One of a million statistics in the intergalactic war, Jocelyn St. Germaine is captured, sold as a slave and then forced to fight in the Deg’Nara gladiator games. She’s slated to lose when Kanaan, the most feared warrior of all, claims her as his own. With his help, Joss’s chances of survival increase, but is it enough?
Kanaan filled his lungs and roared, head thrown back as he issued the challenge. “She belongs to me! I claim her!” From behind him, he caught the female’s startled gasp.
I write stories with alpha males and strong, determined women.
I am a dreamer, an avid reader of fiction, a sometimes gardener and an inept crafter. I live in Idaho. I have three sons, a daughter-in-law, a granddaughter, little grandson and a new great-granddaughter. Over the years, I taught dance but as time passed, I decided to try my hand at a new endeavor - writing. I enjoy life and all its promises.
When Jocelyn St. Germaine is captured and enslaved, she never thought she’d be fighting as a gladiator. She’ll do anything to stay alive, though, so she accepts her fate. But when the odds are stacked against her and fearless warrior Kanaan claims her as his own, Joss wonders if she’s just jumped from one cage to another. Kanaan promises many things but none of them include love. As Joss and Kanaan fight to survive together, they form a bond so strong, nothing can break it. Can Joss trust him and their newfound love or is it all part of the Deg’Nara’s games?
Abaddon Rising is an intense science fiction romance even Nero would applaud. The backdrop is gladiator (fight to the death) survival games which set the tone for the story. The descriptive narration is spot on and allows the reader to experience everything Joss and Kanaan go through. The plot is heavy on action and steamy romance. P.L. Parker knows how to write science fiction romance I enjoyed every minute of Abaddon Rising. Suzanne Collins fans will cheer upon reading this book. If you’re looking for a strong female warrior who finds romance where she least expects it, you’ll love Abaddon Rising. Highly recommend!
I enjoyed reading Abaddon Rising by Ms. Parker very much. The world building is very well done and imaginative, the love scenes are super hot, and the characters well fleshed out with well thought out personalities. However, there was one thing that made me unable to give this book 5 Cups; it had a little too much graphic violence for me. I love action as much as the next person, and I do not mind some violence, but this book had more than just action, there were almost constant battles throughout the book, and much of the book included graphic, descriptive violence and death scenes that caused me to have to put the book down at times and just take a break. This book is very well written and were it not for that one thing that took away from the enjoyment for me, I would have given it a 5 Cup rating. If you can see past the graphic violence, to the relationship building between the two main characters, then you will enjoy this book very much. I love the details but at some point for me it was difficult to understand and took some time to completely understand the phrases and such.
That being said both the characters were independent but aware of their pluses and minuses since they are ultimately and knowing your weaknesses will give them strategize on how to fight, what weapon to use, where to aim etc.
Can be read as a stand alone since I have not read Book 1. I was surprised that it was part of a series.
This book was a delicious surprise, I really wasn't expecting much but boy was I wrong. From the first I was pulled in, loved the world building, loved the main characters, the romance, and I appreciate the erotic element! The fighting/action scenes were beautiful written and the side characters really helped to develop the story. My only complaint is the romance between the characters could have been more developed and better explored. I felt some of the scenes were rushed and could have been really great if given a few more pages. Plus, the price of this story was a little much but since I read this story in one setting and could not put down.. still 5 stars!!! If you like a romance with action and hot scenes... purchase and start reading!!! I really loved it!!
Once I started Joss and Kanaan's story I couldn't put it down, it was non-stop badassery by both. If you like your sci-fi, aliens big, bad, broken and sometimes a butt-head Kanaan is your male! Joss can hold her own against unbelievable odds, body odors, and gross food but comes out stronger and the type of female that ends up owning Kanaan's heart. I enjoyed the story's pace and you don't get muddled down with a lot of other worldly jargon. I hope Trix's story is next. P.L. Parker has been a automatic buy since I found Riley's Journey and I have waited with anticipation for each of her new releases.
Another great story. I loved the characters in this story and how they grew and changed. Really great story line and wonderfully written. I enjoyed how descriptive and you can actually see that area and what the characters look like.
The Deg’Nara series takes place in a part of the galaxy where there is a really nasty alien race, the Deg’Nara, that wants to enslave or obliterate all other races and worlds out there. Why? There is not a lot of reasoning given, except, like I said, they are really nasty.
The good guys are either slaves of the Deg’Nara or part of the onging fight against them. Or both. This common background is ripe for drama and action and romance.
Abaddon Rising focuses on two gladiator-like slaves of the Deg’Nara. Joss is a human woman who was ‘accidentally’ kidnapped by the Chiagan-Se and brought to this part of the galaxy (See The Chalice). The battles between the Chiagan-Se and the Deg’Nara resulted in Joss being captured and made a slave.
Kanaan is the local boy. Part Chiagan-Se and part Mogishada he was raised in the slave system, but his mother taught him everything he needed to know in order to not just survive, but to come out on top. Indeed, at the beginning of the book Kanaan is the 'demon warrior of the slave pits', also known as The Destroyer.
In the slave quarters Kanaan claims Joss to protect her, but it will soon become something more.
The relationship between Joss and Kanaan is a bit off again, on again, depending on the last conversation they had. It is not an easy alliance but as the reader, I knew they were meant to be together. However, neither of them is an ace communicator, so it takes awhile for them to confess their love. Which is how it should be. 🙂
Joss and Kanaan will go through much before the end of the book. Arena battles, training, a tournament, escape attempt, family re-union and ultimately, the chance to join in the great, far-reaching battle against the Deg’Nara. The story is nearly epic and the romance keeps the pace. I truly enjoyed every page of Abaddon Rising.
I feel like I should clarify the Deg’Nara series, which started with The Chalice, originally published in 2012. Breeder Slave came next, in 2017, but it does not seem to be billed as part of the series (according to Amazon or Goodreads). Finally, Abaddon Rising came out this year and it is designated Deg’Nara #2. It is a little confusing, but to clarify:
Breeder Slave really is part of the Deg’Nara series. It takes place during the same time period as Abaddon Rising but has mostly different characters and locations. There is a slight overlap. Read them in any order. Both fit in nicely with the Deg’Nara series.
The author provided a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Abaddon Rising was a bit of a conundrum for me because I like my heroines tuff and prefer it when they can stand on their own. I also like it when the hero is alpha and wants to protect his female at any cost.
In Abaddon, Joss is a slave in a gladiator style fighting games. She is forced to fight aliens more powerful than her and is going to lose her next round until Kanaan The Destroyer claims her as his own and gives her tips on how to win.
Kanaan is very alpha, yet other than sexual relations he doesn’t know how to be loving towards Joss and that leaves her confused and feeling used. She is at a point that she doesn’t want to live as a slave forever and even the little comfort and protection Kanaan offers isn’t enough. She is resigned to her end.
Kanaan has claimed Joss as his, not knowing why. There is just something about her that calls to him. But with her comes the added burden of someone to take care of other than himself. Most of the time he treats her as a burden, then he will alpha up and claim her to be his when he wants sex, or he feels she is being threatened by someone or something she can’t handle.
So even though this story had all the elements that I usually love, I think it was that Kanaan acted so indifferent towards Joss most of the time that bothered me. He didn’t start to show a caring side until the end of the book. I wanted more for her.
An incredibly well written story! P L Parker has created a time in space that will just blow you away. The survival of the fittest has never been told better and oh, yes, love and a couple of happily ever afters!!
I just Love this authors work, it’s so imaginative. I love her heros, Kanaan was just everything. Joss was a heroine I admire. Such an action filled world.
Usually the longer I think about a book I didn't like, I just start to loath the book even more. But that was not the case here.
The book was actually good the biggest reason it wasn't good for me was the lack of raw emotions.
The plot of the story well, it wasn't anything spectacular. It was kinda lame but I wouldn't mind that because our focus should have been on Joss and Kanaan and their relationship. Sometimes it felt like the author wanted more of my focus on the lacking storyline and that just wasn't rly good idea.
This book has a lots of potential if it was a first book of author I would say Pretty neat for first try, but it wasn't first try and it did need more.
I would appreciate it rewrote. Let it be the same mostly. But get rid off the long world descriptions and world building when it was not rly for anything of importance in the book. And let's more focus on Joss and Kanaan relationships and their characters building. This is just mine opinion. But let me tell you if it was more full emotion the book would make it to my top list.
.................
Why does this book has such goot ratings for real. I think it's like 2,5 stars book.
First of all I understand that all the characters were toughen up warriors. But what the hell. There was meant to be love in this? Where. Cause I couldn't find any.
Kanaan claims a Joss taking care of her as he deems. I get it he doesn't know how to take care of smn else and he did pretty good job there. Even offering himself as for pleasure of some ugly woman so Joss can shower. That felt like he wants the best for her and like he deeply cared.
But then he won't cuddle Joss after sex and she wanted it... Why didn't she tell him she wants it? Or if he would hold her. It was clear he didn't know better.
And Joss sees him fuck another woman and right after the woman leaves she let's him fuck her? Even though she was angry as fuck? And jelous and hurt? What is this, is she mentally damaged. Either u don't care and have open relationship or u care and that is wrong... Not I am so hurt but I will let him fuck her. He treated her as dirt sometimes but she was always happy to open her legs for him.
Don't get me wrong he saved her life and did a lot for her, but that didn't apologize the other wrong things he did.
In the end he sends Joss away for her own protection ofcs. Totally telling her to get lost, we get her some emotion. She is heartbroken for a little bit but then she is totally okay. She told him she loves him and we get nothing. Okay she is tough warrior. I can not expect much feeling from her, then?
And he comes for her, ofcs... Saving her again and what she does? Jumps into his arms agreeing to be his bound mate and all. I just don't get it. She was described as a proud woman. Wouldn't proud woman have some dignity. Wanting respect and being equal. I certainly didn't get the impression they were equal. He dragged her through a lot emotional shit and she was just okay with it.
We got defiance from her in some parts and I was hoping that it will happen, she will do more then her empty treats to him and empty curses. They held no real treat. She told him to fuck off and then lets him fuck her anyway...
And for Christ stakes! Why there were so many exclamation marks in this book. Was it like the whole fucking time angry! Or what! Cause I rly don't know! Why would smn use so many useless!!!!!exclamation marks!!!! When they had no place there!!!!
Rly the book took to long to read for no real drama. It had big potential for me to love it. But it was just devoid of emotion. I don't wanna say there weren't any. They were there. But not enough for me. And not enough believable for me. The felt fake! That's it. The felt fake. I didn't believe when Kanaan "cried" I didn't believe him. It's supposed to be life about death and raw emotions.
I am sorry. I am just angry I lost so much of my time reading this book, when there are so many better written ones.
