That ending! What the . . .
I don't even know what to say. Everything changed in a blink of an eye.
Tyrus is the new emperor and Nemesis is to be the new empress at his side. They are having a bit of a problem with the Galaxy not wanting a diabolic to be empress. It seems people are trying to kill them every time you turn around, mostly Nemesis.
Then we are going along, thinking there might be some progress and then BAM! All hell breaks loose and my feelings!!!!!
I will nervously await the next book!

More specifically, this was a 3.5 for me that I decided to round up because of how gripping this book was. When I was asked to review The Diabolic I was under the impression that it was a standalone fantasy novel and wasn't expecting the extension into a three book deal. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed initially, but after the somewhat lack of closure from book one I could see why maybe this should have been slated as a trilogy all along. I usually struggle immensely with the middle segment of a trilogy; almost always it is a 3 star or less regardless of high ratings for the previous and following novels. This was a first-rate example of a book that turns intended filler into something a bit more exciting, tense, and creative than the regular cream of the Oreo.
If you haven't read this first book, just know you'll need to start there and can't really expect to jump into this as a standalone. The book picks up a bit after where the first one ends and, while the title is a bit of a spoiler for an outcome itself, I think it was intended for us to anticipate what's coming, almost as foreshadowing. Honestly, I expected to be skimming and snoozing through this book, but color me surprised when the middle installment (THE RED HEADED STEPCHILD RIGHT?! ) kept my heart pacing while sitting on the edge of my seat. If you enjoy most of the court related fantasy/sci-fi in the YA genre right now, I think you'll enjoy this as well. Just make sure you've read the first book and go into this one as blind as possible. <3

The Empress was a fantastic sequel to the excellent Diabolic. The first book actually had the feel of a standalone novel but I'm glad the series got expanded into a trilogy as this sequel proves that there was more worthwhile stories to be told in this world and that S.J. Kincaid had more than enough cool ideas to keep the story fresh and exciting!
This picked up where the first book ended. Tyrus may have rid himself of his evil family and assumed the mantle of Emperor but that is not the end of the problems for him and his beloved, Nemesis. The Faith is still resistant to the idea of a Diabolic being given rights as a human and especially to one marrying the Emperor! Add to that the fact that Tyrus has to deal with a mounting political divide in the Senate as a lot of his fathers stalwart supporters among the Grandiloquy flock to the powerful Senator Alectar Von Pasus. Pasus has an even more personal reason to hate Nemesis than most as she killed his daughter! It was up to Tyrus and Nemesis to try and hold the throne and guide the Empire into the new age of enlightenment and equality that Tyrus has always envisioned.
It sounds like the plot involves a lot of court politics and intrigue and while it does have a lot of that it also has tons of action and shock twists and turns just like the first book. It was all very exiting and engaging stuff as both Nemesis and Tyrus had to decide how far they were willing to go to ensure their hold on power!
S. J. Kincaid had an engaging writing style and I loved both the characters and the story itself. The world building was a little simplistic and there were a few plot contrivances but none of that overly hurt the story as I do enjoy this cool sci-fi world and the the plot itself was a ton of fun!
The big thing that stands out in this series is that I can never quite figure out where the story is going. Just when you think you have it figured out Kincaid will throw in an exciting twist that will totally change things. We got a whole bunch of them in this instalment and it made for exciting, and often shocking, reading!
Nemesis is again this stories single POV character and she proves as likeable and unusual as ever. She still has some of her Diabolic nature but is trying to learn to be more human. I loved following her story as she tried to balance the morals of being human with her need as a Diabolic to keep Tyrus safe at any cost.
All in all I really loved this YA sci-fi story. This series is already one of the all time YA favourites. It does not have the depth of some other series and can be a touch simplistic at times in terms plot and worldbuilding but it has great pacing, great characters, a ton of exciting happenings, and that special indefinable something that sucks me completely into a story!

Audio Note: I think Candace Thaxton actually had the cold while she was recording this one as she sounded a bit nasally at times but that did not damage things much and she still turned in a great performance of the audio.
Reread Update: This was every bit as enjoyable the second time around. I should mention this series is a tad darker and of even more crazy twists and turns than I remembered but it keeps things ultra tense and exciting and the fun and likeable characters balance out some of the darker content and keep this a compelling and fantastic story!

What I Liked:
I. Am. Slain. Vanquished. Defeated. Here lies Alyssa, perished by the hand of S.J. Kincaid due to a particular emotion-evoking book written by said vanquisher. I don't even know how to process what I've just read. I was going along, reading the book very gamely, getting a little more anxious as it went, and then BAM! The ending. I am shooketh. (Is that what the young people say these days? I'm 22. I should know these things. I don't.)
The Empress picks up after The Diabolic left off, with Tyrus ascending the throne as Emperor, and Nemesis by his side. Many are opposed to their upcoming union, but it hasn't stopped them from making appearances together. But being in love might not be enough in the world of politics. One Senator in particular wants to manipulate and maneuver his way up, and Tyrus and Nemesis must figure out a way to stop him without outright killing him. They will fight for each other and die for each other, and this may be their downfall. All Nemesis ever wanted was to be seen as human, and to be happy with Tyrus. But the fate of the galaxy is so much bigger than her and Tyrus's love for each other. Sacrifices must be made, morals must be cast aside, and lines must be drawn. This sequel is sure to bring readers to the edge of their seats and desperate for more.
Well, it definitely had me on the edge of my seat. And I'm definitely begging for more. Where the heck are the rest of the pages?! The ending of this book was so cruel. I guess that's as good a spot as any to start with, in this review. The ending of this book is where all of the shenanigans I'd been expecting occurred. HOW does Kincaid do this to readers?! I was howling as I was reading the ending. I have no idea how the author is going to turn things around in book three (if she is going to turn things around). Do I WANT her to turn things around? Kind of? But also no? But also yes?
The pacing of this book is somewhat fast, though initially, not quite. A lot happens in the book and a lot of time passes (think on the scale of years). The author did an amazing job of making time pass, although it broke my heart a little bit (because of how the passage of time was done). It was so cool - the explanation and whatnot - but it was also sad because lost time. Nobody likes to lose time! But again, the science is really cool.
In fact the science aspect of the story in general is cool, in all parts. The time passage thing is neat but this whole story is sci-fi, set among various planets and starships and among the stars as Tyrus and Nemesis hop into hyperspace to travel across the galaxy. I love YA sci-fi, so I was really happy about how science-heavy this book was. Not enough to be off-putting to non-sci-fi-loving people, I promise!
Another heavy aspect of the book was the politics. There is a lot of politics in this book, from start to finish. A lot of negotiating, a lot of scheming, a lot of betraying, a lot of careful planning, a lot of backstabbing... a lot of everything political. Tyrus is a political mastermind, and I loved seeing his brain work. Seeing him and Senator Pasus try to outsmart and outmaneuver each other was nerve-wracking but also kind of thrilling (at least whenever Tyrus gained the upper hand).
Speaking of Tyrus, I adored him. He is so clever and "Type A", always thinking ahead and planning and overthinking. I connect with him on that level, although he is more masterminded than me. He plays the long game, and suffers as he does it, but he endures. His strength of mind and iron will are so impressive. I'm rooting for him in book three.
Nemesis is such a wonderful protagonist to follow. This book is written entirely from her first-person POV, and while I would have loved to read from Tyrus's first-person POV, it was just fine to have her narrative alone. She grows even more in this book, with having to make so many difficult decisions. She and Tyrus fight alongside each other and really learn their limits. While Tyrus is intelligent and clever, Nemesis is loyal and stubborn. I didn't love a few of her decisions, but at the same time, I put myself in her position and there is a good chance I'd do the same.
I looooove how Tyrus and Nemesis two would fight and die for each other. They prove this over and over, how willing they are to sacrifice themselves, and the extreme lengths they'd go to protect the other. I really ship this romance and I loved seeing them grow closer and closer in this book. As individuals, they are super cool and I admire them. As a couple, they are wonderful together and I ship them. Sparks really really fly and the pages heat up in this book. And they are actually together for the majority of the book, which is surprising for a second book in a trilogy. You don't ever see that (usually the couple is split up early on). I was happy to see them together with no internal couple drama between them. It's that ending though.
That. Ending. It changes everrrrrrrything. In a good and bad way. I'm so curious as to how Kincaid is going to go about book three. I'm hoping for one thing, but that thing seems impossible. But knowing our hero, and knowing our heroine, nothing is impossible.
Seriously, Tyrus is wicked smart and plans and accounts for everything. And Nemesis is kickbutt and seemingly indestructible. So. We shall see!
I'm not going to say too much about the plot because a ton of action happens in the book, whether it is flying off into space or being imprisoned or fighting narcotics (yeah, there is a lot going on). This book made me grow more and more anxious but 100% hooked and needing to know what happens next. Once I settled into the first couple of chapters, I was hooked.
If you couldn't tell, I am sooo looking forward to reading book three. I hope it is on track to be an October 2018 publication (or earlier???). Gimmee.

Not only did it NOT disappoint me, but it is probably the first YA book in a loooong time that actually made me FEEL things like excitement and anxiety and thrill. Well, a lot of those things. I've been feeling very "meh" about YA but this book was given me life. It also drained that same life with the ending, but that's irrelevant (well not really). This sequel is exciting and thrilling and just as good as its predecessor. And it sets up really well for an intense final novel!

4.5 stars. I am so here for this third book. Also I'm terrified of it. I'm so afraid of how things will end because how else are they supposed to end?! Hopefully Kincaid does something that will make readers happy. I really don't want to rage over the final book. Pleaseeeee let me love it. I hate it when you love a series and you support it so much and then the final novel is a huge disappointment that makes you want to set things on fire!

1) The diabolic ★★★★☆
If I had a physical copy in my hands I'd tear out the last 70 or so pages and burn them, I HATE YOU S.J. KINCAID YOU BETTER FIX EVERYTHING IN THE LAST BOOK
THE PLOT
The problem is still the same: in the first part, we see Tyrus and Nemesis struggling to survive many assassinations attempts while at the same time searching for a way to wed and rule together without the Grandiloquy and Vicars opposing them.
But this is just a small, very small part of the plot. S.J.Kincaid is always ready the crush our souls and dreams with breathtaking and heartbreaking plot twists and I'm not kidding when I say that I wanted to throw my kindle out the window while reading the last 20% of the book.
She destroyed one of my favourite aspects of the story and even if it's objectively one hell of a powerful plot twist, I lost some of the love I have for this trilogy. I really hope this will be fixed in the last book but I'm not keeping my hopes up.
THE PROTAGONISTS
Nemesis: she's the heart of the story, I love her to pieces and I hope she'll have the happy ending she deserves. She's not the typical ya protagonist, she kills, manipulates, poisons and does what needs to be done in order to survive and protect the people she loves.
Yes, she made a big mistake that let to the horrible finale, but she did so out of love and my heart broke for her when she realised it was all her fault.
Tyrus: well, he's not your typical ya love interest either. He's not as "cruel" as Nemesis but he's not an angel. He's always ten steps ahead. What happens to him in The empress is unbelievable and I really hope it will be fixed.

The problem is still the same: in the first part, we see Tyrus and Nemesis struggling to survive many assassinations attempts while at the same time searching for a way to wed and rule together without the Grandiloquy and Vicars opposing them.
But this is just a small, very small part of the plot. S.J.Kincaid is always ready the crush our souls and dreams with breathtaking and heartbreaking plot twists and I'm not kidding when I say that I wanted to throw my kindle out the window while reading the last 20% of the book.
She destroyed one of my favourite aspects of the story and even if it's objectively one hell of a powerful plot twist, I lost some of the love I have for this trilogy. I really hope this will be fixed in the last book but I'm not keeping my hopes up.
THE PROTAGONISTS
Nemesis: she's the heart of the story, I love her to pieces and I hope she'll have the happy ending she deserves. She's not the typical ya protagonist, she kills, manipulates, poisons and does what needs to be done in order to survive and protect the people she loves.
Yes, she made a big mistake that let to the horrible finale, but she did so out of love and my heart broke for her when she realised it was all her fault.
Tyrus: well, he's not your typical ya love interest either. He's not as "cruel" as Nemesis but he's not an angel. He's always ten steps ahead. What happens to him in The empress is unbelievable and I really hope it will be fixed.

The Empress by S.J. Kincaid is the second book in the young adult science fiction/fantasy series, The Diabolic. The first book in the series introduced readers to Nemesis who is a Diabolic. Diabolics are engineered to be human like but extremely strong and powerful and meant to bond to one person and protect them at all costs. Nemesis had been bonded to a young girl, Sidonia, who had been summoned to appear before the emperor. It was thought that Sidonia might be walking into a trap so Nemesis had taken her place to protect her. During that time Nemesis bonded with Tyrus who was in line to take the throne.
Now Tyrus has ascended to the throne with Nemesis by his side but there are many that oppose a Diabolic becoming the next Empress. Tyrus and Nemesis must deal with many who wish to control the young Emperor as he fights to bring technology and knowledge back to the masses. The ruling class, the Grandiloquy, however do not wish Tyrus to continue to rule and will do anything to see that his reign is ended to keep their control of the empire.
When picking up The Diabolic, the first book in this series, I was quite under the impression that the book was meant to be a standalone at the time it was published. I think though there were many that asked for the story to continue since it was a really good one that left a lot of room for continuation so now it seems that this is due to become a trilogy and I was quite excited to continue on reading of Nemesis' world.
The Empress sort of reads as if the middle book of a trilogy in the fact that it spent a lot of time building up conflict and connecting the story which gave it a slower pace. I was beginning to wonder if we were in for the shocks and surprises that the first book held or simply a lot of world building. At the end of this book the intensity really picked up yet again leaving the reader at a huge cliffhanger to lead into the next book. So while this one seemed a slower pace I still ended up really excited to continue on and would definitely recommend checking out this series, it's definitely one that needs to be enjoyed from the beginning though and not out of order.

Its so rare for me lately to find a book that I have this level of excitement for. It reminds me of those days when I was fangirling over Twilight and the Hunger Games. The days when I first discovered YA and everything was new and exciting. The space setting, the fascinating technology and the politics were all wonderfully done. It reminded me of the things I loved about the Red Rising trilogy.
In the first book we follow a Diabolic named Nemesis who was genetically engineered to be a bodyguard for the daughter of an important political figure. In order to protect her when the emporer requests the children of important political figures to be brought to court as hostages Nemesis takes her place. While impersonating her charge Nemesis discovers a dangerous plot brewing at court.
The characters and the thrilling plot kept me on the edge of my seat. Some of the characters developpement didnt go in the direction I wanted, but it made the story that much more intense. Tyrus developpement completely crushed my soul. My poor little crazy muffin. I also really wanted the romance to go in a different direction. I have to admit it worked for the story, but this girl was really hoping for a better outcome.
The treacherous scenes were nerve wracking, and thankfully I never felt like it was Nemesis bad decisions that put her in those situations. I found that the friendship element was lacking in this book, and thats one of the things I really enjoyed about the first book. Nevenis developpement made her less likeable. I thought her craziness made things really entertaining, but I missed the old Neveni.
Even though I saw some of the deceptions coming this was still an emotional roller coaster ride. The title is pretty spoilery if you havent read the first book, but theres so many other twists that it more than makes up for it. This book evoked such strong emotions of heartbreak and betrayal I havent felt that deeply while reading a book in a long time.
You have to go into this knowing it will not be all unicorns and rainbows. It will rip your heart out and then proceed to stomp on it. Things will not work out the way you want them to. That being said, I really enjoyed it. In a way Im glad things didnt turn out perfect because that would probably be a very boring story. I also thought the history about Earth was a great addition to the story.
Overall this was a quick gripping read with compelling characters. When I first read the Diabolic I thought it was a standalone and Im so happy we're getting a series in this world. I cant wait for the next book. I think Ill have to read the authors other books to tie me over. If want something as intense as Red Rising but even easier to get into Id definitely recommend this. Id also recommend this too anyone who enjoys ruthless characters and deadly political plots.

Talk about betrayal being very prominent in a story. This was a fascinating sequel and I cannot wait for book three to come out! I cannot think of how to write a review without spoiling anything about this sequel so I will just keep it short and say it was a great installment that leaves you waiting and waiting so more for book three!

Intense, adrenalin and action packed, 'edge of the seat' gripping book. Even better than the first one. So many twists and betrayals, so much destruction and mass murder. No one is safe and no one can be trusted. If you like action packed high-octane thriller - couldn't recommend more.
My only quibble - it ends if not on complete cliffhanger but certainly without conclusive ending. May be worth waiting for the release of the third book.

“Half a lifetime of dedication, love, and effort, and it was demolished in a second. The universe was so cruel. What a fool I’d been to forget it.”
I’m actually kinda sad, because I didn’t really love this one as much as I wanted to. It kinda felt like all the parts I loved about The Diabolic were shifted away from to focus on the politics. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE politics in SFF stories, but I felt like the characters were really given the short stick because of all the political power plays.
I really loved Nemesis and Tyrus’ relationship in the beginning of the story. It felt much like the partnership we see in book 1. They protect each other and support each other, and I loved it. But their relationship really gets the shaft because of the political drama that comes into play, especially with Senator Pasus and his agenda. I just didn’t connect to this story nearly as much as the previous one. The time jumps and character’s actions really hindered my ability to connect and enjoy the story.

I've tried, retried and tried again but I can't get past all the religious stuff. I adored the first installment but have, after much deliberation, finally decided to treat the Diabolic as a standalone.

SUMMED UP:
While this world building was FANTASTIC, the Empress took every likable character from the first book and turned them into awful annoying villains, making this infuriatingly frustrating & unsatisfying to read.
FULL REVIEW:
The Empress takes place shortly after the events in the first book, the Diabolic (a book that I must preface saying that I ADORED) with Tyrus and Nemesis figuring out how to rule. We have a new problem added to the mix-a sceptar that controls and unifies the Chrysanthemum that can only be turned on with both the blood of a Domitirian and the vicar. With Nemesis besides Tyrus, the vicar refuse to support so they must find another way to get the sceptar working.
While the beginning is very political & religious I did love getting back into this world. I LOVE Nemisis and Tyrus together and it was fun to see them take on the Universe head on as a pair. On top of that, the world building is absolutely fantastic and wonderful in The Empress. This world is SO VAST and beautiful and I had the best time imagining it all. But that first half is where my reading enjoyment ended for me.
Nemesis, as a Diabolic has a very straight forward thought process and emotional capacity. While you love her as your protagonist it doesn't make her the most charming or likable. That is where characters like Sidonia, Neveni and Tyrus made up for it in the first book-or at least gave you some emotional range to Nemesis while they are around her. The Empress decides to take all these likable characters and turn them into awful people without replacing or adding to the "likable character" roster. And BOY does this make it a TRUDGING read in the second half. (I mean 15+ chapters with a Zombie Tyrus was seriously THE MOST ANNOYING THING EVER). The book was ALL NEGATIVE and it NEVER got better. There was NO comedic relief and it was a burden to get through. Nemesis just isn't likable enough to carry a whole book on her back, as much as I really wanted her to be. I think the worst part about these characters taking a turn, was that the turn was blamed on Nemesis for saving their life-NO.
I also thought there were way to many convenient plot devices-which is so easy to do in SciFis. The Scepter-which is never mentioned in the first book-seemed like a concocted problem for a sequel (I mean they went years without it and what happened?!). Venolux and Resolvent Mist also seemed too convenient. The trip to the Sacred City is described as deathly. The first trip and in all subsequent trips, it seemed to be just another flight. I could also not fathom how there were no consequences EVER for anything Pasus did and that there would be no one raising an eyebrow to Zombie Tyrus. Everything Pasus did was so absurd it was so far from believable to me.
While I do not think you always have to have a fan service in your books, MAN was this so unsatisfying. On top of all the good characters being ANNOYING and AWFUL now, the main baddy doesn't get a satisfying consequence for the reader and almost everything you thought you were looking forward to in the book did not happen. Like THROW US A BONE HERE!!!
I do have to give Kincaid props on the wonderful writing, because the dialogue was done so well, the action sequences were well thought out and executed well, and I can't praise that world building enough. I am just so sad that he had to ruin all of these wonderful characters.

I. DON’T. UNDERSTAND. THIS BOOK BROKE ME TO SO MANY PIECES.
Honestly, I have to commend SJ Kincaid for being able to manipulate my emotions time and again in this book alone. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I had no idea what to feel while I reading it. I felt all the emotions–joy, sadness, anger, shock, dread, excitement, betrayal, you name it. I felt them all. And that speaks volumes of Kincaid’s talent as a writer.
If you briefly forgot what happened in Book 1, you don’t have to reread it to understand Book 2. There are brief explanations within this book that recap what happened in The Diabolic, so now you have no reason to not read this book! Please pick it up. You simply have to see the genius of The Empress.
For a sci-fi book, I was mildly surprised at how comical some scenes were. I literally cackled out loud at some lines delivered by the characters.
“I am not making up the Theory of Relativity!” The Interdict roared. “I am not Albert Einstein. Are you telling me that you, Tyrus–the Emperor–do not know the basic laws of physics? You were totally unaware of the basic laws of physics?”
I know it may seem unfunny sans context, but I promise you’ll understand that hilariousness of this line once you read this book.
I’d like to point out that the synopsis is a bit misleading, because the actual story seemed too far from what it prepared us for. Sometimes the plot may seem too all over the place, but it’s all reconciled in the end and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! I don’t know how I survived that rollercoaster of a story but once I finished it, my only reaction was pure shock and feeling of sublimity.
Pure genius written by SJ Kincaid. I have nothing else to say. This deserves all the stars in the Empire. I can’t believe I have to wait a year for Book 3.

The Empress is the second book in the Diabolic series however you could probably read The Empress on its own and still be in for a really good read. But if you truly want to understand and care about the characters reading “The Diabolic” first is my recommendation.
Tyrus is now Emperor and with Nemesis by his side they plan to bring back science and knowledge. There are many that oppose the young Emperor and especially the idea of a diabolic becoming the next Empress. There are many attempts on their lives and Nemesis starts to take matters into her own hands to rid Tyrus of his enemies.
Tyrus strives for a voluntary union throughout the Empire which has been ruled by fear for generations. Alectar van Pasus, his biggest objector, believes that Tyrus is being idealistic.
”If you give the people knowledge they will want more and then use that knowledge against you.” - Pasus
”Remove the reason for them to turn those weapons on us, and it will not happen.” - Tyrus
”They will turn those weapons upon us because they hate us, and they always have. Their descendants will hate our descendants, as their ancestors hated our ancestors.” - Pasus
Is Tyrus idealistic or visionary? Is Pasus a realist or a pessimist?
This book gives more of an overview of the universe they preside over and more of the politics. There is much death, destruction and cruelty. At times it feels like all hope is lost and then there are the twists and turns. No-one can be trusted! Nemesis’ character continues to evolve and her love for Tyrus never waivers.
Kincaid doesn’t balk at making her heroes submissive or evil, even turning on each other with venom thus sending the reader on a roller coaster of emotions as you follow Nemesis from despair to euphoria then plunged back into despair and when you think you can’t get any lower.....that ending!!!
This book made my heart race, made me happy and made me angry...... a lot. Life doesn’t always go smoothly; we don’t always get what we want. Sometimes evil prevails.

I enjoyed reading book 2 the same as the first one. There are a lot of twists in the story, and I came to loved Nemesis, as she is special and unique. Can’t wait to see what book 3 will bring! ❤️

Second Read
I genuinely do not understand how this series has flown so under the radar. This is such phenomenal sci-fi! The worldbuilding is fabulous, the political intrigue fierce, and it keeps you on your toes almost from start to finish. Even knowing what came this time, I was still heartbroken on no less than three occasions. I re-read this with the audiobook, and the narrator was phenomenal!

Um...there is no possible way that there are enough words to express how unbelievably fantastic this was! I can't remember the last time a book made me feel so much. Half of it I was overly indignant for both Nemesis and Tyrus, and the rest was just a whirlwind of emotion that changed with each chapter read. The twists and turns and deceptions Kincaid writes of are so delicious and intriguing that I couldn't put it down. One more chapter always, ALWAYS turned into five more. I never thought I would enjoy a tale with such devious political machinations as the focus, but hot damn, this was too good to say no to at any point. Admittedly the beginning was a little rough but that very quickly changed. I quite literally can't say enough good things about this book and I quite literally cannot wait to get my hands on the last one.

The twists and turns and deceptions Kincaid writes of are so delicious and intriguing that I couldn't put it down. One more chapter always, ALWAYS turned into five more. I never thought I would enjoy a tale with such devious political machinations as the focus, but hot damn, this was too good to say no to at any point. Admittedly the beginning was a little rough but that very quickly changed. I quite literally can't say enough good things about this book and I quite literally cannot wait to get my hands on the last one.

Lords above THAT ENDING!! Varied of things that transpired in this whirlwind of a plotline is unexpected, twisted and so complicated I can't even. And Tyrus oh my beloved Tyrus, what should I make of you after what you did in the end?? I honestly don't know if my heart can take what is gona happen in the third book.

okay so, not what I expected. especially after reading The Diabolic, which happened to introduce me to the sci-fi genre and I loved it! I genuinely appreciated it as a stand alone and would have never expected a second book, because things wrapped up perfectly!
I don’t really know what I expected in this book but I was confused for 60% or more. It was really hard to recall characters and terms from the first book.
& this book changed my opinion on a lot of characters. and the series as a whole and what's to come.

- neveni. THIS GIRL NEEDS TO BLAST INTO A BLACK HOLE. she really hit a sore point for me and that ending didn’t play well with me because of her.
-also I am SO confused about Tyrus. he was my sweet love and now he’s ruthless and I kinda liked that about him except WHAT HAS HE BECOME and will we ever get the real tyrus back?? i need answers 😣😭
- also the entire Nemesis turning human thing confused the hell outta me and I only started to understand somewhat at the end?? but still come on now she’s not a Diabolic so it wrecks the purpose, no?

This book’s ratings are lower than the first in the series, but I found it quite a satisfactory sequel.
If you are expecting the non-stop action of the first, you might have to adjust your expectations, simply because we are at a completely different point in the story line — but if you stick with it, I think you won’t be disappointed.
There are a lot of unexpected turns of events, The MCs go through a lot and I think the way they deal with it and how they emerge from it all adds a lot of dimension to their characters.
I really enjoyed it — it still has that mix of sci-fi, romance, action, and just a hint of thriller, and it kept me guessing until the very end. I also went though a whole battery of feelings while reading this, and was a bit of a mess by the end!
I am looking forward to the last book in the trilogy, and I think I’m probably going to want to re-read this in the future!

Etwas Schlimmes, Unmoralisches mitanzusehen und tatsächlich etwas dagegen zu tun- das ist eine Seltenheit. Das bringt kaum jemand fertig.

Ich muss sagen, dass sich der Anfang gezogen hat, zu unterschiedlich war alles im Gegensatz zum ersten Band. Aber je weiter die Geschichte voranschritt, umso besser wurde das Buch und ich kann es kaum erwarten, den dritten Band in der Finger zu kriegen!
Der Schreibstil wird gefühlt auch gegen Ende immer mitreißender und Nemesis findet zu einer immer besseren Form zurück. Das Buch überrascht und weiß den Leser mal weniger, mal mehr zu fesseln.

Still reeling from the events of the last quarter of the book. I'm angry and frustrated...but I suppose that's to be expected? Definitely looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.
The Empress started off awfully slow. It was mostly politics and setting the stage, but I see now that it was meant to build up to the end of the book. It picks up halfway through, and becomes very difficult to put down. The author has a way with suspense and shocking surprises.
Nemesis is badass...but only at times. She's very dependent I suppose? on Tyrus. She follows his orders--though also disobeys him--but all with the purpose of protecting him. I suppose that's kind of contradictory...but she doesn't really act for herself or her own interests, if that makes sense. Maybe this is part of her character development, but it still left me unsatisfied.
And Tyrus...ah Tyrus. By the end of the Diabolic, I wasn't his greatest fan. He definitely is better in The Empress, trying to treat Nemesis as a partner, but I can't help but feel as though she fills the roll of his diabolic more than his wife. And I know she is a diabolic, so it makes sense she'd fall back into old habits. But I couldn't help but want more from her.
Going into Book 3, I'd really like Nemesis to explore herself and her true potential. I want to see her in all her badassery, saving the day left and right. I honestly don't know what's going to happen--but I look forward to finding out!

This book! I’ve read a lot of YA Fantasy this year, A Court of Thorns and Roses, Six of Crows, The Grishaverse, Gilded Cage, etc. Of those I’ve read, there have been very few I truly loved.
The Diabolic was one of those few. When I learned there was a second being released, in just a few short months nonetheless, I was really excited! So as soon as I was able, I began tearing through this one, obviously... and I was not disappointed!
The Empress picks up almost immediately where The Diabolic left off. Tyrus and Nemesis are engaged to be married. Tyrus is Emperor and his current standing is relatively weak among the Grandliloquy who do not share his love of the sciences or sympathy for the Excess (planet dwelling commoners). Senator von Pasus is the enemy here. He wants revenge for his daughter Elantra. He wants his place so close to the throne secured. And he will not allow a couple of crazy in love teenagers to stand in his way.
The action and drama here was non-stop. What I love about this book is that Kincaid is not afraid to push her characters to rock bottom. When they reach rock bottom, they learn rock bottom has a trap door, and they fall even further. I could not put it down. If this doesn’t qualify as a space opera, I really don’t know what else would.
Nothing was predictable. Some of the romantic bits I could have lived without but they weren’t enough to detract from the overall story and I didn’t find myself cringing at the romance.
I know the political and religious story arcs in this book were disliked by some readers, so I would like to add that these are a very large part of the book. It’s a political game for both characters as Tyrus tries to keep his throne and Nemesis tries to keep him safe, and a big part of those politics are the religion is this book, the worship of the Living Cosmos. I didn’t mind the scheming bits here one bit, but some might.
Overall, I think if you enjoyed The Diabolic you should give this one a try! I am already dying to read the third book and have a feeling it will be a long wait.

I honestly don't even know where to start with this book. It's been a long time, if ever, that I have felt betrayed as a reader and taken advantage of in a way I feel this book did to me.
I loved The Diabolic. Loved. It. In my written review for it, I even stated that I was disappointed when I realised it was a standalone because I would have loved just more of Nemesis and Tyrus, and the cut-throat sci-fi world they live in.
I'd like to just say here that you can 100% read The Diabolic as a standalone. And with all my feelings regarding what happened in The Empress, I wouldn't encourage anyone to read on past the first book.
I wasn't sure where The Empress was going to go but I did not expect what happened. Not in my wildest dreams. You know that bit in The Hunger Games when it's revealed Peeta is hijacked and the Peeta we loves seems to be gone? That feeling of despair, and heartbreak? Yeah, expect to feel all of that but it's even worse.
Now don't get me wrong here, the writing itself was good, the story seemed to be going okay for a while - if slightly dragged out with the discussions around Pasus and Devinee and then the journey to the Sacred City. But when Venolux was introduced and everything started to go rapidly downhill, I was just left in this state of shock. This book is depressing. And by that I mean, by the halfway point, I couldn't see any way out for the characters we fell in love with in The Diabolic, and continued to love so far in The Empress. It kind of felt like those scenes in the Titanic when all the metal hatches are being closed off, except Nemesis, Tyrus, and the readers were the ones left to drown in the engine room.
The book had felt quite slow up to this point as well, and suddenly with only about a quarter to go everything sped up to double speed and all the poo hit the fan. I was honestly left in a quivering wreck - I didn't know what was happening, who to trust, and I felt like crying in just pure frustration at the story unfolding before me.
On the plus side: Nemesis was wonderful as usual. I adored how she took care of Tyrus, her cute friendship with Gladdic (when she hugged him and said "there, there," my heart!) and just how strong she proved herself over and over.

It's extremely similar to Peeta's hijacking in The Hunger Games except at least with that, it was only aimed at Katniss and he seemed to still be his old self around other people. Tyrus was just not himself. The Tyrus we loved was gone. The Tyrus that showed Nemesis she could actually love someone other than Sidonia was gone. And how can he ever come back from what he's done? It actually left me feeling very hopeless.
And also everything that Neveni did. I understand that she is grieving her people,and her planet but a lot of what she did honestly just made no sense to me.
I just don't appreciate being used in the way I feel this story used me. Completely changing everything about a character's personality the way that happened in this one is just wrong. Particularly when it's a character who was such a positive and loved person in the first book.
