"Unique and captivating...gritty and horrifying...well worth the read." ( Portland Book Review )

If you liked The Northern Star trilogy, Mike Gullickson brings the same great storytelling style and action to bear. This time the Earth's environment is seeded with alien life that rapidly takes over, putting all terrestrial life in jeopardy. This is a survival story told from the viewpoint of a very capable young lady named Kacey. The action quickly ramps up as Kacey gathers local survivors to make a run for safety.
I like Mike Gullickson's writing and storytelling style so I am biased but I thought this was a good read. While this is categorized as Young Adult it should appeal to anyone.
If there is one thing I'm sure about, when it comes to Mike Gullickson...is that he flat out knows how to write action. After reading his debut trilogy "The Northern Star" I was looking forward to another action packed story, and I got what I wanted out of it.
We follow high school senior Kacey and she's thrown into a battle for humankind while also trying to navigate all the same things young adults battle every day. From relationships with parents, to fellow students (both friend and foe) to the animals she cares for outside of school. The character is well constructed and you find yourself caring quite a bit for her. The other characters are well done and varied. The high school jock, the kid that looks 'different' so is treated as an outcast, the abusive father...are all present among others.
The story line itself is about what you'd expect from a Sci-Fi horror story. However, Gullickson's originality stands out here and introduces many different beings and creatures that are not fully explained, but just enough to make it a bit creepy. The detail is what really makes the world real to the reader.
The action is the star of this story though. Just enough to make you want more but not so much it feels forced. It's hard to put down the book and I found myself reading much longer than I had intended just to find out what happened next. Just superb action writing.
Overall, any lover of action, young adult Sci-Fi stories , Sci-Fi stories in general or just anyone that flat out likes great storytelling would enjoy this book. Definitely check it out.
