The Scrolls of Gideon

Rate this book
It's NOT safe to go back in the water...

After a promise gone horribly wrong, Gideon Black has sworn off doing favors for people. But when the mysterious Lady Tethys offers him a house -- a home of his own for the first time in his life -- in exchange for retrieving an artifact, he agrees.

Unfortunately, the artifact is at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean with a ship that went down four hundred years ago.

To get to the wreck, Tethys arranges passage for Gideon and his friends with Captain Alex Walsh. But when they board the ship, they find that the crew not only know about and distrust Others, but are armed with cold iron weapons, one of the few things that can kill a Fae. And the captain is looking for any excuse to use them.

Then they reach the dive site, and things go from bad to worse when the ship is attacked by something far more dangerous than humans with cold iron.

Gideon has promised that he will do a favor for Lady Tethys -- who says that she's a friend of Gideon's mother -- in exchange to the big house that now currently the residence of Gideon and co. The favor is to retrieve her ancestor (who has been for hundreds of years) from the bottom of the ocean.

No biggies, right? Of course neither Taeral nor Sadie thought it is a good idea; there must be something behind this request! So alongside the golem Grygg, they accompany Gideon on this retrieval mission.

Color me happy *sigh*. I was so excited with the release of this novel and I was even happier that the book delivered another GREAT adventure of Gideon Black and his friends -- this time it involved mermaids, and at one point KRAKEN!

Yes, of course, Gideon is facing danger ... but in my perception is not as bad as previous books (hey, at least he wasn't horribly tortured!) In addition, we get MORE information about Milus Dei organization...

Oh, and Gideon GAINS HIMSELF

I really loved this book, but I also had a feeling that the end is near somewhat? I hope it's not. I hope it's just the first arc and maybe it will continue with different story altogether. I have too much fun with Gideon and the gang...

A whole lot of smirking going on

The plot was fine. Another segment of magical stuff, legend, heroics and so on.
But the writing was weaker. Gideon smirked, a lot. The fae affected a folksier manner of speech.
Altogether, the quality was lower, as if the plot had been workshopped and a student or similar had written it to a deadline.
unlikely it a free book, granted, but that’s the feel.

Once again this was a fun and quick story in the adventures of Gideon Black. It was so good to be back in this world again and we were at sea this time! Gideon's narrative was so familiar that is was easy to slip back into this story and I didn't forget characters or story lines from previous books.

My only criticism is that the end seemed to be wrapped up too quickly and conveniently so that took me away from the story a little bit. Nevertheless, I'm really looking forward to seeing what else Sonya Bateman has in store for these characters, especially Eli who I miss a lot!

I wish I could have read this in one sitting but I had work and life. But this whole series is definitely binge-worthy and entertaining so I'd highly recommend it.

-5 stars. i enjoy this fast paced series. the story moves right along and it's hard to put the book down.

"the bad news is we can't use their escape plan. they had a beacon to send for some rescue boats, but it got destroyed when the ship went down."
"is the good news that you have a waterproof helicopter up your ass?"

"well guys, how about it? on the one hand, there's probably torture and gruesome death for us..."

"goddamn it! does anyone else feel like we're stuck in the flying fish level on super mario brothers?"

"even if you are a stubborn old man who won't let me save his life."
"yeah, thanks for telling me everything for once. even if you are a stubborn punk kid who won't take a nice normal job that won't get you killed, like accounting."

Great story

A few more curveball revelations in this book, of course, as well as a completely different setting for the main adventure and some new characters.

I love that each of these books is, for the most part, a complete story with a distinct resolution, while there is still the underlying menace lingering in the background.

Hopefully, Gideon and his friends are getting closer to defeating the main bad guy(s) soon, though I would be okay with it taking a few more books to get there as I am certainly enjoying the journey!

CANNAE WAIT FOR THE NEXT

I love Sonja Bateman's books.. However this series has had me hooked from the first chapter of the first book. I don't leave reviews unless the book is really good or really bad. This series is Fantastic! I have cried, sat on the edge of my seat, and laughed a lot! I am thrilled she was able to get back to writing and eagerly await the next. I just don't want the series to end. Maybe she will write another good Fae series??? Yes?! Another job well done Sonja.

This is the seventh book in (Vertex DeathSpeaker Coded )

This was another great read this Author packs so much into each of their books that it's amazing . In this one we find out a lot about the organization what they are and their origins what their purpose was suppose to be but what they had become . We also find out more about Gideon his mother and the circumstances in which his parents met we also find out that Gideon 's mother had been married before she met Gideon's father and also had a daughter by her previous husband .

Another Great Addition

If you are not reading the DeathSpeaker series, then you are missing out. I love that the bad guys are cunning and intelligent because you never see them coming. This time the deathspeaker, and his family and friends are trapped at the bottom of the Ocean surrounded by cannibalistic mermaids and only twelve hours to live.

Very satisfying!

Wow, this was a very busy story! Gideon and company are sent on a quest, by a mysterious witch, that takes them to the bottom of the sea. Milus Dei is still doing its best to wipe them all out but our intrepid heroes don't intend to go quietly. In fact they don't intend to go at all, not when they can make the other guys go first.

She did it again! I really enjoy Sonya's Death Speaker Codex and I was so glad to get my hands on this one. I finished it in one sitting. Thank you for such a well written book! I was not able to write a review without revealing the details and hence such a cryptic review.

ugh, LOVE! I fervently wish these were longer! It'd been a while since I read the last book so it took me a minute to recall everything that happened prior, but goodness wasn't it wonderful to have so many curiosities addressed?! I look forward to seeing what happens next!

Fun. Volume 7

The character development is continuing. The story rolled out nicely, though I believe we're reaching a natural conclusion fairly soon.

Good!

So... If you are a fan of the Deathspeaker, then you will love it. If you aren't, then you need to read the first 6 books first, and I highly recommend that you do so.
