Tanaka Ogeretsu (おげれつたなか) is a Japanese manga artist. She uses this name for her Boys Love manga production. She also publishes non-BL manga under the name Marumero Tanaka
Boy, am I glad I read this tonight. This hit all my spots and made me fall in love with BL and Ogeretsu Tanaka all over again. It was fun and sweet and sexy and had some good serious parts as well. I know I am repeating myself here, but she is one of the best BL mangaka at the moment.
(Some spoilers below)
A previously straight man falls in love with a gay man but - spoiler alert - actually can't get over the fact that the other guy has guy bits too. I really loved that, and while he got over that a tiny bit too easily maybe I honestly didn't care.
Possibly TMI - I really enjoyed some of the more detailed sexy bits here.
I really like the drawing style of Tanaka Ogeretsu and often enjoy her stories populated by sweet and quirky characters.
The MCs of Neon Sign Amber are no exception. Ogata, a former bartender with a constantly inscrutable expression, and Saya, a beautiful boy who spends his life between drinks and nights out, get to know each other because of a small debt that Saya has towards Ogata.
Their friendship starts slowly and turns into something that will shake Ogata's worldview and Saya's fears.
Under the veneer of an apparently lighthearted and superficial story, Ogeretsu portrays two characters that are much more complex than their immediate appearance.
Ogata suffers from his inability to express himself with other people and when Saya starts to read his emotions with ease, he reacts with confusion and by feeling dangerously exposed. Saya, however, knows how to read people between the lines. Living his homosexuality in the closet - and with a traumatic past of bullying and homophobic persecution - he is attuned to small details and gestures, even though he's afraid to act upon them.
It's exactly this focus on small changes and admissions that I enjoyed the most in Neon Sign Amber.
I planned Your Lie in April to be my April 1st read but I got distracted!! I wouldn't say this is spectacular. I really think that the ending felt too rushed. Nevertheless, it's an okay read. Although, I always think that fiction that ends in smut after angst is rushed. So, never mind that. It's really okay, just pretty basic to me I guess.
I love Tanaka Ogeretsu's stories. The emotions they manage to illustrate with the artwork feel so real and honest. The story itself is very refreshing because it touches on difficult topics with the earnestness they deserve and also offers a nice balance by including things that leave you with a good feeling.
Tanaka Ogeretsu definitely is one of my favourite manga-ka.
I liked that the whole volume told only the one story of this one couple. There were some really cute moments, but over all, the story doesn't stand out.
When I first starting reading this manga, I thought it was going to be the typical expressionless guy falls for the boisterous, outgoing guy. While that does happen, there's a much deeper, emotionally-charged story lying underneath. Saya's backstory and his feelings of self worth are heartbreaking and made me not only want to learn more about him, but also like him more. Yuusuke is cool and aloof, but he has a soft side and a deep capacity to love. Highly recommended!
ogeretsu tanaka has a problem with a relationship starting well and being healthy from the beginning. her characters and relations have to be complex and heavily flawed, interestingly enough.
A perfect blend of cuteness, touching story, good characters, smutty scenes and beautiful art.
Cuteness because I love that Saya and Yuusuke are friends first, and that they aren't promiscuous. This is a g4u, as most yaoi are, but this one at least, while Yuusuke, being straight, starts to see Saya as "cute" and gives the first step, is paralyzed the first time he sees Saya naked. No wonder, although he always knew Saya was a guy, he never thought about men bits. It was very heartbreaking how he appologizes while poor Saya gets his heart broken. It was going to be his first time, and to have your first posible lover to run away after seeing you naked.... Of course it is impossible to think Yuusuke is a dick since he feels very remorseful afterwards.
Touching because Saya's past, while being cliche (first guy he liked rejected him, and then bullied him) was sad and I feel for him, his tears and his disgust at being a guy who likes guys... I love how quickly Yuusuke defends him when the bully shows up, how he confronts him. Very lovely.
Good characters since Saya was a nice guy who was also the only one who could read Yuusuke's aloofness. And thank God Yuusuke was never a jerk with Saya, and I love how quickly Yuusuke makes Saya realize he doesn't feel disgust over Saya being a guy.
The smutty scene was so well drawn, their bodies... **drooling** Beautiful <3
AMAZING. Oh my god this was so good?? Tanaka Ogeretsu has the motherfucking RANGE.
I just really loved the way the characters slowly fell for each other and the conflict hurt so good. The way their emotions, insecurities, and doubts were portrayed just felt very realistic. Yuusuke's hesitation fucking HURT, but it made sense, which I guess made it hurt more? And poor Saya. Ugh they're just both such sweet babies and I loved them together. This also had a food aspect and there's the fact that Yuusuke has trouble expressing emotions but Saya can tell what he's feeling and I'm really going to cry thinking about it. So good. Was not expecting to love this as much as I did. Wow.
This is a really well written Manga. From the very beginning it kept me hooked into the story line using realistic and simple emotions. I really enjoyed the whole Manga and couldn't stop reading once started.
Ogeretsu-sensei writes twisted love stories like few other mangaka do. This one is one of my favorites, and it's full of beautiful art, heartbreaking moments, steamy scenes and some nice relationship development.
A sweet story. I like expressionless characters like that ♥ The expressionless Ogata and the partyboy Saya fall in love but it isn't as easy as it should be and they have some difficulties.
First things first, the art was amazing! And the cover is delicious! The story was short and sweet, the characters were gorgrous and cute. Definitely liked it.
