Fragments Vol.1 is a collection of sketches done by Audra Auclair from 2013-2017. The mediums used within the book include pencil, ink, gouache, watercolour and digital format.
"This is a book I've been wanting to put together for a long time. I find that looking into another artist's sketchbook is so exciting. Seeing the unfinished work, the doodles and the practice behind the finished artwork is my personal favourite to look at. So I have decided to create Fragments and will continue to add to the series as time passes." -Audra
I love Audra's art and was not disappointed. The layout, the illustrations, and even simple initial doodles are all laid out perfectly, a high source for inspiration! I can't fault it.
Audra Auclair is one of my top 5 favorite contemporary artists! I LOVE HER WORK SOOO MUCH! So I had to get the new rerelease! I love the work shown! I love that she included portraits of her done by her family! I have a feeling Fragments Vol 1 is going to be my fave art book for a long while! It just makes me soooooo happy!!
I've been a fan of Audra's work for a few years now, so I was super happy to get this artbook. I did order it before her troubles with publishing became known, though, and it was very disheartening to hear of that. BUT the artbook itself is amazing, and I enjoy the way she designed her pages, overlaying different pieces to make a new and interesting composition. This artbook is definitely something you can "read" repeatedly and each time you come back to it you can spot something new. I do hope she will publish more volumes, and with more luck.
I've followed Audra Auclair for quite awhile on social media. I have a couple of her art prints as well. She is a talent to be reckoned with. When this book became available I didn't hesitate and I'm so glad. While there are some pages and sketches I wish were bigger to better capture detail, I thought it well put together and undeniably gorgeous from color to line, imagination to reference and inspiration. There's also an unfettered rich coolness to her work which can't be ignored.
Honestly I was a little disappointed. The artwork was beautiful that was not the issue. It was just how the book was formatted. I know it is a nitpick but with the margins being nearly 2 inches. It seems just like a lot of wasted space. Even more so when the page numbers are with in the margins So I just see all of this wasted white space. that seems to take me a bit out of the art. I know this is her first book and I d not regret buying it. I just really hope they do better with the formatting in the future. I know that might not sound like much for an art book. Since I did like the art for it. But it did take me out of the Emerson a bit
The first of MANY artbooks I ever bought. Because of this, it will always have special place in my heart. But besides that it's really just a great collection of artworks and sketches. I love her style in her finished pieces and it's so cool to see all the experiments, studies and little casual sketches that come before that.
Review for the second one (it doesn't have it's own goodreads entry) - feels even more scrapbooky, a part I really liked about vol 1 - unfortunately less pencil/non digital sketches, they were my favorites in vol 1 - still lots of great artwork - 4/5 stars
