When Sergeant Jay Lucas is snatched away from his family farm by a diabolical sentient spaceship, he thought his life was over. But when his AI captor pumps Jay full of an insanely powerful liquid metal armor, he soon discovers the kidnapping was only the beginning of his trials.
As the bloodthirsty AI trains Jay to harvest souls and increase the duo’s power, Jay learns there is a whole universe of bad guys who need killing. And when Jay’s unwavering moral compass puts him at odds with the plans of an alien mercenary company, he’s soon on the run with a gorgeous space princess.
Urged to harvest souls by his AI partner, Jay must learn to put his awesome powers to work for the good guys. The universe just got a whole lot more dangerous, and a hell of a lot more fun.
Michael-Scott Earle is a good writer who makes cool, interesting, worlds full of tight action where stuff explodes. He is and I mean this with all respect and praise, being a big fan of Bay's work myself, the Michael Bay of writing. He deserves all the money, and at least ten Oscars for coolness at the very least.
Earle is a prolific artist who knows exactly who to put things together to get your engines going. His works are fantastic and almost certainly should make their way into cinema one day. My only complaint....my ONLY criticism...is that with a few exceptions...all of his main protagonists are kind of stupid...or rather than stupid there's this cloying white hat/white knight/ chaotic goodness that sometimes works when Earle posits them right and sometimes doesn't. The tiger-guy in Earles other series works because as much as you'll eventually get sick of hearing people go on and on about how "honorable" he is and how he's a "man of honor" or whatever...he is at his core a good guy who made a single bad choice for good reasons and the whole point of the series is that he's trying to make up for the bad he's done and pay forward the good that's been done for him. His decisions make sense because the side characters and the author give us enough context for us to be able to get on board with them. In Deathship however, somehow that good guy template fails and comes across as just kind of stupid and kind of clinch in a bad way. He decides to do what seems to be the seemingly right thing to do even though ultimately it comes across as stupid...and does it for the stupidest reasons,..like say deciding the pretty terrorist/political dissident you captured is the heroine and the entire society you happen to be in is evil because....she's pretty and well spoken and your shady mercenary co-workers are kind of jerks. It was barely tolerable because Earle telegraphed it and I knew what was going to happen from the synopsis but dang...It came off as slightly too saccharine and apropos. I could have understood if there's been some background reason or personal reason for the MC making the decision that he did, I'd have understood if there's been some build up of the empire to prove to me the reader, before the mc made his decision that his actions made sense, but it was literally, a mercenary doing what he was paid and ordered to do...hearing five minutes of sob story and then deciding "you know what...she's probably the good guy"...that's stupid and to make matters worse the background Earle gave our protagonist makes the mc's choice feel sort of tone deaf. He was a member of the armed forces, fighting in the middle east. Are you telling me a that someone whose fought in an actual war wouldn't know that an enemy combatant would have some narrative in their head about why their side were right and his side was wrong? Seriously? SERIOUSLY?! No, that's so dumb that I actually had to stop reading for a bit before I could keep going. I had to wait and suspend my sense of disbelief till the very air around me turned into unicorn darts, because that was just...dumb to the point of being painful. And sure Earle, tried to toss in a throwaway line about some military blockade and how the Heresay were trying to get medicine to puppies or something along the lines but by that point I was already disengaged and ultimately national policies and politics are little too complicated for a single incident tossed in with a few sentences and no additional context to justify things. I mean for real the only thing that could possibly justify the decision at "that" point, was the fact that our MC was basically a man from mars with no stake or understanding of the fight he's in...Except that doesn't make anything better because then I imagine a literal man from mars plopping down in the middle east signing up with a security company and then deciding the sexy terrorist he's been sent to arrest might have a point after all and oh look there's my kindle out the stinking window...good thing Amazon makes these things sturdy....The point is basically for the main plot to get rolling you have to shut off your brain and leave it there for a good bit. The book gets better later though and if you don't bother thinking inorganic and forced their initial alliance was you'll have a lot of fun.
The story was pretty ok till the MC just switches sides abruptly then tells some random all of his secrets and then a relationship forms out of nowhere. I almost feel like the author believe all men are stupid and simple aswell because every main character in his books becomes retarded when they see a women that they find attractive regardless if the women trys to kill them or not
Here's the deal, I read Michael-Scott Earle's Star Justice Series a loved it. Earle has a wonderful way with words. However, I only got 2% into this book stopped reading and promptly gave it one star for one single reason. The MC insults 3 men by saying (word for word )“Don’t worry. After I beat the shit out of you, I'll call your husbands to come down and collect your sorry asses.” By using being gay as a insult the MC now comes across as a homophobic douche. After reading that little gem I instantly disliked for him; he is supposed to be the good guy and now in two sentences you've ruined him. This seems to be a bit of a issue with Earle. I just finished Lion's Quest: Undefeated and that book had a couple of characters (supposedly good people) make some offensive comments about the MC and a misunderstanding about him being gay. Because of this I'm not going to look into any other of Earle's series, which is sad because he really is a great writer.
Why does every tv show, movie, or book of the type with guns always turn into hand to hand combat? Stand back and shoot the dude with the knives till he's a pile of goo. I liked the idea of using soul power to upgrade the ship and the armor, however the personality of the ship is grating. The lead female goes from hate to he's so intriguing awful quick and for no good reason. The sister was more understandable, however this will turn into another silly herem series, where females throw themselves at the hero for no good reason. I won't be reading book two, but will recommend this as an okay read.
This is my second MSE series I've listened to. There's really nothing new about this series. It's really just a bunch of old concepts and some cliches. But there's nothing wrong with that, at least not in this case. It's basically a character that got abducted by a homicidal artificial intelligence to a very far away place and he's trying to get home. The good part is that it's humorous. So, as long as MSE can keep up the comedic aspect, then it'll be an awesome series. The problem is, just like a joke can get old, a homicidal AI can also get old. Well, that's for book 2 to decide. The other gimmick is the game elements that MSE weaved into this series. The spaceship is upgradeable. And the protagonist himself is made upgradeable. I think MSE can use a balancing patch but it works well enough I guess. There's also the fact that MSE's books are oriented around a horny protagonist. I'm cool with that though. It doesn't bother me much. And at times, it's also another type of comedic relief.
I have followed this author since discovering his Destroyer series a little over a year ago. So far this is my third-favorite series that MSE writes behind the Destroyer and Star Justice series and before the Tamer series.
This is one of the best first book of a series that I have read in a while. A little slow of a start, but then the book jumps right to the action. Several homages to Star Wars, just a shame the hot twins did not call the hero Obi Jay Kenobi and let him know he was their only hope with a little white robot. There is great combat action in this book with minimal boring stuff between. No graphic sex in this first book, unlike some of the author’s other works.
I like the twist with the hot twins, any guy who has dated a woman with a sister (twin or not) knows his butt is toast if he looks at her sister. Jay thought he was in trouble as there are very few men out there who have not dreamed of being with a pair of hot twins.
The powered armor suit with the leg spikes reminded me of the Glitter Boy powered armor from Rifts. Unusual and creative uses of a power suit in this book. The author shows great creativity in creating unusual situations for his hero. The prison assault is especially enjoyable, one of the best that I have read.
I didn’t care for the several repetitions of the whole character upgrade menu. Reading the same menu again and again was annoying. I dislike most LitRPG material, and I can usually skip through it fairly fast, but having to wade through the same menu several times irritated me. Made me think that Jay was too damned stupid to remember what was on the menu and what he wanted to upgrade with the souls.
Unless the author had a particular reason for listing that damn menu several times that I am unaware of, that is the only real complaint I have about this book.
An interesting story that starts out strong and despite some wobbling in the middle, manages to end on a pretty high note.
The main character Jay, is a likeable protagonist who seems to believe he's a white knight while engaging in the occasional bloodbath. The sentient ship is an aggressive jerk who I wished could get punished on occasion, but by the end of the story, had really grown on me.
The concept of the currency in this story is quite interesting and actually bothers to explain itself quite well. I even found myself occasionally wishing that they could visit that one planet near the beginning to grind for currency.
Aside from the flip flopping characters I only had two real complaints about the story. The first would be that the main character feels a bit too rude by times, being less accepting of other people. Probably the best example of this would be the gay joke he makes at the expense of his childhood bullies near the beginning. The other problem I had was the sort of space Lothario side of the main character. Sure this is far less than other similar stories in the genre but it really made me cringe at one point near the end.
All in all, this was an enjoyable story and I will probably continue it in the future!
I f'n love this book. The MC is alright. That AI tho. I'd have his kids. I swear to god I would. I loved the AI, it was like having that one friend of yours that has nothing but bad ideas, but every once in a while, you give in and do something stupid with them that ends up with you telling your other friends...."see what had happened was......." Yeah, it's kinda like that. But the only difference is that you ALSO (MC) doesn't have a well of inspiration to pull from so your (MC) great ideas are only marginally better than your friends "Bad ideas". The witter banter between the MC and the AI is what really keeps the book afloat. If you've ever played Portal you know what I'm talking about. I am thoroughly endorsing this book for anyone who's into space opera. Be thee warned...There is a LOT of cursing, gratuitous amount of death, and off the wall shenanigans throughout this book.....IF you're looking for what I gen read that has massive sex romps in it. Pass this up. But if you want someone who specializes in doing dentistry with a sledge hammer....step right up.
What's with all these weak little main chars? You get kidnapped by a murder-hobo, tortured for a while, it attempts to implant a torture-toy in your chest (only to have that prevented by a bloody BIBLE of all the daft horrid things) then goes on to kidnap you to the arse-end of who gives a fuck where it tells you to "work monkey, work!" for its entertainment and profit.
Said murder-hobo is then set upon by space-insects (those were delightful, I'd happily read about more of them getting squished), who starts to cut it apart. Whyyy is the reaction to SAVE the torturous, kidnapping, wannabe slaving murder-hobo? You ain't getting back boy, stop fronting, just let the thing die, pref screaming.
Then, as though this weak, mewling reaction to kidnapping and torture isn't enough, at the end of the book the MC even goes all misty-eyed. Because you know, let's just forget the kidnapping. And the torturing. And the enslaving. (You're still a slave Jay, you just can't feel your chains.)
Would have liked it better if it was shorter. I found myself skiping much of it. Over half way through though Seamore, the AI death ship that harvests souls for power and Our MC is the Kidnapped harvester, really start to click. Seamore being a AI ship comments on everything MC does, and instead of the usual sarcastic comments we get a super aggressive AI obsessed with murder. This leads to it getting upset that MC is not killing people and instead thinking with his hormones, not an exact quote but it mostly goes like this "Why are you not killing, why do you focus on breeding with this creature". As for the MC himself, I don't care much for him. The whole southern boy thing has been done before. If you can get this on kindle unlimited go for it.
How to you handle being kidnapped and turned into a soul gathering killing machine by a mad AI ship full of advanced tech and an insane thirst for souls. You go on a galaxy wide killing spree whilst upgrading your abilities every chance you get. Throw in a cause and hot women and you have a fast paced action series with plenty of violence and crazy missions throwing death at you from every direction. Some great action scenes and an interesting dynamic between a marine with a conscience and a mad AI gives MSE full reign with his talents and a bucket full of can't put a book down reading for the reader.
It seems that a "balls to the wall, action extravaganza" just isn't my cup of tea anymore. I need character (personality and development) and a clear purpose, either through the exploration of concepts or story. This book has neither. What it does have is violence seen in many first-person shooters and sexual fantasy (didn't get to this bit in the book, so I'm hypothesising here) found in the minds of most teenagers. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in then by all means go ahead. Sadly, I strive for something entirely different in my novels.
This is the first Michael-Scott Earle book I have read and I am now very excited to read all his other work now. This book starts out a little different than I thought it would from reading the back of the book . It soon takes off with a vengeance and succeeds in providing an action packed adventure that is different than all the other alien abduction/scifi books out there. It is well worth the time to read or also the audiobook is great too. My only criticism is the ships AI is a pretty one track mind but the character gets more depth in the later books.
This book is fast paced and action packed. I would characterize it as a sci-fi action adventure novel, with some light litrpg elements. I wouldn't call it a lit rpg, but the leveled system with different branches to upgrade the suit and ship certainly remind me of an rpg, while still being incredibly original. If you enjoy sci-fi, litrpg, action, AI, or hot alien princesses, this is a book for you.
Holy smokes this book is incredible! I’ve read almost every book this author has put out and let me tell you he is an absolute machine! How is it possible that one person has so many amazing stories stored in their heads. Jay and Seymour are an absolute riot, one of the best duos I have read about in a very long time! Non stop action and very well thought out characters that actually have depth take this novel to the next level!
Hopefully in the next book you'll expand the upgrade options. There were some but you have almost no limit you could reach with armor that can shift into almost any shape for any tool. We need some pop up shoulder torrents haha. Also more options to increase soul value. Not to make him insanely powerful but because more upgrades more often are always interesting to the reader. Looking forward to what direction you go.
I wanted to give this a five, but something was throwing me off like something was missing. That being said though, I love the action, and the SciFi. It is very entertaining and there is something to say about a homicidal, egotistical, lying ship....lol... I think what I would like us more main characters... Any ways, I am looking forward to more really enjoy reading this Author's books.
Same old tech used in the same old ways. Not much original going on with this book. Characters seem one dimensional and the Mc is the type that makes you vote for him to die. Slight spoiler from chapter 3 ....the a.i. tries to implant a pain control in him. And he ignores it. the a.i. and him are buddy buddy. Big nope on any other books in this series from me. If I can’t suspend belief then the book isn’t worth reading.
Reluctant hero meets phyco AI ship, struggles between good and evil while fighting in a universe totally alien to him. Read it in one sit down. even through the night with broken glasses slipping off my nose absolutely could not put it down.
Great author but not his best work. The story is good but the protagonist may as well jumped out a window aiming to hit his head with his decision making. Groan! Talk about thinking with the wrong head. Why did I rate it so high? Because of the premise with the space ship. It's as scary as all get out. I want more of that story.
I struggled to get into this book as I am also reading his space opera series. This has a very similar feel hero/super ability/sexy women and bad guys galore! However after getting last the first couple of chapters there was enough difference to make it an enjoyable read.
I enjoyed the book, but thought that some of the storyline was a bit Cheesy I guess. I don't want to give anything away with saying anything else. But I will say that Mike hasn't let me down so far with Great writing. Check out Star Justice series, it Rocks. I'm going to read the second book in this Series before I say more.
It was OK. Started out strong but got a bit long winded by the end - the action was almost a bit repetitive.
I think this book could have cut out about 30 - 40% and it would have been a lot better.
The dialogue/interaction between the ship and the main character were often funny and actually had me laughing out loud. Other times it was just silly and repetitive.
Some of us who read MSE’s books are convinced he has sold his soul to the devil. Only way to explain a variety of great series across many story lines. Loved this one!
Michael Scott Earle did it again this story was great. Let start with the pros. Great dialogue lots of action sexy alien women!! Cons i didn't have any i like this book but I tend to like all of mse books. Must buy!!!
As usual I'm engaged from the first; and am eagerly awaiting the next installment of this space saga. Great characters and an already well defined plot are the hallmarks of this author.
Well this book is more space opera than the one with Adam and Eve. It has more aliens in it, an annoying A.I. and space babes. The death count is kinda important in it. I like it! You should grab it, this is not for the faint of heart.
This I think is one of his best works. There a lot of everything in it. It got a hero in armor, a damsel in distress, and a crazy dynamic between character. I laughed a lot and was truly entertained.
I am a fan of Michael's other series and have read them all up to date. This has a few surprises and a great developing storyline. I am looking forward to the next
It is a great beginning to a new story about a really tough man in a really destructive armour and an homicidal ship. Great characters, awesome action, great story. Incredible book!
