A Bigfoot helping find a killer
Two-faced by James Hunter and Eden Hudson is a terrific fantasy about a Bigfoot princess, a detective, many strange creatures, an evil called Two-faced that is killing people, and so much more. It is exciting, lots of supernatural characters, suspense, fighting, humor, and friendship. I hope this will be a series!

Here's an urban fantasy thriller packed with excitement -- a twisty paranormal murder mystery, immediately lovable characters, laugh out loud dialogue, gripping & ripping action, a hell of a lot of fun, and a Sasquatch sized heart. And feet.
Winona Treesinger is a 'squatch, a bigfoot, one of the People of the Forest. But when a string of brutal and paranormal-ish murders rock a Montana town, she must venture out of the woods, shift into a woman, and get down to solvin' supernatural crimes. That's where the fun kicks in.
So much fun, indeed. That's my main reaction to the book -- it's really, really fun. It contains some grim elements in the murders -- just enough darkness to give the light a sense of balance -- but the fun factor totally wins out. Tonally, it kind of reminded of Stranger Things in that way. Exciting. Funny. Ridiculously entertaining and gripping. Did I already say fun? Cause yeah, that as well. Fun.
Winona is a wide-eyed wanderer who doesn't understand our world, and watching her try turns out to be really entertaining. The authors mine the setup well. I laughed out loud a bunch of times. Her deadpan observations and dialogue have an indirect wit to them, a subverted cleverness. But she's more than just a source for laughs. Her innocence and sincerity bring so much heart to the tale, and she possesses a real drive to make things right for the humans, a passion to the do the right thing that feels very pure.
She develops one key relationship along the way -- the place where the aforementioned 'squatch sized heart of the story lay -- but I don't want to spoil any of it. Guess you'll have to read it.
There's a really interesting balance of light and dark here. This is a story where the light shines brighter than the shadows, and though I've been a reader stuck on the grimmer side for a long time, I have realized recently that I like the light. It was fun. It made me feel good. It portrayed a version of the world I'd like to live in. Wait. Is this what Montana is really like?
A lot of my time is spent searching for art that speaks to me -- mostly of the literary variety. Well, eden Hudson's writing definitely does it. She's a great writer. I want more of it.

Fun!
Do you believe in Sasquatch aka Bigfoot? No? Well, after reading Two-Faced I’ve set my skepticism aside and let my imagination soar. Maybe, just maybe...
So we have a Bigfoot princess (bet you didn’t know there were Bigfoot princesses, learn something new everyday) named Winona Treesinger. One night as she’s patrolling the Bigfoot territory she happens over to the Inland which is the land of humans because she’s following the presence of an evil Outward being. She picks up the scent of blood, not a good thing. This is where the action starts. Right at the beginning of the story. Right here. Right now. No let up. No rest for the weary.
When our Bigfoot princess decides to follow this evil being further into human society she takes on human form. Because she knows she will never get their permission, she does this behind the backs of the Bigfoot elders and her father, Chief Chankoowashtay (say that 5 times in a row) or as I like to call him The Really BIG Bigfoot. She joins up with Detective Chris Fuller, who’s also hot on the trail of this creature that’s responsible for several human deaths in the area. What a team they make! I sometimes found myself chuckling through the mayhem and crime scenes. I know, right? You have to have been there.
I had so much fun reading this book. I loved the relationship and the banter between Winona (as she kept her hairy 8 foot real self hidden) and the Detective. Priceless.
Thanks to (new-to-me) author James A. Hunter and of course, eden Hudson, one of my fave authors EVER for this sometimes raunchy but always fun read. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. Please don’t make me wait too long! This book had 5 stars written all over it.

Note:
Even at 3+x narration speed, I couldn't make myself listen to the story. Nothing about the story grabbed my interest. I felt like I had to work hard for the hour I made myself listen to the audiobook. I started off at 2.5x speed and kept cranking it up. 1 hour of real time at 2.5-3.5x. Yah, it didn't work for me.

I enjoyed revisiting Winona, who we meet in the 3rd Yancy Lazarus book. It seems it picks up within a few months after Wendigo Rising, and Winona is feeling unsettled now that the immediate threat has passed. I wasn't sure what limits having a Sasquatch as a main character would be, but it turned out the authors had creative plans for that. The magic is more organic than in the the Yancy Laszarus books, and Winona is a much purer soul. I was completely charmed as a result. Same with her police detective co-star, Chris. Between the two, they kept the supernatural elements and the murder mystery fresh and entertaining, and the story was well paced.
The 2nd book isn't available in audio yet, but I liked it enough that I just may have to pick up the ebook so I don't have to wait for their next adventure.

Being a huge fan of James Hunter's Yancy Lazarus books, when I heard he was spinning the characters in his novel Wendigo Rising off into their own series, I was justifiably excited. When I heard the audio version was being narrated by one of my favorite narrators, Holly Adams, I was sold on the spot. After listening to it, I can tell you that my expectations were not only met, but exceeded in every way.
Winona Treesinger, princess of the Chiatonka (Sasquatches) near Missoula, Montana, is unhappy with her role in life. After the tribe was betrayed by one of its own, who happened to be her betrothed, Winona is upset at the Elder council's ruling that the Chiatonka must stay separate at all costs from the little brothers (humans). After she and her father helped Yancy Lazarus, human mage, defeat her betrothed and his evil human allies, Winona was convinced humans were unprepared for dealing with the supernatural, and that the Chiatonka should help, as they did in the past. This leads her to start patrolling outside their forest heart home, and where the trouble begins.
Coming across a trail of something foul, Winona follows the trail and comes across a police car. Seeing the police have followed the trail, she continues the chase and comes across Detective Chris Fuller as he fights for his life against some unknown supernatural entity. Winona charges in to save him, and fights the creature to a stand still, taking many wounds herself. The creature escapes, and Winona brings Chris to her village, against the rules as that may be, and treats him. Being chastised for it by the Elders, she is told to erase his memory and return him to the human world. Defying this edict, she steals a talisman that will allow her to change shape into a human and goes back with Chris to help hunt the monster.
As Winona helps Chris in the guise of a native American shaman psychic, people all over town are turning up dead. As they investigate, a disturbing pattern emerges as to the motive behind the murders, and to the nature of the creature committing them. The victims may not be so innocent after all, and the killer may be more than it seems. As the chase continues, it also comes closer and closer to Chris's life, and violently intrudes on the life he has made for himself in Missoula. This all leads to the climactic final scene where Winona and Chris face off against a monster that may not have been the crazed killing machine they expected it to be. Can Winona stop the monster and find redemption with her clan? Well, you need to read or listen to it to find out!
Like all of James Hunter's books, and now with Eden Hudson, this is a very character driven story. Winona and Chris are excellent protagonists, playing well off of each other, especially as their cultures are so very different. Their species are so different in the way they look at life, its amazing they can work together at all, but they did, quite effectively. The politics of Chris's office, reeling from the revelations in Wendigo Rising, where the police were involved in the crimes of Winona's betrothed and his human accomplices, makes it a volatile environment, especially as Winona is no cop, but he needs her help to find the killer. The side characters are well written and feel like real people you would meet in everyday life. Even the antagonist has motivations that will surprise. The setting is well described, and you get a real feeling of being in the scene. Definitely strong worldbuilding.
The narration was handled by one of my favorite narrators, Holly Adams. She is such a talented voice actress, being able to do a huge variety of voices and accents. She has excellent pacing, and her narration never lags or bogs down in a monotone. She adds gravitas to Winona especially, and this may be my favorite character she has ever voiced. I can't recommend the audio version enough. In fact, any fan of urban fantasy should run out and get a copy of Two Faced now.

This book, surprised the heck out of me, it was just not what I was I was expecting, I am not sure what it was I was expecting but this this book blew past those expectations and I can honestly say that I loved every minute of the adventure that this book brings.
Being Scottish I was brought up with all the mystical legends and old histories so i have always lived mythology, not just Celtic but all mythology, however in books you seem to alwsys have the same pantheon coming up time and time again so reading this story was so refreshing for me, plus i have always had a kinship for the Native American legends so i am sure that this helped me love this book even more! Another thing i loved about this element was that the way the histories and legends are described in this book, it means that readers can have no previous knowledge of the mythology and still fully understand it plus they are learning about a new culture. I adored the imaginative and vivid writing in this story and I am super impressed with this author, I want to read more!!! There is so much excitement, action and unknown quantities, its so so addictive, you can't stop turning pages and that is right from the beginning!!!!
I loved reading about Winona! She has such a beautiful soul, everything about her shouts healer and peace giver although she is capable of so much destruction, her character is so unique and I loved that I never read about any other character like her, especially the strong female lead character. I love her protectiveness to others weaker than herself, her willingness to put herself in harm to save others, her loyalty and her need to do the right thing even when it angers her own people. Chris is another brilliant character, one with determination and grit, a loyal man who will do anything for those he loves. He has a major sense of right and wrong and believes in the law but not in those who break the rules, especially other cops. I love both of these characters and would love to read more about them!!!

I adored this lighthearted Urban-Fantasy! The authors managed to blend this fantasy with the macabre making this a unique tale! It's the story of Winona Treesinger, a young Sasquach and her coming-of-age story! (I love all the Cryptids beings btw!) Anyway, only Winona seemingly sees the danger when she notices that something dark has managed to slip between realms and start a killing spree! Without the blessings of her tribe she teams up with a human cop Detective Chris Fuller. He's determined to lose her because she's a civilian [magic makes her appear human] , and she's equally determined to stay close to him [she knows the very real danger he'll be in, and she wants to protect him] as they face the evil that has entered their world... and well, magic happens! You'll see just get the book!
"I speak as you do"
"No" Detective Fuller said, a hint of teasing creeping into his tone. "You speak like a fairy princess' in a fantasy or like Data in Deep Space 9, which I guess would technically make you an android not an alien, the point is I haven't heard you use a single contraction yet"
I find this quote even more hilarious, because Chris knew who Data was, but forgot which Star Trek series he was from! And as far as contractions are concerned, well I've actually wondered if English is a second language when authors choose to not use 'em!
"Thank you for the coffee" I said picking it up. A wisp of steam drifted from it's inky black surface, curled into my nostrils like a half burnt tentical of asphalt."
I'm definitely affronted by any coffee that's set on the burner! So this to me is a perfect description of coffee gone bad!
And Holly Adams... just Wow! Her nuanced performance was sublime, and her Two-Faced voice made my skin crawl... Eeewwwe!

This is the first Hunter story I've read that didn't take three or four books to get good. Maybe that's cheating because it's a spin-off from his main series, but still. I liked the way Winoa was written as intelligent, highly knowledgeable and dignified despite being an eight foot tall Sasquatch and basically an alien. I especially appreciated that the author mostly refrained from using the fact that she was female and basically a big hairy monster as a source of humor. Hunter has been tone deaf about gender and sexuality stuff before, so it's good that he got it right this time.
Also for once he managed to go an entire book without using the phrase "ass over teakettle."

Winona Treesinger is a Bigfoot Princess who works on side of light to defeat the side of dark. She meets Detective Chris as she is tracking an evil presence. Will they become friends or will her monstrous true form turn him away. She returns to the world of humans in the form of a woman. Her wonder at experiencing the wonders of the human world make for entertaining scenes as reflected in Chris's reactions to her naivety. Having attended UM in Missoula, I was pleased by the setting. I recognized many locations referenced in the story. I like the action, humor, and developing friendships. I look forward to the next book.

Who knew Winona would like country music? This is just one of the things we find out about her, it is also one of the things she learns while working alongside Detective Chris Fuller. After she rescues him, Winona and Chris team up to take on the formidable Anukite. However eventually Winona must return home to her people. Hopefully Winona and Chris will ride out on another adventure soon.

Winona Treesinger is a Bigfoot, a Sasquatch what have you. Her people have recently been betrayed by one of their own allied with a human. So her father and the elders have proclaimed the people must stay away from humanity.
But in her wanderings Winona has discovered that an evil being from Otherworld has been murdering humans.
One of the people's responsibilities is to protect their land and those who live within it, including humans. Winona takes that responsibility seriously

This was a spur of the moment buy at DragonCon and I am beyond pleased. I was engrossed the entire time, full immersed in the story. The characters have great depth and experiencing Winona and Chris’s relationship develop raised my anticipation for the next book. This is great example of modern fantasy and is really fresh take.

An interesting spinoff
Not quite my thing, but it was interesting to read more about a memorable character from the Yancy Lazarus books. It’s definitely not a bad book, just not what I was expecting.

Awesome
I was startled by the images that this story brought to my mind.... at first. I then became totally immersed in the adventure. I hope new books are on the way featuring Winona.

Charming
James Hunter is a great author. This series is a spin off of the Yancy Lazarus series which I love. This one promised to be almost as good.
