Like all of the Somerset Studio compilations / topical collection volumes, Transparent Art is very, very light on the how-tos. It should really just be considered a "look book", where artists already fairly fluent in mixed media techniques can get ideas for using transparencies in their pieces. And when I say "transparencies", I literally mean pretty much only transparencies. While there are many other transparent or translucent materials one could include in their artwork – glass, acrylic, plexiglass, mica, vellum, shrink plastic, resin, organza, etc. – Transparent Art barely touches on any of them, favoring plain ol' office supply store transparencies (mostly home computer-printed, but editor Angela Cartwright's commercial line is also lightly shilled). Additionally, be forewarned that all of the sample art is rendered in the fairly homogeneous and distinctly recognizable vintage / shabby chic style ubiquitous in all Somerset Studio publications.

Still, this is a very pretty book, which includes lots of ideas that will definitely spark creativity while giving at least a vague idea of the process and materials that were used to create the featured works. When it was first released, it listed for something like $22.99, which I cannot say is justifiable; I bought it for $1.99 during one of Somerset Studio's big yearly clearance sales, and new copies are available for under $10 through Amazon sellers.
