Long before European explorers ventured across the ocean to settle in the American colonies, a legend of a strange creature may have already been brewing. Indications have been found that early Native Americans may have seen a dragon-like creature along the Delaware River in parts of what is now New Jersey and Pennsylvania. When Europeans arrived and settled in the swampy, pine forests of south central New Jersey, they encountered a strange, flying concoction of a half-dozen other creatures melded together as one. Was it the hellish offspring of a Leeds family member, the result of a political-religious conflict, a long lost dinosaur, or a supernatural entity born out of the fiery blast of an iron furnace? The author attempts to make sense of 300 historic years of Jersey Devil terror.
