So this ended weirdly, why so abrupt?

The past four books have literally been the same thing happening over and over again, I had no issue with it because Debbie Cassidy writes in such a way it seems I'm having the experience(s) anew, so I was not concerned that it took four books to get us to this point, I would have been fine if this book went different but nooo stupid things had to happen.

The way it ended leaves a lot to be desired, I don't understand what kind of rushed ending that was, if I could sit through five books of nothings then there should have been a better way to end this series. I had read all the spoilers before starting this book so I knew what to expect, the way it was executed though. Really? especially in a book where no one ever dies, you think someone is dead, surprise, they are alive somehow in book two, so I don't get it, especially it happening out of the blue like that. por qué.

The epilogue, I legit wanted to fling the book away, if I had the hard copy I totally would have. I know this is Reverse Harem but I don't care about the kind of gravitational pull Serenity has because really really?! That alone moved this book from a 3 star to a 2.5.

Hashtag dead
Hashtag bye

warning: this lousy review is going to be very spoilery with lots of spoilery spoilers.

Savior of Midnight was both over and underwelming. And while I'm giving it the full stars, I did not like it that much.
I probably barely even liked it.

1. Firt thing first: this series is incredible and Debbie Cassidy is an amazing storyteller.
I might not have throughfully enjoyed this book, it didn't really matter at the end; i was hooked from the first to the last page.

2. The universe is very complex and there are still so many things that can be said and told about it.

3. It's action packed, a roller coaster of feels, with love, friendship, trust, drama and hot sex. It had everything but yet it wasn't perfect.

(here we go)

4. The relationships that i adored in the past couple of books are barely inexistant. Sure, they don't really have the time for all the beautiful moments I was desperately waiting and they're pretty much already all together since book 4.

5. Orin was barely present and I really felt is absence. He's cute, adorable and sweet and was the only character that brought those traits. I need my sugary sweetness dose.

6. Serenity was not as endearing as she was. But let's not really make it a point because I don't know why.

7. seriously, don't read those spoilers if you're not done with the series.

8. same thing, cause it's epilogue talk.

9. And why did it have to end?
The ending felt a bit rushed but it was both because so many thing happened and because I really didn't want to see the final sentence. It was a wonderful story. Thank you for giving us the chance to read it.

Thank you Debbie for providing me this ARC and breaking my heart~

(ARC received with thanks so I thought it best I review - even in unfavourable light regrettably )

It might end up being more of a rant apologies in advance
first off if you're reading this before reading the book stop right now this will contain many many spoilers of epic proportions so don't do it!

second let me also say this is one of my favourite RH series (its future in my top 5 remains to be seen)
I'm being generous with the stars because of it, I'm rounding up instead of down from 3.5

Let's start shall we;

I am no literally genuis or author I have no experience writing anything save my own useless thoughts on the odd book, but in my humble opinion there were too many ends to tie up here and not enough time to do it in. Yes we did get it tied up in a bow but the bow was a little messy

like someone gave it to the dog to chew on and let a 2 year old tie it
- kinda bow

There wasn't enough time to spend on the characters we loved (Orin dropped off the face of the earth) and the introduction of new ones we didn't even like (Adamah) in order to tie up those ends left me completely unsatisfied. I am glad Ryker got his moment but again it was too quick!

convoluted explanations left me exhausted - all in order to tie up those ends again!

Rivers - I weep for you, You were my favourite and you deserved better even if I understand the reason it needed to happen - stupid ugly bow

and finally the thing that really made me rage
THE EPILOUGE

Epilogues are for things like "6 months later I was pregnant and we all lived happily ever after"
NOT to add a character with the best potential into the Harem with no backstory at all and pretend like we are gonna be happy with that! I don't understand the need to write that in,
why..why...whhhhyyy?! So he couldn't get his own standalone story like we all wanted?? I would have been happy with him falling for her if it had been built up over books 4 and 5 but it was so totally out of the blue it was ridiculous!

Some of these ends should have been tied up in previous books and not left until the very end, it would have made it more satisfying instead of rushed and left me with the good feelings instead of the rage

Fare thee well Midnight it was an epic journey just not a satisfying end

I wanted a bit more from this ending!

Unfortunately, this was a bit rushed. There were some loose ends and some plots had so much potential but were left hanging, that it is a bit annoying.

I have some questions left and I wanted a lot more form this book, this last book in the series.

Yes, the world continues, there are more series (and I will definitely try them), but I loved Cassidy so much, and I loved her guys so much, that I can't help but feel a bit disappointed in this ending.

Anyway, it is still a series worth reading, or at least an author worth trying. It's the first time I read this chick, but she's awesome! I'm definitely going back for more.

I really liked book 1. The series looked so promising. I didn’t like book 2 as much but I still wanted to find out what would happen. And so I bought book 3. And then I bought book 4. But I have to say that with each succeeding book, starting with book 3, I found myself losing interest in the MC’s. I found the plot twists and turns too convoluted as the series progressed. But I liked some of the characters and wanted to find out what would happen to them.

And now we’re here with book 5 and I’m just bleh about what’s happening in this world, to the MC’s. So much is happening story-wise but in a confusing, very complicated, and not appealing way. At least not to me.

I wish things were more straightforward. I wanted more feels. And more importantly, I didn’t like how the romantic relationships turned out. Some things just got a little too weird.

That being said, if there will be a next book or a spin-off, I’m not interested in continuing anymore. Sorry to the fans.

I'm sorry WHAT???! Death was just thrown into her harem at the end and her relationship with most of the guys in her harem were nonexistent. Bane seemed like the primary one where you can actually see the connection they have. The ending seemed rushed and killing off Rivers, really? There was still a lot left unanswered and for someone who was supposed to "save" everyone, Serenity didn't do much in the end the others basically saved everyone. I feel like I wasted my time reading the whole series to get to that kind of ending >:(

Debbie Cassidy writes such good novels. She is erudite with a wonderful ability to create new and innovative worlds. Her characterisations are stellar and credible, with tough no nonsense, capable heroines. I’m going to go straight on to her new Arcana series established around the same world as Midnight. I can’t wait to get sucked in.

Well, this is the end to a very good series and I'm sorry to say this, but it was a rather disappointing one.
There were so many secrets coming to light and and so many good interesting plot lines, that could've made the series great if only they were explored. But it constantly felt as though we were late somewhere and needed to rush to get there. I did not like it.
The Lucifer/Bane situation resolved way too easily, the Drayton/Xavier one was mentioned in passing, but never truly explored and I really wanted to see the new dynamic between them all. And, about things mentioned in passing, the only hint I got about Serenity and Xavier being a thing is that one sentence in the epilogue. Same as with her and Death! Who adds new members to the harem all the way back in the epilogue? I feel like I've been robbed.
The Adamah was a good plot twist I did not expect, but again - it never went anywhere. We never explored it.
(Also, I really hoped that someone would kill Lilith in this one)

To sum things up, I loved this series and every book in it, I loved the characters and I loved the writing, but I'm absolutely dissatisfied with the way the finale was executed. I think, no I know, that it could've been so much better.

Wow, just wow

What an incredible world and journey these five book are! I am so sad about Rivers, but very glad about Drayton and Bane...and even Death. Who knew? Well, he did keep staring when he first got there, so I was confused when he chose to be bound to someone else. Still after he willingly told her how to bind herself to the others, I just had a feeling.

This ... was a horribly disappointing culmination to the series. Little to no character development, basically zero believable romance, and an entirely pointless death in an attempt to lazily wrap up the storyline. If I'd known this was what I could anticipate, I would have skipped the entire series.

This one was a real mixture for me. Something happened about 35 pages in that had me literally squealing with delight and then in the last 30 pages I was open mouthed...and not in a good way.

I want to start by saying that I LOVE this series as a whole. I would highly recommend it to fans of Urban Fantasy who like a Reverse Harem aspect, too. Debbie Cassidy is a talented writer, who has created an interesting and complex world, with elements of originality that are hard to do these days, especially in such a saturated genre.

However, upon immediately finishing this book, I was disappointed with the ending.

I have always thought the books need to be a good 50-70 pages longer. I know with the rate writers are having to churn books out that the shorter length is something that works for this, but I feel that with the extra page time we could see the characters and their relationships develop so much more, and therefore their interactions become so much more rewarding.

There was some minor development within the harem, but not much. A few conversations/interactions, but not enough page time devoted to the impact of this. I feel like a lot of the development of the relationships happened off-screen, which is a shame, as one of the author's strengths are the characters she created.

The first 4 books have all built to the showdown with Asher and I ultimately found that showdown underwhelming, but it's hard to go into more detail with out going into spoilers. The writer made a decision with a important character who had the most time devoted to their development in this book and I don't think it was the right decision, and if she was going for the redemption/can't live with myself route, then it didn't work for me. I don't think it will be a popular decision either, so I wonder what purpose it really served.

The epilogue...yeah, I didn't like that and the developments in it. Although I do want to know what happens next...

Saying all of that I thought the series as a whole was excellent and was an enjoyable ride. The characters were fantastic and I look forward to reading the spin off.

The fact that I wish there was another book to tell us what happened next, and that I would go and read it immediately, sums up my feeling really, despite the issues I had with this book. We want more!!!

I was kindly given an ARC for an honest review.

SO.MUCH.WASTED.POTENTIAL!

It's easy to start a story but harder to tie everything up in a satisfying end. Overall, the author was too ambitious to introduce so many characters and side plots, it's all a big mess. Story would do better if plots were more concise. Things were tied up hastily while some side plots were never even given a conclusion (what happened to Dorian? There was no mention of Harker's sister at all). Some mistakes were made causing continuity to be jarring, magic system was also a mess with the author making up whatever rules that suited the plot.

I actually like the characters and the world the author created. Just need a tighter plot and LETONEOFMYFAVGUYSTAY urgh.

Spoilers

This was a very exciting conclusion to the series. Unfortunately it just didn't do it for me. I have major issues with the pacing of this book and even the 1just before it; they felt very rushed which is unlike the first 3 books in the series. On the flip side, all the action was a natural progression to the grand finale... the problem is that it wasn't quite as well written in the sense that instead of feeling like I was diving into the scene w The characters, I felt more like I was clinging for dear life on a speed train towards the conclusion. It was Still a well written book you just have to like a ton of quick action scenes interspersed w waiting a few moments in the parlor for the next round!
We get bane back but we do lose a character that was more flushed out in this book. A lot of the 1 on 1 character scenes talked about personal feelings rather than the sex one might expect from a reverse harem but that is still in accordance w a romance. Death is an intriguing figure in this book as well which was something I had looked forward to from the 4th installment. Similarly, there was the character Adamah who is God's son\creation. you'll also find a crazy experiment done by a mad scientist called genesis that really peaked my interest but that I'm sad to say only got a few chapters- still cool though.
Spoiler: the ending has everyone waiting for the sun to come up; it has them just waiting to see what the outside world has in store for them. although the story has its conclusion, this is a cliffhanger of its own so be forewarned. I have come to the conclusion that there are other books written in this universe however, and I have no doubt there is more if anyone is interested in delving into the world outside of Arcadia.

Savior of Midnight was a classic case of building up a story and a character well enough only to struggle with how to tie it all together for a satisfying conclusion.

As each book progressed in this series, Serenity becomes more and more of a special snowflake. I just kept seeing this power bloated character who is all so important only to be left hanging for the crucial part of pay off. It really seems unfair the way the end fight of two seconds played out. The big face off between Asher and Serenity, it's so weak. The one time I wanted her to get all that spotlight and specialness is dominated by something so.. unnecessary. And the way she was ready to accept the strike from Asher, what the fuck? Serenity who is impulsive and reckless was ready to take the hit and call it a life. What a lame hollywood move.

After finishing the whole series, I can finally judge the reverse harem aspect of it since it's only in this book that we see some cohesiveness as a harem without having unresolved feelings in the way except for Rivers. The Lucifer/Bane situation is resolved in the most copout manner I could imagine. As I had doubted, that shit was introduced way too late in the series because it's resolution feels rushed and done in a snap like yeah tick it off a checklist situation. Dray/Xavier feels forced to fit in a puzzle sacrificing character consistency when it comes to Xavier like can you scream conveniency any louder with all of that?

The thing that happens with Rivers is what makes me sure that this is an unsatisfactory series for a reverse harem for me. If that wasn't enough, the epilogue with Death as a passing mention member of her harem is just too much. The only reason I gave this a two stars rating is its urban fantasy aspect of the series but RH was not great. The pay off is just not there with that epilogue just reinforcing how disappointing the conclusion was.

well that was a sad ending

Spice: 2/5

Overall a great series. I love the characters and the action. It’s very fast paced, so beware. Strong FMC but very little smut.

My heart is totally broken now because of the ending.

Sorta abrupt ending. I mean in the last couple pages a whole new relationship was discovered and just glossed right over. The end fight wasn’t as big as I assumed it would be. Seems like a lot of people gathered together for not much of anything. I wish we’d seen more of them entering the out side world.

To be honest, I expected more. I honestly can't be the only one that wanted to know about Xavier and Dayton finally getting together with Serenity. Nor the budding romance between her and Death. Or wtf why did Rivers die??? Like was that necessary? Not rly.

It was kinda disappointing. It just sorta ended. Barely any closure.

SAVIOR OF MIDNIGHT was a decent ending to an enjoyable series.

There were a lot of ups and downs in SAVIOUR OF MIDNIGHT. Some good parts, some bad parts.

I want to talk about the romance. I wanted more out of SAVIOR OF MIDNIGHT in that department. I felt like a lot happened behind the scenes and I would have rather it had happened on page. I kinda felt jipped and seeing as this is a paranormal romance/reverse harem series It would have been nice if that was the focus of things.

The world was great in this series. It is very complex, but I didn't feel lost in it. I enjoyed its many parts and the way they worked in the story. There was plenty of action in previous books and the final book. I felt that the final showdown was a little lackluster after the lead up, but it accomplished the final task.

Overall I am satisfied with how the Chronicles of Midnight series progressed. I am glad I read the series and plan to read more from this author.

I'm speechless...

How could Debbie Cassidy make that happen? It was torture reading about it. It almost made me cry. I have a bittersweet feeling with that ending. It disappointed me as in my mind I didn't think that was going to happen, so those feelings are just because I believed something else was going to happen. That was really an unexpected plot twist.

Serenity is at the end. Her and the people of Midnight need to stop Asher before he gets full control of his powers. It will take a lot of power and sacrifices on her side to make sure that the winged and the residents or Arcadia are safe.

2.5 stars. I know I know, how did we end up here. This last book when all the revelations were supposed to be made just did not do the series justice. I mean the whole book dragged, really, until the last chapter or maybe even the last couple of pages and then bam the end. Sooooo anticlimactic. Not only that but also once again right at the end we have a new development machines that break down neph DNA into goup. I mean really you cant throw that crap in at the last dang second. Also instead of any real closure we just get another disappearing act. Im just fed up. I feel like this book was almost a waste of my time and Im still left with so many questions.

Notes:

🔸Plot and writing style

Quite a nice story, it had so much potential...

In this last book, all the plot twists and surprise revelations...were too much, too quickly, too messy.

The confrontations were a bit of a let down. All the suspense and all I could think was "that's it?! That was quick..."

Everything was too much centered on the FMC and depending on her and on how special she is.

All these books are on the short side and the plot is always fast paced.

Overall the information given was mostly confusing and unclear and only after reading several books can one understand some basic notions that are usually given and understood in the first book.

There doesn't seem to be a deep connection to the characters and a lot of scenes are just quickly dealt with, very straightforward.
Which, on the plus side, doesn't give the reader a heartache but it also lacks passion.

A nice story, nevertheless.

🔸 Groups:

- Humans: used to deal with the scourge, but some, afraid and wanting security, aligned themselves to a house (Sanguinata or Lupin) signing a binding contract to belong to them.

- Black Wings: +- fallen angel, powerful, distant, only seen from afar.

- Nephs: descendants from Black Wings and humans, have powers

- Protectorate / MPD: powerful Nephs, the last line of defense against the monsters.

- Midnight Enforcement Department: the human police in Midnight

- Scourge: group of rippers that usually attack the district once a month, hunting humans

- The Sanguinata: +- vampires, aka the house of Vitae

- The Lupin: +- werewolves, aka the house of Mort

- The order of Merlin: humans with magic(?)

- The Breed: +-beastly shifters(?) full of rage and wild

- Shades: beings made of shadows that can take over an host body

🔸Romance

So...
Quite the ups and downs.
Too many things, too quickly.
There wasn't enough time to assimilate things.
Some relationships did need more time.
The whole book needed a deeper emotional connection and the romance part of it wasn't immune.

I am not gonna lie, the whole harem was a messy confusion.
Maybe too many members?
- There were relationships that happened and we didn't see it, but then there they were. Some that came out of nowhere and others that were signs but, still, it would have been nice to see.
- I was disappointed when one relationship didn't happen. That character slowly stopped showing and interacting with Serenity (cue, the first one to save her in Midnight)
- My heart did break a little for the sweet, tortured inquisitor.
- one of the guys, part of the harem, basically stopped showing. I get it they needed the other one to lead in the fight but the whole sharing thing...it needed more time to see it happening and for Serenity to create a bond with them.

It all just gave me the feeling the author wrote about a lot of guys that had the potential to become part of her harem, sure one or another were guaranteed but the author just made it more concrete depending on how the story was going.

This story had the potential to be quite angsty but it was all very lightly delivered.
Which also gives the impression the connections needed more passion, more time and interactions.

Heads up, contains spoilers and may turn into a rant. Another series finished and another one I don’t need to keep track of. Pulled a late nightery to read the final book and went to sleep feeling frustrated and a little ragey. Overall I give the series 4 stars, can’t fault the world creation, character building or the writing style, the author knows how to tell a story and suck you in. So keeping in with that I gave this one a 4 but the ending I give a 3. It didn’t feel rushed apart from the epilogue, which I’ll come back to, but it did make me go WTF and was pretty much a mess.

So going from a little biblical to Adam and Eve, the story pretty much forgets the OGs and goes for the newest characters turning into a hunt Asher battle that ultimately gets my favourite character killed. Its pretty much hooking up with Orin and then achievement attained, Orin is no longer needed. Of course Cassie is still in the group with her secret hate and digs.

I felt sorry for Lucifer and their attitudes towards him. Xavier got excused so why not Luci? It felt a little bullyish and it was one of the times I didn’t like Serenity.

So Rivers was the biggest character in need for love and redemption and he gets killed. I mean seriously it felt like only one dual personality was allowed in the harem and Drayton/Xavier got picked.

I’m not sure how I feel about the guys forcing Serenity to kill a shade. It was one of the more shocking scenes and made the guys seem cruel, whilst Serenity was an indecisive damsel in distress. It felt like pretty much emotional manipulation because she couldn’t make up her mind.

The worst part of the story was the epilogue. It felt rushed and had zero explanation. Xavier pretty much didn’t have a choice if she wanted to stay with Drayton but Death, Where the heck did that come from? A little more explanation would’ve been nice. So yeah enjoyed the series, loved most of the guys but the harem was questionable.

Great series...

This whole series had me on the edge of my seat. I've read a lot of these kinds of books and I always tend to find atleast a few flaws in the lead female that doesn't always sit right with me. They all start out one way and end up becoming a character that I hate but Serenity her character stayed the same throughout the whole series. She grew into herself and she didn't annoy me. It was refreshing. I like how she didn't just jump into bed with all her men in the first book like most RH books tend to do. She made them work for it. I loved all the men. Ryker, Orin, Drayton, Bane, and River's. I I was sad when Drayton was believed to be dead but I knew he would come back when they never found his body. But It was Rivers/Reapers death that really through me for a loop. I really didn't see that coming and it broke my heart cause he struggled with his diamon the most out of all her men. He sacrificed himself for her and his friends. Another thing about this book is the Lilith character. Every book that I've read so far that has had this character has written her as someone to fear. But the Lilith in this book has fad a few verbal smackdowns from the main female character. Then it turns out that the Lilith in this book wasn't a fighter at all which is so not like any other Lilith you would read about in these kinds of books. Another thing and I'm just throwing this out there because it was another thing that caught me off guard. Is that Serenity ended up adding Death and Xavier to her all male group. I really did not expect that to happen. Mind-blowing 6 men even if two share the same body. That's a workout for anybody and I'm glad it worked out for her. I can't wait to start on the next connecting series.

As far as series endings go, this wasn't as catastrophic as HBO's Game of Thrones adaptation, but it still left me with a bitter taste.

The battle to defeat Asher continued on various fronts and the final answers to make sense of the world-building were revealed. But the romantic connections still didn't spark for me and the ending we got was an unpalatable mix of rushed and too-open.

Looking back, I can say that the relationship development was severely lacking and the weakest point overall. The only one of the guys that ended up feeling like a true love interest (maybe because he had the most scenes with Serenity) was Bane. Drayton disappeared from the roster after his not-death, Orin and Ryker were more like BFFs than anything else, and Rivers felt too broken and too unreachable to develop anything long-lasting with.

Ambrosius unceremoniously bit the dust, and so did Adamah, the guy they'd rescued from the Wild Hunt in book two presumably disappeared between the stacks of one of the libraries—since we never heard from him again. The girl from The Order was left anchored to Death—, and we have no clue what the end result of the "free will" experiment (which was the thing the whole premise and world of this series was built on) even was.

I really enjoyed Debbie Cassidy's writing style (with all the jokes, wit, and fast pace), so I may check out some other of her series. But I'm not pleased with how this one ended.

SPOILERS ::::

I am a little mad, not mad dissapointed more.

The fight for midnight and against Asher continues and while everyone band together what I loved the last fight left me extremely sad and the ending too.
Rivers was a favourite of mine, his dual personality with the reaper and his vulrebility, these two completely opposite characters and while his ending finally both working together becoming one as Rivers and The Reaper was beautiful it was also sad because he dead, and that pisses me off.. I was oke with it, maybe because they became one. untill the epilogue.

All of a sudden Death is a part of Harkers little Harem... okay?? Really why? because they share a part essence? and then there are Xavier and Drayton, I loved Drayton from book 1, his sweet nature and while Xavier helped out in the last book I rather have seen Xavier and Drayton die than Rivers. now the Shayde is also a part of her Harem because hey! He shares a body with Drayton. and Bane he came back to his true self, just with different looks.

I know I wont agree with all endings of the books I read, but I can't really understand this one. Also the title of the book Savior of Midnight should not go to Harper because she did not save it. It should go to Rives and Ademah, they are what saved the world . I love the Series as a whole , just I wished more from the end. Now if you will excuse me I am gonna mourn some more.
