lots of leeway around current affairs, norms and procedures.

This book is set in the same universe as the ‘Four Point Trilogy’ but it’s a standalone romance with a bit of action at the side. I haven’t read the trilogy but didn’t feel like I missed that much. As a matter of fact, the author recently stated in an interview that she recommended readers who haven’t read her novels to start with this one (The Lesbian Book Club with Clare Lydon podcast).

Alice Lange is a Bias Crimes Detective who is very guarded with the matters of the heart. When she ends up in a hospital emergency room after a clash with a hate crime group, she meets Dr. Stella Corwin, another guarded but gentle soul. It is obvious that they are attracted to each other but will they be able to go past their own emotional baggage and give love a chance?

‘Rabbit’ has been on my ‘To Be Read’ list for a long time due to the good reviews and its weird title for a romance. It seems the title comes from Alice’s habit of being late, like the rabbit in ‘Alice in Wonderland’. This is a cops and docs lesbian romance book but the blurb isn’t too specific on what to expect. I have to give a trigger warning that this book makes references to rape as short non-explicit flashbacks scenes. There are some good action scenes and a bit of a police investigation but the main focus is on the romance.

Written in first person from the exclusive point of view of Alice, the reader can follow her struggle with her love life and her career. I liked the character building, Ms. Ellendale writes complex characters, vulnerable and sweet, who struggle to find their way in life. The chemistry between the main characters is built slowly but surely at an unhurried pace that makes it feel realistic as both leads have difficult inner struggles to overcome.

The cast of secondary characters is also well written and help discover Alice’s personality in all its different expressions. Having said that, I felt that some of Alice’s interactions with them, especially at the beginning, were a bit odd and forced. After a few chapters, my sensation disappeared and I was able to enjoy the story a lot.

Overall, a very good lesbian cops and docs romance book with a bit of action at the side. 4 stars.

This is the first book that I have read by this author. If I recall correctly, I initially put it on my list of possible after spotting 1 or more friends liking the book. And the fact that this book is in the Kindle Unlimited program made things a lot easier.

First off: I do not recall how quickly I picked up on this particular factoid, but this book is not contemporary to our time. It is set roughly 10 years in the future, in a world created from what can be seen from today’s headlines. You know, those headlines involving death by guns, casual racism and sexism from elected officials, attempts to roll back protections of LGBT people – well, we are in that world, or, I mean, 10 years into that world.

I’d relatively recently reread a book set about thirty years after its publication date. And one of my observations was that it seemed a lot more conservative, than I’d have expected for a book set 30 years later in Japan. Seemed weird to me. And there were no little hints dropped as to why things were that way. Here? It’s obvious why certain things would be the way they would be, ten years into our future.

Heck, one of the two main characters was acting a little oddly about intimacy, and one of my initial thoughts was that maybe she’s having some ‘issues’ with coming out/being out. Or whatever. And ten years after everything that’s been happening right now? Yeah, I normally have troubles with ‘modern’ people having issues, but in this situation? I’d have no issue with that being in the story-line. I’d made a mistake, though, and that wasn’t why she was having issues (though Alice’s roommate Marc ‘isn’t out’, so there was a storyline there that used that ‘not out’ trope – and I was, oddly, perfectly fine with it (partly because he didn’t seem to actually be hiding but whatever)).

Well, this review started weirdly.

This book is titled ‘Rabbit’. Rabbit is a nickname Alice Lange’s family gave her (mostly her brothers) for various reasons, many of which involve her name being Alice. Alice is the main character, and, unless I missed something, solo point of view. She’s a detective in Seattle, working for the Bias Crimes group. Most of the time she spends going to schools and refugee camps letting them know the law, and their rights regarding harassment, bullying, and the like. That, at least, has been her recent tasks on her job – most of the book, though, involves her off her job for various reasons. Rational logical sane reasons.

For various reasons Alice kept ending up in a particular hospital. Whereupon she bumped into a Doctor Corwin. The two develop a friendship. That, later, leads to more. Both, oddly enough, are shocked when they learn that the other is a lesbian – though both had been wishing the other was before the revelation.

I do not wish to reveal everything, so I’ll just note: both of the main characters, Alice and Corwin I mean, have ‘issues’ that cause them problems with relationships. Both issues play a role in this books unwinding plot path.

I liked the book and will look to see if any of the other books by this author interest me.

This is the first book i have read from this author and certainly not the last. It was well written with nicely flushed out main and secondary characters. There is no real police mystery or hospital trama that drives this story its actually Alice and Stella that do that. Yes, there is some medical stuff and police stuff but its in there to add to the characters not the other way around (well that made more sense in my head i think). Anyway, if you're looking for a quick slow burning romance with a little bit of drama, humor, docs/cops, and some other stuff then this might just be your cup of tea...or glass of wine...or pint of beer...lol i could go on and on. An amazing story!

Both women have to face their own demons before they can live and love to the fullest. They know they can't keep running away from their problems forever. The road to love again is long and a bumpy ride. The storyline was well developed, with vulnerable characters you really can bond with, excellent banter between the friends and a lot of excitement. I loved how they grow gradually. It was slow and beautiful. Following their ups and downs was very enjoyable. A great novel of love, loss, betrayal, hate crimes and abuse. There are so many good things to say about this book, so I just say read it and enjoy. This was my first one by this author and definitely not my last.

loved it. MC's have chemistry...This book as the 'feels'. It as that funny family banter that I absolutely love in a book. It also has a great strong story-line that keeps you tuning the pages. This is the first book I've read from this author and I will be reading more from her.

My first book by this author. Great writing, characters to fall in love with, angst that is justified, great dialogue and even a few hot sex scenes.
The story veered into overdramatic cops and docs mode at times but getting to know Alice and Stella makes up for the action scenes near the end of the book.
Overall a good solid read and an author to watch.

‘Rabbit’ didn’t really stand out to me. It was ok and wasn’t poorly written, but I just feel underwhelmed by it.

Eh. That’s the only pseudo-word I can think of to describe how I feel about it.

The writing was decent and the storyline flowed well, but almost everything in this book has been done before so I can’t say that I recommend it or that I don’t. I will say that I don’t think anyone is missing anything if they skip it...but that’s just my opinion.

This book sucked me in from the first screen on my Kindle. I didn’t want to go to work (but I did anyway), and I didn’t want to pay attention to my family (although I did that too)—I just wanted to devour this book. Despite life obligations, I still managed to read Rabbit quite quickly because I couldn’t not read it in every spare moment.

Rabbit is 100% a romance, but it’s an angstier and darker novel than I’ve read in a while and it works so well. There’s a side storyline with Alice having workplace issues that give the story and her arc more depth, and add grit that wouldn’t have been there otherwise. Ellendale has her plotting and pacing down pat, and the excellent character growth makes everything all the more satisfying.

I enjoyed this a lot. The MCs are extremely likable and you can't help but root for them. It is fairly predictable once you get past the backstories. But enjoyable none the less.

3.5 rounded up because how fun is a family that gives you the nickname Rabbit?

I'm with Lex on this one. This is the first book I have read from Ellendale and it will not be my last.

I really like the MC's. And the more I got to know them, the more and more I liked them. It should be noted that some serious awful things have occurred in both of the MC's pasts. So while there was angst in this book, it was believable angst and not as a result of shitty things the MC's do to each other. In fact both MC's are extremely respectful and compassionate towards each other throughout the book. Hip hip hooray!

Because this is a romance, expect the given HEA at the end. I don't care. These 2 MC's had been through a lot, they desire the cherry on top of the overly sweet cake.

Again not bad, but not nearly as satisfying as Four Point. But I liked both the MCs and it was well written

Side note: Ok, I know Walsh is an old white dude, but he constantly screws up in all the previous books including this one due to his poor judgement of people, is an arse towards everyone and still keeps his job? I get this is supposed to be USA but damn, I'm getting fed up.

Detailed score: 4.25

Oooohhhhhhhhh. This book was perfectly on point for my preferred brand of angst. Empathic - tough on the outside, wounded underneath - doc/cop who learn to let their walls down around each other. With a side dose of humour/banter from supporting characters.

It won’t be for everyone. Avoid if:
- you are particularly triggered by references to sexual assault
- you hate it when the characters cry after sex

Otherwise. Dive into this book and enjoy a wonderful feels (not just swoon) massage. Definitely going to seek out more from this author.

"You're watching your back
Like you can't relax
You're trying to be cool
You look like a fool to me
Tell me
Why do you have to go and make things so complicated?
I see the way you're acting like you're somebody else gets me frustrated
Life's like this you
And you fall, and you crawl, and you break
And you take, what you get, and you turn it into
Honesty and promise me I'm never gonna find you fake it"
Avril Lavigne

I would like to dedicate that song to Detective Alice Lange. I had to stop at 35%, Alice aka Rabbit was really getting on my nerves and since she carried a gun and I don't, I raised the white flag.

Most of the trustworthy and experienced Lesfic reviewers liked/loved the book so listen to them.

And for those who love Ms.Ellendale's work and stumbled into my reviews for the two dnf books, Let's not rain on each others' parade:)

Cops? Doctors? Yes, please!
Rape. Bleakness. No, thanks.

This was not for me. And if I had known it featured rape as such a central theme, I’d have never picked it up.

Well-written and all that. But for me as depressing as 7 days of rain on a holiday. You thought it’d be great but....

It ended better than I thought it would.

It was hard for me to get beyond Allie's personality which better resembled a 19 year old college student than a 30 something bias crimes detective. Thankfully I stuck with it because the last 1/3 of the story was engaging.

This book is a gem I found on kindle unlimited. You just never know what you’re going to find there; some books are awesome and, well, some of them suck. This was a great story. The main characters are all kinds of wounded and I loved the way they came together. It’s a bit unrealistic but that’s my whole attraction to fiction. I’m excited I found a new author to read and all her books are on ku. Win, win! Fist pump!

Well, I followed up Wildrose immediately with this one, and gotta say I almost felt like it was a different author. What did I miss, high reviewers? I really wanted to like this one, but....

The plot was again secondary, and quite intense (trigger warning of assault/rape), and could have been better fleshed out. I didn't see the attraction of the mains, and really didn't like MC Alice. She was frightfully immature, I can't say that enough.  However I did like her respect for taking the relationship with MC Stella slow due to her horrible past experience.... this was paced well and believable. Oh, and the breast grabs from Wildrose? They continue, folks. WHY all the grasping and grabbing?!  The intimate scenes were on a whole other planet compared to the raciness and creativity of previous book, these ones usually involving full on water-works (from the eyes you pervs) of some kind. Kinda killed the mood.

Goddamn it is there ever a lot of crying. Guys, SO MUCH CRYING. Every second page someone is crying...over lattes, during sex, walking along the street, at work, during sports, eating dinner, petting dogs, drinking booze.....damn. And minus one or two big reveals, none of the tears really affected me. Am I a stone cold asshole? (don't answer that).

Glaring inconsistencies annoy me, such as this quote: "Since the election in 2016, ten years ago, hate crimes in the country have risen exponentially." Correct me if I'm wrong but this book was Not set in 2026 right?

There is a "big event" that happens right near the end of the book that finally adds some oomph and drama, which I did start getting drawn into but then the book ended somewhat abruptly, so a little too late. I just didn't feel invested in this relationship at all, I'm sorry to say. So even though there were a few parts that I thought could have been fairly strong, it was too disjointed and I can't give this more than "it was ok" rating.

This was a great feel good romance. The story was well padded out and answered all my questions by the end of the novel. It was so well written I found myself welling up at some of the more heartbreaking scenes especially toward the end.

I liked the dynamic between the characters, the rhythm of the book and the plot, on more than one occasion I laughed while reading, which is always a good sign. It took me a while to read it but for work and life issues, nothing related to the quality of the book.

The MCs and their background stories where engaging and believable, the struggle, the conflicts with what they have lived and what they want to live and all the fears that entails I think that was what got me hooked.

Also... I may be a bad lesbian BUUUUT the sex scenes were good, and necessary for the growth of the relationship, but I did skip some of them because I wanted to know what happened with the rest of the story... Sorry 😁

This is a great read

Books are different to movies. If this story was on a screen (large or small) it would be an average rom-com at best, maybe attracting attention if a big-name star was attached to it.

But in my experience, the same rule doesn't apply to books. I was completely wrapped up in Allie's life in the hours I spent reading this book. The characters were engaging, their issues relatable and the sex was hot (though not the focus, this story would have worked just as well without it).

Max Ellendale is a new-to-me author. I'm looking forward to reading more of her work.

First one by this author and I could not have loved it more!
Not at all what I expect and usually find in a cop/medical sort of drama.
I really liked the 'supporting cast' they had strong personalities that complemented the book.
I laughed out loud one minute and cried the next with the main characters.
The most impressive feat was the perfect balance between humor and sensitivity, I can honestly say this is a great book and I can't wait to read more of Ellendale.

Romance with a hint of crime

—“Eventually, one begins to believe that she isn't worthy of faithfulness. It must've been my fault that I wasn't good enough for them to stay with only me.”

—“Part of me didn't believe it was me at all. That same part, the one that often led with the inability to trust, screamed warnings at me. Told me to not feel too much. To enjoy the sex and move on.”

—“For now, loving someone was the easier part. Allowing myself to fall in love, that was another story...”
+ • + • + • +

This story was absolute perfection!!! With every page I read, the more I identified with & felt connected to these characters then the more I became invested in their journey of revealing pieces of themselves & exploring each other.

It was just so realistic & relatable. I appreciate the rawness, vulnerability & innocence in how it was appreciated without being distorted &/or diminished from what it addressed!! Awesome & Amazing!!
