(Governor Trilogy - Book 2, mmf, political romance)
I never come in second—that’s just how my daddy raised me.
Except now, I find myself willingly choosing exactly that—being second. Publicly, I might seem to serve at the governor’s pleasure, but that’s nothing close to the truth.
He serves me at mine. Especially the pleasure part.
We both serve my husband, Carter. Or, as Owen dubbed him long ago, the bastard extraordinaire.
I never knew what I was really getting into when I met Owen and Carter. Maybe it’s better I didn’t. Maybe I would’ve run away if I had.
Boy, how I love him. Both of them. Somehow, they make being second okay. And in eight years?
It’ll be my turn.
I am Susa Evans, lieutenant governor of the great state of Florida.
Lesli Richardson is the writer behind the curtain of her better-known and more prolific USA Today Bestselling Author pen name, Tymber Dalton (her "wild child" side). She lives in the Tampa Bay region of Florida with her spouse and too many pets of various species. When she's not playing D&D with her friends or shooting skeet, she's a part-time Viking shield-maiden in training, among other pursuits. The two-time EPIC award winner is also the author of over two hundred and fifty books and counting.
She lives in her own little world, but it's okay, because they all know her there.
She also loves to hear from readers! Please check out her website for links, and to sign up for updates to keep abreast of the latest news, snarkage, and releases. There you'll also find reading order lists, and more information about her different series.
Susa Evans: I want more. I want it all. I want him, and Owen.
This is Susa's turn to tell the story and what an amazing story she has to tell. Susa fell in love with Carter the moment she saw him for the first time. She is an ambitious, strong, clever girl who does not hesitate to admit that she wants it all. She wants success, she wants personal happiness, she wants to distinguish her name from her father’s legacy in politics. She is ready to pave her own path and no one will stop her. She is lucky in a way because she finds Carter and Owen. Carter will own her and she will own Owen. Carter will make her his slave and as a result she will be free. To chase her dream. Before she realises what is happening, she will be married to a man almost 10 years older than her and she will find two comrades in her dreams.
He leans in, cups the back of my neck, and slants a world-shattering, possessive, hungry kiss across my lips that I try to chase when he pulls back. He stops me with a finger to my lips and that smirk. “My very good girl,” he whispers. “We’re going to do great things, the three of us.”
Susa has grown up as a very happy girl in a family that offered her whatever she wanted. Love, security, money, social acceptance. A little princess on the making. But she was tougher than she looked. She just needed someone who could understand her. Carter will totally get her. He knows what she wants and he is enough bastard to let her have it. A large portion of this book takes place in the present. Owen is the Governor and her sweet boy, Carter is her husband and her protector and owner and Susa is trying to make Owen re-elected and become a mother. Tragic events will keep them away and let me say here that the book includes one of the most believable description of a plane crash that I have ever read. I was literally chewing my nails for the second part of the book trying to see how this disaster would play out. I was very happy that Susa becomes the main character in this book and nobody steals her show. She is a true Queen!
Unfortunately I still never connected with Susa and this is still a love triangle to me. While there IS clearly love between all three of them and you really do see it more in this than the first book, I can’t help but feel for Owen. When is HE going to be put first? I really wish this was just a MM series.
I think it’s just a me issue with this trilogy. It’s not poorly written by any means and there are tons of 5 star reviews.
The spice is tamer in this one, and there’s more of a story but it didn’t really grab my attention until the last 35%. The ordeal that Susa went through and the anticipation of what was going to happen was a welcome distraction. The rest was just too much politically and BDSM themed for my liking.
If the 3rd book was available on scribd I’d probably finish it simply because I’ve already read these first 2 and I’m sure Carter’s book will be the most interesting, but I’m not compelled enough to actually buy it 🤷🏻♀️
In this 2nd book of the Governor Trilogy, we mostly get the POV of Susa. She explains the mechanics of how Carter's mind works and how he and Susa got together - It was simple: Carter loved Owen, Owen loved Susa, and Susa loved Carter. Both Susa and Owen became submissive to Carter and Susa could also top Owen. There were enough feelings for Owen by Susa to agree with Carter that the relationship of the three could blossom and turn into a real triad. Carter's #1 rule was also simple: Owen comes first. His master plan was for Owen to become Governor, and Susa to become Governor after Owen's 2 terms were up. That way they could change Florida for the better- they could help people. In this book Ms. Richardson was able to communicate all the feelings and the progression of the relationships among the three. She also threw in a few surprises- BIG surprises which had my heart palpitating, and yet I was unable to put my Kindle down. I cannot wait until we hear from Carter in the final book of the trilogy.
If I thought the first book was well written in this series, this second one blew me apart. Since I first read the book, I've re-read this over again about five times. This book should not be read as a standalone. Whilst it theoretically can read by itself, to receive the full effect, the first book, The Governor is recommended. This story focuses on Susa and her drive to become a Governor.
This book starts off where it left off in the previous book. In the same writing pattern, there are flashes to the past. It gives a different view of the same scenes which makes this trilogy richer. I like the layers and learning about past events from another set of eyes. It gives a more balance perspective. And if there is one thing I love, is to have things balanced and fair.
I expected this story to feature Susa's time campaigning to be the next governor and her current job as the lieutenant governor. I expected back stabbing and political shenanigans. Maybe some blackmailing and attacks against and by the media. What I did not expect was for a death-defying event. I'm not going to spoil what happens, but suffice to say, what happened to Susa is incredible and all too realistic. As a person who travels a lot and overseas, this is very real possibility to happen to Susa. The modes of transportation in some countries is very sketchy. All I can say is that those with a will to survive and who are calm under pressure will have a higher chance to make it.
The turmoil and fear in this story is well done. It dances on the fine line between hysterical meltdown and manic optimism. The story is told from both the lost and the searchers. I am not sure how Ms. Richardson did her research to create such a great tension and scene. It is a page turner for me and the scenes lasted just the right amount. I loved how much this book made me feel. It makes me appreciate life and want to hug my loved ones right after I read it.
This page turner is highly recommended to menage romance readers.
Had to DNF at 22%. How many times does one person need to be told by their husband that he doesn't love her like that? All Carter has said to his wife is that Owen comes first and that all he's done is for Owen. OPEN YOUR EYES, GIRL!!! Susa has even said that when Owen and Carter are intimate he's more vulnerable with him, more sweet and he's never like that with her. Like, put two and two together and dip, babe. Again with the whole baby situation where Carter made that decision on his own and just told people how it was gonna be, like Susa has no goals or ambitions. Look, bye, I can't anymore.
I love this series. Loved the triple POV. Gripping storyline and love the deeper dive in American politics. Much discussion on how dirty campaigning is, and which parties are in bed with who. MMF is my favorite type of smut read. Can wait to continue this series.
I'm trying to take this book at face value, and just enjoy it for what it is, but it's hard. This book looks at the past and takes the triad into the next governor term. The current aspect is fine and while there is an interesting path that Susa takes to get to reelection for her second term as Lieutenant Gov, I really felt like not much happened aside from her ordeal. The book ends with the triad having been together for 20 years, and starting Owen's second term as Gov.
What really really bothered me about this book was the whole web of lies and betrayal that Carter wove with Susa willingly going along with it from the start.
I really struggle reviewing this one. I absolutely love this series and Owen and Carter, but I cannot stand Susa and as a result this book was just not a pleasant experience for me. I see myself re-reading this trilogy over and over again in the future and I have a feeling that when I do I will be mostly skimming through this one. I’ll be honest, even though I knew it was unlikely, I spent most of the middle of this book hoping that they wouldn’t find her. I’m also furious that she is so motherfucking selfish that she puts her own political ambitions over Owen’s ability to PUBLICLY CLAIM HIS OWN SON. No getting to pick the name is not fucking enough. If they do not figure out a way to make that right in Carter’s book, it may change my whole opinion of this series. I honestly do not remember the last time I have hated a character who was supposed to be a protagonist this much.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I didn't love Susa. I thought she was hard to understand in some ways and a little boring in others. I did however find her surviving the accident to be really harrowing. I think in a lot of ways, I was just waiting for the Carter book, because there was so much hidden subtext that wasn't clarified by this book.
The Governor Trilogy, Book 2. Breathtaking and awesome…perfect in every way!
SPOILER ALERT: IT’S ESSENTIAL THAT THIS SERIES BE READ IN ORDER. THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SLIGHT SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T READ GOVERNOR (BOOK 1). As with Governor, I can’t summarize this book and do it justice. There are blurbs on all sellers’ websites. Several chapters of Governor (Book 1) are available for free on Ms. Richardson’s Tymber Dalton website. I’m going to TRY to tell you how this book made me feel and how it totally blew me away.
As with Governor, this may seem like a simple political romance story. I guarantee you, it’s far more! This is Susannah Evans’ story. And, as much as you might think it’s a repetition of Governor from Susa’s point of view, you’d be VERY wrong. This story is all Susa…her beauty, unique spirit, driving ambition, what made her who she is, and why. It’s also the story of how Susa meets Carter Wilson and Owen Taylor. As much as the first book focused on Owen and how Susa and Carter flipped his world upside down, Lieutenant is about how Susa meets Carter and Owen, how her world tilts on its axis, how her life is never the same. This story is every bit as riveting as Governor. Lesli Richardson crafts characters so rich and complex, woven into a storyline that’s simultaneously simple yet labyrinthine. That sounds impossible. Believe me, it’s not. It’s remarkable that some of the characters I passionately hated in Governor are presented in a whole new light in Lieutenant. Are they still the same people? Yes. Did they still make me angry, outraged, and furious? Maybe. You learn so much more in this book, and not just about Susa. I felt such pain and joy at Owen’s experiences in Governor. But I fell in love with him all over with Susa’s telling of her story. And this is HER story. Again, it’s not just a retelling of Owen’s story from Susa’s standpoint. The emotions in this book are a roller coaster. Attraction, expectation, hope, amazement, ambition, power, joy, love, hate, submission, and dominance all exist side-by-side. And there are more emotions I just don’t have words for. Again, this story wouldn’t exist without the presence of Carter and Owen. As Owen was the heart of Governor, so too is Susa the heart of Lieutenant. But without Carter and Owen, this book would have no soul. It simply wouldn’t work. These two books together comprise the most powerful story I may have ever read. That’s no exaggeration. I don’t have the words to express the power of this story and what it made me feel. Susa, Owen, and Carter are spellbinding! Just like Governor, this book pulled me in so quickly and deeply, I was lost in seconds. I can’t overstate just how powerfully captivating this book is. Lesli Richardson has again written Lieutenant from a first-person point of view. That she pulled this off with such perfection in Governor was impressive. I’m astounded that she did it again. It’s utterly flawless! The emotions are overwhelming, the relationships incredibly complicated, convoluted. The political machinations would make Machiavelli proud. Lieutenant and Governor are quite possibly the most impressive books I’ve ever read. I wasn’t sure Ms. Richardson could equal, must less top, Governor. She’s done both. As I said about Governor, I wish there was some special rating I could give this. No five-star rating system can do this book justice. In fact, no simple review can do it justice. You simply HAVE to read both these books. Congratulations, Ms. Richardson! I adored this!
A final note. This is an ADULT book. It contains explicit language, sexual scenes, and BDSM themes. If you don't enjoy this genre, this may not be the book for you. There are synopses and reviews available on Goodreads and all booksellers' websites. Use them. DON'T LEAVE A NEGATIVE REVIEW WHEN YOU KNOW YOU WON'T ENJOY THE BOOK. It's not fair to the author. She works hard to provide a quality work product. If you know you'll object to a book's subject matter before you buy it, you're doing yourself and the author an extreme disservice.
This book BLEW ME AWAY! It picks up where Governor left off and you should read it first otherwise you will miss this triads backstory and major plot points. From her introduction, we know Susa is a strong woman who is not afraid to go after what she wants. Meeting Carter and Owen has helped her achieve some of her dreams as well as give her the love and stability to keep her going when things get tough. Susa's courage and grit make this a book that I could not put down! It is a roller coaster ride that I didn't want to end! Can't wait for Chief!
This is Susa's story, carrying on from when Owen gains the Governorship, with Susa as his Lieutenant. We get a fair bit of back-story into why Susa is so politically ambitious (with a rather arrogant father in the backgound), & how she was manoeuvered by Carter into protecting (& loving) Owen. There was that point in the story when Carter reveals something he'd kept quiet/lied about, that Owen almost broke; & which I wish had never to happen. But Owen proves strong enough (thank goodness) to carry on.
Although that gets really intense in the second half of the story. Not knowing anything about what's happened to Susa (though we get to see how she does), both Carter & Owen are on the edge of complete breakdown.
I'm dropping a star for this one because I find I'm not quite happy with Susa & her overwhelming ambition to be Governor (& then something else later on). Although she comes to accept Carter's determination to protect & cherish Owen, I never really get the feeling that she loves Owen as much as she does Carter. And the (horror) story in the last part of the book seems a little drawn out. Still quite engrossing btw :)
If I could give this book 10/10 I would. It’s literally unputdownable. Loved reading Susas’ take on scenes from the governor. How will I get through the next week until Carters story???
Lieutenant is the second book in Lesli Richardson's new series, The Governor Trilogy. Ill admit that when she anounced this series, my response was "meh". I love the series she writes as Tymber Dalton, The Suncoast Society and this is more of a mainstream book. But am I ever glad that I went ahead and read them. This book rivals her Suncoast Society book, The Reluctant Dom.
The book focuses around a polyamorus triad with political asperations. The meet at college and the three become fast friends and a poly triad. Their love is so deep, I could literally feel it through the pages. Susa Edwards has always had political asperations. She plans to be governor but she isn't planning on riding her famous father, Senator Benchley Evans, coattails. Sure, she'll use him to get her cut in the did but she's more than capable of doing things on her own.
You need to read this book. Start with "Governor" and then move on to " Lieutenant and end with Chief.
Okay, this is going to be a short review because if I try to say to much, it will have spoilers in it. I will say that you NEED to read Governor first. Lieutenant is the second book with the third coming shortly. They must be read in order. This book was so hot. I"m glad I don't have to worry about reading this at work or anything because I would be having to look around to make sure no one was wondering what I was reading. Again, like Governor, I would have never thought I would enjoy a book that was political in nature but this book hit all the notes for me. Now, off to read the last book in the series!
In this the second book in the trilogy, we get the story from Susa's perspective. This book was as good as the first if not better. I couldn't stop reading this book. Even though it gives the story from Susa's pov, it is not just retelling the same story. I love that Susa's emotion and energy come through. Can't wait for the next.
If you haven't read Governor, go back and read that one first, before starting Lieutenant! The Governor Trilogy isn't a standalone, and should be read in order... thus this review is a little bit the continuation of the one I left on the first book.
In Book 2, we get Susa's perspective. While it shades some extra light over the early events in the triads, by adding details and events Owen's wasn't privy of. It mostly covers Owen & Susa's first term as Governor and Lieutenant-Governor. It is not a rehashing of the same story ;)
And get your seat belt fastened and hang in there, because the suspense is nail biting in this one ( no spoilers... I let you read, but I'll admit that Susa's misadventures cost me a few nails)
I have never had a book that evokes such anger, frustration, love, and happiness. I still have such conflicting feelings about Susa, but I will always love Owen because he deserves the world. I just need Carter and Susa to give it to him.
Initially, I had no interest in reading Susa’s POV but I’m so hooked on Carter and Owen, I had to see how this series ends. I was hoping to gain insight into Susa’s personality and I’m glad I stuck with it because I’m 100% #teamSusa now. I really do like her and I swear reading about this poly triad is addicting! I wasn’t expecting the plot to veer off into romantic suspense territory, but I was pleasantly surprised by how Ms. Richardson brought it all to a satisfying conclusion. It’s difficult incorporating flashback scenes and making them effortless, but here, the author succeeds. I’m truly thrilled to continue my 2020 reading streak with this fantastically kinky series. Can’t wait to dive into Chief!
I had a hard time making myself finish this one. I just didn’t want to. I finally buckled down and did it so I could get to Carters book. God I love carter. I really have no love for Susa - glad she made it, but I feel like Owen and Carter would have had a much better happier life had they not had her in it. I just think she is so selfish and I can’t like her hahah. Owen - totally love him. Carter - love to hate and love him. He would do anything for his boy.
This book really disappointed me. I hoped it would show that Owen had not started a relationship with two selfish people, but this book didn't contradict that notion at all. Susa and Carter are still selfish and don't alow Owen to publicly claim them in ways it would be possible.
Having just finished Lieutenant, the second book in Leslie Richardson's Governor trilogy, my emotions are a jumble. Book one's depth and Owen's introspection gripped me, even as I questioned Carter and Susan's motivations. The theme of choice in their unconventional relationship resonated, yet personally, I'd feel manipulated and betrayed in Owen's shoes.
Now, Lieutenant offers Susan's perspective as she becomes Lieutenant Governor. The narrative shifts between past and present, revealing previously unknown details. While I comprehend their connection, I can't condone their choices despite love. The book takes an unexpected turn with a dramatic accident involving Susan, creating an intense situation that, for a political romance, felt far-fetched and misplaced.
My emotions are a whirlwind, especially concerning Owen, who seems like a pawn in Carter and Susan's dynamics. Despite their BDSM and triad relationship, their reasoning feels questionable. Yet, the writing is strong, the storyline compelling, and I remained invested and engaged. I look forward to Carter's perspective in Chief.
In considering a rating, I'd deduct one star solely for the misplaced dramatic twist. While well-executed, it made the book feel like a telenovela. Hence, Lieutenant receives four stars in my book. Despite my reservations, the story's grip and emotional investment prevail.
SO GOOD!!! Easily 4.5-4.75 stars. I loved how this book was from multiple POVs (though mostly from Susa’s). I also really loved that we got to see the “behind the scenes” parts of their relationship developing, and get a much deeper understanding of what Carter was thinking & doing & planning with Susa behind poor Owen’s back. It was still manipulative, but seemed much less underhanded & wit more clear, loving intentions & ultimately, always with Owen’s best interests at heart.
I 100% did NOT see the whole emotional rollercoaster drama thing coming. At all. Whoo boy, did I cry. I was really worried that this book was going to end up breaking my heart like the new Camelot/American Princess series did (which I ended up stopping around 1/2 way through because I couldn’t deal with the heartbreak & backstabbing anymore).
Nervous but excited to see what happens in the next book & very curious if/when we’re going to circle back to that character who used to go camping with Susa as a teenager & that mysterious gunshot….
===SPOILER ALERT (dont read if you do not want even slightly spoiler===
I have to admit, Susa's story didnt speak to me as LOUD as Owen's and Carter's, but that doesnt mean her story was a bad one. On the contrary , it is very real, very well written. I simply LOVE Owen and Carter too much (Major fangirl ! ) Sometimes it is not easy to read through one book of the series that you feel less emotional related. However, this book is one of the keys into the next spin off of the series. I really love how Lesli gave every character one book to let us know how and what they were thinking. We get to see more of the character fm different angle and aspect, which is very fascinated. While reading this book, you will feel like you are one of their closed friends and you care so much about them that you literally cry with them for the difficult moments and excited for them in the happy moments. Lesli did such a wonderful job taking us this journey with the triad. I sincerely love this book !
Although this was more enjoyable than the first book I can’t give it a higher fairing because it lacked a lot of the smut/kink from the first book. I actually did enjoy getting to learn more about Susa (still a stupid fckn nickname) but I still don’t really care about her as a character maybe because my life experience is so so different from hers. Again there was too much politics for my taste but given where the characters are in their lives that makes sense because who has time to do a whole scene after a grueling workday in their 40s.
The author didn’t have me intrigued with that reporter who has a spin-off, a tiny bit with the consultant who may or may not have been SA (and what’s implied with that) but GEORGE! Ok I knew I KNEW he would matter. Might give that one a shot after this depends on how the female character in that triad is portrayed because I don’t really GAF about Susa and I don’t see that changing in the next book.
This was what I wanted it to be. I had a hard time connecting to Susa in the first book, but this helped me know her better. She fell in love with Carter first and grew to love Owen just as much. It takes place now and goes back and forth in the past to see scenes from her POV. It’s not a complete retelling of the first book, but we do get to see what Carter and her were up to when Owen wasn’t around. Their relationship started much sooner than I thought and she wasn’t as robotic as she seemed in the first book. She goes through a great trauma in this book that takes up a good 1/3 of the story and I don’t think it really had to be there personally as you couldn’t get a closer relationship than what these 3 have. Can’t wait to see what happens in Chief to see how Carter became the bastard extrodinaire.
This is book two in the Governor Trilogy. When I first started reading it, I thought it was going to retell Governor but from Susa's POV. It does and it doesn't. It does retell part of the Governor from her POV, but it's summarized and not a blow by blow. It then goes past that. Far past that. We really get to know Susa and how she came to be owned by Carter and own Owen at the same time. We learn why she did it. It's absolutely amazing.
Lesli has me in tears, laughing, cheering, and swooning all at once. She has created such an amazing world and I'm sooooo ready to dive into Chief. I can't wait to get more about Carter. Maybe I'll finally find out what happened in Germany! I'm dying to know.....
As with the first book, this one grabs hold of you emotionally, sucks you in and pulls you along on the journey with Owen, Carter, and Susa. From college days through the present and told generally from Susa’s point of view and as with Governor, this is deeply emotionally intense. It’s a beautiful, passionate love story between three people that is not without pain and bumps in the road and unexpected situations arising. They live and love and work, together united strong in their loyalty and devotion to one another. I loved learning more from the college days not told in Owen’s book, more of the love that’s there and other things and cannot wait for Carter’s book!
Lieutenant brings you back into the lives of Owen, Cater and Susa. Only this time you're seeing what happened then and now from Susa's POV. Only after disaster strikes do you see what is happening in the POVs from Carter and Owen.
Lesli Richarson brings the uconventional to the fore front and makes you cheer. At the same time, there are moments of anger and slight hatred toward Carter and Susa; how at times it seems Owen is not really at the center as he's portrayed. Richardson is a master at evoking emotion, and through it all the love this poly triad share is powerful and inspiring. Be prepared for the unexpected, to sigh, laugh, cry and smile.
This one was so much better than the first one. I loved Susa she was amazing. In the first book I didn’t really buy into the triad outside of sex, because everything was Owen centric and that Carter only loved Susa as an extension of his love for Owen. This book proved to me otherwise and showed just how much love Carter has for Susa, especially over the years.
This book made me feel so many emotions from happiness to saddens. I don’t think any installment can top this one.
My only complaint is that this book didn’t really explore the darker side of Susa and Carter’s kink. Wish there was some detailed scenes to understand how their one on one time differed from their scenes with Owen. I still maintain that Susa deserved better than Carter. I don’t like how he treated her in the beginning of their relationship.
