Review:
Black Kiss is the first book in the new series Obsession Inc. by Dori Lavelle. Ms. Lavelle is nothing short of brilliant when creating a gripping, engaging, kind of frightening dark romance. While I certainly adore her lighter romances, I also cannot stay away from her dark side writing.
Black Kiss starts off with Emma Stanton working as a hotel cleaning person for the Baroque Hotel. I found it interesting that she goes into the staff room, a small TV is showing an Obsession Inc. commercial, urging women in abusive relationships to reach out for help. (Obsession Inc. is this series title…. interesting… a bit of foreshadowing perhaps?). Emma gets the opportunity to work on the front desk the same day that the film crew comes into town to begin the shooting of “Ragged Waves” written by non other than Dax Pierce (a major crush of Emma’s). They need three extra’s for the filming… now how can Emma swing this? She so wants to get out of town and maybe this is her chance?
“I blow out a sigh. I can’t even remember the last time I was interested in a man, not that I ever allow myself to fall in love with anyone. Every time things got serious with a guy, I pulled away. It must be the fear of falling in love with someone in this town and getting stuck here forever. I want to fly in an airplane, to see the world, to go on exciting adventures. I don’t want to fall in love with some guy whose idea of happiness is settling down in Mistport.”
As a result of the audition, Emma is one of the three people chosen to be extra’s in the movie. From there, she decides that Hollywood is her destiny and moves – after all – she did give up her job at the Baroque Hotel for the opportunity to audition for “Ragged Waves”. Lucky for her she got one of the three extra parts.
Fast forward a year, where Emma has been in Hollywood – getting the occasional small acting gig, waitressing and working the front desk at a hotel – all to make ends meet. And then one night Emma gets a call from Dax’s chauffeur – Dax wants to have dinner with her. And then he continues to tell her he got her a part in his next movie, “Velvet Flame”, as his lover. Now that certainly got my attention. In fact, that made me very uneasy. Why that did not make Emma nervous, I do not know. Then she has to audition…. which is a VERY sexy scene. Whew is all I have to say.
The story tracks the rise of Emma and her relationship with Dax. As each page is turned, it seems the story gets darker and darker. What a controlling man Dax is. To me…his behaviour is truly frightening. What I wonder is why Emma did not take seriously the warning signs? Regardless – it makes for a really compelling read! As she rises to fame, we see a dark side of Dax. Where will it all end?
I really was kept on the edge of my seat (so to speak) throughout the story. Ms. Lavelle did not disappoint. So glad I already have book 2 in the series, Black Vows, ready to go on my eReader ☺. I really have to see where this goes.

Dark reality...
Let me start with the obvious, there is nothing romantic in the first part of this series.
At the beginning I thought, yes it's a nice and well written story with nice development, but the events in this book changed from nice and relaxing to oh my God nasty, abusive and hurtful within few chapters.
A girl from a small town dreams about a career in Hollywood.
The opportunity strikes and she finds herself in a film production with her biggest crush actor in the main role.
He likes her and helps her with her career and 2 years later they are engaged.
So far so good, would you say?
It would be much better if she had noticed beforehand that her fiancee is a psychopath.
But love makes blind to a lot of things, right? 🤷🏻♀️
Now she has to figure out how to escape the monster....
This book is really dark and disturbing. It's definitely not for everyone. I don't know why I'm reading a dark story again.

Once again this author delivers another captivating read! Dori blew my mind with this book!! She is definitely one of my one clicks. This is a must read.

Emma is a dumb girl who wants to get out of her small town. When the celebrity, Dax comes to her small town, he lures her into Hollywood. Their he gives her break in movies. But as she starts getting successful he starts interfering in her career. He begins to physically harm her and control her.
This is not a romance because Dax is a psycho. The book ends in cliffy so I don’t know what’s the deal with Dax. As far as this book he is an abusive guy.
Not addictive but good for a onetime read. I will surely read the next book just out of curiosity.

What a refreshing read. That's kind of weird to say, but it is different from what I have been constantly reading for years. However, there are still some critiques I have to say to make this an actual review.
So the story is about a small town girl in her mid-twenties, with a reputation for being unreliable and not holding a job for more than a month, wanting to get out of that small town. She finds a way out when a crew shoots a movie nearby and needs extras. She makes friends with the most famous guy who is a writer turned movie star and he convinces her to go to Hollywood, but it's not all that it seems.
Sounds great and for the first few chapters, I had no problem with the writing. It pulled me in, but I was disappointed that there were time jumps. There were two. The first three chapters start in the present day where you get an idea of her life and background and in chapter four, it jumps to eleven months where she is now in Hollywood trying to make it. Then in chapter seven, it jumps to two years after she and the famous guy, Dax, hook up.
I guess I can understand those time jumps to get to the point faster But I was enjoying the little slow place that it kind of threw me off. But it didn't hurt the story.
After chapter seven, the story is about her relationship with Dax and her growing acting career. I think the summary is predictable that it is a domestic abuse story. I honestly had hoped it would have been shown early on. But until the real physical abuse starts, there are strong hints of what is about to happen.
The other little time jumps occur after each chapter about a fight or talk they have and jump a few days ahead. For a book that is just eighteen chapters, you can expand somewhere to make it longer.
It was a nice read. I haven't read a domestic abuse story since Veiled Obsession which I just realized is from the same author. This one is very nicely done. Way better than the other book. I'm certainly going to be sticking around for book two.

When Emma Stanton realizes that her opportunity to escape the small town of Mainsport, Maine, she takes the chance and runs with it. It just so happened that she was pushed and endorsed by her ultimate crush, novelist and actor, Dax Pierce.
After a year of barely surviving in Hollywood, a supporting actress role with none other than Dax changes Emma's life forever.
This is the first dark romance I've read by Dori but I am enthralled and can't wait for the next part of this story. Dori does an excellent job trapping us inside Emma's life. I love how Dori also links some of her works within the novel. It makes me want to check them out and see what they are about.
As you may have gleaned, this story ends in a cliffhanger. I'm waiting in suspense for the next one.

I was given an advanced readers copy of this book and have decided to leave a voluntary review. I just Dori's books and mind. She writes some of the best dark books ever. Black kiss is have to say was tame compared to her other books, but then again this only book one and I know Dori the next will be darker. Not that I didn't enjoy this book I did I devoured it. Can't wait for book two!!

I have no idea what the heck I just but, I flove it. It started out all unassuming and then BAM you get throat punched! I was totally thrown for a loop. I first fell in love with Dori's writing from the Amour Toxique series. This book was dark, thrilling, twisted, unsuspecting, deliciousness and page turning good rolled into one. There is a cliffhanger and I can't wait until the next book.

Okay...I didn’t care for this book. It’s not the dark nature of the storyline, or the craziness of the characters—it’s the fact that this not a standalone read...there’s no resolution and certainly no happy ending. I would have appreciated knowing this book was a to be continued—who knows for how many books. I feel shortchanged. 🙁 (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and was not happy with it. Sorry...)

Mistport, MA. Baroque Hotel & Spa. Heidi (mgr.) Christa Stanton (27, Emma’s sister, kitchen, breast cancer remission), was warming Emma Stanton (26, housekeeping) about the rules of swimming in the pool & if Heidi (mgr.) knew she would be looking for a new job.
Emma was called to Heidi’s office. The Neon Production Co. will be filming in town & she would be the receptionist for the day.
Mr. Sparks (Dax’s mgr.), & Dax Pierce (40+, Ragged Waves) had arrived.
Hollywood, CA. Dax Pierce promised Emma a future but that didn’t happen.
She was now a waitress at the Olive Grove restaurant.
Dax (actor/asst. producer) had sent Hector Mcneal (driver) to pick Emma up for dinner.
LaClaire Restaurant. She would be appearing in the next movie Velvet Flame as his lover.
John Harrington would be calling.
Damien Harris (asst. producer) greeted her on the set. Amy Berkeley is 1 of the starring roles.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. Wow. a very well written sadistic romantic mystery book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great sadistic romance mystery movie, or better yet a mini TV series. Not for the faint of heart! To be continued. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Once gain Ms. Lavelle out done herself with Black Kiss!
What an outstanding captivating read!
This book encompasses everything from love and romance to despair and darkness,small town girl and hot shot actor,pure perfection!
Emma is a twenty six year old young lady with dreams to leave her small town and make something big of herself.
She’s impulsive and her decisions are made quickly without a lot of thought and detail to her choices.
But she’s also strong,determined and as a will and spirit that no one can destroy,even at her lowest.
Dax is an older handsome sexy man. He’s a writer turned actor and is very well known.
He’s charming and charismatic outwardly but there’s a darkness that covers his soul and mind.
Once again this very talented author rocks the dark suspenseful side of romance.
She’s one of the best authors of this genre.
The writing is superb!
It’s pulling and intense and had me consumed.
The storyline and plot are fan-freaking-tastic!
It’s original and unique and so pulling. I could not stop reading until I had devoured the whole book.
The world could have come to a standstill but I was not going to put my kindle down for any reason.
I can’t wait for book 2,so excited to see what happens next because this one ends with a jaw dropping heart pounding to be continued ending!

This is a hard read because as the story progresses, it deals with a very difficult theme. I caution those who have certain triggers to read this with care. Emma is a young woman in her mid-twenties who lives with her sister. She has dreams to leave her small town to make something of herself and get away from the small-minded people who only see her as a woman incapable of holding down a job and making poor decisions. She knows her value and is determined to get out. Upon the arrival of a movie company and a major celebrity coming to town, Emma starts to get her hopes up as she sees an advertisement for extras. When Dax, the male lead of the film, personally invites her to audition as an extra, she quits her job to do it. However, there is more to Dax than just his outward appearance. What is lurking underneath the sexy, older man persona is a pervasive darkness that permeates his very soul. This is the first book I have read by the author and it is compelling. Ms. Lavelle weaves a gripping tale combining suspense and drama to wield one very dark romance that begs the reader to be careful what he/she wishes for.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I thought it was really good. I will definitely be going back and reading other books she's written. There are two warnings potential readers should know. The first is that the storyline turns really dark and could definitely be a trigger for anyone with a history of abusive relationships. The second is that this ends in a major cliffhanger.
Overall, I would give this 4.5 stars. It was a little slow to start. However, once it got going, I was pulled in. There is a two year chunk of time that is skipped over in the middle of the story. I really wish we were given some idea of what happened in the behind the scenes of Emma and Dax's relationship. Even if it would have been a quick inner monologue by Emma, that would have been better. A star above.
This to me was a very exciting, romantic, not wanting to put down book. There were a few things that I did not like about this book. SPOILER ALERT... I love my psychological thrillers, but I am not a big one on domestic violence. Yet the book had to go somewhere and so I can totally understand it happening.
For some reason my book kept shutting down (audible) about every chapter or so. Yet I did not want to stop listening so I kept restarting. The last part that I was not to happy about was that it (ANOTHER SPOILER ALERT) continues on to part 2, Obsession. That in itself was not a problem because I am able to get it, if I had to wait for months for it to come out, I do not care for that.
Next, the characters were good! The story for the most part was very good, and the narrator was pretty good. I gave it a 4 stars because I liked the story enough to listen to a new author for me in two days! Now I cannot wait to purchase Ptolemy.2. Obsession.
I would recommend this book yet would warn of the sexual , the swearing and the abuse as all can be disturbing.

OMFG I need book 2 ASAP.
I love Dori's books I have been waiting patiently for Black Kiss... I read this book in one sitting, I didn't want it to end.
Oh, it is worth the wait. Dori never disappoints, I always go into one of Dori’s books blind, and I do not want to know anything about it and I love the surprises I get when I do... the story will keep you turning the pages. What a great start to this new series.

I loved this book and again a new author to me, first book by her but definitely not my last my friends have been going on about this author and I have had this book sitting waiting to be read. My only comment is why the hell did I wait so long to read it! In addition, Dori is now on my one to watch list, You need to go into this book blind, and you do not want to know anything about it you will love the surprises If you do… The Story will keep you turning the pages.

WOW, just WOW. Dori Lavelle does it again. She brings to life another dark, delicious romance for us to devour. Devour I did and I enjoyed every heart racing moment of it. This is the first book in this new series and it did not disappoint. There is truly something off about Dax, he's controlling and has a very dark side to him. Emma is just starting to realize her dream of becoming a great well-known actress. Her agent, Curtis is not too thrilled with her relationship with Dax. Curtis can't quite put his finger on it but he knows something is off with Dax. Will Dax be happy with sharing Emma with the rest of the world as she becomes a bigger name in Hollywood? Or will Dax try to ruin it for her and keep Emma all to himself? Grab this book today. This story does end in a cliffhanger. I highly recommend this book as a must read and I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.

Omfg I cannot believe it Dori has done it again. Another dark thriller can’t wait for book two.
Dax is one horrible monster I hope Emma finds a way to break free.
Emma is so sweet and innocent to be subject to his demands I hope she finds a way to escape them. I love this book as it has a few things sentimental to not only me but Dori as well.
All Emma wants to do is to be an amazing actress but it all comes crashing down with a very demanding Dax Pierce not only is he a writer he also acts. He is a control freak and all he wants is to make Emma his prisoner. He cuts her off from everything on the outside world even her dying sister who needs her the most. At the start of their relationship it was so loving and attentive then we began to see a very dark and violent side to Dax and their relationship. Emma tried to escape so many times but failed. Dax has a pet snake called Ruby witch he knows Emma is scared of but he does a lot of threatening things with the snake in order for Emma to obey him.
I’m hoping in book two that she finds a way to release herself from this horrible man and find someone who will treat her better.

There is Emma, a twenty-six year old who is from a small town and dreams of getting away. She meets Dax, an author turned actor who encourages her to audition for an extra role in the film he is doing in her small town. That is the start of a dream for her and she moves to Hollywood. With time and Dax's help she is able to realize her dream of being an actress. What starts out as everything she wants, turns into a nightmare when Dax shows his true colors. Will she be able to survive her hell? What will happen to her? This is a great start to this romantic thriller. Good character development and a story that keeps you reading. This is a graphic story and not for the faint of heart.

Whoa. Small town girl meets her Hollywood Hunk and makes her dreams come true. Sounds like a great, juicy romance. And it is. Until it isn’t.
Emma’s character, with dreams bigger than her tiny town can handle, is easily relatable. She’s pretty much an open book and naïve to big city ways, but she’s stronger than she may seem at first. She knows what she wants, and she thinks her Hollywood heartthrob, Dax, can help her get there. Dax is older than Emma, and he’s Hollywood gold. He’s sexy, talented, drop-dead handsome, and savvy. Apparently he’s also a very patient man who plays an excellent long game. Both Emma and Dax know what they want, and at first blush it seems to be virtually the same. But Emma is not aware that there will be a heavy price exacted for her dream, turning it from dream of a lifetime into total nightmare.
This novella moves quickly, with well-defined characters and a plot that sucks you in like quicksand. Since this is the first story in the series, the reader is left with a bit of a cliffhanger. As far as the heat level goes, this is one you could share with your best friend: it’s got a lot of steam in the romantic scenes, and a definite trigger factor going on with abuse and captive elements. Mind games are definitely going on in this story, so reader beware if this can be a trigger for you. This is a well-written story, and I look forward to the continuation of Dax and Emma’s tale in the next Obsession, Inc. novella.

She dropped out of school 2 years shy of graduation and she rarely holds a job longer than a month. When she meets her Hollywood crush while at her hotel job, she impulsively decides to audition for the role of an extra in his film, after being encouraged by him to do so. She didn't realize that meeting him would change her life, and not for the better, because he's a sick fuck who turns her life into a walking nightmare.
I can't wait for the next installment to see if/how she manages to get away from Dax.

I’ve read His agenda series from this author and Damn that book was 🤯🤯.Author has done her homework on psychopaths. Let’s talk about the first book in the series . I don’t know whether to love this book or hate . I hated Dax so much that I wanted to kill him . Poor Emma had to suffer his madness. He locks her,beats her,raped her and destroyed her career. He’s so crazy that he lives with a snake 🐍 .One time what he did ,just to punish the heroine ,he left her in a room with his pet Ruby 🐍🤣. Godddd his character is too much 😑.
I don’t need read large age gap novels,but I wanted to read this from a long time . And I was not disappointed. Going to read the next book in the series ☝️.
