Update Feb. 2014: I downgraded my rating slightly on this book because after taping and mudding our basement for the last few months I found this book was missing something kind of important; there is almost no discussion of different types of drywall mud and the problems you can have in different conditions. Doing a large job over a fairly long time span under different conditions (warm, cold, etc) gives rise to interesting issues with the mud and getting a nice finish. I found a lot of answers by consulting on line forums and blogs but I think a chapter on the chemistry and properties of drywall compound would have been an important addition.
September 2011: I enjoyed this book. The style of the author is comfortable to read and engaging. He has enough personal info in there that you can actually believe he learned to do drywalling by trial and error. He also has enough technical info in there that you can feel confident to at least give it a whirl. Like any craft, or hobby, or DIY project, it is largely a matter of how patient and determined the student is that determines the results. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to try finishing their own drywall. But, start in a place where no one is going to be doing close inspections. Like my laundry room....if you want to come and do some laundry at my place and inspect where I learned to do mudding and taping....come on over :-) There is always a lot of laundry to catch up on!
This book has photos and guides to putting drywall in a variety of places and working through several difficult drywall problems. If you're a do it yourself type, it would be helpful, but only with odd problems or if you're new to drywalling.
