Lake Lanier holds the secrets of “time” beneath its surface and for one family who has become its protectors and stewards, it is their own lifeline to the past. For confirmed single girl Piper Taylor and the handsome Nick Cramer, a brutal storm on a dark night makes the perfect, if unusual backdrop for attraction, past regrets, and determination.

Nick knows he has found a special someone in Piper, but in his past is a woman he let down and she died, a brutal and terrifying death. Knowing the magic of Lake Lanier, Nick braves the depths to return to the year 2001, just before the horrors of 9/11. Will Nick try to change history to assuage his guilt? He must be stopped and Piper has volunteered to travel back, but this time, her journey will be through an untried machine that could leave her lost in time or worse.

Can Piper stop Nick from destroying the fabric of time, changing history and altering the future? BEYOND THE MIST by Casi McLean takes us back to the nightmare of the 9/11 attacks, the brutality of innocent lives lost and a race against time itself as Piper risks everything, including her heart to bring Nick home before he alters time.

The idea of time travel, of being able to go back and undo past mistakes is something we have all thought about in one way or another. But we have all realized that one tiny change risks the butterfly effect.

Casi McLean’s tale is romantic, intriguing and her characters are endearing. Some we have met before, but one can see they are the heart and soul of a magical tale that is almost timeless! Fabulous writing and an opportunity to imagine what you would do, what you would risk to fix the past, or if you are strong enough to leave history as it stands.

I received this copy from Casi McLean!

Beyond the Mist is dedicated to the victims of the September 11, 21 terrorist attack on United States soil and was written with author Casi McLean’s deepest respect and compassion for their families and friends. That being said, this tale is an exciting fictional prospective of the possibilities of time travel and bad decisions made for the right reasons.
Beyond the Mist returns to a tiny hamlet nestled in the north Georgia Mountains and the eerie Lake Lanier. Is it cursed or is something else going on here? A prototype time machine perhaps taking advantage of a seismic shift creating a portal though time in Lake Lanier? Unauthorized use can cause unbelievable consequences to the timeline for those involved and those not.
Nick Cramer blames himself for the death of former girlfriend, Carly Patterson, if only he could go back in time to right his perceived wrong. Piper Taylor is willing to risk her life to save Nick from himself and the disastrous results of his actions during his time-slip to 2001. Can they correct results of Nick’s well-meaning actions in time to set the timeline on the right path? Will Nick realize that Piper is may well be his destiny?
The events swirl around the days leading up to and during September 11, 2001. The actions of the character’s will keep you enthralled until the very last page.
I loved this book! An exciting, unique tale of time travel adventure with second chances at true love. Twists and turns in Beyond the Mist will keep you flipping pages until the end when you close the book and wonder what's next in the world beyond the mist."

**Review on https://smadasbooksmack.blogspot.com/ **
Can saving the life of a single person alter the future so dramatically? That is the question that Beyond the Mist asks- can a man desperate to escape the trauma of his past cause irrevocable changes to the future of his friends by saving the life of a woman from his past- a woman who has more secrets than Nick knows? And the girl who loves him in the present will do whatever she can do to bring him home alive without damaging the world further.

Book 2 literally picks up where book 1 ends, with Lacey recuperating in the hospital after getting back from her time travel jaunt and 3 day coma and all her friends and family coming to terms with what really happened- and that time travel is for realsies. I highly recommend that you read the first book in the series Beneath the Lake before Beyond the Mist because you will be 100% lost without.

I was really confused as to Nick's motivation- he meets Piper and feels an intense overwhelming connection to her thinking she might be his soulmate which in turn spurs him to go back to 2001 and save his girlfriend Carly from dying during the terrorist attack at the World Trade Center (how would saving your old pregnant girlfriend mean you get to be together with your soulmate?). And on top of that, he feels obligated to Lacey and Rob- so he takes advantage of his friends kindness and money to go back in time for his own selfish reasons and alter the past for his own gain, which in turn may hurt the future. Yeah, I don't understand him at all (I am not Team Nick, in case you didn't pick that up). I liked the idea of him going back in time (...and maybe elsewhere in time...) and all the drama around the terrorist attack, but I am not getting Nick as a person- he is suppose to be smart, yet he continually makes strange errors and I wanted to shake him.

I will say that Piper is such a kind competent person, with a big heart and a moral compass that always points true. Hands down, she was my favorite character in the story and I am so glad that she got the chance to have a chance to be a main character and have her story told. I hope there is more to come and that she will be a part of it.

The love that Piper and Nick experience for each other is intense and easily transmitted though the pages- the reader can feel the bond the two formed from the short time they were together. While there was a lot of mystery, science fiction, and danger that made up the plot of the book, the underlying core of the story is the romance and connection between Piper and Nick.

The narrator did a good job of creating voices and distinct character for each person in the story. She enunciated clearly and I was able to lose myself in her reading. I will admit that I have gotten in the habit of listening to my audiobooks not at normal speed and I listened to this one at 1.5x the speed (maybe I would not have not enjoyed the audiobook at a slower narration speed?). I would listen to Amy bring more stories to life in the future.

Beyond the Mist was full of action, time travel, and tons of twists. I found that I actually liked this story more than the first book just since it kept me guessing and on my toes. I am interested to see what will happen next in this time travel world. Each book adds more character to get invested in and I am curious to see who will show next.

I am voluntarily reviewing a complimentary copy of this book.

(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

Casi McLean touched on many emotions in Beyond the Mist: guilt, love, regret, anger, remorse, and fear. She had us step into the past, relive the horrific moments of 9/11, and feel the desperation to alter a moment in time. If given the opportunity, I can’t imagine many who would not want to tweak those course of events.. despite the unknown changes that might occur in the future. To save a love one. To save everyone. It is so tempting. Nick faced such a temptation and we discovered, with him, how one small change ripples.. tears….. causes more harm than good.

After the horrific carnage unfolded around them, Nick and Piper had no option but to head back to their time. The past had to stay the past. Instead of an easy journey back to their timeline, these two destined loves got thrust (painfully) into the future. Again, Casi tapped into two prominent emotions felt throughout this suspenseful tale: fear and love. Nick and Piper feared never going home. Never being together again. But, as you had guessed, love finds a way. They found each other. They found home. But the surprises and twists don’t end then and there. They are not the only two who found a HEA. Plus, she ended the story with one heckuva setup for the next Lake Lanier Mysteries.

Wow! I really enjoyed this book. This is the first book I've read by Casi McLean, but I'm looking forward to reading more books by her. From the beginning of the story with the opening paragraph, I was drawn into the story. It is a story of time-travel, but not in the typical way, no in this book it's traveling to the future and back rather than the past. Piper Taylor the main character has decided there's no one out there that she can fall in love with, that is until a violent storm literally hurls her into Nick Carter's arms. He too is getting over a bad relationship and still feeling the pain caused by it (once bitten twice shy), yet can't resist the chemistry he feels towards Piper. But can they fight and survive against the enemies they encounter when they go through a rip a time? Of course, there is a mystery involved too. This is book #2 of the series, so now I want to read book #1 to learn more about what happened before this book began with these characters.

Review of Beyond the Mist by Casi McLean
Warning: This book might traumatize you from true past events. I feel quite stressed as I write this.
This is without doubt the darkest time travel novel I have ever read. It is also the most complex with the future or the past constantly changing with upsetting results.
But that being said, I never stopped reading. The story is well written and has a real message for the world to take heed. Our current situation is very close to self-annihilation. And unlike the story, we have no ability to undo any disasters in our future once they occur.
You probably shouldn’t read this late at night. I probably won’t get a bit of sleep tonight. However, it is absolutely worth reading…just don’t expect it to be fun. But I do expect you’ll keep reading.

What A Ride!

Beyond the Mist is #02 in the Lake Lanier Mysteries Series by Casi McLean.

Amy Deuchler narrates.

HEA with No cliffhangers! (+ Bonus, see review for more details!)

I HIGHLY suggest reading them in order to get the best experience. These are too connected.

Length: 8 hours 10 minutes

Content Advisory:
There is mild sexplay.
This involves the events of 9/11 up close and personal, and may be upsetting to some.

This story picks up right at the ending of the first. I really hope you've read or listened to the first one, because you won't be lost so much as behind. You are thrust into the thick of things really quickly and the ride never stops or pauses. It's great, but more meaningful to those that are up to speed already. And to those that think they know whats going on because of past experience, I say to you, that was only the ground work and you will still have so much to learn.

Nick Cramer and Piper Taylor shared charged moments together on the night of the big storm that was at the center of book one. They have an undeniable chemistry despite their shared opinions on falling in love. They are mystically drawn to one another, even through time.

Nick ❤ Piper

Nick gets caught up in his past to the point he jeopardizes his future, and everyone else's as well. I really wish I could say more because this is so good, but it would be easy to spoil something. It is an intense roller coaster ride that had my stomach in my throat in anticipation of the outcome. It ended a bit too fast, but the little nugget left in the last few words says there is a method to that madness.

Casi McLean is an author I can count on to take me on a fun but untimaely loving ride! I look forward to next one.

Amy Deuchler was excellent with all character types. Her performance alowd me to get lost in the adventure!.

Normal speed was fine.

Nick finds out about the whole situation that happens that causes Lacey to o back to 1949. He takes the opportunity to do the same thing so that he can save somebody who died during 9/11. Once everybody finds out what happened, they are determined to keep him from messing up the time space continuum. Piper volunteers to go find him and keep him from changing everything they know due to events he's trying to change.

While I didn't really enjoy this book as much as I did the first, I really enjoyed it very much. I feel like there was more build up in the first book that wasn't seen here. It could be the fact that the time travel aspect had yet to be discovered. I really loved the raw emotion that the author put into writing about the tragedy of 9/11. I felt like I was actually THERE. I mean, I remember the news broadcasts in school, but it's another thing completely to feel like you were actually near everything as it took place.

The characters were just as intense as they were in the first. It was nice getting to know Piper a bit more in this book. She wasn't really a focal point in the first book. She was more referenced than anything. At first, I thought Piper was kind of a Peach from You. I was wrong there. She's has an incredibly beautiful soul. I was hoping to see more of Lacey in this one, but I get it. This was not her story. Just like the first book was not Piper's.

The book was narrated by Amy Deuchler. The first book was narrated by Andrea Mitchell. They both did such fantastic jobs. I think it's wise to have two different people narrating a series if the points of view change. I loved Amy's portrayal of all of the characters. I also loved her portrayal of the events of 9/11 as they unfolded in the story. I wouldn't blame her if she had to pause now and then to gain control of her emotions.

I really did enjoy this story very much. I think I expected more with how jam packed with emotions and story that the first one was. Other than that, I didn't really have a problem with the story. I was hoping that certain points of the book would be expanded upon just a little more. There was a part of the story I'd of liked a conclusion on as well. I still recommend it and the first book.

Sci-fi Time Traveling Mystery Romance . . . Piper and Nick have that chance meeting that sends them both a jolt of realization. This journey for the two of them starts off well in good in the present time but slips to the past with good intentions and not so good possible outcomes. Nick had once loved and lost and still held on to those tragic results. He now have another chance at love and finds that he wants to amend the past with the present. Not quite seeing straight or fully grasping the consequences of his decision. He goes head first in to the waters of Lake Lanier and slips further Beyond the Mist.

There was much here. The writing was good. The characters were rich and flawed. The imagery was vivid. The heavy subject of 9/11 and the events that took place on that day will forever be a subject that needs to be handled in the right way when approaching it. There will always be someone that finds offense in the events of that day. There will be those that want very much to change that day, but we have to understand it was the past and even the simplest change to that day could have ramifications that could make things a 100x worse. I found that the way in which Casi approached the events was constructed well. She gave a different view. She showed that events of the world happen and it could have a lasting effect on you but its you that makes the choice to move forward with you life. Going back and changing those events could in fact change everything that followed.

I enjoyed watching how Piper and Nick navigated the events of their present and then once they slip in to the past. There was suspense, action, drama, and intensity. But most of all they had each other and the love they were building with each other.

Narrator Amy Deuchler did justice to this piece. She had the diction, clarity, and pacing down. The audio ran smooth. I could detect no lengthy pauses, gaps and no hiccups. I enjoyed it more after the feel the narrator out phase and was able to kick up the speed. This provided me with more like a picture playing in my head.

Most Of Us Would Love To Change The Past If We Could…

How many of us have thought about returning to the past, and changing events which ended up mucking up our future? And if you could erase an infamous event, would you? This story isn’t only an incredibly romantic, well written and engaging romance, but focuses on the repercussions of attempting to change the past.

Piper Taylor and Nick Cramer meet during a raging storm and are mutually attracted. Stepping into the past and reliving the horrific moments of 9/11, Nick wants to alter events he regrets before making a commitment to Piper. He takes a ride back in time without the permission of the inventor of the time machine, and in doing so, screws up the future.

The inventor of the time machine sends Piper back to the past before Nick lands so she can attempt to repair the potential damage and bring him home.

But where would a suspenseful story lead without complications? There are plenty of twists and turns to keep things interesting. despite the unknown changes that might occur in the future. To save a loved one and to save everyone, Nick is tempted and in trying to alter events, discovers that one small change causes more harm than good.

Will Nick and Piper change history, and will love triumph?

This is an HEA romance with no cliffhangers and is the second in the series. I had no trouble following the sequence of events even though I haven’t read book 1, Beneath the Lake. The story has an intriguing ending, that will definitely make you want to read the next in the series, but I would also recommend reading Beneath the Lake first, so you have a better understanding about what is happening throughout Beyond the Mist.

I give it 5 stars!!

I thought this is a simple time-travel paranormal story but it goes into science fiction with the creation of a time-travel machine.

I wasn't sure what to expect of the story. The romance between Nick and Piper were almost secondary. The main focus is the effect of time-travelling and how it affects the world. Its an interesting aspect to focus the story on 9/11.

My main gripe would be the author assumes the readers knowledge of the previous book and explains the sci-fi/paranormal part too quickly that it might confuse new readers.

Plot: 4/5
Characterisation: 3/5
Prose: 3/5
How much I enjoyed it: 4/5

This is book two in the Lake Lanier Mysteries series.

A secret portal hidden in Atlanta’s Lake Lanier has Nick tempting fate and goes back in years. Can he change the future?

I really liked Piper and Nicks story. It’s not an easy read, not one of those I could blitz through but I thought it was a great read.

Beyond the Mist is a time travel novel. Not my usual kinda read but I enjoyed it anyway.

The Story:

Beyond the Mist picks up after Beneath the Lake and focuses more on Piper and Nick. In this story line Nick has a hidden agenda and uses the device that the Reynolds have created to manipulate the time rift to go back to 2001, he believes he can save his then girlfriend from the 9/11 attacks that devistated New York and the world alike.

Piper goes back to stop Nick from changing the course of history for the worst after they realise where he has gone back to and that he has infact done something to alter the timeline. There is a lot going on in this book. can Piper reach him in time to stop him from bringing disator to the future for Lacy and Rob? This story features around the 9/11 and it was harrowing read, and knowing what we know now would we want to go back in time to try and stop it happening? A great time travel book that leaves us with a little bit of a cliffhanger (but not a huge one)

The Narration:

Amy Deuchler did a great job of bringing this story to life, she switched perfectly between the male and female characters. The production was crisp and clear with no long pauses, background noise or static.

Overall this was once again a great 4 star listen.

Nick Cramer has always blamed himself for his girlfriend dying in the 9/11 attacks. Now he has a chance of going back in time and saving her. He has been told it's wrong to tamper with the time line, so he will go in secret.
Piper Taylor has been at her best friend's hospital bedside for a week while she has been unconscious. Now she knows her friend is recovering, it's time to find Nick.
You have to concentrate when your reading this because our characters are messing about with time and causing all sorts of chaos. Our hero is a good man with his heart in the right place but is rather impetuous. Our brave heroine will go through hell to make things right for everyone. I can't really tell you more about it without disrupting the space-time continuum.
This is the second book in the series. I haven't read the first, but still understood what was happening. I think I would have liked to read the other first because this one has spoilers for it. There is a little teaser at the end for book three and I can't wait to read it.

This is my first book by Casi McLean even though it is the 2nd book in the Lake Lanier Mysteries Series. I will be checking out book one very soon. This can be read as a stand alone, but you do have to really pay attention at first until you get used to which time line each person is from. For instance Nick's father was born in 1921, his mother in 1983, they bump into Nick when he is 30 years old. I do want book one to get more of a the back story though, some things would make a lot more sense. Casi has done a really good job with this book. It is a Time Travel Novel. Casi has brought September 11, 2001 back to our memories. She is very respectful to the victims of 9/11

Nick Cramer has always blamed himself for his girlfriend Carlie dying in the 9/11 attacks. Then he finds a way to travel back in time to save Carlie. Their is secret portal hidden beneath Atlanta’s Lake Lanier. Nick knows he should not mess with the time line of events in the past or the future but with a big heart and also a broken heart he still wants to save Carlie.

Nick meets Piper Taylor and knows there is something special between them, but his guilt over Carlie urges him on.

Piper must avoid the terrorism in 2001, find Nick, and get them back to their correct time before before Nick makes any changes that will put a rip in time and they become lost in time forever.

I love the premise of this series--weaving time travel in with romance and suspense--and am all about a good set of secondary characters, but neither element worked as well in this installment as they did in the first. I found myself stopping and starting frequently, and I likely would've put the book down for good if I hadn't been intending to review it.

Book 1 (Beneath the Lake) was a bit of a slow starter for me, but Lacey and Bobby grew on me and I ended up quite enjoying the book. Beyond the Mist is also a slow-starter... but never grew on me the same way the first did. This book picks up where book 1 left off, but with a new focus couple: Piper and Nick. I liked them just *fine* as a couple, but I also didn't feel like I got to know them well enough to truly cheer for them.

McLean spends a lot of time rehashing past events... sort of through Piper or Nick's memories(?). We switch tenses and times quite frequently, and there are some strange word choices and hard-to-follow descriptions and dialogue. The 2001-New-York-City-terrorist-attacks-incoming setting also didn't connect as well for me as the trip back in time to 1950s Georgia.

Overall, Beyond the Mist just doesn't feel quite as well written as Beneath the Lake, or perhaps the story didn't resonate with me as much, so I noticed the writing more. The overall vibe of this book is definitely different, too. Unfortunately, I won't be continuing this series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed a review copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Right from the first page, I realized that reading the first in the Lake Lanier Mysteries (Beneath the Lake) would have been a good idea. However, while Beyond the Mist is a continuation of Book 1, you can still enjoy Book 2 on its own, once you acclimate yourself to the setting, characters, and circumstances.

Time travel is always an intriguing subject, but Casi McLean puts a unique spin on it. Beyond the Mist is filled with romance across time, a portal beneath a lake shrouded in mystery, and the opportunity to change the past.

But as in many books about time travel, the ripple effect of changing the past rears its unpredictable head. While the romance between Nick and Piper sweetens the deal, the overall story is dark, confusing, complex, and maybe even depressing. So many of us would love the chance to change the events on September 11, 2001 or any dark time in history. But as you will find in Beyond the Mist, slipping through that rip in time can create more consequences and mystery than what is expected, causing even more chaos and problems.

For me, at least, perhaps the real question isn’t how can we go backward in time to change the past, but how can we stop those ugly events from happening in the first place?

Audiobook review

CW: this book is centered around the events of 911. If this is a topic that you are sensitive to, I do not recommend this book.

Beyond the Mist: Lake Lanier Mysteries main premise is time travel. A mysterious lake that opens a portal to other times has pulled in a victim. Finding out about time travel, Nick figured out a way to go back to the week before 9/11 to try to save his then-girlfriend. Unfortunately, Nick will inevitably trigger the Butterfly Effect by changing the timeline, so the scientists send Piper, his current time sudden love interest, to being him back and make sure he doesn’t change anything.

This is book 2 of the series and I unfortunately didn’t read book 1, so I had to listen to the first 2 chapters a few times before I understood what was possibly going on. This is sort of how I spent a lot of the book and I’m not sure if it was the writing or that I just kept losing interest.

Narrator Amy Deuchler did a great job. I’ve listened to a few of the books she’s read and I’ve never been dissatisfied with her style. Her voice is rich and chromatic.

I received this book from the author, narrator, or publisher in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Beyond the Mist written by Casi McLean and narrated by Amy Deuchler is the second in the Lake Lanier Mysteries series and the first audiobook I have listened to from this author

The first 2 chapters nearly stopped me from listening to this audiobook. Not that it was not technically on point, but it was not to my taste. That does not mean it was not good, there was just something in the cadence and enunciation that made me think it was AI. Bear with me on this as if you listen through past the first two chapters, the narrator settles into the different roles and flows and the performance is excellent. I don't know if it is a technical blip, but it may be worth revisiting it. No matter what though, it is not indicative of the audiobook production as a whole which is outstanding

Beyond the Mist is written at a great pace; full of action, it enhanced the central theme of time travel and the listener is kept rapt with a whole lot of plot twists. The writing has hooked me in and I am looking forward to see what happens next. It is also a great advertisement for the first book

Thank you to StoryOrigin, Casi McLean and Amy Deuchler for this fantastic ALC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own

This is the story of Piper Taylor who thought she would never find love until she met up with Nick Cramer.
Lake Lanier is a mystery, Pipers best friend Lacey was saved from the icy lake but her story was a different thing. Going through the lake and back in time and meeting up with Rob Reynolds. Now married and a son who is older than they are and married to a woman who has found out how to work the lake to their advantage but could be dangerous.
While Lacey was in hospital, Nick and Piper became very close, but Nick has a hidden agenda and a past that he can’t run from. He takes the device and goes through the lake back to 2001, September 7th to save the woman he has felt guilt about all this time and who died in the 911 tragedy.
Because of Pipers love for Nick, she goes after him to bring him back home before he changes the future for good.
This was a great story by Casi McLean, I do like time travel stories and this one peaked my interest as it was only going back a few years to a time well known in history, and discovering the espionage.
Can’t wait to see what is the next instalment in the Lake Lanier Mysteries.

The second book in the Lake Lanier Mysteries series. This book carries on the story of the mysterious Lake Lanier and the secrets that it holds beneath the water.
This book looks at Piper, she is Laceys best friend and we met her and the other residents around the lake in the first book. Piper didn't believe in love until she fell for Nick Cramer, the only problem was he could not move on because of the guilt he felt for the death of his then-girlfriend Carly. She had died in the 9/11 Twin Tower attack, they had argued and she left his bedroom to stay at the Marriott the night before the attack. He traveled back through time to try and save her. While in 2001 Nick brought about some changes to the present and Piper had to step up to help stop the butterfly effect of having Nick in the past, she had to get him home.
The way Casi Mclean writes is thrilling and she pulls you into her world from the very first page and keeps you there till the end. Her attention to detail brings the characters to life and keeps the reader engaged and rooting for them.
A great book and now I'm ready for book 3.

Beyond the Mist is book 2 in the Lake Lanier Mystery series. It did not disappoint. I was drawn in by the first chapter. It starts where Beneath the Lake ended. Piper and Nick pick up in this story. I loved all the characters. They work so well together. I found myself feeling upset, shocked and then finally happiness.

Sandy has a time machine in her basement. It's connected to the portal at the bottom of Lake Lanier. Nick goes missing. Piper is on a mission to find nick, even if it means going back in time. Several people come together to figure out how to get Piper to the past where Nick is. September 11, 2001, to be exact. The year of the collapse of the twin towers in New York City. Piper has to get to Nick before he corrects the past and changes the future. Will they be able to get her to the past? Will Piper and Nick come home safe and sound?

Casi McLean has done it again. Beyond the Mist has mystery, romance, twists and turns that I didnt see coming. I love how September 11, 2001 was involved in the book. It puts in in a whole new perspective. I highly recommend this book. I loved it.

Beyond the Mist

By Casi McLean

This is the second in the Lake Lanier Mysteries. It is now about Nick and Piper. Nick thinks that he can save his old girlfriend Carly from the devastation that was 911. Piper volunteers to go after Nick after he used Sandy’s time machine. When he ended up just before the twin towers would have been destroyed, he messes up the whole timeline. Which means that since he was no longer in their timeline Lacey dies in the lake. The whole wild ride gives the reader chills and wishing they too could go back in time to fix something or to save someone. The end leaves a cliffhanger that gives the reader some hope in there being another story.

I really enjoyed this book. At first, it was kind of hard to get into but once it got going it flew by. I love a good story that will give not only give you a good feeling and an HEA. I think this book deserves at least a 4.5 but they don’t let you give out that score so I will give it 5 out of 5 stars. I really really hope that there will be more in this series. I NEED to KNOW!!!!

Beyond The Mist was amazing, intense and really rugged at my heart strings. It was easy to read and sucked me into the story from the very first page. This was Nick and Pipers story. This had to a difficult book to write. The author filled the pages with lots of information pertaining to the life changing events of 9/11. This was an area where I sobbed. I had a hard time reading what the 2 main characters felt and saw on that fateful morning. I couldn't imagine standing at ground zero, knowing that thousands of people were going to lose their lives. It would of driven me insane knowing this and not being able to tell anyone about it. I loved how in the end that Nick finally learned what became of Carly. Piper knew that Nick was the love of her life. It took him a bit longer to figure all that out.

I'm looking fwd to reading "Between The Shadows" it's the third book in the Lake Lanier Mysteries series.

Another excellent book. I loved the first one and was very excited for the second. It did not disappoint. I did have to set aside time to read it and tell the family not to bother me while I was buried in the world of Piper and Nick. It is not a standalone, so read them in order. Well done romance part. The story of two people falling in love against the backdrop of the days leading up to 9/11 and bad choices made was about as emotionally involving to me as the reader as it was to the characters. There was more grit to this story than to the one that came before, but it was still a pretty sweet love story. The mystery is more in line with keeping the reader guessing what will happen next and how it could possibly resolve than a “whodoneit”. It wrapped up very neatly at the end leaving me to wonder how the author could possibly get a third book out of this plot. Until the last page. Now I’m anxiously awaiting the third book.

Being a fan of time travel novels I expected to treat myself to "Beyond the Mist". Felt a bit let down because reading Lake Lanier Mysteries, #1 is a must of which I had not experienced. Present day travel back to US's most epic time September 11, 2001. Leaving the love of his life Piper behind; Nick Cramer stealthily prompts a trip back to 2001 to overt the death of a friend that has haunted him for years. Interesting plot of a lake that with the help of a time machine holds a portal to the past. Events Nick alters in the past has tragic repercussions to his friends in the present. "A copy of this book was supplied by The Wild Rose Press, Inc via Netgalley with no requirements of a review. Comments here are my honest opinion."

There is a strange phenomenon in Lake Lanier... a portal that somehow makes time travel possible.

Nick goes back in time to try and fix a mistake that has haunted him, but just maybe things will turn out worse than he could’ve expected.

Piper is drawn to Nick and will do whatever it takes to bring him back, but will they be able to make it back?

Casi McLean has written an emotional and thrilling story. The tragic events of 9/11 are respectfully depicted and play an important role in the storyline. Amy Deuchler delivered a wonderful performance. She truly brought out the emotions of the characters.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
