Rate this book
After being hired as the temporary director of Marietta Medical ER, Dr. Lucy Davidson meticulously plots the course she wants the quickly growing facility to take. She’s laser-focused, determined to prove herself worthy to become the permanent director. No distraction will sway her…not even the brilliant and disturbingly handsome new Emergency Room physician, Thomas McAvoy. Fulfilling a promise, Thomas has come to Marietta to help the woman who saved his life then leave as soon as possible. Still sustaining injuries from the near fatal attack, he realizes how much he appreciates the slower pace of his temporary assignment at a rural hospital. It's a soothing balm after years in an hectic urban ER. The charm of Marietta and the friendliness of his colleagues lure Thomas into thinking he might like to make his temporary position permanent, especially since he and Lucy have become closer. My strong desire to tell stories hit me early in life. At the young age of nine, I penned a play about Nessie from the monster’s point of view. Since then, I’ve written constantly, whether it was in a journal, diary, in my notebooks at school, or on my computer.
But I also came by story-telling naturally. My great-grandmothers and grand-parents, all had traveled extensively through the US and the world and told us all of their parents and grandparents immigrating to America and ending up in Texas.
Now factor in the numerous aunts and uncles, who were always amazing sources of information and incredible stories about everything from where exactly the tooth fairy puts all those teeth to Santa’s elf who hides in the air conditioning vents and watches us all year, to the mythological creatures that hang out under our beds, and I had a very well rounded education in how to spin a yarn.
In my adult years, I learned to be a waitress, bartender, bill collector, bank teller, Blockbuster Video clerk, and dishwasher all before I earned my degree in nursing. Then I spent the next ten years in the adult ICU’s and adult and pediatric trauma units. As if I didn’t have anything else to do, I went to massage therapy school to learn to better care for my ICU patients, many of whom suffered bed sores and back pain due to their extensive times in bed. (Yes, I’m coming up with a hero who’s a massage therapist.)
After that certification, I still didn’t think I had enough knowledge and in an attempt to educate myself right out of the general dating pool, I returned to school to earn my journalism degree. It was while I worked as a Level 1 pediatric trauma nurse, I met my husband while I worked at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas.
Now I hope to share my fiction and non-fiction story telling techniques with our children and with anyone who wants to read or hear it.

So here we are in my Favorite town, Marietta and now we are focused on the local hospital.
Can we say Marietta "Grey's" Montana Medical...

We have transplants to Marietta., two ER doctors.
Temporary director of Marietta Medical ER, Dr. Lucy Davidson wants to find a home and Marietta seems just right. She has a vision and sees herself rising up the management chain.

The other visiting ER doctor, Thomas McAvoy, is in Marietta to help a friend. He takes a liking with the town, ER and this new pretty doctor. In fact, he may just throw his hat in the ring for a promotion so he can stay in Marietta.

Only one problem...
Both of these romantically entwined doctors have just found out they are aiming for the same job!

For a small town Marietta, Montana certainly has grown even in the few years that I’ve been reading stories and series featuring my favorite fictional small town setting. Over those years the small hospital in Marietta has been mentioned in several stories. Some improvements made, a few new doctors being brought in but nothing dedicated exclusively to the staff, doctors, nurses, techs and just everyday people who make that hospital run as smoothly as it does… until now with the Marietta Medical series.

This new series starts off with Resisting the Doctor which brings us two dedicated, competent and extremely stubborn doctors. Thomas is a doctor who travels to assignments on a temporary basis. He’s a talented ER doctor who doesn’t put down roots, and he’s happy with his life… for the most part. After the attack though he’s beginning to second guess his decisions – and after meeting Lucy those questions are even larger. Lucy is a survivor, a fighter and a skilled doctor. Right now she’s in Marietta as the ER director, or at least on a temporary stint until or if her position is made permanent. She is stubborn enough to believe she can do it all herself, even when she knows she needs help. One disruptive, destructive jerk of a patient one night gives new meaning to a difficult 24 hour shift. While Lucy does her best to remain professional, even when Thomas steps in to offer “help” she remains in charge… in a whole heck of a lot of ways. Never ever, ever underestimate the abilities of a tiny woman who knows her way around martial arts. That night will change everything for Thomas and Lucy — now they just have to figure out how to stay in the same location before they lose it all.

Resisting the Doctor is one heck of a story. Lucy and Thomas are both strong characters with past events shaping their current lives. I liked them as a couple and individually and their romance is sweet and steamy in all the right places. There are strong secondary characters in this story – some new, some we know far too well, like one meddling gossip that I, personally, cannot stand. One secondary character, Jade, is really hard for me to get a handle on. She’s holding on to some deep pain, she’s snarky, rude, attitude-filled and most times not a very nice woman. Yet, there is something that tells me there is more there than meets the eye, I’ll be interested to learn more of her story one day. I enjoyed this new world build around Marietta’s hospital and loved seeing old friends around town. If you’re hooked on Marietta, Montana stories then your’e going to love this new series. I would definitely recommend it to any Contemporary Romance reader.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

WOW!! I was blown away while reading Resisting the Doctor by Patricia W. Fischer, the first book in her Marietta Medical series. This wonderful story has two nerdy ER doctors attracted to each other, sharing sizzling chemistry, with only a couple of problems; she’s his boss and he is temporarily working in Marietta. Dr. Lucy Davidson is young looking and struggles to be taken seriously; sexism is alive and well, as she works to become the permanent ER director. Dr. Thomas McAvoy came to Marietta to help a friend who saved his life but realizes the slower pace of this assignment might be a good fit as he still struggles with overcoming the damages he sustained in his near fatal attack. After years of not finding the yin to their yang could Lucy and Thomas have found their life partners?

I enjoyed the strength Lucy had in facing the world, not wanting to live on the laurels of her siblings. She fit in well with the ER team and I loved the way she proved her ninja skills, taking care of a rebellious drunk patient. Sometimes, it’s still hard to be taken seriously when you are a woman. I could associate with Lucy not wanting to ask for help but liked the manner in which Ms. Fischer handled Thomas finding a way to give her that help without taking anything away from her. Thomas had his own demons but I loved the way he found coping mechanisms to deal with them and open up to Lucy about them.

I loved this book and didn’t want to put this book down, reading it in one day. Ms. Fischer wrote a wonderful story that drew me in, not letting me go until I turned the last page. I highly recommend this book to other readers and can’t wait for the next book in this series.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

"Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review"
This is such a great, original story from the wounded hero perspective! Seldom have I read a contemporary wounded hero with this kind of issues and so finely depicted! Kudos for the author, Patricia W. Fischer, for the research, accuracy and for making the issues, the problems a constant nuisance for our endearing and so unassuming hero. His nonchalance, supposed indifference and/or stoicism, about them are also remarkable. I could even sympathize with his tendency to bury his hand in the sand – something that made Dr. Thomas McAvoy even more endearing.
Minimizing Thomas’s issues and emphasizing Lucy’s issues made me much more sympathetic towards the first. It’s not that I didn’t like Lucy Davidson, an ER doctor that maintains a certain innocence despite her tough job, but I found her too tolerant with Jade’s abuses.
There’s another thing I loved about this book: it is a truly realistic (at least from my ordinary person perspective) medical romance. The ER, its patients and personnel seem real. The doctor who is a terrible patient sounds so believable. And the opening scene with an obnoxious patient is excellent, with the somewhat geek hero entering the stage with that low profile style. I loved it!
I'm grateful to the publisher, Tule Publishing, and NetGalley for providing a free copy.

Two new doctors, Dr. Lucy Davidson and Dr. Thomas McAvoy, start out butting heads in Marietta Medical ER when it comes to a drunk driving accident victim. But they soon find themselves becoming attracted to each other which might not be the best idea since they work together.

Lucy and Thomas are both working temporary positions at Marietta Medical. Lucy is working as the temporary director and if everything goes as planned, she could soon see herself in a permanent position. But it seems someone is out to make her job more difficult. Thomas is the new emergency room physician. He is only in town until he finishes helping his friend Jade make repairs to her father’s house before she sells it. When things start heating up with Lucy, Thomas just might change his plans and stay in Marietta.

This was a good story, but in the beginning, during the ER scene, I spent a lot of time googling words. I don’t know anything about doctors, hospitals or medical terminology. So, it did slow me down a little bit. But once I got past that part the story started to flow really well. I can tell the author has a lot of medical knowledge or did thorough research to get details like that. I liked how Lucy and Thomas were both stubborn and set in their ways and how they eventually found a way to put their differences aside to get to know each other. There are also some very steamy intimate scenes in this book too. I look forward to reading the rest of this series.

Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) I enjoyed this story, we are back in the town of Marietta and for some reason all of those men seem perfect or near perfect truly must be something in the water, whatever it is I want some. So in this story we have Lucy an ER doctor and with a tragic pass she knows what it takes to help other heal but since she was known as the the girl who survived she needed a new start somewhere where they didn't know her past. While working the ER she is attracted to Thomas another doctor but she and he are trying to resist the attraction, she doesn't want help and he tends to travel constantly not putting down roots, but when they give in the heat turns up..Enjoy!

Resisting the Doctor is the first book in a new medical series based in Marietta, Montana. I love the fast-paced emergency room scenes and medical dialogue. The story deals with past traumatic events that impact the current lives of the characters in the book. I like how the author includes the struggles of mixing personal and professional relationships. This is a very current read. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. .

Oh but this was slow and ponderous. I didn’t like Lucy - right until almost the last page, she was a pain in the butt, setting herself unrealistic and ridiculous expectations and behaving like a silly, bossy adolescent at times.

There were too many characters and none of them were well developed or engaging. I’ll not bother with this series.

Umm, this was definitely not for me. I finished it, but boy, I thought about ditching it several times. It’s very slow-moving and I just couldn’t get into the characters. While the setting was at a local hospital’s ER, there were just as many scenes at the local hotel. I did like the nerd/geek aspect of both characters, and the Narnia links. Other than that, I didn’t find a whole lot to keep me from putting the book down. Both characters suffered major traumas that decided their careers and how they ended up in Marietta. They both overcame their trauma before coming to Marietta, but Marietta is also used as further healing. I’m not sure how well that worked out for either of them other than they met one another. I’m not sure that was healing or taking their minds off the events that scarred their lives. At any rate, this book was not as engaging as I had expected or hoped it would be.

Good read!

Enjoyed!

Dr. Lucy Davidson left her family in Florida for a position as the Director of the Emergency Room in Marietta, Montana. She has a 90 day probation period. Lucy's determined to prove herself; she doesn't want nor need any distractions. What she didn't count on was Dr. Thomas McAvoy.

Thomas is a traveling doctor. He's in Marietta to help an old friend and then he's onto the next job. Two years ago, Thomas was violently attacked. The recovery was very slow. The slower pace of this smaller hospital is easier for him.

Their attraction, not to mention their chemistry is off the charts. Soon Thomas starts thinking about a permanent position and making a home with Lucy.

A must read!

So I actually read this series in reverse. I really enjoyed the third book in the series. So when I had the opportunity I read the second. Which I didn't like quite as well but it was okay. Then I had the opportunity to read the first book this week and was very disappointed. I just didn't connect with the writing. Characters were okay, but the overall story just didn't engage me.

This is a mixed bag. I liked Lucy and Thomas as individuals and together. I also liked Lucy’s family. However, I think the book ended abruptly and there could’ve been at least an epilogue on how they made their relationship work. There was a bit too much hospital drama. I didn’t like Jade and nothing really happened with the Junior plot. The switching of POV’s could’ve been better.

Read after Book 2

In retrospect, had I read the series in order, I would have had a lot of insight into Book 2. It was fun to realize all the hints in this story as they related to the next book. Not giving up any secrets, you’ll have to read the series for yourself!
If a little soft core porn is too much for you, just skip the series altogether.

Short and sweet romance book. I think ive now found my new go to kind of books. This is my second book ive resd about bioks and honestly im loving it. The only thing i wished this book did was not just talk about the trauma but actually see everything they try to overcome as we were being told alot about what it did to them but never shown.

A great romance with a real story

Usually romance books are trivial drival. This one has woven tough life stories together in a way that is interesting and makes sense. Plus, it makes good reading! Loved this book!
