For 5 years this was pretty much the only decent (or existing) Romanian comic available. Now that it's over, I feel it was better than the sum of its parts.

What started out as a retelling of an old folk tale spun out into this hugely complex and complicated fantasy setting, with vultures and histories and characters intertwining in fascinating ways. At its best, the comic and the accompanying novels (Furia Oarba & Fluviul Soaptelor) played off one another, setting up and paying off themes revolving around human nature and arrogant, all-powerful gods playing with the lives of lesser creatures.

Unfortunately none of this was resolved in the comics. The ending of the 38th issue is so abrupt that I spent a whole day making sure there wasn't some missing final issue I was supposed to read after it. Futhermore, after a lot of buildup about making the world right by summoning an all-powerful mother-goddess to stop humanity's corruption and the mad games of the gods, said goddess turned out to be... just as much of an inhuman monster as the rest of them.

Thus, Harap Alb Continua ended with pretty much an apocalyptic flooding of the entire world, wiping the slate clean for a continuation that most likely will never occur. Ironic, given the series' name, but more than that, it feels like an outright betrayal of the story's core themes and narratives. Why spend so many years developing a world and characters for your readers to care about, creating conflicts that demand resolution, only to destroy it all. It feels petulant.

Just like Mother Neris herself.

4/5 stars because the artwork is excellent and the story has moments where it truly shines. But ultimately, barring some grand revelation in the final novel of the Haiganu series, this left a bad taste in my mouth.
