Deborah Coonts swears she was switched at birth. Coming from a family of homebodies, Deborah is the odd woman out, happiest with a passport, a high-limit credit card, her computer, and changing scenery outside her window. Goaded by an insatiable curiosity, she flies airplanes, rides motorcycles, travels the world, and pretends to be more of a badass than she probably is. Deborah is the author of the Lucky O’Toole Vegas Adventure series, a romantic mystery romp through Sin City. Wanna Get Lucky?, the first in the series, was a New York Times Notable Crime Novel and a double RITA™ Award Finalist. She has also penned the Kate Sawyer Medical Thriller series, the Brinda Rose Humorous Mystery series, as well as a couple of standalones. Although often on an adventure, you can always track her down at www.deborahcoonts.com.
I just love this serie! Lucky never has a dull moment. The characters are amazing and the story is larger than life. You have to be quick to figure out what's really going on and Lucky is no matter what happens, and she always seems to come out on top. She has a whole staff that are more like family. She has a colorful family. She has dynamic friends. This all comes together for a winning combination. Sports always play a role in Las Vegas but even more when this book surrounds the city getting their own NFL team and a whole lot more. Taking place in Las Vegas gives an endless number of possible directions for Lucky going in. I can't wait for more of Lucky's adventures.
Lucky O 'Toole is the chief problem solver for the Babylon Hotel in Vegas. The NFL announces it is moving a team to Vegas. Lucky thinks it will be trouble and she isn't wrong. Nolan Ponder is the chief negotiator who is the chief person responsible for handling the negotiations for bringing the team to Vegas. But he staggers into he Babylon, high as a kite, covered in blood and holding a knife. He doesn't remember how he got there, but it sure looks bad. Since his foe in the negotiations is dead, stabbed many times with the same knife in his hands. There are careers and money on the line. But why murder? What is going on? Meanwhile, her French Chef fiancé wants her to got o Paris and meet his family before the wedding. Her mother Mona is up to her usual difficult ways. And various assorted characters are skulking around looking guilty. All is fair in Sin City and this new adventure is a doozy!
Each book in the series gets better and better. I'm going onto number 10 as we speak. I've gobbled up the whole series in a week. Keep them coming, Ms. Coonts.
I have really enjoyed this series from the very beginning. Unfortunately, this one has made me realize it may be time four the series to come to an end. This was the most dark, dreary and convoluted storyline and it was so hard to get through. I Luke a book with great dialogue but this one was to little of that and too much of descriptive narrative. I skipped over multiple paragraphs just trying to get through it. After this book, I'm not sure I want to continue on with the series
I really don’t see where she’s committed to marrying JC. He’s like some placeholder. He claims he loves her and she claims to love him. I don’t get that. It’s like…convenient and if they broke up, would make business weird. Also, she’s got her own hotel and is always at the Babylon…why???
Lucky Score- for the reader! Author Coonts once again drops us right into the action, starting out with the line "The barrel of a gun pressed up to my temple stopped me mid-stride." And that isn't even the start of the action. As sometimes happens in our heroine, Lucky O'Toole's, life, that "starting gun" isn't what it seems to be, but it does turn out to be something of a clue for the reader of things to come. Our girl, Lucky- who apparently didn't have enough on her plate already- now has her cousin Bethany added into her three-ring circus of a family life. She's also finding the going less than smooth with fiancé Jean Claude- which, since I'm not 100% sure he's really the one for Lucky, I'm okay with for now. JC has to prove himself to me, & he hasn't yet. Her "partner," Detective Romeo, has a secret that's clearly weighing on his mind- & making girlfriend & Lucky's assistant Brandy not happy. Oh, and, yes, then she wakes up after a night romancing Wild Turkey to find herself with ex-lover, ex-bestie, still-maybe-holding-her-heart- Teddie. At least he's wearing pants & not naked- or in one of her dresses! The action starts fast & keeps going, in the super-fast pace fans of Lucky O'Toole have come to know & love. The reader doesn't so much read a Lucky book as become immersed in Lucky's world. It's not unusual for me to find myself holding my breathe as I these books, waiting for the next scene to come. And I both look forward to & dread the ending-- wanting to know the final revelation, but not wanting the action to end. Lucky's parents, Miss P, The Beautiful Jeremy, Jerry, Sergio--oh, Sergio of the hair flipping, almost broke my heart here-- & a few other regulars make appearances. The storyline is inventive & not one you will find common. The whole story is a great addition to the Lucky series. Of course, it also makes me want more, more, more! I don't believe in spoilers, so no plot lines, but I promise- this is a really great read! One caveat- if you've never read a Lucky O'Toole book, you will find it hard to follow some of the relationships & backstories. This book is definitely part of a series, not a stand alone. You can keep reading & you will figure most of it out. Or, do yourself a favor, & read the series from the start. You'll definitely feel, well, Lucky.
If there is one thing I can count on from a Deborah Coonts’ book is that it will keep me involved for the entire ride. I have read all of the “Lucky” books about Lucky O’Toole, who works as the “go to” person at the Babylon Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. This time, Lucky is dealing with her parents (that is an entire issue for Lucky), her fiancé Jean-Claude who is planning a trip to Paris for Lucky to meet his mother, her ex-lover Teddie who has suddenly reappeared in her life and visitors to the hotel/casino from the NFL who are moving a team to Las Vegas (sound familiar?). Of course, there is a murder involved and Ms. Coonts keeps you guessing throughout the book as she works to understand who committed the murder as well as protect the reputation of the hotel/casino. If you have not read the series, you could read this book and there is enough back story that you will understand the characters, but I would recommend you start with the first book, Wanna Get Lucky? I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to give an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Lucky Score by Deborah Coonts is the latest book in the Lucky series and you will NOT be disappointed in this latest “wacky-quirky-in your face-Vegas style-awesome addition to the already awesome series.” Lucky is spiraling downhill and I was worried about her, but, she seemed more human and when she realized she was not infallible, she became easier to understand. The characters in this series are so real and it’s fun to see them grow. There are laughs, tears, anger, murder, greed, and that was in the first chapter. Just when you think there is no solution, the puzzle pieces start to come together and WOW. Ms. Coonts has a way of making the characters and the situations very close to real life and while I usually like to “escape” the real world when I read, this is one book that I was ok with in facing reality through Lucky’s eyes. I was hooked from the first page and in my opinion, that’s an excellent book!! "I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher."
I’ve been a fan of Lucky and her crazy Vegas life since I read the first installment of Deborah Coonts’s series years ago. This new adventure doesn’t disappoint. It’s non-stop action from the beginning, with loads of twists and turns. Lucky is still the smart and savvy character she was at the beginning, but she’s grown a lot. She’s questioning her life and choices, and wondering how to move forward with more balance. Family takes more of a back seat in this new tale, though there are still appearances by all the usual suspects. Much as I enjoyed the characters and mystery of the book, I was equally enamored with the writing style of Ms. Coonts. Her use of words is a joy. She has a way of phrasing things that is quite lyrical. That in itself made the book a delight to read. I would definitely recommend this book, though I would suggest starting from the beginning of the series to truly enjoy the way the characters have grown. (I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.)
Deborah Coonts manages an amazing balancing act, giving me both the breakneck ass-kicking action surrounding Las Vegas's new professional football team and, at the very same pace, the family and romantic troubles Our Girl Lucky is going through. Although my first instinct was to tear through the book, Lucky’s thoughtful passages, which go just as quickly as the action ones, made me throttle back and consider, because from the beginning of this series I've cared about Lucky and want to know what’s going on with her. And yes, sometimes it’s just bad puns, but she's going through something more profound this time and she reaches a point where she feels exhausted/safe enough to confess to her lover Jean-Charles what she hasn't been able to admit to herself before. Throughout these books Lucky has been maturing and growing and I really appreciate that. Now if only Teddie, her ex-lover, would just leave her alone! He’s so self-centered.

Another amazing adventure with Lucky and her friends and family!
I am never disappointed other than when the story is on the last page. I really love Lucky, she is such a relatable character. I love that things are not always roses even though she is a highly paid executive working in her family business. Even though she is a "boss bitch", Lucky's problems are all so relatable to every single one of us. This installment of the Lucky files definitely does not disappoint. If you are looking for a good read, with very likeable and relatable characters, rolled up into a great fast paced mystery, then this is the book for you. I am enjoying watching as Lucky learns to deal with her demons and hopefully finds her happily ever after with her yummy chef. Just so you know - I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the author/publisher. I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a good read!
As a former resident of Las Vegas for many years, a great deal of the enjoyment I get from reading a Lucky book is the backdrop of Las Vegas. The author does a great job of capturing the essence of the town - the good, the bad, the ugly, the excessiveness, the magic, the fantasy and my favorite mention, the beautiful Chihuly glass! Thank you to the author for acknowledging the horrible mass shooting - an event that has forever impacted the history of Las Vegas. The sports memorabilia aspect in the book also keeps the story fresh and contemporary.
Lucky has a lot on her plate in this book! As if her personal life isn't in enough flux, the job is getting very complicated. A high-profile man in town appears in her hotel lobby wielding a knife and covered in blood - but the blood is not his. So where is the victim? WHO is the victim? From the opening paragraph, the pace of this book is as fast as Lucky's Ferrari! There are plenty of suspects and everyone seems to have their own angle.
The author's books are always well written and sophisticated - a quality read. I love the new cover art! As always, I'm looking forward to Lucky's next adventure.
This book started with a bang (well okay with a knife) and didn't let up until the last page. If you can't tell I really enjoyed this book and think this is Deborah's best Luck OToole book so far and really hope she has plans to release it as an audiobook too, as I will definitely be buying that version too.
Okay why did I like it so much.......as normal great characters but this time I really enjoyed the mystery and had no clue what was going on or what was going to happen next, it was also mixed in with some very funny moments that you just had to laugh at. Lucky and the gang have great problems keeping a casino running smoothly (keeping hookers out, NFL super star's happy) while at he same time solve a murder of a senator, which proves to be very hard when you don't know who to trust.
I inhaled this - I so love this series, and I so love Lucky!
Oh, my! I think the plot was even more convoluted than usual and all the random threads were in what appeared to be a hopeless tangle, colored by a lot of emotional up and downs due to a lot of close friends getting sucked into the drama. I also feel there was more philosophical pondering in this book than in the previous ones. The fact that she figured it all out after all (at much personal cost) despite being on a painful personal low in her life ...there is Lucky for everybody!
She is particularly endearing by being so eminently unassuming. I think of her as a real, beautiful, generous, loving, brave person with a great sense of humor, which is a deep bow to this wonderful author.
Lucky O'Toole is back in action, and feistier than ever in this novel, the latest in the fabulously fun Lucky O'Toole Las Vegas Adventures series. I couldn't put it down! If there was a rating higher than five stars, I would gladly give it to Lucky Score. A murder of a famous politician, the NFL moving to Vegas, and her friends are in deep trouble. So what's a girl to do? Solve the murder, figure out the crime spree, and save her friends, of course, all while up to her proverbial butt in alligators! Who can she trust? How can she solve this mess? No one knows how, but if Lucky can't figure it out, no one can! I did receive an advance reading copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Book nine in this series. Another all action packed story. This time the football league has made it to Vegas and all kinds of problems with them. There is so much going on, it's hard to tell who's doing what. It was a funny, fast pace run all over Las Vegas. Lucky trying to save the good guys and get rid of the bad guys. And in the middle of all that, Lucky's life is on hold. She can't figure out what she wants and she's drinking way too much, to hide the problems. Lucky gets so drunk, she wakes up to see Romeo and Jordan there. I would have liked to know what Lucky did the night before, but I didn't read anything that told that story. Just Romeo and Jordan telling her she sang. Maybe the next book will tell that story. On to book ten.
Since this is Vegas in present day, the writer included references to current events. (ie. the mass shooting at a concert in 2017, book published 2018) It made the location relatable as it showed how that event would have effected residents of the city. I appreciated that.
There's a new NFL team w/their coach in trouble over a dead Senator. Lucky is off & running again... She's reaching her breaking point with all that's happened both in her personal & work life. Also, I realize her parents mean well but name the twins. And I get that they're rich (ie. have staff), this is fiction & Lucky is the heroine but newborns...there's just not enough mentioned about them in my opinion.
With an NFL team moving to Vegas, the team's owner turning up in the hotel's lobby covered in blood and holding a large knife. The senator who was against the team moving there, his body is found with multiple stab wounds at a war game simulation area.
As if this isn't enough trouble, she also has the added stress of being engaged messing with her. Lucky has her hands full to say the least. She also has a new snotty security team member who believes he is above everyone else, including Lucy.
Now is not the best time to possibly be going through a midlife crisis,
Another great story with many twist, and some humor added in also.
Another superb Lucky adventure. NFL football is coming to Vegas and bringing with it a host of problems for Lucky and the Babylon. Sports stars, hookers, drugs, and murder. Lucky is on her own as Romeo is acting suspicious and doing shady things. Teddie is still trying to get in good graces, and Jean-Charles and the engagement on the back burner while Lucky is forced to investigate a murderer on her property, her head of security being taken over by a no name, and problems with her niece and mother. Drinking more, Lucky sinks and swims trying to get to the bottom of things before she hits rock bottom and might not survive with her life.
Another fantastic Lucky O’toole book. An NFL team is moving to Vegas, and they are staying at the Babylon. All that brawn in one place…what could possibly go wrong. A murder, a break and enter, and a suspicious new member of the security team. Just what Lucky doesn’t need right now. Teddy and Jordan are helping out, with a little bit of fashion assistance and Lucky might not be amused, but I laughed out loud. This book touches on some real world tragedies, and will make you stop and think of the bigger picture. Love this series of books, and this was another winning read.
I am addicted to this series! Lucky O’Toole does it all - VP of a major Vegas casino, fiancé of a delectable chef, & overall problem solver for all! She is extremely capable of defending herself even against NFL football players with her especially wicked elbow. The pace is so frantic as Lucky runs around trying to save those near & dear to her, tracking down stolen memorabilia, finding a killer, & untangling her conflicted love life! Stayed up till late at night to finish.
Lucky O'Toole isn't sure what's going on in her hotel and she doesn't like it. A man staggers into her lobby and dies and a Senator is implicated. It probably has to do with the football team coming to town which should be good for business but the players are causing more problems than they're worth. One of them is running a party out of her Secret Suite and Lucky knows nothing about it. Romeo, her cop friend and mentee, is keeping secrets. And then there's the fact that she's wondering whether her incomparable fiance is really the man for her.
Lucky is right in the thick of things when the NFL decides to move a team to Las Vegas. Big money in the NFL, but when one of the main players of the negotiations comes staggering in with a knife in him and blood on his hands....that is cause for alarm. Let's not forget the other things than Lucky has going on in her personal life also. Murder and mayhem, that's how Lucky rolls. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Lucky Score Book # 9 in the Lucky O’Toole Vegas Adventure—-
Football, Bright Lights, Gambling, and murder?
Lucky is back with an unexpected bloody scene in her hotel. When a man staggers into the Babylon with blood all over him, and a bloody knife. Who’s is it? That’s what Lucky will find out.
Lots of twists and turns in this book. So much and Lucky wants answers.
The one person who she thinks might be guilty might have just surprised her.
Her wound barely healed from her last adventure, Lucky finds herself entangled in the dirty dealings of politics and professional football. Reading a Lucky O'Toole novel is quite a literary rollercoaster. Deborah Coonts certainly knows how to weave a convoluted but tight story with a cast of characters who are over-the-top. Loved it...when does the next one come out? I received an advance copy of this book from the author and I am willingly giving this review.
Lucky O'Toole is back with her awesome narration, wittiness and the word 'scuttlebutt', along with me having some awesome chuckles along the way! I found some of the minor characters in this novel quite amusing at times; if you love humor mixed with a good crime story, pick this book up. I got an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
If you have never read the Lucky O'Toole series start with Lucky Score and you will be hooked. From the first page to the last page it is full of page turning mystery ,action and Luckys intriguing family dynamic all set in exciting Las Vegas were Lucky manages the Babalyon.
Great read Deborah. I was in suspense through the whole book.
I always enjoy visiting Las Vegas with Lucky. You see things through her eyes that you may or may not pick up on your own. This installment feels like a cross between a fever dream and a strong therapy session, in a good way. You never know what you are going to get with Lucky, but it is always good.
I have read every one of this series and thoroughly enjoyed them all.... this one is no exception. It is nice to see Lucky is still uncertain about Teddy, but we cannot make her decisions for her but I know who I would choose, Deborah, keep up the good work,.
