At twenty-nine years old, Blake is living the life she has worked hard to build for herself in exactly the way she wants to live it: unattached.
Meanwhile, somewhere on the other side of town, Hayden has just turned thirty and she wants nothing more than to be with the one woman she cannot have, living a life she can only imagine.
When Blake and Hayden’s worlds collide, they take each other by surprise. Suddenly, everything these two women know about what they have and what they think they want is being called into question.
Michele L. Rivera is a Massachusetts native who has been writing lesbian romance since 2013. It all started with the release of her first book, “Taking the Lead,” which is a fictional story loosely based on her own coming out experience.
Through her writing, Michele strives to share her strong personal beliefs that love is love and that happily ever afters do exist.
When she’s not writing love stories or poetry, she enjoys cuddling with her adorable cats, sipping on whiskey, watching movies, and searching for artistic inspiration within the human experience.
4* 5* 4* 3* 1* Let me try and translate those ratings into words.
The book starts off immediately with the two main characters meeting in a bar when Hayden hits on Blake. Some readers might either love or hate this first chapter because Hayden comes off as pushy and even a little creepy. Oddly enough I really liked it because it's obvious that Hayden is no smooth operator and is pretty harmless.
The next couple of chapters had me laughing out loud several times because Hayden and Blake's inner dialogues are often hilarious. Especially Hayden's who has a crush on her roommate and straight best friend Ava. At first I thought it was a case of I chase you, you chase him and no one is willing to turn around but there is a lot more to that story which gets explored later on.
As the mains slowly get to know each other over time and they start to develop obvious feelings for each other the author throws the first money wrench. I won't go into details but I saw it coming from a mile away and so will you. Just when I thought it would be smooth sailing from that point on because we passed the infamous 75% point the author decided to bury me under an avalanche of money wrenches! 84% into the book and the stupidest reasons for drama are once again pulled from a grab bag.
The last point of critique would be the language. It's like the author googled "how to use millennial slang". Get ready for 'the struggle is real' 'I got mad skillz homie' 'adulting' 'true story' and of course 'feels'. I felt like grabbing a megaphone and yelling "STAHP" because you know, I am an older millennial after all.
My first impression here was that Blake is an asshole. I can’t actually imagine someone being as rude as she is in the first chapter. I almost stopped reading this simply because I didn’t like her…and then Hayden’s somewhat desperate reaction towards her, well, there goes all respect for both of them right out the window. These are the two main characters and I already disliked them both right away…
I hung on because I typically like Michele Rivera’s books. She tells simple romance stories that are entertaining and she is usually one of my go-to KU authors.
A few chapters later and Blake was still a bit of an asshole, but Rivera eventually won me over when Blake finally makes a statement that characterizes her as capable of human emotions . She became sympathetic to me in this moment (but that still doesn’t excuse being a jerk to people you don’t know). Hayden grew on me, as well, because her internal dialogue is just amusing and her quirkiness is adorable.
I think if this started out differently, perhaps without Blake acting like a pompous jerk and Hayden not acting like a cling-on, I would have enjoyed it more. They eventually grow on one another, and the reader, but I would hope that in the real world, these two never would have spoken again after that first night...for both their sakes.
All in all, a decent enough read if you can get through the first few chapters. Blake becomes a human being and Hayden eventually stops acting desperate. These two begin actually talking (without Hayden having to fight like she’s pulling Blake’s teeth), and opening up to one another, and it becomes easier to sense the emotional and physical chemistry forming as they become more vulnerable.
There is some unnecessary drama towards the end when Hayden is reactive instead of responsive. As much as I liked her inner dialogue, Hayden is a really insecure character and I didn’t know if I wanted to shake her or hug her.
I’m having a hard time rating this because I did enjoy a good portion of it; the middle held so much promise and the actual ending (after the reactive drama) was nice, too. The physical chemistry here was actually pretty good and the intimate scenes were well done. I just can’t get over the way they meet. If this was the real world, I don’t think these two would have made it further than chapter one. I’m giving this 3* because it is readable, but it comes with a warning that there are some ‘ugh’ moments to get through…and as Alexis pointed out, the language is a bit young, but I’ve read books that were even worse. I was able to semi-ignore it here because I had fair warning.
I really do like most of Rivera's books and this one gets added to the list. Its a light-hearted, little drama, easy read. The chapters alternate points of view between Hayden and Blake. Nothing new but what is great is that the two charcters have two different and distinct voices. Sometimes when authors do the switch I always gwt confused on whose pov I am reading from...not with this one. Hayden is sweet and for lack of a better word nice. Whereas Hayden is brash, rude, and blunt. I loved it. If you have time and looking for something to make you smile in the end then try this one. Its also free on kindleUnlimited.
OK....this was good! It is told from both sides. One chapter is Blake's, one chapter is Hayden's. It's steamy with a little angst. It's not perfect. The best friend/room mate thing was too easily resolved. The ending is way too abrupt. But the in betweens-are really good. If you have Kindle Unlimited it's free which makes it even better!!
So, I’m getting a below your mouth vibe in here or maybe I’m just imagining it. I don’t really know. But nonetheless I like it. It’s cute and sweet and I wish it was a bit longer. More sweet moments between Hayden and Blake.
Not My Type cooks up a lesbian romance between women committed to the single life.
Blake Caruso and Hayden Walcott find themselves spending Friday night at the same girl bar called Luscious. Blake came with her best friend Grace who happens to be having drunken "sexy time" in the bathroom with a pick up. As Blake slowly drinks at the bar waiting for Grace to text her so they can leave, she notices a woman checking her out. Hayden regularly finds women to hook up with when she hangs out at Luscious. Hayden hits on Blake and encounters a brick wall. She refuses the drink that Hayden sent over, she mocks bad pick up lines and tops it off by insisting bluntly that Hayden's not her type. Shifting gears and not backing down, Hayden makes a generous offer of friendship and adds an invitation to hang out. When Grace finally sends a text message, Blake leaves the bar without a backward glance but she tells Hayden her first name.
Hayden heads home afterward and tells her best friend and roommate Ava everything that happened at Luscious. Ava and Hayden met in college, shared a dorm room and have been friends/roomies for twelve years. Ava wants Hayden to make more friends and possibly fall for a girlfriend. Ava's been trying to find a man of her own, but she keeps failing. She can't find her own special someone, but she plans to track down Blake for her friend. Hayden promised not to cyber stalk Blake, even though she likes her. Ava made no such promise.
Not My Type is a spirited and light hearted look at what happens when players fall in love. Club hook ups, unrequited crushes, bad break ups and internet "dating" kept Hayden and Blake so busy that they ignored love. As soon as they start spending time together, their usual distractions go away. Michele Rivera writes very entertaining and memorable novels. I have been reading them for years and always like them. Not My Type brings skilled writing to a complicated theme. The main characters alternate narrating, internal dialogue provides key insights and lengthy dialogue dominates the storytelling. My biggest reservation concerns the emotional immaturity of two thirty year old main characters. For most of the novel, the women behave about ten years younger than their actual age. It made it hard for me to take the characters seriously or to envision any significant lifestyle changes. It was the inspired love story that won me over. This book is so good that I was sorry when it ended.
Really enjoyed this one! Well-written, both MCs were great (although Hayden was my favourite), fun, friendship, honesty, and a little seriousness added in regards to Hayden's sister. Lots of sweet moments. A nice read, I look forward to another by this author. This isn't the first I've read and it definitely won't be the last.
I really enjoyed the characters and the storyline. I tend to gravitate more towards erotica as opposed to the romantic love story, but the story was strong enough to hold my attention on it's own which is hard to do. My attention span lasts about 2 seconds so if the first few pages dont peak my interest.l, I dont even bother. This one I thoroughly enjoyed.
3.5 Stars. This book was refreshing to read, I've been in a little bit of a slump and wanted something different. Yes, this started out seeming like it was going to be about a girl that wouldn't take "no" for an answer and would be cute but annoying about it.. But did a good job of turning itself into a romance that I quite enjoyed reading. Plus, girls in suspenders and lingerie stores.
I'm not spoiling the romance; there is a fair amount of personal trauma, people who deal with their emotions with sex, and some confrontation that I didn't REALLY think was necessary.. But it didn't detract from what I enjoyed. It did, however, make me want to throw things at certain people for their stupidity and meddlesome ways.
Blake was such a badass! She was my favorite because of big ass mouth and badass attitude. Hayden was too sweet for her own good lol but I liked her as well. 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really liked this story! It was like...wow... I can't believe she wrote that, then...wow... I can't believe she said that, then just...WOW! I smiled through the whole book!
This book certainly has the quirkiest start to a romance novel I ever read. The dialogue is so witty and funny while at the same time chracterizing the two women so wonderfully it is almost magical.
The whole story follows those lines and even though there are some sad scenes, mostly when family history is told, over all it is a pretty amusing read, my smile sometimes change into outright laughter at the witty remarks.
Thr storyline is pretty straight forward and the outcome forseeable, but that doesn't dampen the fun reading this is. It hasn't quite made my absolute favourites list, but came close, so there are still 5 stars.
Not my kinda book! I’m so tired of reading these lesrom books featuring such unlikable characters with no chemistry. I just wanted to shake Hayden and let her know that she doesn’t need to let herself be treated like absolute garbage in order to gain a friend or girlfriend. Wow. If I’m asking myself why on earth these two characters would ever get together, then the author has failed at selling the story.
Decided not to give it five stars because I don't understand how someone who has been in love with her best friend for over 10 years can come to a conclusion that it wasn't really love in the first place, just like that. It seemed to be brushed off too quickly unfortunately especially since Hayden spent half the time talking to Ava, talking about Ava and thinking about Ava. And suddenly she's just only into Blake.
I've had a lot of fun reading this book! Yes, it is a bit predictable at times - as in: you know from the get go who is supposed to end up with whom. Nevertheless, the writing style is easy to read/understand and draws you right into the story, taking you along for the ride through the emotional rollercoaster of falling in love (while you actually and actively try everything in your power to avoid it). The main characters aren't that likeable at first glance but as you spend time with them and get to know them, it is pretty easy to fall in love with them.
Even though some books are meant to be savoured and read only a couple chapters at a time, this is not one of those. I'd argue that due to the energy of the emotions portrayed in this book, it is best to read it in one sitting (possibly during a rainy day or something).
I’m glad it was a happy ending. It was cute how they grew closer together overtime with poor Hayden so confused about her own feelings while Blake fought what she felt. The story flowed nicely making it enjoyable to read.
I thoroughly enjoyed Not My Type. Two women meet and take us on a journey of humour, emotion and taking chances and I was hooked from the very start. I would highly recommend this book.
3.8 star rating Two women whose 'player' ways goes through review the moment they meet is what this story is about. With each woman's POV, and their side kick friends, I found the whole read entertaining. The only unclear aspect was the ex issue...true on not?
I so, so, so badly want to give this book five stars. This is the second book by this author that I've read, that I've had a blast reading, that gave me feelies in my lil chest as the delightfully contrived angsty situations unfolded, with characters and relationship dynamics I totally relate to.
So why can't I give it that last star and shelve it away with all my other favourites?
It's pretty clear why.
It's the awful, terrible, no good dialogue.
Oh my God, I have never had to exercise so much patience with such cringey dialogue as I have had to try to do, in reading this author's books. There's just something so forced and inorganic about the snappiness of the banter; it makes me feel like I'm reading a high school teacher's deadass attempt to get down with the millennials by using white people colloquialisms from the early 00s.
But, like, horribly put-upon "coolness" of the characters aside? There's still a lot to like about this book, if you can slog on through.
Overall, this book is relatively lighthearted and fun. It tries to get deep at some points but honestly this book and its characters are pretty shallow, and that's fine. It's good for what it is.
The two main characters are supposed to be on the cusp of their thirties, but they nevertheless muddle through emotional growth in a manner reminiscent of college aged kids. Which was totally enjoyable for me, as someone caught somewhere between those two chapters of life. It's relatable.
Blake's femme as fuck and emotionally guarded as hell character? Super relatable. I absolutely do have friends who have swiped their way across multiple continents (me, that friend is me), much in the way that Blake finds herself trying not to be disrespectful to her random dating app hookups by thinking of Hayden while she's with them.
And Hayden's cocky lovelorn gay ass, in love with her best friend only to find out maybe she isn't as in love as she had thought after meeting Blake? Yeah, I have friends who've bed-hopped to try to distract themselves from the unattainable actual object of their happy/unhappy affections (again, me, I am that friend).
If you're a sucker for the hostile-first-meetings to begrudging-friends to lovers-who-are-prone-to-swallowing-their-true-feelings-in-an-immature-but-coincidentally-also-amusingly-dramatic-fashion trope, you'll probably have a lot of fun reading this book.
All the 5 stars are from me. I am a big sucker for happy soppy gay endings and this one is fulfilling all my criterias. Even though there are only like four or five characters, the easy flowing writing style never bores the reader. Splendid work by the author. Highly recommend to give it a read. Cheers!
This is an okay story but I couldn't connect with the characters or the drama in it. Blake works in retail and likes using an app for hook-ups. She's not looking for anything more. Hayden is also a player to distract herself from her roommate and best friend who she thinks she is in love with. When Hayden crashes and burns trying to pick up Blake she pushes to become friends. But of course it turns to more than that.
I didn't enjoy that Blake particularly saying one thing but thinking another. Blake is still hooking up with others after meeting Hayden. Not technically cheating and it was off the page but it didn't make me like her. Hayden is supposed to be a player but doesn't dome across as a smooth, confident person. The roomie deciding she might not be straight but really not talking to or considering Hayden seems poorly handled. Others may enjoy but it was a middle of the road muddle to me.
I love the story of Hayden and Blake. They loved each other but didn’t think the other felt the same. They each had baggage to overcome. Well written with a great ending. Nice love scenes.
