Soulless eyes of children stare into yours, opening the gateway to hell…
Months have passed since the Malpas Massacre, and the media is in the midst of a feeding frenzy. Reporters and law enforcement are certain the murders can be traced to a cold-blooded serial killer. But those who have survived the carnage know the truth all too well. As the victims become suspects, they find themselves in a race against time to clear their names.
Meanwhile, the peaceful town of Machen is hiding secrets darker than the eerie forest surrounding it. Vulnerable and wide-eyed children roam, pleading for help. Yet, behind their innocent façade lies a resurrected evil with an insatiable thirst for blood.
Led by Doctor Zoffany and Ted Gould, the Romola Foundation won’t let that happen. They’re certain that their extensive tests on Machen’s supernatural forces will lead them to much needed answers. At the heart of it all is Denny Purcell, who slowly discovers that her intuition is more powerful than she could have ever imagined.
As the night fills with predators, the mists of Machen lift to unveil hideous truths about its past. The whole town is on edge, and residents must face the violent souls that crave death and destruction.
The quiet town will quickly learn that some secrets are better left untold…
I was pleasantly surprised when I listened to book 1 of this series because it was better than I expected, and because of that I went into this one with high expectations, and I'm thrilled because this one was even better than the first!
The plot of this one shows us more about the Interlopers and the world they have come from. They are smart, cunning and incredibly strong and it was great to get more information on them. The plot was also fast paced and really exciting. I was listening to this as often as I could to see what would happen next. It's the kind of plot that takes a bit of concentration because there's a lot going on, but it was fascinating and entertaining. I'm eager to see what the Interlopers world brings us next!
We meet some new and interesting characters as well as finding out about some of the ones from book 1. I'm intrigued to see about the agency and what exactly their goal is!!
In all, this was a great read! It's not a stand alone so you will have to read the first to truly understand the overall plot. I can't wait for the third and final book in the trilogy to come to audio!!
Once again, Thom Bowers breathes life into this authors story. He is quickly becoming a favourite narrator of mine! He is easy to listen to and has an array of tones and voices for each character.
I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
This second Book of the Nightmare series continues the saga begun with Book One. Denny Purcel, the journalist, is convinced there is much more to the story of what's happening in Machen than meets the eye. Children have disappeared and then come back, but different than before. Horrific things keep happening to residents of the area and evidence points to these "strange" children. Denny decides to return to the eerie world she discovered in the first book, convinced that the missing children, and her friends, are somehow imprisoned within this mysterious realm. The author holds little back when it comes to descriptions of brutal violence. Some of the scenes in the book are downright gruesome, but actually add to the overall effect of the book. Thom Bowers' narration in the Audible.com version of this book enhances the creepiness a great deal. I enjoyed the book, and the narration, a lot. I look forward to the third book in this marvelous series.
The sequel has more character development, staying up late in the night to finish. If you liked the first you will love the second. Now I can't wait for the next book of this series.
"I didn't kill her." the creature said, it's words now heavily slurred. "I became what you wanted. That should of been enough."
Starting back in England in 1914, the first whispers of a Satanic ritual is taking place in the Branksholme Woods. The entire town would father, often times with a human sacrifice of ab unwanted newborn baby, as they would offer it to the Interlopers for protection. In this case, protection against losing its citizens to the first world war. A deep buried secret, the Interlopers would grant two people this pendant said to contain good luck to those who wear them, and it would prove true. As the years came by, so did the peoples respect and need for the Interlopers until they came to be feared and no longer trusted. Armed with the ability to shape shift into whoever they wanted, it was easy to camouflage as the real people were taken into the Phantom Dimension.
"Everything," she said. "We want your world"
It's been months since the incident at Malpas Abbey and the unexamined and horrific deaths had taken place amongst a group of paranormal investigators. Months since Frankie, a close friend and camera woman went missing after being grabbed and yanked through a portal. For Denny Purcell, the urge to find her missing friend and bring her home has been the heaviest thing on her mind since that night. When she was alerted through the Rama Foundation of a similar thing taking place in England, she knows this is the chance she's been waiting on. Trying to blend in a simple tourist out exploring, she's piecing together the clues of the Covenant that took place nearly four hundred years ago. Staying at the Black Swan, the only Inn in the small town, she's seeing the children abducting into the woods firsthand and their odd behaviors. Isolated and quiet, the three children aren't the same fun loving spirits as before. Staying in the Black Swan is where she meets Mel Bavistock and her daughter Isobel. One of the three children who went missing, she was very respected and acting like a child, she didn't quite fit the picture.
But something inhumane returned in her place.
Meanwhile Edward Gould was back at the Ramola Foundation about to help conduct the experiments on the Interloper posing as his missing little sister Lucy. Looking deceivingly like a child, it was able to influence people's minds to get what it wanted, but it wasn't strong enough to break free. Trying to figure out how it's surviving in this world, all the X-rays and tests were inconclusive. While Denny was entering the Phantom Dimension again to search for Frankie and the missing children, she would arm herself in the pendant gifted originally by Interlopers. Fearful and hurt by it, she used it on the Soul Eater which set free dozens of those captured over centuries back to the mortal realm. Surprised by the newfound discoveries, they are hopeful they could stop the Interlopers, but it could prove impossible until every portal is sealed successfully.
I've got to get her out of there. No matter what. No matter the cost.
This is book number 2, it could be a stand alone book. You have a well written story with an original plot, well defined characters with good narration. Book number 2 is more interesting than book one and keeps your interest. You have Thom Bowers with narration and he always makes the story interesting with his voices for characters and the excitement he puts into the book. You have Denny continued into the book as she investigates the small town of Machen. Denny is getting more information on the interlopers as she finds an amulet as she feels is a good luck charm. You find out a lot on the interlopers and you at times feel sorry for them. Denny is sure there is more to the story, children are now disappearing. Then they children come back. You just have to read this book to see how it goes. i enjoyed this book.
Honestly surprised by how much I am enjoying all of these short books. It probably could have been an easier journey if they were all in one book but I guess it makes it easier on the eyes! This book you get to learn a little more about the interlopers and the PD realm.
As the few survivors of the team try to cope with what happened at the Abbey, the media continues to talk about the massacre that occurred. There may be a chance to rescue one member who was sucked into another dimension, but the danger that lurks is only the beginning of the terror that is to come.
