This book was written from the heart of a man that landed himself in a federal prison. Bully Me Badd shows how Damond Pires was mentally and physically bullied until he decided to "man up". Advice he got from his Uncle Bump. Damond Pires jumped in hot water before he even realized what happened to him. This is a very tragic but inspiring story that expose bullying and it's effects from a different angle.
Bully Me Badd is education. It’s education in so many ways. It teaches you to understand the emotions of someone whom you may judge without knowing what brought him to the situation you’re judging him for. No matter how different your life is from the Da’mond Pires, you’ll relate to various parts of his struggle. His life story is emotion-evoking, and you can’t get past what you’ll feel about his journey.
It’s also education for kids and teenagers who may be influenced by different circumstances in their lives to follow similar paths to the main character’s. It demonstrates the impact of every choice you make leading you to the path that ultimately makes or breaks your entire life. This book is poignant for kids who may be suffering from bullying (the bully or the bullied) and/or experiencing negative influence/lack of support at home. The choices that the main character made to put him into his horrible situation and ultimately have a chance to set his life straight were many, and you see them all throughout the book. From the time Da’mond Pires is 5 years old sitting in the bathroom hurting because of the damaging words of an unknowing child at daycare to the pressure of his older brother and cousin at Walmart to steal a toy that his grandmother didn’t want him to have to the decision he made to “hit the streets” after being severly beaten by an older relative to the day of the felony assault that landing him in prison at 19 years old. So many choices could have changed his fate.
Finally, it’s education for parents. If a child is experiencing what young Da’mond’s did in school, most parents are at a loss on what to tell their child. Being bullied (or being the bully) at school is so much deeper than the situation, and the advice you give your children during emotionally draining times is so important. The fact that the main character could have been swayed by an understanding, sympathetic adult is thought-provoking and teaches parents a magnificent lesson.
This is a book that EVERYONE can benefit from reading. It’s a book that digs into the emotion and relevance of today and doesn’t let go-- even when you’re finished reading it.
