I'm Aodan. A thief. A really good thief. My best friend Margrite and I are nearly out of this crappy city. With this last job, we'll have enough to disappear on an island somewhere. We're so close I can practically smell the rum drinks. But then all hell breaks loose when I wake up as a dragon. You know, teeth, claws, blue scales, furniture exploding under my massive form. The feeling of smoke is a permanent fixture in my throat. The dragon appears when it wants to, and I black out. I don't have time for this. To add to all this drama, I think someone is trying to kill me. My home is gone. I have nowhere to hide while I sleep off the crazy dragon hangover that comes after each appearance of the beast. As if the dragon scales weren't enough, I'm now plagued by this new voice in my head - some annoying guy wanting to talk, and meet, and who knows what else? All I want is for me and my best friend to get out of town alive. If I could stop sprouting a tail at inappropriate times, that would be pretty great too. Dragon Lost is the first book in the Dragon Thief series.
This was a fast moving story that got better with each turn of the page! I don't read too much fantasy, but was pleasantly surprised with how realistic this story felt, as if it could happen in our real world! I look forward to reading more stories that feature Aodan and his newly discovered family.
Ok, this is just a a “quickie” review. Unfortunately, I’m in a hospital and asked my husband to post this since I don’t have the time or ability right now to do better - even though the book definitely deserves it.
Bottom line: Lisa Manifold’s Dragon Lost (Dragon Thief Book 1) is wonderful and easily worth five stars. This was one truly fun novel and definitely recommended. It had just what I wanted, was well written, with excellent world building and a great plot, and it’s lead, the thief Aidan (who really matured wonderfully over the course of the book) and cast of supporting characters (especially Margrite) were simply superb .
This was a really good book! It introduces a new world without getting too bogged down, and brings in a full cast of fascinating characters with unique personalities. It was engaging and very fun to read!
It all starts with Aodan, a thief, on his latest job. Things are going awry in a distinctly unusual way, not only with the job but with himself. But finishing the job turns out to be just the beginning. Aodan and Margrite, his best friend, have planned a new life after this job, but the changes coming may make life even more new than they were expecting.
At the start there is a lot flashbacks to explain the job and the current situation, which sometimes worked well and sometimes felt off. But once that was done everything was smooth and the story was truly interesting. Aodan and Margrite are willing to accept (with some slight freaking out) that Aodan is in some way a dragon and changes are coming. They are able to be rational about it, but still have times of incredulity. It works very well and you easily can imagine yourself in their shoes.
A big part of the book is about family, both blood and the one you make. Family is what shapes much of the conflict of Aodan's past, and learning more about his past doesn't make that any better. But his chosen family is important too, and the contrast between the two is done very well with all if the different characters we meet.
This ends on quite an off note, not exactly a cliffhanger, but definitely not a complete ending. Further trouble is brewing and I look forward to seeing what happens next for the Dragon Thief!
Aodan just wants to complete one final job, get paid, and get out. Unfortunately, a heist with a reward this lucrative is bound to have a catch. He just didn't realize the catch would be his own unusual ties to these events. Like him turning into a dragon. Now he's determined to do whatever it takes to get away from all the drama . . .
I liked this a lot, although I think it's a little hampered by the way the end kind of drops off. It feels like just the end of one chapter, instead of the end of the book. Basically there's not enough sense of conclusion. (This would bother me less if the next book was already here so I could just keep going.)
Aodan was a fun character. I liked how he reacted (badly) to his new ability to shapeshift. He likes being good at what he does, but he likes even more having as trouble-free a life as possible. And being a dragon, and having mystical bad guys after him, is way more trouble than he ever wanted. But since he's stuck with it, he's trying to figure out the best and fastest way he can deal with it and get out.
I liked Margrite too. I liked that she and Aodan are best friends without a trace of romance (former siblings, even if not by blood). I liked the way they understand each other, and can communicate without talking, and how they're always on each others' side.
I also really, really liked the dragons. Their culture is in ruins, thanks to a war that wiped most of them out, but they're an interesting species. There's a lot of little details I appreciated, like how color works, or the way mental speech plays into who they are.
I didn't really care for the psychic reading, though. That whole scene felt like an extended hint about what's going to happen, and an obscure way to express some of Aodan's backstory.
Overall I'm looking forward to the next book, and I hope it comes soon. I rate this book Recommended.
Wow, this story really grabbed me. I loved the other stories about the Realms, especially the Goblin King series. I loved how this one tied into those and I got to meet some of my old friends like Iris, Brennan, Drake and Aine.
Aodan was really a character that you wanted to understand better. The fact that Margrite was there for him and sometimes interrupted what was going on in his head helped. I found myself really wondering about why he could not leave the city, that really bothered me like a mystery that needed to be solved. It was and I will not tell you and spoil it. Aodan is one very smart young man who has lived through a very horrible childhood. Margrite is his best friend and only family. You can really see the connection the two of them have and this is important to the story.
I will not give out any spoilers but Aodan really does grow up a lot during this book. He learns a lot about himself and what he is made of. Margrite is one of those characters that you admire because she is strong and is a no-nonsense type of woman. Cannot wait to see what happens next for Aodan and Margrite and hope to meet up some more with old friends from the Realms.
Great Book. I had a hard time putting it down, just wanted to know what would happen next. Middle school students on up, that love dragons, magic, suspense, real life issues and more, I feel would get into this book. Aodan has been in foster care since he was 4. None of the homes were good, except the last he felt he was treated a little better. Margrite is his best friend also in the foster system and comes from a ruff foster home. They get out of the foster system and take up a more life of crime stealing to live. They have almost made it to be free from this life, then everything changes. Aodan finds out he can turn into a dragon and that others are trying to kill him. What will he do? Who can he talk to? Will Margrite still stay his friend and help him? Margrite is kidnapped, can he trust these other dragons, fae and other magical people to help him save her? Can't wait for the next book to find out what happens? I received an arc copy for my honest review.
I got the prequel to this book as a freebie. It told the story of Aodan as a child in the foster care system, his first theft and how he met and befriended Margrite. It was a rather whimsical little short story. Nothing like what I had been reading at the time and it totally capture my attention. Of course I had to read more. Dragon Lost is even better than what I expected after reading that offering. I thoroughly recommend you escape into its pages. What’s next for me? I’m off to read the next book in the series.
This is book one in a new series by Lisa Manifold. Let me tell you that it is a great new series! It is fast paced with adventure, mystery, dragons, and fae. The characters, Aodan and Margrite, are easy to connected with and help draw you farther into an exciting new world. I can't wait to read the next one. I am glad that it is already available, because waiting would be hard to do.
Fast paced, adventure story. About a foster kid who turns into a dragon and experiences a whole new world. You are right there with Aodan, thanks to the wonderful descriptions thoughout the book. Looking forward to book 2, to see what happens to Aodan and Margrite and all the other characters.
Great story and characters that draw you in and make you want to keep reading about them. I cannot wait to read more stories in this series, already feeling sad that the first book is done already, lol
What a ending, makes you want more! Can't wait to read the next book in the series. You have good guys, bad guys, dragons, fae, along with intrigue and suspense.
Wow. What a story. Poor Aodan is a great thief, but he doesn’t expect to end up as a dragon. Kept me wanting to read more and looking forward for the next book.
The thief, Aodan, was on a dusty ceiling beam, hoping not to drop to his death. The bright light below was disorienting; he tasted smoke or something in the back of his throat; and he struggled to stifle a sneeze. Why had he accepted this job? As he watched, a pinpoint of light below began to grow larger and a man appeared. He seemed to look at Aodan in the dark, red light streaked from his hands, an electric jolt ran through Aodan, and then the other man disappeared! What was going on? Finally he found the item and he and Margrite, his best friend and partner, went to Luke’s to complete the transaction and get paid. This had been his last job – now they would leave this awful city and start over.
Aodan bought a bike and, as he was hiding it in an old closet, a voice called to him! He didn’t see anyone, but the voice sounded hopeful that it had found him?? He ignored it and told Margrite they were leaving sooner than planned! He went to bed and woke up to a scream from Margrite as his bed collapsed on the floor – he was now a blue dragon!!!
This was an absolutely wonderful and clever story line, full of vivid, memorable characters! The amount of detail provided really drew a clear mental picture of the events going on, especially the opening describing the theft from Caleb’s warehouse. It was amazing! There are tons of strange events about to happen – stranger than have already been mentioned, that is . . . You are going to love this book! I am eager for the next to come out and continue this funny, incredible journey! Don’t miss out! This is really a good one!
