The ace in a pack of lies.

I'm doing my best to settle into life at the academy, and keep my secret under wraps. After all, I'm training for a future as a warden for the Agency of Magical Forces. Can't have a mass-murdering evil father as part of my pedigree. I still can't tell a rune from a rock, but life is good.

Until I discover a dead body in the river.

Before I know it, I'm thrust into an investigation to find the killer, which means using magic outside of my comfort zone. The more magic I use, the more I worry about succumbing to the dark side like my father. With the help of my new friends and the sexy vampire, Gray, I just might manage to live through it...if I'm lucky.

Outclassed : Spellslingers Academy of Magic, Warden of the West (Book 2) is a fantasy mystery with humor, action, a powerful heroine, and a fangtastic hero.

Mon avis en Français

My English review

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

The story deserves 4 stars but I removed one for the blatant blather about someone with the initials DT.

Sure you can write what you want, it's one of the great joys of an inkslinger, the harpooning of character types, but do so with aplomb and not just driviling snark.

One change would have made it 5 stars

Great story until the politics was added.

No need for the addition of the goblin, it threw the story off for me and I’m sure for others also

Sadly, Just poorly written

Unfortunately this book and series is going on my poorly written/badly edited shelf, don’t bother shelf. Spoilers warning folks:

It’s all too precious and easy. Our main character is a sorceress snatched off the river after rescuing a newly arrived home vet and his family. Whisked off to magic college that is just another boarding school (ala Howgwarts) where the MC is just scared everyone will find her deep dark secret that she is the daughter of (gasp) a dark wizard.
I don’t mind boarding school novels. I rather like them, but gah! It’s too easy.
Break into a dark Vampire’ secret auction with another shady (yet hart throbbingly gorgeous vampire)? Easy. How do we know he’s hot? Because we are reminded of it at awkward intervals and when women and girls fall over themselves to please him. Get caught by super bad vampire in his vault? No consequences. Steal a magic blood stone. She just has tea and has to go fetch a book. And the only drama on the trip is burying a Cave Troll and getting drunk while walking the streets of a cape cod like seaside village.

Need to manufacture some sort of magic to defeat bad monsters? No need for practice, this sorceress is so amazing she practically just has to wiggle her nose or bob her head and voila. Instant solution. (She’s Moses folks parting water at 4)
Magic blood that can make people do anything, survive any poison, and break any enchantment? Done.
Roommates that are not only kind and understanding, but are just in time for every rescue, and will help burry a demon’ body. Yup.

There isn’t any drama to hold the story. Life, is messy. People are mean, indifferent, complex, and at twenty something should not sound like high schoolers. There is little romance to hold interest. And I dislike lengthy exposition and internal dialogue that borders on whining “I’m so evil, look at my Dad.” Magic white owl (Harry Potter anyone) Icarus as the chorus “you are good. Trust your magic.” Lather, rinse, repeat, through Two books.

Finally. I get it. But a bit character named Donald Trumpkin a real estate goblin? Really?

I’m disappointed. If I could, I’d give this 2,5 stars.
The thing is: the good things about this book, kinda got shaded by the bad ones!

I really like the dialogues and the dynamic of the characters, but cmon, it’s that hard to remember things said in the first book?

Bryn’s roommates have each a familiar. Their names simply changed from book 1 (Coco, Pepper, Ariana) to book 2 (Clementine, Pepper, Haggis). What the heck???

Then my eyes rolled to the back of my head with the Goblin named Donald Thumpking (this greedy, jackass wife-cheater) I mean, really? I certainly don’t read fantasy books to be reminded of politics.

Also the main character is not 15, she’s is not 18, she’s 20 years old I think that drinking while you are on a mission to retrieve a rare and dangerous book it’s not really a smart move.
“Some say this book may be cursed.” “Oooh. Ok, hit me with the shots!! (Me, a non drinker)” face palm

Plus there’s the issue of Bryn’s power. The girl almost never used her magic out of fear of being discovered, but as soon as she is throw in the magical world she is this badass witch who can do crazy powerful magic without training! I love badass heroines, but it seems a little... well, non logical.

And don’t get me wrong (English is not even my first language) but there are a lot of typing/grammar errors... I liked the idea of this book, honestly. But the errors kinda killed my vibe...

At the end, not even cute Gray is enough to make me read the last one. I’m just gonna give the Sentry of the South a chance cause I really liked Dani and I hope things are better developed in her series.

Set in the same world as the Spellbound and Starry Hollow books, which I have devoured in a matter of 2 weeks, this trilogy (my review is for all 3 books in Bryn's trilogy) feels slighter darker and more gritty than the others and that is no bad thing. Bryn knows that she has magic but does not realise that there is an entire world which exists entirely of it living parallel to the human one. She finds herself rescued for a dangerous situation and in the Spellslingers school for magical training. There she takes neatly takes the place of a girl who led the school and finds herself on the path of future warden of the west, a concept we were introduced to in Spellbound. I am still hoping we get to find out more about that tie in. There are a couple small nods to the other towns in the magical world and it remains a fun one.

Bryn herself is a survivor and her whole character centres around this. From the very start she has to prove her worth and finds allies, but also enemies in unexpected places. The world has it's darker corners and Bryn gets to experience a lot of that. Her friendship with Gary, the troubled vampire, is a delight and I love that there is a slow burn of friendship before romance here. All in all a great read, I look forward to the next trilogy, although I am disappointed that we won't be continuing with Bryn's.

This is still popcorny fun, even though things do get more serious in this one for Bryn. She has to pay consequences for the fact that she stole something in the previous book. Which ties in to everything else that happens, and leads to more information and consequences in turn. Apparently people who trust you and care about you don't like to be lied to. And they have to come to terms with your betrayal of their trust in you. Who knew? (Though Bryn is PERFECTLY set up to be an untrusting character for reasons that actually are built-in and make sense, so I am not upset about it not fitting or anything.) It doesn't change the fact that the author, in addition to making Bryn's dad a Voldemort-y character, with a Voldemort-y name(!), also made a Donald Trumpish character with a Donald Trumpish name.

The silliness abounds in-world. Fun enough and easy read. Until I stop having fun, I will go ahead and keep reading these. I borrowed an anthology edition with all 10 books from Kindle Unlimited. I can stop at any point, but I also already have everything.

Outstandingly awesome

Outstanding awesome terrific what else can you say. A new magical world to delve into. If you like Harry Potter you need to read the series. It is basically a university in a magical world away from ours that students go to to learn to become protectors of the magical world and the real World from supernatural mishaps. Follow our characters as they journey through their time spell slingers college and all of the supernatural goings on in their world there.
This series is almost right up there with Harry Potter. I think any harry potter liver will like this series. I hope she continues riding this series for mini mini more books. Definitely a must read
I vote for at least a 25 book series. Make sure you get on her fan pages and let her know keep writing this series

Extra star for a superb comedy moment..

Bryn is still hiding her true potential and ancestry from her friends provoked by Theo Armitage though during a lesson she holds back the river only to reveal the body of a young man. Karl Muldoon, a human, had been staked to the riverbed after death.

Feeling guilty Bryn decides to investigate and returns to the scene where Theo goads her about her powers, culminating in a bet that if she can solve it first he'll shovel out the hellhound enclosure.. Bryn didn't need the extra encouragement but there's no way she's going to miss the opportunity to best him.

With the help of Gray, her roommates and Robin she's determined to crack the case and find a way to give his family peace.

Just watch out for the real estate goblin.. for a few laugh out loud moments that define 45 unerringly!! Vote.. the whole world is rooting for you!!

Chase does a great job of building on the world and characters established in the first book. Ember is a relatable and likable protagonist, and her struggles with her past and her growing magical abilities are compelling. The supporting characters are also well-developed, and the romantic tension between Ember and the vampire, Gray, is palpable.

The plot of Outclassed is fast-paced and exciting, with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers guessing. There is also a good balance of humor and heart, making for an enjoyable and engaging read.

Overall, Outclassed is a fun and satisfying sequel that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series.

Highlights:

Relatable and likable protagonist
Well-developed supporting characters
Fast-paced and exciting plot
Good balance of humor and heart

Better than the First

Better than the first book, but still lacking in character development. It feels like we've barely scratched the surface of these characters, and that is frustrating.

My biggest issue is the lack of description when it comes to the characters. When I read it's like a movie in my head and this has all the characters blurry-no descriptions of "green eyes flashing" or "pulled my frizzy brown hair back into a ponytail". This is just my pet peeve, but half the time I barely remember what the MC looks like. I like very descriptive books like Janet Evanovich and Kim Harrison.

I think the author could really flesh out her characters and add more descriptive parts to the book and it would really enhance her series.

Byrn has a major problem. She is worried that if she uses her magical abilities very much she will become evil like her father. But, she is in school and is expected to use her magical abilities. Some people are notices that she is holding back.

Early on there's a murder that she discovers. So she and Gray will be checking into that. If that was all her life would be manageable but then there are monsters appearing at the school, problems with her theft of one of her father's healing stones, her discovery of a type of magic she has that can be very, very dark, her isolation in a bunker, a missing chicken, a giant and her fear that she everyone has turned against her.

In other words, she has really major problems she has to solve. It's a very good addition to the series.

Bryn is still hiding her father and with it, her true magical potential from her friends and the school at large. The mystery in this book begins, when provoked by Theo Armitage during a magic lesson, Bryn parts the water of the river only to reveal the body of a young man, staked to the riverbed after death. Now, interested in who killed the human, Karl Muldoon, Bryn makes a wager with Theo Armitage over who will solve the murder first. With the help of Grey, her potential love interest, , her roommates and Robin, Bryn sets off to solve the crime.

Set in the same world as the Spellbound and Starry Hollow books, the crossover with Starry Hollow was fun. Overall a fun read and solid 3.5 stars.

Another great book in the Warden of the West series, featuring vibrant characters and an innovative system of magic, make this a fast pasted adventure. Annabel Chase is not a new author, but new to me and I can’t wait to start reading some of her other books, I can definitely see her becoming one of my favorite authors if they are as good as this one.

Outclassed is another great adventure/paranormal mystery from the Spellslingers Academy. Brynn is a snarky, fun character to follow as once again she investigates a murder on school grounds. The story moves quick with lots of action and danger for a fun, must finish it all at once, read. I love the chemistry between Brynn and Gray as the reader gets drawn into will they get together or not. Brynn's struggle not to turn evil proves just how good she is, even in the face of prejudice and danger. The cast of characters and the world building combine for a fantastic story that addicts and keeps you coming back for more.

Outclassed Outclassed the Competition!

Bryn Morrow is back! Bryn is goaded into using her powers by one of the instructors at Spellslingers. When she does, a gruesome discovery awaits.

Bryn is concerned; this is the second corpse she has found since coming to Spellslingers. With the help of her roommates, and the vampire, Gray, Bryn is determined to find and stop the murderer of innocents. But at what cost?

Another winner from Annabel Chase! Action packed, intriguing plot twists, and smoldering tensions between Bryn and Gray keeps your attention until the last word! Loved it!

This book shows much more promise than the first book in the series. It's still relatively weak YA, but at least the writing is less Everything ex Machina.

That said, the reactions of the main and supporting characters seem to be described as if by aliens observing people without any actual understanding of how people work.

The plot is better, but the obligatory evil (oh, so evil) antagonist is revealed without much in the way of foreshadowing or actual evidence. The fight sequence is at best mediocre. And the "like interest" is pretty laughable.

Not recommended, but perhaps after a few more writing exercises the author might come up with something actually interesting.

A story of friendships, secrets and overcoming your worse nightmare. Bryn's secret is out and she has learned a lesson of what keeping secrets do to friendships and enemies. A powerful untrained witch has much to learn about trust and acceptance. It doesn't matter who your father is, as long as you don't take after him. A human is murdered on the grounds of the academy, followed by several other strange occurrences that lead Bryn to uncovering a murderer. Its a fun read and has interesting characters and plot.

Next book please

This book was just as good as the first. I am looking forward to the third in the series. The characters are becoming closer. I love Gray! The sub plot isn't being drawn out which is very good. I don't think my original hope for a connection to the Spellbound series is going to work out. Although I do have a new one. I did love the visit to another town and other characters. Those ghosts at the inn I bet have a unique tale of their own. Or at least good for some sneaky meddling with their guests.

Brilliant!!

Annabel Chase never fails to disappoint. This is the second book in the Spellslingers Academy series, (best read in order)!where we follow Bryan Morrow as she attempts to navigate life in the paranormal world having been brought up in the human world (Terrene), in hiding, from an evil magical father, a secret kept from everyone. Yet again Bryn is out to solve a murder in the academy grounds, with obstacles along the way. I cannot recommend this series highly enough as with all of Annabel’s books, brilliant!!!

The sins of the father

Awesome. Things have settled down and although she is using some magic, she is trying to limit how much and the strength. When she is goaded into a display, she uncovers a body. How did a human come to be killed on the school grounds and by whom? Ancient books, demons, power hungry individuals are mixed into a tale that has her looking for a killer, learning more about her father and disclosing her birthright. Will this mean that all will turn against her? Terrific look at the characters and how they relate to each other.

Seriously!! Just Bad Taste!!

I was really enjoying every book so far in this series. I gave 5 stars, but REALLY you have to get all political in a PARANORMAL BOOK??? You ruined the book for me. If I wanted to read about political subjects then I can guarantee you I wouldn't be reading this book. This is my time to go into the fantasy part and get AWAY FROM ALL THIS POLITICAL JUNK!! It's everywhere it DOESN’T NEED TO BE IN A mystery crime solving book!!! I am beyond disappointed.
