In this expanded 8th edition, evidence that revolutionizes our understanding of origins is carefully explained. Part I discusses, in quick overview, 131 categories of evidence from biology, astronomy, earth science, and the physical sciences. Part II describes the hydroplate theory, developed during 35 years of study and research by Walt Brown. This theory explains a catastrophic event in Earth's history and solves a host of recognized problems. Some chapters in Part II deal with: the origin of the Grand Canyon, evidence that shows comets, asteroids, and meteroids came from Earth. the sudden freezing and burial of the frozen mammoths, if there was a global flood, where the water came from and where it went, and how mountain ranges, volcanoes, submarine canyons, ocean trenches, and coal and oil deposits were formed. Thirty-seven other frequently asked questions fill a fascinating Part III of Brown's book. A few of those questions are: Is global warming occurring? If so, what causes it? Have scientific tools detected genetic traces of Adam and Eve within us? How accurate is radiocarbon dating? What about the dinosaurs? What hydroplate theory predictions have been confirmed? Is evolution compatible with the Bible?
I am not a big fan of Amazon, but sometimes I appreciate them. Today, their handy Look Inside feature enabled me to leaf through this bizarre piece of pseudo-science, now in its eighth edition, without buying or even touching it.
The author is either deeply cynical or insane; in a spirit of Christian charity, I will assume it is the former. I hope the book has made him some money.
I picked up this book while investigating sources on the antedeluvian world for a piece of historical fiction I'm writing that begins just before Noah's flood. (It turns out that such information is rather hard to find, but I digress.) If I could sum up this book with one word, it would be "Chewy!"
I'm one of a great many people who, over the years, has gone back and forth between various versions of Creation and Evolution. So I found Walt Brown's Hydroplate Theory, on which this book is a treatise (apologies if I'm using the word incorrectly), highly fascinating. It turns a lot of things, figuratively and literally, on their ears. In fact, it challenges so many presuppositions that I found myself doing a bit of a mental double-take several times. And that, in turn, reminded me of what Harlan Bretz must have experienced developing his theory on the Missoula Floods.
One of the things Brown emphasizes right from the beginning and reiterates multiple times is, as Grissom is fond of saying on "CSI," Follow the evidence! No matter where it leads and no matter whether or not you happen to like its implications. Another thing he discusses, and which is particularly relevant in a lot of areas, is that few of us are taught to ask good, probing questions. Which is unfortunate.
In the book, Brown presents and defends, in a very even and objective manner, the evidence in support of Hydroplate Theory and the problems associated with what most of us know as the traditional explanations for the multitude of geologic and cosmologic details related to today's geography. Each chapter has at least one, sometimes three or more, pages of notes and references drawn from diverse sources, which makes it easier for the reader to confirm and further investigate material included in the text. I frequently found myself saying "Whoa. Why didn't I notice that?" It's a very compelling theory and one that's radically changed how I look at modern global geology and geography.
You may have noticed by now that I haven't exactly said WHAT HT is. To do so would take up a LOT of space. That's why I encourage everyone reading this to take a look at it. Most of it's on Brown's web page www.creationscience .com making it more convenient to go read it. And to quote Levar Burton, you don't have to take MY word for it! :-)
This review is for the 8th edition of Dr. Walt Brown's work: "In the Beginning: Compelling Evidence For Creation and the Flood". Dr. Walt Brown's hydroplate theory is tantalizing and thought-provoking.
The entire book, filled with photographs, illustrations, and references, present a solid argument for special creation and a global catastrophic flood. The book contains abundant, meticulously documented reference sources for Dr. Brown's theories and conclusions.
This book is not intended for casual reading, but for a deeper, analytical study of the evidence for biblical creation and the global flood catastrophe record.
The reader may agree or disagree with Dr. Brown's theories and conclusions presented in his work, but I do not believe Dr. Brown's thorough research can be dismissed. The subject matter presented raises serious, legitimate questions to the evidence postulated for the theory of evolution and the age of the earth.
I recommend this book to anyone, with an open mind and without prejudice, who seeks a fresh inquiry into Earth's origins and ancient history.
I've always considered the Young Earth position rather retarded, though I never really took the time to read up on it. Then somewhere I read that this was the best introduction to The Young Earth Theory, so I gave it a shot and found myself more intrigued than I thought I'd be.[return][return]Quite a lot of the discussion is too technical for me (geology, the hydroplate theory etc) but overall I really enjoyed the read. The book's beautifully illustrated with lots of pictures and diagrams and quotes from mainstream scientists to support the author's claims. I can't say I'm convinced, but I don't believe Young Earth Creationists necessarily are as stupid and deranged as I thought (or perhaps I'm stupid and deranged myself!). If you enjoy reading about alternative history (regardless of its merits) you should definitely give this book a try.
A copy of this should be available in every public school science class as well as the library. Fabulous coverage of evidences with pictures, graphs, and a great index system.
Certainly a compelling read. Almost the entirety of this book is written with the effort to avoid all religious arguments and reasoning. Brown applies common laws of science and previously-proven science experimentation, logic, and reasoning to feel through his arguments. He avoids any such "logic" as "because the Christian Bible says so, it is true". In fact, as an ex-evolutionist, and thus know evolutionist theory and potential issues with the theory, he argues quite well against it using evolution logic and research with his points.
The very few things Brown primarily applied Christian scripture to progress an argument with felt a bit less convincing. However, as Brown also primarily uses only evolutionists (their research, quotes, etc) to further the argument of a created universe (not Creationism/necessarily God-created Christian themed), that helped the entire argument hold more water -- at least for me.
Some of the depth of his explanations, descriptions, and arguments is quite astounding and his research, scholarship, and academic credentials shine through. Even if you don't think a created universe could possibly be more true than an evolution-based universe, this is a book that any honest person ought to purchase to read and have their children read. Though evolution is a theory (and scientists who are honest will say so), it's still taught as if it were fact and rarely are any parts of it that have been proven to be false told so in schools. To counter that, even just to give your children a different perspective to consider as part of a well-rounded education, this is a must. Recommended.
I found this book to be rather interesting! Walter Brown's theories are sound and make a lot of sense, concerning the beginning of the world. If you are a creationist, you will get much from this as this is the basis of the book.
A POWERFUL CRITIQUE OF EVOLUTION, AND SOME ORIGINAL PROPOSALS.
Author Walt Brown wrote in the Preface to this 2001 (7th edition) book, “This study began unexpectedly in June of 1970. I was a Christian, an evolutionist, and a new professor at the Air Force Academy… However, the biblical flood was always hard for me to imagine…. For two years I pondered these issues… The case for the Ark’s existence grew stronger as many of my questions were answered… The more I struggled… the more amazed I became at the lack of evidence supporting evolution and the abundant evidence supporting creation. By 1972, I had become a creationist… invitations to speak arose… In this way, the first edition of this book began to ‘evolve.’ In 1978, my wife and I decided the subject was so broad and important that I should pursue it full time… As you read this book, identify questions to ask educators. If they object to any scientific information or conclusion in the book, I will be happy to discuss it with them by telephone, provided you are part of our three-way conversation… Our task, then, is educating the public. People who are aware of this evidence will inevitably bring pressure and embarrassment on the entrenched interests, starting in the classroom.”
He outlines, “Scientific advancements have shown us that evolution is an even more ridiculous theory than it seemed in Darwin’s day. It is a theory without a mechanism… The arguments used by Darwin and his followers are discredited or, at best, in dispute, even among evolutionists… the requirements for life are incredibly complex… Nevertheless, evolutionists still argue against this design oddly enough, using arguments which they spent a great deal of time designing. The theory of organic evolution is invalid.” (Pg. 19)
About the theory of continental drift, he proposes, “These continents … were connected by rock that was rapidly eroded and transported worldwide by erupting subterranean water… As these eroded sediments were deposited, they trapped and buried plants and animals. The sediments became sedimentary rock; buried organisms became fossils… The continents quickly slid on a layer of water (rapid continental drift) away from what is now the mid-Atlantic ridge and came to rest neat their present locations.” (Pg. 97)
He thee explains his “Hydroplate Theory”: “About half the water now in the oceans was once in interconnected chambers about 10 miles below the earth’s surface… Above the subterranean water was a granite crust… With less water on the earth’s surface, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas were joined across what is now the Atlantic Ocean… On the crust were seas, both deep and shallow, and mountains, generally smaller than those of today… water was trapped and sealed under the crust… Eventually, this shell of rock reached its failure point. Failure began with a microscopic crack at the earth’s surface… Within seconds, this crack penetrated down to the subterranean chamber … along a great-circle path around the earth… the ten-mile-thick crust opened … Water exploded with great violence… a fountain of water jetted supersonically into and FAR ABOVE the atmosphere… This produced torrential rains such as the earth has never experienced… Eroded particles (or sediments) were swept up in the waters that gushed out from the rupture… These sediments settled out over the earth’s surface in days, trapping and burying many plants and animals, beginning the process of forming the world’s fossils… the compression event at the end of the continental drift phase easily and continually crushed and thickened each hydroplate for many minutes. Mountains were quickly squeezed up. Mountains formed and overthrusts occurred as the weaker portions of the hydroplates crushed and buckled.” (Pg. 99-104)
He suggests, “The Grand Canyon appears to have been carved a few centuries after the flood---after animals and humans migrated to the region… A Navajo legend about the Grand Canyon may give another reason for dating it several centuries after the global flood… Apparently, a local flood inundated norther Arizona… Survivors discovered the newly formed Grand Canyon, still carrying runoff from the local flood. Therefore, the Grand Canyon formed while people occupied that area.” (Pg. 118) Later, he adds, “The Ice Age followed the flood.” (Pg. 174) He also says, “The ‘fountains of the great deep’ launched rocks as well as muddy water… many rocks and their surrounding clouds of water vapor merged to become asteroids… [and] concentrated asteroids in what is now the asteroid belt.” (Pg. 219)
He argues that uniformitarian geologists in the 1800s would “simply … disallow global catastrophes… How were catastrophes disallowed? Professors … were primarily selected from those who supported the anticatastrophe principle. These professors did not advance students who espoused catastrophes. An advocate of a global flood was branded … not worthy of an academic degree… This practice continues to this day.” (Pg. 181)
He cites the work of astronomer Barry Setterfield: “His results show that the speed of light has apparently decreased so rapidly that experimental error cannot explain it!... it is hard to see how one can claim, with any statistical rigor, that the speed of light has remained constant… Although the speed of light has only decreased a percent or so during the past three centuries, the decrease is statistically significant… The speed of light appears to increase at an accelerating rate the farther one looks back in time… Projecting… back in time, the speed of light becomes so fast that conceivably light from distant galaxies could have reached Earth in several thousand years… V.S. Troitskii… concluded, independently of Setterfield, that the speed of light was ten billion times faster at time zero!... If either Setterfield or Troitskii is correct, the big bang theory will fall (with a big bang).” (Pg. 232)
He asserts, “Archaeopteryx’s fame seems assured, not as a transitional fossil between dinosaurs (or reptiles) and birds, but as a forgery… Because the apparent motive for the Archaeopteryx forgery was money, Archaeopteryx should be labeled as a FRAUD… Piltdown man may soon be replaced as the most famous hoax in all of science.” (Pg. 242)
He quotes the Book of Job (ch. 40 & 41) and its mention of “Behemoth” and “Leviathan,” adding, “For the past three centuries, unconfirmed reports have come from the Congo in western Africa that dinosaurs exist in remote swamps… If any of these accounts are correct, man and dinosaurs are contemporaries. Consider the many dragon legends. Most ancient cultures have stories or artwork of dragons that strongly resemble dinosaurs… The simplest and most obvious explanation for so many common descriptions of dragons from around the world is that man knew the dinosaurs.” (Pg. 249-250)
About fish after the flood, he notes, “Natural selection eliminated fish in each generation that could not tolerate the declining salinity… LIMITED variations in each generation allowed rapid adaptation in their ability to control the water in their bodies. This is microevolution, not macroevolution. Meanwhile, fish that ended up in the new oceans had to tolerate slowly increasing salinity or face extinction. Survivors became our saltwater fish…. Perhaps, wider salinity tolerances, such as those of salmon, existed before the flood.” (Pg. 253)
He strongly rejects the notion of a “Water Canopy,” observing, “No canopy theory claims to provide all the water for a global flood… If flood water fell from a canopy high above the atmosphere, where did that water go after the flood. Somehow transporting this water back into outer space or suddenly forming deep ocean basins after the flood is hard to imagine or explain. However the phrase ‘the fountains of the great deep’ implies that the flood water came from subterranean sources.” (Pg. 260)
Brown’s case against evolution on pages 1-83 is very succinct and forcefully stated. But his “original” ideas (e.g., the Hydroplate theory; the formation of the Grand Canyon, etc.) are often not accepted by even many “young earth” creationists (e.g., ICR, Answers in Genesis, even Kent Hovind). So ‘caveat emptor’ to purchasers of the book.
I read an older version, but it was very good. I had thought it looked to textbook like, but was pleased that it was riveting. I love how he shows his notes in the back of his book. After reading it I decided to see what the opposition said about the book. I looked on the internet and at the time there were only 2 sites that I found with negative feed back. One only discussed that he had not cleared the quotes according to the way they wanted. The other was a childish music video, done by a "scientist" who had not bothered to read it. When I asked her why she hadn't read it her response was that she didn't have to read it to know it was wrong, because she was a scientist. I have yet to see any thing to disprove the information in this book and hope that others will enjoy it as I did.
In an extensive library of Creation & Evolution science books, I consider Dr. Brown's to be the best in the field. Extensively documented and footnoted, and generally well-arranged and presented. His logic, research, and command of both the relevant sciences and the Bible are in a class by themselves. Whenever someone asks for a recommendation to begin studying the field, this is where I point them.
The fact that Dr. Brown makes the book available for free online is all the more reason point them here.
This was such a fascinating book. It is accessible even for those without a science background (like me). It just requires a little extra effort to understand it. I just finished the 8th edition, but I am excited to read the new chapter on radioactivity on his free online book! This has definitely been a renaissance of scientific learning for me, and I believe this theory is a huge step forward. I can't wait to learn more!
God hasn't asked us to set aside our intelligence to serve Him and have faith in Him. All it takes is opening our eyes to the intricate details of the world around us that work perfectly together in harmony to maintain life as we know it, to realize that there is a designer behind this design. This book will not help you to convince someone who refuses to take an open look at the evidence around them. It is absolutely wonderful, though, to show to someone who has honest doubts, but is searching for the truth- what ever that truth may be. God has given us plenty of evidence of His existence and the legitimacy of His word. If that's what you're wanting to learn more about, then this book is for you. From a scientific standpoint, it is to the point, deep but totally understandable. If you're intimidated by science, don't be intimidated to get this book... the author does a great job at staying to the point and making it plain to the average person.
I'm an extreme skeptic to YEC. Dr. Brown's Hydroplate Theory seems to be able to explain how the global flood could have happened. But as a casual observer and having not done the math, it would seem that the explosions would have destroyed all life especially sea life. Also, based upon his gravity modeling he applied, so much heat might have been generated that the ocean's should have boiled. I don't know.
His belief that the speed of light and radioactive decay have slowed down is begging. Huge problem satisfying the Law of Conservation, E=mc2.
However, I did enjoy Brown's explanations on somethings like the frozen mammoths and the origin of asteroids and comets in our solar system. His theories do seem plausible but I need to study them more.
Not a big fan of his style. For a Christian, he is not very gracious to the counter view.
Poorly researched. Many claims are inaccurate or incorrect. Even the footnotes/sources didn't match or had contradictory claims. Read this instead: https://ncse.com/cej/4/1/impossible-v...
The science we learned in school doesn’t hold up any more. The science we’ve seen in our lifetimes sometimes directly contradicts the old narrative. The world is a very interesting place and this book brings this to the fore.
Loads of errors in here. For instance: Archeopteryx was NOT a fake, the majority of mammoths were NOT flash-frozen, the vast majority of limestone is NOT chemically precipitated, the out-of-place fossils he mentions are actually not that weird, etc. This book is testimony to the disadvantages of running a one-man research operation: lack of editors and peer review.
Very good overview of the creation-evolution debate. Apparently, part two of the book is based on conferences given by the author; however, it includes only three of the nine available. Also, since the book was published in 1995, some parts are out of date (for example, it has the fishing ship Zuigo Maru catching a plesiosaur).
