Callie Penrose - a wizard with a splash of Angel’s blood flowing through her veins - kind of broke the Vatican and their band of holy-warrior wizard-priests, the Shepherds. Officially, the report stated Callie forgot to turn the other cheek, and things escalated....
She returns home to Kansas City to find new gangs of supernaturals roving the streets, preying on the innocent while the local factions do nothing. Although not unified, everyone seems to agree on one point....
Callie Penrose must die.
And she’s still hearing those strange Whispers in her mind - much more frequently than before, and not nearly as...forgiving.
But when an epic betrayal blindsides her and she discovers the truth of her birth - why Heaven and Hell have been so interested in her - Callie’s world begins to crumble, and she must decide whether she wants to be a good girl....
Or if it’s time to be a little naughty.
No matter how hard you try, you can’t make an Angel cry....

Now, let's talk about this specimen of a man named Shayne...
Shayne Silvers writes the "Nate Temple Series" which features a foul-mouthed, flawed, young wizard with a chip on his shoulder attempting to protect St. Louis from the various nasties we all know and fear from our childhood bedtime stories.
Nate's been known to suckerpunch an Angel, cow-tip the Minotaur, and steal Death's horse in order to prove his point. His utter disregard for consequences and self-preservation will have you laughing and cringing on the edge of your seat.
But he has a lot to learn. Namely, how not to be so big of an A-Hole.
Shayne holds two high-ranking black belts, and enjoys conversing about anything Marvel, Magical, or Mythological. You might find him writing in a coffee shop near you, cackling madly into his computer screen while pounding shots of espresso.
Silvers is continuing his trend of stability at high level plot engagement and character development through this installment, with another more introspective focus on the central protagonist, this time on more of the nature of her duality and revelations about where she came from as much as where she's going. Callie Penrose continues to impress as a hard-hitting capable protagonist, as well as a realistically torn, vulnerable woman feeling emotionally frayed and overtaxed as the story unfolds in the short term. Longer term implications are foreshadowed again with Silvers' typical style, and the book ends on a resolved but not quite satisfied with all results note.
The overlap cameo with Nate Temple is much shorter and more straightforward in this installment, again a testament to Silvers' wisdom in not letting his protagonists overwhelm eachother's books needlessly and the limited engagement he has with the story is short and sweet in the manner of highlighting more of his interrelations with Callie than it does with him affecting her book's plot. It gives the impression of them starting to settle into eachother's narratives in the manner a new couple settles into eachother's lives, putting them roughly at "having toothbrushes at eachother's houses" in this book to follow said metaphor. Pitching a proper shared universe can be difficult to manage into the longer term and Silvers shows no signs of faltering thus far.
One part that did seem to falter a bit however was the depth of one of the last fights in the story's climax, a one on one duel against one of the central antagonists. Typically Silvers has maintained a good balance of quickly paced action and descriptive narrative, but this was very much the first such fight I'd read him describing where I started to feel bored with how he constructed things. The blow to blow emphasis teetered over the edge of descriptive depth and just into over-saturation, enough that I started to feel tugged out of the immersiveness of the story just from how much effort I had to put into figuring out who was doing what and countering what from hit to hit. I am hopeful it was more on the aspect of the limited scope of the fight and location of it, rather than an oversight or misstep for the book.
Overall however the story holds up in all other aspects and the other fight scenes have a more engaging balance to follow along with. As usual I look forward to seeing where Silvers takes the story next.
Oh my goodness. Callie goes through some serious changes in this installment, while battling Templars, Angels and Demons. And revelations from her past, no less! Keep them coming, Shayne.
To me, I really saw some growth in Callie in this book. Roland is great, but her new allies and mentors are helping her see a greater picture of the world around her. Her BFF, lovingly nicknamed the bipolar bear shifter, is a constant that keeps her grounded. Her new friend, Phinx the Sphinx is a great new character and of course Darling and Dear never fail to entertain and subtlety provide clues to help Callie out. If only she could understand their double meanings.
Another awesome book by a very talented author. Callie kicks a$$. No one should question that now, if they ever did. Callie finding out about her origins was a little bit predictable, but I'm glad it's finally out there. Now, how does this relate to Nate's powers? Guess we'll have to wait and see.
What an awesome adventure! Shayne Silvers does NOT disappoint and is adept at sweeping you into Callie's escapades. This novel was her growing up / coming of age / Maturing to Nate's* level book and it left me wishing that the next book was out _NOW_ so I can see where she goes from here.
In this book her innocence is traded for a graceful maturity that is earned and embraced well, and where she was a young woman in the earlier books, lacking a certain degree of depth, she brings it all to the forefront and shows us that she is not only worthy of the role she's taken for her region, but the best party for it. Storylines that have been carried from one novel to the next were wrapped up, and new offshoots were created. Without giving away the plotline too much - I can say that if you like urban fantasy and have read anything else by Shayne Silvers, you are going to love anything written about Callie Penrose. My only advice? Have time to read because you won't want to put the book down once you get your hands on it.
*Nate being the main character in his other series that is in the same universe, heck same state, and it's totally worth reading all of Shayne Silvers work.
In this latest book from Shayne Silvers’ Feathers and Fire series, we follow our heroine (or sometimes anti-heroine) Callie Penrose as she goes shopping at Darling and Dear, befriends a Sphinx, and learns the story of her parents.
The magical artifact in this story is something called the Ring of Aandaleeb. It is evidently used to contain demons. The Angels and Templars are fighting over who gets to control it, and both of them want Callie on their side, thinking she can control it better than anyone with her mixed heritage. Trying to determine which of two Angels is trustworthy (if either of them is), Callie gets to watch one of them Fall and become a demon before her eyes.
Some pretty scary stuff near the end, but also there are a lot of funny scenes, particularly some of the ones with Phix the Sphinx, and a scene where Callie takes Cain (the first murderer) to meet her father and his new girlfriend.
Nate Temple (of the Nate Temple series) makes several appearances, even offering some words of wisdom. Did he learn something during his visit to Hell?
When I first started reading this series, and the Temple series as well, I thought the author boxed himself into a corner after the first books (which sets the stage and introduces you to the characters nicely) by coming up with plots that seem to be built up to resemble something closer to an end of a series then the beginning. Shayne consistently brings out the big guns with each book, though, and while the plots are almost excessively grand (which is part of their charm) they make sense and the stories move forward smoothly, the character growth is marvelous, there are always surprises, and each book always engages the imagination.
This author is self-published, and sometimes that’s a gamble, but Silver’s writing is on par with many well-known writers from established publishers, and the editing is excellent. I’ve enjoyed each and every one of his books, enjoyed his growth as a writer, recommended him to friends, and I hope that he continues writing for a long time to come.
BEST BOOK YET! Start reading this series right now. No really, stop reading this review and get the book already. Then take the next 24 hours off from life and just strap in for the most exciting ride! Are you really still reading this?! Go call in sick from work, send the kids to a relative, buy good snacks, snuggle up somewhere comfy and get this series! Heck grab the Obsidian Son series while you’re on amazon! Who needs a job anyway? Your relative can raise kids for a few weeks! You deserve some adventure and these books will absolutely deliver!
Every book Shayne writes is so incredibly brilliant and funny and twisty and surprising that I think he can’t possibly top it. Then he releases the next and completely blows my mind. I don’t think he’s human. I think he’s from some master alien race from a planet dependent on word weaving for survival. I don’t have word weaving skills great enough to express how thrilling and fun this book has been! An absolute masterpiece! 5 stars!
The more books I read in this series, I feel that Shayne Silvers is getting a good handle on the character of Callie, and in this book, we find out more about Callie’s past and parentage, and see her coming into her power. Nate does show up in a minor supporting role, but it’s always fun to see these two series intertwine. I’ve stuck to reading these in order, but I am skipping the Phantom Queen Diaries, within the Templeverse, I gave them a try, but they just didn’t click with me. The Feather and Fire series with Callie has a much stronger religious undertone than the Nate Temple books. In this book, finding and stopping the new gangs of bad supernaturals on the streets, mixed with the Templars, Fallen Angels and Angels – mix in a polar bear, witch and a sphinx, and in Silver’s worlds, it’s a hot mess. But you’ll definitely want to pay attention to this one, lots of truths revealed under an intricately written plot with action and humor. Get ready to stay up late.
Once again a masterpiece by Shayne Silvers. I so love Callie and this story brought out both old friends and enemies as well as some new ones. I must say Sphinx is a wonderful addition. Callie can't help but run into nasty Templars, Angels, Freaks, humans and even a Fae! She continues to become a stronger woman, as each new book is written. I so enjoy reading as she shares her heart, love and concern for friends, her city and the world. She sacrifices so much of herself for others and I hope Mr Silvers will finally allow the "glue" between those two special characters to finally come together!! Darling and Dear are just amazing and I would suggest a book just about them!! I can't wait for the next addition to this wonderful and amazing series! Kathy Barber Doyle - 4/21/2018
After reading this 4th installment of Feathers and Fire series through Kindle Unlimited, all I can say is Wow! Callie and Claire have come into their own as part of the supernatural heroes business. We see a few recurring characters from the Nate Temple series, and Callie handles them almost as well as he does. Then her supporting cast is getting further entrenched in her team (Dorian Gray and Kane - yes the original Kane!) We find Callie becoming more mature and sure of herself, which I truly enjoyed. We learn who her parents were, what hardships they had to endure to even become her parents, and why they had to give her up to save her life. Callie and Nate have a few very interesting moments. Oh, and did I mention a heinous betrayal and a powerful new ally? Great plotline, lots of action. A must read!
THIS REVIEW STANDS FOR THE FIRST FOUR BOOKS... so yes they are the same.
A tale of a female protagonist who doesn't know who she is, working for the church and mouthy as hell. Honestly it is pretty mundane for urban fantasy (not a complaint, I am writing a book that isn't really any different either).
While filled with some cliches, and not the most fresh take it is interesting. The characters are good (I like Callie), the storyline is interesting enough. There is something extra that I can't quite point out (which is why I bought the next five books, they come in three book sets for the first six books).
It is a good read, goes pretty quickly but don't expect something revolutionary. Its like an American Diner experience, it doesn't surprise, but it does hit the notes you want and leaves you full
Callie Penrose has returned to Kansas City. She has defeated demons (twice). She brought down corruption and backstabbing in the Vatican's Shepherds. She discovered and stood toe to toe with the leader of the elusive Templar order. Now she is home, and things are just getting harder. An angel is trying to recruit her to recover a lost artifact that could sway the power balance in the city, and may hold clues to Callie's past. The catch, the artifact is currently in the possession of her good "friends" the Templars. She will need all the help of her (bi-polar)bear-shifter best friend, some friends with, shall we say.....questionable morals, and maybe a few new friends from St. Louis to get through this one.
Solid 4.5 A lot has changed while Callie was out of town but now she is back and she is going to kick some as$, not only is she ready to take back this town but Claire bear has much better control over her new self so is Callie's side kick whether she wants it or not. It was great to see characters from the Nate temple series cross over to Callies as it makes both series more solid and balanced. There is plenty of LOL, oh no you didn't, twists and surprises to keep you hooked to the end and leave you wanting more. Even when you get to the end you reflect on what yo have read for hidden meanings and hint to further Nate or Callie stories and the mystery of and about Darling and Dear gets deeper!
After the cataclysmic events of Whispers, Callie has to returned to Kansas City to deal with the fallout there. Kansas City has become a scarier place, with a seeming increase in Freak violence and gang activity. Callie is questioning her place in Kansas City, the Freak community and the world at large, while also having to deal with Heaven, Hell and unaligned parties either wanting her dead or to use her as a disposable pawn to their own ends. The Free will granted to humanity is admired and despised by Angels because they don’t have it, but that doesn’t mean Angels can’t fall from Grace or remain seemingly virtuous while finding ways to subvert orders. And the denizens of Hell aren’t always as evil as advertised in the Good Book
Again, Shayne Silvers delivers an addictive read with a constant roller coaster of feels. I’d happily attend the Church of Callie regularly.

Callie is back in full glory. After the shakeup in Italy, she wants to spend some quality time on her own streets in KC. Amidst the criminal uptick, she finds rumors of some group or gang that has the Freaks terrified and Callie considered persona non grata. Add an Angelic mission turning a bit sideways, and the stage is set for the usual craziness. At least she can trust in an angel's agenda. Right? Be prepared for all the action, snark, ridiculous situations, unveiling of pasts, chaos, cameos, betrayals, and “That just happened!” you could wish for. In the end there's one pertinent question: who will Callie go OLTSTMNT on?
Omg! I did not see the twists with Beckett coming! This maybe my favorite in the series so far! I really do love each of them but I like how Callie is coming into her own. I really want to see more of Callie and Nate together they both deserve happiness and they compliment each other so well. Darling and Dears characters crack me up with there wittiness. Shayne Silver’s is one of my all time favorite authors because his books are ones you can just get lost in. Absolutely Freaking Fantastic! I can’t wait for what’s next. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review after reading this arc. But I loved it so much I purchased it as well.
I had gotten a teaser, just a couple chapters, and I figured I could read that far before bed. Next thing I know my wife is telling me that it's four in the morning and "Don't you have to wake up in a couple hours?" Needless to say the book was finished a few short hours after my tasks had been.
Callie and her friends continue to grow and shape themselves into who and what they must become, stumbling and still growing along the way. Come, step into their world, or maybe pull them into ours for a time, and know that a true Master has taken hold of a worthy story once more.
Every time I’ve finished reading one of Shayne’s books I’m left a bit shell shocked, satisfied and yet hungry for more. And I think to myself, how is he going to match that level of WOW! in the next book? Well, he has certainly done it again! Nothing with Callie- or Nate, for that matter- is ever boring and Angel’s Roar was a feast of action, mystery, magic and some exquisite plot twists! So many answers are uncovered and new ones will take root in this remarkable and wonderful latest installment of the Feathers and Fire series! I seriously heart me some Callie. And Claire. And...well, all of it. High five Shayne!
Having read the entire universe out of order, I started this book with high expectations of what I just knew would be the apex of the story. Shayne did not disappoint on the climb to that point. While there were points that were “slower” they weren’t boring and were ultimately necessary.
Callie seems to now be a fully developed character and part of that character is the mystery of her past/parentage. This outing gets us deeper into her past, while we don’t get to find out what Callie is short for (yet) we do get some new and interesting information about her. Yet another Shayne Silvers book that is tough to put down.
More and more I find myself amazed by Shane Silvers. This fourth book in the Feathers and Fire series is no exception. Although I don't care as much for the books he coauthors, Nate Temple, Callie Penrose, and their assorted friends are quickly becoming one of my favorite immersive worlds. If you like magic, adventure, humor, intrigue, mythology, fairy tales, demons, angels, gods and/or monsters, you'll enjoy these books. And if not, what the hell. I'll duel you for your copy. Seriously, you and me, midnight at the dueling grounds. You win, I buy it back from you. I win, I get to keep it. What have you got to loose?!
Callie, the half Nephilim, half whatever takes to the streets of Kansas City to do what she does best, kick some ass. As she tracks a gang that is causing havoc she runs into several other hurdles along the way. The biggest is Angel the Angel who doesn't have a name anymore except for Nameless. Yeah, have fun figuring that one out. There is a betrayal in the book, but my opinion varies from most of Silvers readers. I think Callie dropped the ball when it came to a friend. It shows that she isn't perfect and still has a lot to learn.
Another funny, action-packed story from Shayne Silvers.
Shayne Silvers artfully weaves his characters in with figures from Myth and Legend, and Literary Masterpieces, into incredible tales of Sacrifice and Triumph, Light vs Dark, staggering Loss, Hope and Despair, Feathers and Fire and Family. It is non-stop Action! I really like the Personal Growth that happened along the way as well. We get introduced to Brokeback Vampire and a Faebio in the first couple of chapters, and the rest of the book has many more...
You need to read this book that has my highest recommendation!
Once again Mr. Silvers demonstrates his mastery of storytelling and the genre. He wields his pen like a weapon, pulling the reader into his TempleVerse, running them through the gamet of emotions. When done, I had laughed, cried, gasped in fear, and shook from relief. New characters join old to produce a book worthy of my full attention.
If you like urban fantasy, then give this book and series a try. The humor is wonderful, and the hidden tidbits (Easter eggs) are enticing and exciting to find. I highly recommend this book and this author.
The only way to explain how I read book 4 of the Feathers and Fire Series. I basically inhaled it. I started with this series on my TBR list enjoying The prequel to the Nate Temple series. I finally was able to give it a chance when I decided to become a KU (kindle unlimited) member. The series was available and pausing all my other ebooks I was reading. Even when I finished this one I'm all ready to basically once again "inhale" the next Callie Penrose book in this series. I am definitely a new and will be a long time fan.
I would normally give anything In the Templeverse series a 4 or 5 but I found myself wondering if I had read ahead at least twice during this book. Some parts were just confusing and needed further explanation as to what the hell was going on. For example, there is a sequence with Phix that left me baffled. I couldn’t make out if Silver’s was doing it as part of the plot line or if he hadn’t quite made up his mind what had happened for himself and after finishing the book, I think it may be the later.
Shayne did it again, he took me on another rollercoaster ride of emotions. I fall more in love with his work with each book. While breaking your heart you are simultaneously compelled to keep reading. It's amazing to me how even the characters with the smallest parts are so well written that you feel you know them. This is one heck of an adventure and I'm both excited & terrified for the culmination. I'll miss everyone so much when it's over but I can't wait to see how it all ends.
Wow! Just when you think a series has reached its pinnacle, the templeverse soars to new heights. If you are not a fan of adventure twists and turns and freaks and angels; this book is not for you. But if you love seat of your pants craziness and devil may care plans, this is the book for you. Follow Callie into her latest adventure with Angels and Freaks that will keep you begging for more!
