Each book in this fun new 12-book series from Bear Grylls follows a different child on the outdoor activity camp. Once they are given the magical compass, they meet the inspirational adventurer in an amazing place and learn new skills and facts they can take with them back to their real life.
Bear Grylls has become known around the world as one of the most recognized faces of survival and outdoor adventure. His journey to this acclaim started in the UK on the Isle of Wight, where his late father taught him to climb and sail. Trained from a young age in martial arts, Bear went on to spend three years as a soldier in the British Special Forces, serving with 21 SAS. It was here that he perfected many of the skills that his fans all over the world enjoy watching him pit against mother-nature. Despite a free-fall parachuting accident in Africa, where he broke his back in three places, and after enduring months in military rehabilitation, Bear went on to become one of the youngest ever climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Bear went on to star in Discovery Channel's Emmy nominated Man Vs Wild and Born Survivor TV series, which has become one of the most watched shows on the planet. Off screen, Bear has lead record-breaking expeditions, from Antarctica to the Arctic, which in turn have raised over £2.5million for children around the world. In recognition of his expertise and service, Bear was appointed as the youngest ever Chief Scout to 28 million Scouts worldwide, awarded an honorary commission as a Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Navy, and has authored 10 books, including To My Sons.
The story begins with Evie and her friend Harry playing capture the flag. Evie gives her position away because her stomach was rumbling. One day, she is given a compass and is suddenly on Safari, staring at an elephant. The elephant charged at Evie but luckily and man called Bear Grylls saved her and became her guide.
With the help of Bear, Evie travels round the Savannah first through lion country, where Bear treats a wound on Evie’s elbow, by cutting a leaf from an aloe tree and healing the wound.
It was an interesting read about no matter how hard the challenge seems, people can overcome it. Evie then when back at training camp, embraced the challenges and learnt to appreciate things more.
I ordered this series for some of my emerging boy readers who aren't into fantasy early chapter books like Dragon Masters or Notebook of Doom. It is delightful! A fast-moving adventure that also teaches lots of outdoor survival info and skills. The one problem that will likely prevent my specific intended audience from diving in is that there are many British words that may not be familiar with- not just metres and litres, but "manky" and "trainers" and "queues." I'm glad to have read this so I inform readers going into the book that there may be unfamiliar words because it's not an American author...and hopefully instill some confidence that they have the skills to figure out the meanings and that it's worth the effort!
The Safari Challenge by Bear Grylls is a fun and exciting book. It’s about a girl named Evie who is taken to the African savannah by a magic compass. She meets Bear Grylls and learns how to survive in the wild. She faces big challenges like wild animals and finding water in strange places. Evie learns to be brave and try new things. The book is full of cool facts about nature and survival. It’s great for people like me who like adventure and learning new skills. A fast and fun read for anyone who loves the outdoors!
This one is great because the main character is a picky eater, which she must overcome to survive the Safari challenge! This book also contained fun facts that my daughter loves to reference.
We LOVE the Bear Grylls books! A lot like Magic Tree House they are fun fiction combined with nonfiction information. In the Bear Grylls adventures the children have not only a personal challenge to overcome but also an environmental one, learning survival skills along the way!
I am impressed by Bears writing (I guess that comes from the many books he has written) - it is imaginative and creative. I like the combination of his imagination with his passion for adventure. I like the voices and acting of the actor in the audio book I listened to and chuckled the first few times at the realism of the impression of Bear speaking.
Bear helps a girl survive (and eat some interesting things) on an African savanna...I particularly liked reading this one with my son, who is quite the picky eater lately. ;)
A middle grade series of books about kids learning to work through their personal fears using outdoor solutions. My kiddos got me addicted to these books last month and I wish there were more! Lots of great info in each book not just about basic survival, but about being in the world.
