Those monsters that kept you up at night as a child, the ones that made you pull the covers up to your chin while you stared into the dark corners and saw shadows move. Or pulled the blankets over your head and imagined creatures inching across your bedroom. Well, they’re real. The Organization, as it’s called, is tasked with keeping the nightmares of myth and legend from invading the public eye. The group must be kept a secret along with the fact that the creatures exist. As civilization expands its boundaries, that undertaking becomes more difficult. A very few are selected to stand on the lines between humankind and the horrors lurking in the dark recesses of the world.Follow Jack Walker and Red Team as they’re pulled into the shadows to combat creatures that once kept them awake at night.

I AM SERIOUSLY HOOKED!!!

I've purchased this book when it came out then thought I'd work on all my zombie books I have going, then I read John O'Brien's "Lifting The Veil The FALLEN", which I loved so much almost more then I l9ve the series if the "ARES VIRUS", almost. So I decided to start this book, and all I can say, once I finished the first Chapter * was hooked. This is again another of John's great works and I am so ready to see where he goes with this as I LOVED IT.... Jack is awesome and his Red Team really ROCKS!!!! I know this is just a book "fiction", but DAMNED if it doesn't get you thinking. What could be out there that we dont know about. Just because we dont see it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. That is really something to think about, it can't hurt, as we've all heard things go bump in the night. The worst part of this books were the poor Cows that they needed to be staked in to the ground, I so got teary eyed, asked my husband if they have feelings, he said yes, all animals do, that made the tears even harder. I feel so bad for them, as I do, when we k8ved in Texas and went past slaughter houses, which they were on they way into. The tension, fear from them was awful. John you've put out some amazing books lately and al I can say,, please keep it up. 1st the ARES VIRUS, 2nd A New World Order, 3d Lifting the Veil:The Fallen, now this, you've got yourself a number one fan in me for sure. The first 3 I listed I love, ARES, was seriously awesome. Lifting the Veil, I am so in love with also. Now this book and I hope a bit of a series, I have another hero of your books, and that is Jack. Thank you so much,, from the bottom of my heart, I will never put off one of your books again. A must read for all.. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THEM!!!!!

Fabulous 'How it came to pass...' Tale!

I've been waiting to read more of John O'Brien 's excellent storytelling for a rather specific reason. I got into Tufo first, riding quite a ways into the world of his Uber Character, Mike. Then I saw the start of the crossover collaboration involving both Tufo and O'Brien's Uber male leads... and this I began to collect different novels within the various series. I opted to get to know the O'Brien side by grabbing up Red Team before launching into the big zom-poc collection. I am very happy I did! Does it require you to do the same? Nah! But, I would read some of each before trading into the Shrouded World. 😊 Anyways, no question was ever in my mind that is enjoy John's writing... Five stars and above!!! Eee gads, so many books to read!!!!! This is happiness in my life. Fellow readers, enjoy this writer's skillful spinnings, especially those who enjoy natural conversation and event unfolding as well as very accurate military explanation without making your head hurt if you are not, nor ever have been, in service. Thanks!

These monsters don't sparkle, flirt, or smoulder.
Finally, a book with real monsters and real soldiers. The Organization is the last best defense between the creatures of the night and the general population. Great story telling with well developed characters. Enough military speak to make it believable but not to completely put off the reader. A fine balance between wit and humor keeps the character dialog moving forward without eyerollingly obvious attempts at humor that some other authors use. Fast pace keeps the story moving and the different personalities in the Strigoi make for an interesting villain.
Warning: May cause a lack of sleep! Not quiet scary enough to keep me awake at night but enough to keep me turning the virtual pages until the book is over . . . no matter what the clock says about bedtimes and work the next day. I lose sleep now waiting for the next book.

Jack is Back!

I loved reading Mr. O'Brien's books. He is a very talented author who brings his characters to life. I have been missing Jack Walker, so this book that explained how he met his team was a fun adventure, full of action. The monsters were excellent and knowing red team took a serum given to them by the Stirgoi, makes me curious. Could Jack perhaps have survived the events in the final New World book? I know I would be on board for that! I enjoyed the book and look forward to more red team adventures, hopefully soon! If you haven't read any of John O'Brien's books, you are missing out! Read all of them, you will not be disappointed. Excellent story lines and plots, and his characters are so well developed you feel close to them and care about their outcomes.

I knew John O'Brien's writing from his Ares Virus series which I loved so this was a must read. Jack Walker and his group are tasked with destroying a group of Strigoi that are threatening a whole city. They are not vampires in the usual sense that you have read about. They have added horrific talents. The group assembled all have different personalities which adds to this story. This is definitely a character driven story and with O'Brien's way with words makes for a compelling action filled tale. I highly recommend this series and any other books by John O'Brien, you will not be disappointed.

Red Team is similar in structure and purpose to Jonathan Maberry’s Joe Ledger and the Department of Military Sciences team. Although I prefer Maberry and Ray Porter to almost anyone else, Red Team did deliver a decent performance. A bit of a flashback on how Jack met and joined Red Team. We find Jack and company dealing with the things that go bump in the night. Good characters, plenty of action and a decent story. What else could you want?

This book is fast paced as they try and seal the walls between nightmare and reality. I really liked the main character, Jack Walker. I hope that this isn't the only book in the series--it kind of felt like it jumped in the middle, which I enjoyed. O'Brien did a good job of making it feel like there was already a world that is created and Walker is a strong protagonist.

It's a fun read and I hope that there are more to follow.

Good first installment

This was a good introductory story. Started out strong, lost steam. I really liked the first third of the book a lot. The author did a good job in the first third but then the story became a bit choppy and the characters became a bit silly. The book ended ok.

Good read

I enjoyed the fast pace once the story got going. A little overly descriptive in places. Loved that Jack was the lead character again as the Chaos series is one of my favorites!!

Well written horror is hard to come by, this is one of the best. A different take on Vampires. Fast paced, heart-pounding excitement. The character development is excellent, as readers expect in a story written by John O’Brien. I highly recommend this book.

Bought the next book

Worth a read and I bought the next book so I could read more. A bit too much description of the fight scenes but the story line is good.
