Anita Oh has got to be one of the most prolific indie writers I’ve come across. In the span of three years, she’s released this YA series of NINE books and counting. There are also two novellas in the series (which I haven’t read), and apparently, she’s got another series going.

But this review is about The Alpha Wolf, the ninth installment in her Werewolf High series. If you’ve followed my reviews of her previous eight books in the series, then you should have the gist of the premise. Main character and narrator Lucy O’Connor started out as a relatively normal girl attending the prestigious and secluded Amaris High School. Magic and supernatural creatures tend to follow her around, and she has encountered all sorts of shenanigans in her time there. Unlike another famous series about a character at a magical school where each book spanned one of seven years at the school, author Oh’s magical school follows a more American four-year school model, but one year at the school spans three books in the series. So, book nine occurs in the latter part of Lucy’s junior year at Amaris.

While most American juniors are starting to worry about college, under the mantra (true or not) that junior year is the most crucial, the events that have befallen Lucy and her lycanthrope pack have been extremely crucial to their survival. I won’t spoil the ending of the previous book The Rival Pack, but know that it ended with their lives tragically shaken up.

The Alpha Wolf focuses on the growing threat of Lucy’s father trying to obtain the powers of all the different magic councils, and he’s already got a couple of them. There’s a power vacuum in the werewolf council, as indicated by the book’s title. The cover, one of only two in the series not to feature Lucy, shows who I can only assume to be Althea Wilde (Tennyson’s sister). She’s always been the more rational and prepared of the siblings, and she certainly does take charge in this book. But does she become the new Alpha? I will not spoil that.

Like later books in that other series I mentioned, the stakes have gotten really high by the time this book rolls around. And I won’t deny that those raised stakes really gave the story its urgency. There are some dangerous missions, and Lucy’s life is threatened. Those sequences and battles are definitely well described. There’s also a somewhat shocking possible casualty of the proceedings, which again, makes sense given the stakes. I like all that, as it indicates proper progression in this kind of story.

However, I found it to be at the expense of some of Lucy’s patented snark. The earlier books are definitely more comedic, which is okay because she’s a freshman then, but some of that seems to be missing here. Gone are the plots where Lucy was dealing an individual spell or curse gone awry, as the titles and plots of her junior year focus more on the bigger picture. That’s not necessarily a bad thing—as now she’s preparing for an epic battle for her senior year—but it’s like the most fun facet of her personality is dialed down a little.

Still, it’s an enjoyable read, and the action sequences elevate it above the previous book. It’s not the alpha story of the series (for me, that’s still book six—The Time Loop), but it’s a worthy successor at FOUR STARS.

Werewolf High 9
A new alpha. A pack divided. Sometimes there is no right choice.

Lucy’s world is thrown into chaos now that all the packs have merged under one Supreme Alpha. The alpha is annoying, but he’s just a puppet. Lucy knows the real problem is her father. He wants to take over the world, and so far he’s doing a pretty good job of it.

And that’s not her only problem. Everyone’s fighting. Sam’s in a coma. Harper York is kidnapped, and finals are just around the corner. The only thing that’s going well is her relationship with Tennyson, but they can’t be together until the alpha is gone.

Lucy has the power to defeat the alpha, but to use it, she might have to become the thing she fears the most.
Total Score: 5/5

Summary:
Things are not looking up for Lucy and her friends as Henry, the new supreme alpha, with the support of Lucy’s power hungry father is determined to take absolute control under any means possible. Lucy knows her father will do anything to steal all the paranormal power he can. That much power in anyone’s hands could spell doom for any individuals standing in his way. If that wasn’t enough, Sam is slowly dying as her father takes his life energy just like he took her mothers. Lucy’s determination to save everyone puts her at odds with Tennyson who wants to keep her safe. A group divided places everyone in jeopardy as the fight of their life is approaching.

This is a fast paced and intricate story that while answering some questions poses just as many new problems. They conflicts between Tennyson and Lucy puts their feelings to the test even as they the old alpha command prevents them from acting on those feelings. The struggle between good and evil is a prevalent theme in this series as both sides continue to gear up for the fight ahead. Lucy, Tennyson, Sam and the others must choose their the direction of their lives as they fight to keep each other alive. I look forward to reading the next book in the Werewolf High series.

Received for an honest review.

I'm with Nikolai on this one: “I just want to go back to the days where Lucy got into all sorts of stupid mishaps and I carried her around in my hat.”
At that time (book 2), we just laughed at the funny situations Lucy got in, how Tennyson reacted and how the five of them were growing into a team.
Now, all is gloomy. The werewolf council's gone, Alpha Wilde gone, and Henry is supreme alpha. Sam is not very well and Lucy's father is plotting to get control over all councils.
At least, Lucy and Tennyson seem to get on, even though the alpha command is still holding them back but it gets weaker.
But why is it always so complicated between Lucy and Tennyson?
I liked that Lucy is getting a grip on her powers and that she starts to understand it more. Also, Hannah and Harper have some nice lines and I loved Gert.
The end is another bang but if I learned one thing in the Werewolf High Series it is that nothing is ever what it seems and the dead live longer.

Oh my goodness Lucy and the gang have gone through so much and their junior year hasn't ended yet. Cousin Henry became the Supreme Alpha, Lucy's father helped him and now they plan to take over all the councils. Althea is the apparent Alpha, Nikolai shows he has a heart and Tennyson and Lucy have trust issues. Sam is apparently a conduit of power.

So many irons in the fire and through it all Lucy's power increases can she learn to control it or will the darkness take root within her. Ms. Oh kept me enthralled with all that was happening but that ending bit the big one and I cannot wait for the next episode.

I voluntarily read an advance copy and have not been compensated in any way for this opinion.

i really like these books! even though there are three books in each year, each book is actually a story in itself. the main characters are well developed and very different from each other. the main character is hilariously sarcastic and has a great sense of self. she finds humor in her worst situations and always finds a reason to keep going. a great example for teens.
really enjoyable series!

some swearing but her most used derogatory word is jerk often with some great adjective added to it.

Situation just got serious! With all the Alphas dead and one Supreme Alpha things are definitely not looking good.
.
I had mixed feelings about this book! I love Sam and was disappointed that he didn’t seem to have a role until the very end. Huge cliffhanger, need the next book now! .

I really enjoyed reading this book. This series is great, and I love seeing where each character ends up by the end of the novel in this set. I'd recommend this book to fans of werewolves and paranormal-focused schools.

This was one of her best books in the series.
Everyone in the magic community is arguing over how to get rid of the new Alpha. Can they come together before things get much worse?

Is it an endless series?

I really was hoping it would end already. It was a funny book at first but now it's just dragging on and on.

2.5 stars Meh. Like Nikolai I miss the old days when Lucy was always getting into trouble and he carried her around in his hat. It has lost the light hearted charm that made the earlier books so much fun to read. Lucy isnt down to earth and sassy anymore. There is no chance to enjoy any of the characters or relationships as the spend all the time being grim. It fits with where the story has gone but it is just not enjoyable anymore. And I am sick of the Lucy / Tennysson not together thing. It has dragged on to the point that now i don't care much one way or the other if they end up together or not.
