Magical matchmaking, family secrets, and wicked witches collide in this spellbinding cozy romantasy from mother-daughter writing duo ReGina Welling and Erin Lynn.
Some fates are harder to avoid than others.
When your family legacy comes with a body count and a curse that turned Grandma into a lawn ornament, believing you’re normal isn’t really an option.
Lexi’s badass witch ancestors were long revered as Keepers of the Balefire Flame—until a family feud pitted her mother and grandmother against one another. Their infamous magical battle didn’t just destroy each other; it turned the Balefire name into a punchline, leaving Lexi to tend the hearth alone.
The problem? Lexi’s never unlocked more than a whisper of power, one she credits for crafting unbreakable happily-ever-afters for her matchmaking clients, but it’s useless for much else. When it comes to the Balefire, her three well-meaning but troublesome faerie godmothers do all the heavy lifting.
It’s a good thing Lexi’s got a closet full of designer boots and a magical knack for creating romance out of thin air, because her own love life? A total dumpster fire. That is until she meets Kin Clark, a handsome, charismatic musician with a smile that could melt steel and realizes her secret romantic fantasy might have just come true. Kin wants nothing more than to give her the happily-ever-after she’s never truly believed a wicked Balefire witch deserved—no magic required.
Contented with Kin and her new romance, Lexi is almost willing to allow her looming Awakening deadline slip past, lose access to her magic, and let the fireplace grow cold.
But only almost.
When her former BFF turned arch-nemesis, Serena Snodgrass, starts dropping hints about buried secrets in the Balefire family saga, and a supposedly unbreakable match between clients falls apart, Lexi kicks the search for her missing legacy into high gear. As her magic stirs to life, so does trouble, and things go from zero to what-the-spell faster than you can say, “family drama.”
With the threads of her family’s past unraveling, Lexi must confront her fears, embrace her magic, and claim her birthright—or lose everything to the flames.
Because when you’re Cupid’s daughter, sometimes you don’t just weave romantic fates—you tie them into knots. And if Lexi can’t untangle them, the Balefire flame—and her future with Kin—might burn out for good.

When I was three, my mom brought home a new book and when she went to read it to me, I read it to her instead. That was when she realized I'd learned to read. Since then I couldn't even estimate the number of books I've read. It's a lot!

One of the best stories I've read in a long time!!
This story has it all - romance, humor, mystery, and story that keeps you reading until way past bedtime. The author has a real gift with words and brings her characters to life in a way that makes me want to meet them. I'm buying book 2 now!
Best if you read the psychic seasons series first.
Only draw back is errors in the kindle edition are hideous.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
I have always been a fan of underdog stories, or in this case underwitch. Lexi Balefire is a half-witch with no powers. A disgrace to her family name, luckily, she has no family left to tell her so. It's just her and her 3 fairy godmothers who will leave on her 25th birthday if Lexi can't awaken her powers. And that doesn't leave a lot of time. Plus, she's busy. She runs her own matchmaking service which isn't as easy as it looks.
She always finds a perfect match but when one of her past clients comes to her begging her to fix his relationship, she knows something is really wrong. What is going on? And why do all fingers point to Kin a very sweet and very hot guitarist?
This was a perfect blend of comedy, romance and mystery. Sue me but I love cozy mysteries and this was one I would read again any day.
Lexi Balefire has magical intuition. She's a witch (who has yet to awaken her true powers), but she certainly has match-making skills that are just... well, magical. Plus, she has 4 faerie godmothers, so they certainly help her along in life.
Note to the discerning reader: There are mild swear words used throughout the story. Also, there are some “mature” scenes (but it's not sleazy).
Awesome read with awesome characters and storyline. A witch who hadn’t really developed into being the head witch and was working as matchmaking service. Who had a strange way “matching” up. So much more awesomeness to be read so this is a definite must read!!
Even with a Fairy Godmother nothing is ever easy and Alexis Balefire is on the edge of a major meltdown. This book was funny and told a great story. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
Lexi Balefire has her own business as a matchmaker. She is also the protector of the ritual flame. At least she will be when she comes into her powers. And at the age of 24, she learns that she may not have much time left.
She was orphaned as an infant and was raised by her three faerie godmothers.
This was a fun story with developed characters and a solid plotline. This story had no murders in it either.
I wasn't sure about the story when I started it. After a couple of chapters it started to grow on me and I wound up enjoying it as a whole.
The idea was pretty good, but the story didn't gel for me. I think it needed a bit more editing and polishing and a lot more action. The writing did not flow very smoothly and it felt like we started in the middle of the story with a whole lot of history just casually tossed in, then missed chunks as it jumped scenes. It felt disjointed and more like an outline of the story that lacked the depth needed to bring it to life. The biggest amount of detail seemed to be spent on planning a wedding that wasn't even the MC's. Plus quite a few errors. I didn't particularly care for the characters, which makes it hard for me to care about the story. Then answers/solutions to most of their problems just appeared when needed (like magic!). There just didn't seem to be much of a struggle, conflict or journey and the emotional responses seemed either overdramatic or nonexistent. It did leave us with some unresolved mysteries and villains to keep the series going, mostly concerning Lexi's family.
So it's okay, but I don't think I'll be interested in the rest of the series.
What does this witchy book have that others don't? Well it isn't a witch who is the last of her line but doesn't have her powers, although that is true of Lexi. That has happened before in many books. It isn't a witch who can help others find true love but can not keep a boyfriend, although that is true of Lexi. That also has happened before in many books. It isn't a non-helpful familiar, or not remembering her mother, or not having another witch to teach her...been there done that in many books. However what makes this book incredibly special is the fact that Lexi has not one but four fairie godmothers. Smoking hot supermodel godmothers that as fairies can work an unbelievable amount of magic. They have raised Lexi since she was young, and each year when she tries to awaken her magical powers, they support her and cheer her on. Only Lexi finds out that this is the last year she can dream about finding her powers. If it doesn't happen by her birthday, it will never happen and magic will pass her by.
Surprisingly, Lexi runs a matchmaking service and can tell when true love matches are made. Her best friend, Flix is half human and half fairie. No one else knows about Lexie except other witches. It is by happenstance that Lexi meets Kin, a new neighbor, and actually dates him instead of turning him away. But just when that is looking up, all sorts of other problems laced with evil are dumped in her lap.
I loved the fairies-their powers, their antics, their descriptions, it was an added dimension to the witch story that made it more special and exciting than other books I have read. I recommend this to anyone who has read other popular witch books and challenge you not to find it one of the best!I am thrilled to note there is one other book already published in the series and a third one coming out in a few months. This is a series that is likely to get better and better!
This one had a fun premise—witches, faeries, a bit of romance, a town called Salem—but the execution didn’t quite stick the landing. It felt like I’d been dropped into the middle of an ongoing story without context, and instead of catching me up, it threw out random chunks of history like I should already care. The pacing was all over the place, and the writing lacked the polish needed to make the world come alive. Weirdly, a large chunk of the plot centered around a wedding that wasn’t even Lexi’s, and the actual magical elements—which should’ve been the star—felt like afterthoughts. The most action we got was sprinkled in awkward bursts between clunky transitions and disjointed scenes.
Lexi, the main character, didn’t help matters. At 25, she read more like a whiny teen, sulking over every interaction and diving into insta-romance with barely any chemistry. When she revealed her magical abilities to the new guy in town and he (reasonably) freaked out, she took it way too personally—even though he came back the next morning like a decent human. The romance was undercooked and didn’t match the level of drama that followed. Most side characters were forgettable set pieces, including a cartoonish bully straight out of a high school drama. The faeries were the only spark in the story—chaotic, magical, and at least mildly entertaining, even if they did feel like Disney had a hand in their creation. In the end, everything wrapped up too neatly, with answers magically appearing on cue and very little real struggle. There were some threads left dangling to tease future books, but honestly, I wasn’t enchanted enough to stick around.
Lexi is the last in a long and storied line of witches, the Balefire witches, whose job it is to keep the Balefire burning so that once a year, other witches can use the flame to light their Beltane fires. Unfortunately for Lexi, she has yet to Awaken to her own magical abilities, and at the age of 24, time is running out. If she doesn't Awaken by her 25th birthday, the Balefire will become the responsibility of the next closest witch, who just so happens to be Lexi's nemesis, Serena Snodgrass.
Lexi keeps busy running a successful matchmaking business. While she may not be able to cast spells, she can certainly sense where someone's fated soul mate is, and she brings couples together using that talent. Her home life is dominated by not one, but four faerie godmothers, who swooped in to raise Lexi when her mother was killed by her grandmother, who then turned to stone. For that reason, Lexi has had no other witch to rely on to teach her how to Awaken her powers. A chance encounter with another witch sets her on the right path, but will she be able to tap into her powers in time for Beltane?
Lexi is distracted by a charming and handsome musician who has moved into her neighborhood, and she is vexed by one of her matched couples, who seem to be encountering some pitfalls on their way to the altar. Her life would be much easier, if only she could access her magic.
Delightful story! I thoroughly enjoyed the faerie godmothers and their constant rows with one another. Lexi's familiar, Salem, was wonderful, as was her BFF, half-faerie Flix. Kin made for a yummy love interest, and Serena was a properly wicked witch and a perfect foil for Lexi.
This is a fun story. Lexi owns a matchmaking business but is single herself..its not that shes ugly, but living with 4 faerie godmothers doesnt help...especially when they are sisters and real faeries !! Each sister has their own magic elements. Lexi was handed down a family gift and is the witches " keeper of the ritual flame" in her fireplace. She must tend to by feeding it magic because if the fire went out..oh boy bad things would happen. Only problem is that she has no magic...sure she has dabbeld with a few spells that turned out with disasterous results. With most witches, they get their powers at age 14, but not Lexi lol. Her 25 th birthday is getting closer and its her last chance to "find" her powers or she looses the honor of keeping the flame! I really like her character because she doesnt give up. She tries extra hard at everything she does. She has a cat named Satan, a business partner named Flix and a sexy new neighbor named Kin. Even though the characters dont always get along, this storyline really works. This is the first book in a series and I really cant wait to see what happens next..lots of secrets come out towards the end of the book and possibly a new love for Lexi...maybe????
I thought this book was cute, not my usual style but still good. I got this book for free from Barnes & Nobles nook book Free Friday's event. I haven't read a good book about witches in a while so I figured I would give this a shot. If you don't want the ending spoiled, quit reading NOW! Anyway, the book was good and I may continue the series to see if my theory has any merit and to get some of my questions answered.
This was great and I think it did exactly what the author was hoping it would do. Giving me all the fun Sabrina vibes, I loved this small town witch story where Lexi was told she was supposed to have all this great power and she comes up with just enough to open up a match making company. Her fairy aunts made things all the more chaotic and quirky to add to the sitcom feel this book definitely gave. The fun twist on her powers and the role Salem played in this really provided for a great story that almost felt nostalgic at times with how much it reminded of the different witch stories and shows I encounter growing up. Her role as a match matched was a great way to see how she used her powers on a day to day basis to keep living up her family’s calling while adapting it to what she’s able to do herself. Overall, happy I finally got around to this after so many years of it sitting on my tbr and will definitely continue at some point.
Cover/title: Although the cover here is fine, the cover on my copy is adorable with the witch sitting on top of the house. The title is what really drew me in. It is just a fun title.
Characters: There are so many fun characters in this book, I doubt that I could pick a favorite. I love the fairy godmothers. Their antics make me smile. Salem is another fun and quirky character.
Plot: I love the story line. There is a lot happening in this book including a few surprising twists. I won't say anything else because I don't want to spoil it for future readers of this book.
Overall: This is a fun and quirky book. I loved so many things about it. The characters, the fun title/cover and the overall story. I will definitely be reading more by this author.
How does it feel to come from a long line of powerful witches and not be able to cast anything? Alexis, Lexi, Balefire can tell you that it's no picnic. She's skilled enough to know when two people are destined to be together and her matchmaking service grew from this ability. Lexi tries to enjoy her success and not dwell on her multiple failed attempts to awaken her magical abilities but it's difficult to do when her faery godmothers keep secrets from her. These secrets could change her life as well as the fate of their society since her line is responsible for keeping the fire burning that others collect and use during Beltane. This was a fun, quick read and I look forward to seeing what else Lexi will find herself mixed up in.
Seriously, there were many things that I liked about this story, but there were quite a few that drew upon a raw nerve. I liked the characters, especially Lexi and her fairy god mothers but I did not like the number of times that I had to back track, thinking that I had inadvertently missed a page especially when a chapter ended on a cliff hanger and the next started on an entirely different note. There were times when the Lexi's handling of her involvement with Kin seem to be totally out of character. The ending partially made up for the disappointments, partially, because there still quite a few in answered questions at the end. Needs patience but readable.
Everyone is a sketch. There are too many of them to focus on. Harry and Lemon aren't necessary and distract from Mona. Flix is not needed, him and Salem could have been the same character. I like the world and the major reveals, but the plot was all over the place. It needed to be streamlined with the the four godmothers already caterers and event planners. The best friend spot needed to be the cat or the fairy with the cat staying a cat. In fact, the fact that Salem morphs is just distracting and adds nothing to the story. Mental communications or physically talking could have done the same thing without the whole naked debacle. If your MC isn't attracted then the naked is there for no reason.
Cute. The first couple of pages I felt annoyed, because the descriptions felt way overly wordy and some editing was left to be desired. That being said, the story was super cute, up beat, and fun. I needed a break from all the non fiction and serious stories and wanted something peppy. This fit the bill. The characters were fun and relatable making the plot more believable. I found myself wanting to keep reading to see how it ends, which is a sign to me that I’m liking what I’m reading. While I’m normally really good at figuring out the plots in books and movies early on, this one gave me a couple of pleasant surprises. Sometimes, girls just need some light reading to perk them up and this one fit the bill for me. I’m interested in reading the next book in the series.
An interesting fantasy/paranormal witch story with characters that have potential, but need a bit more depth. I had a hard time getting into the story as it hopped around a bit, but that has happened with other books and I have gone on to really like the series. I will read the next book in the series to see if it grabs me, but I am hoping the plot has a bit more meat on the bones than this one did. This was like an introduction to a cast of characters with an outline of how they came to be a connected group, but more depth of character and consistency of character will be welcome in future books.
Lexi Balefire. A witch with no powers that is in charge of keeping the Balefire lit. Only one of the most important jobs she could have.
The problem? If she doesn't get her magic by the time she turns twenty-five, the window closes for her forever. Add to it the fact that she was raised by three elemental fairies, her grandmother is a stone ornament on the lawn, and her mother is dead. The key to unlocking her magic is supposed to be passed through the family tree and now Lexi has no family to rely on.
Oh, and add the fact that her father is no mere mortal. The fate of the world may just rest in her hands.
At times there’s a need for a light hearted, fun story. A Match Made in Spell fills this need. Don’t take it too seriously, read with a sense of humor and you will have spent a relaxing bit of time with this book. It is the first in a series of six books under the ‘Fate Weaver’ heading.
A bit more background would have been fun but the missing info is not a deal breaker. I feel the pieces will fall into place as the series unfolds. After reading this introductory story I’ve purchased the set of books.
This was a free book offer that I’m glad I took a chance on and I’m happy to report that there were no editing issues.
The characters, apart from Salem (but only later on) weren't that interesting or well-rounded. I get that there had to be four fairy godmothers because of the elements, but it meant (relatively) a lot of characters that I still don't know a lot about and any descriptions were physical and often repeated.
I also missed excitement and some serious conflict. To be honest, I was a bit bored. I decided to pick it up and finish it anyway, after leaving it for a few months, and it picked up the excitement a little, but not enough to really keep me on the edge of my seat. It wasn't horrible. Everything was just meh. And there are better books out there so I don't recommend it.
This was a surprising book. I expected a bit of paranormal activity but it is woven in so neatly that fairie godmothers seem quite normal. The story starts out with Lexi knowing she is a witch but she hasn’t come into her powers yet and despairs of ever attaining them. She is the last of the Balefire line and she knows the keeping of the balefire will pass to a different line if her powers don’t awaken. This story is entertaining and fun and keeps you reading to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This is a cute and quick read for getting into the fall spirit. Or Valentine's day...
My favorite aspect of the book are the fairy characters, they are unique and entertaining with their shenanigans and steal the show a bit!
The book read smoothly except for one glaring typo and some really corny character names. I wish the book would have not briefly mentioned events like the escape from Hell or archangels with no further development. Either delve into the topic (or give Vaeta her own book, she is so interesting!) - but to mention such things in passing kills my inner fantasy geek! Throwing more creatures into the mix that didn't advance the story threw me off.
A little romance, a little fantasy and fairy tale, a little mystery and a lot of magic... This book had some of everything. A nice light read that went a little over the top at times and earned itself three stars!
I normally read cozy mysteries which have a murder or some other crime in the first few chapters. I expected the same in this book. It is nothing like that. When I started reading about witches with fairy godmothers, I considered not even finishing. Blame it on the writing or the interesting storyline, but I read it all and loved every bit! I began to wonder how much of it could be real and how much is just from the authors thinking!? I would say read it, enjoy it. It's fun!
The story started to get interesting at 60% I had a problem to warm up with the main character. But also missed some description how the people look like. A bit more details would have been handy. The monologues were ok also could have been more conversations between characters. The funniest part was Salem the cat, jolly character. Could have been with more action regarding to magic. But for free it was ok, don't think I will go Goethe next one. Sorry if I have left not such a good review.
