Paul hardly ever -- if ever -- held back. He could be quite brutal with the truth. Yet, sometimes that's exactly what we need. What really struck me through Galatians this time around was how Paul confronted the Galatian people's stubborn belief that the law would save them, while also reminding them that it was Jesus who became the law in order to save us. Paul's words were harsh yet gentle at the same time. He also shared many encouragements with them as well, including this beauty found in Galatians 4:18 --

"But it is good to be zealous in a good thing always."

Boy, I wish more people would be "zealous in a good thing." Too much of the world are zealous for evil things. Only by the grace of God will that get turned around. As for me, I am trying to focus on God and any good thing He plants in my life.

I was not compensated for my honest review.

I love Paul's epistles. They are some of my favorite books and Galatians is right up there with the favorites. I love how easy it is to read and yet has powerful meaning and depth. A favorite verse:

For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. (Galatians 5:14-15)

Read with The Bible Recap (11/19/24-11/20/24)

"But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. There is no law against these things!" - Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

Galatians was written was written by the "Apostle Paul about 49 A.D." (according to BibleHub.com). It's is the ninth New Testament book, and the fourth Pauline epistle (letter from Paul). As this is a letter, it's not set anywhere per se, but the addressee is the Christian churches of Galatia. To give some context of where the country of Galatia would have been at the time Paul wrote the letter, "Ancient Galatia is located in the central regions of modern-day Turkey." (from ancient.eu/galatia)

Rating: 5 stars

I "read" this book by watching it on DeafBible, a great app on my phone, which has videos of some of the books of the Bible signed in ASL, verse by verse. I find it motivating to read this way!

Is it clean? Yes.

Christian elements: Obviously, the whole thing is "Christian" since it's part of the Bible. The fruit of the spirit is a concept that really struck me as a tween. My Sunday school teacher had us each draw a bowl of fruit and label each piece of fruit one of the fruits of the spirit as a visual for ourselves at home. (She had us label a banana with "longsuffering" -otherwise known as patience- which I thought was clever.) I enjoyed that activity, my very non-artistic self notwithstanding, and it's impressive that I still remember it 25-ish years later. From the Bible as a whole, I like the Pauline epistles - as well as Proverbs - most because I appreciate the overt lessons on godly living.

Important points: "Paul writes this book to deal with the problem of circumcision and Jewish legalism toward Gentile believers" (Biblehub.com), with Gentile referring to non-Jews. Galatians is a very short book of the Bible - makes sense since it's a letter - so I'm going to include the highlights of the summary from Biblehub.com since it won't take up much room.

*"In chapters 1-2, Paul’s gives his testimony about how he had received the authentic Gospel message….Paul then declares that Christ now lives within him, and directs, and empowers him to live as Christ’s ambassador and instrument."
*"Chapters 3-5:12, Paul begins by declaring that salvation is through faith and trust in Jesus Christ “Alone”, and cannot be obtained through the keeping of the Law."
*"Chapters 5:13-6, He teaches the Fruits of the Spirit and tells us to “walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh” (5:16)."

***********

I'd always recommend the Bible as good reading for anyone. I'm currently reading Joshua.

Galatians may be a short book, but it’s packed with gems 💎 and wisdom.

“But from those who seemed to be something—whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God shows personal favoritism to no man—for those who seemed to be something added nothing to me.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭2‬:‭6‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭2‬:‭20‬ ‭

“For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3‬:‭26‬-‭28‬

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭1‬

“For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.””
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭14‬

“Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭19‬-‭21‬

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭22‬-‭23‬ ‭

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭6‬:‭2‬-‭3‬

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭6‬:‭7‬ ‭

I just love Galatians! Especially chapter five. Talking about freedom in Christ, Christian liberty, walking by the Spirit, love ... Awesome and thought-provoking. Oh, how amazing is the Word of my God!

This was really good! Galatians is full of doctrine but it's not quite as hard to read as say, Romans.
The new Bible study method that I started using, reading KJV, then comparing with NIV and then reading it in Russian, it's really helpful to fully swallow what Paul is saying.

Paul's main point in his letter to the Galatians is that a person is justified through faith in Christ's death, not by works of the law. If the law could justify a person, then there was no point in Jesus' sacrifice.

"9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith."
– Galatians 6:9-10

I think it's important that we also work hard to do good works. Yes, we are not saved by our works—we don't earn our salvation by acts—but just because we're saved doesn't mean we can just relax and we don't need to do good deeds.

James 2:18
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

Every time we do something good for God, we expand His kingdom.

Paul addresses his message to church comprising primarily Gentile Christians facing a crisis because false teachers are attempting to mke them follow the "works of the Law" and be circumcised. Rather than engaging in "works of the law" Christians are to follow the "law of Christ" which is the law of love.

Paul's letters do such a beautiful job of sharing the essential beliefs of Christ that we as Christians should follow.

I’m currently working on reading the Bible through and a year and today I finished Galatians. This is a fantastic read with implications that I still apply very much to our day and age now. There was division in the Church of Galatia about observing the Torah Laws. The big takeaway for this book for me is that the Church is a multi-ethnic family pursuing Jesus, pruning wicked ways and producing fruit. In a life of Living by the Spirit. Altogether a great letter!

1/29/21: The TPT's translation of the passage on the fruit of the Spirit offers a fascinating spin on the familiar words. Instead of treating them as separate fruits, all the others are treated as different "expressions" of the one fruit: love. Not only that, but each fruit gets an "action" to go along with it: "joy that overflows," "peace that subdues," "patience that endures," and so on. The footnote says this is quite deliberate, because "they are not meant to be abstract virtues, but made visible with actions."

This is exactly the sort of work a new translation should offer the reader. A faithful yet fresh and eye-opening rendering of the familiar. Well done.

5/15/20: "I say then, walk by the Spirit and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don't do what you want."
~Galatians 5:16-17

There is, perhaps, no more succinct summary in the Bible of the daily struggle of the believer who is wanting to do the right thing but constantly butting up against their own nature.

This passage in particular is one I find myself repeating often . . . along with "Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires" a few lines later (5:24).

For that alone, Galatians is one of the most pivotal of Paul's letters, at least for me!

(Yes, "crucifying the flesh" can go overboard at times, but it's undeniably a vivid metaphor for what sometimes has to happen to get rid of a moral or spiritual problem in one's life)

This is part of a series where I am reading the Bible in chronological order. I am not doing this for reasons of faith, as I am agnostic, but because of my interest in mythology, ancient literature, and history. I chose the NRSV because I used to be Catholic and still have sympathies there. More importantly, this version seeks a balance between an accurate translation and the literary qualities of the King James Bible. So it seems you get the best of two worlds.

Galatians represents, in direct and powerful language, the shift from Judaism to Christianity and in turn the influence of Platonic thought on Christianity. I can see why Paul was so effective. His mastery of language and argument is first rate.

1 Thessalonians is a much shorter letter but Paul uses the word “brother” 19x in comparison to 9x in Galatians. What is intriguing is that Paul’s usage of familial words decreased with the church in Galatia, which faced more conflicts than the church in Thessalonica. Curious to know whether Paul consciously employed less familial language because he viewed the Galatian church less as family or whether it was unconscious, which would be an interesting perspective on the subjectivity in the Bible.

Galatians is more doctrinal than ethical. You do not have to be Jewish to be a follower of Christ. Men were being circumcised to become Jewish => followers of Christ. Grace comes from Faith alone. This is an angry letter, and the only one of Paul's Epistles not to begin by thanking God for the congregation. - From "The History of the Bible: The Making of the New Testament Canon," by Bart D. Ehrman.

There are seven undisputed Pauline Epistles: Romans; 1 & 2 Corinthians; Galatians; Philippians; 1 Thessalonians; and Philemon. -- From "The History of the Bible: The Making of the New Testament Canon," by Bart D. Ehrman.

p. 2043. 1:15-16&24. But when God, who had set me apart before I was born and called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with any human being, . . . . . And they glorified God because of me.

Paul did not lack self-esteem, and this contrasts with Esau (Malachi 1:3; Romans 9:13).

From: https://www.gotquestions.org/Jacob-Es...
. . . . Rebekah's children had one and the same father, our father Isaac. Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad—in order that God's purpose in election might stand: not by works but by him who calls—she was told, ‘The older will serve the younger.’ Just as it is written: ‘Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.’”

I do not see any element of free will in this. This does not make the Christian God unjust: inequitable certainly but not unjust. Also 4:29-31

p. 2046. 3:1. . . . . It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly exhibited as crucified.

Not likely!

p. 2049. 5:12. I wish those who unsettle you would castrate themselves!

Angry indeed.

WORDS FROM THE BOOK OF GALATIANS:
Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by a man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead— and all the brothers and sisters with me, To the churches in Galatia: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!

Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

BLESS THE NAME OF JESUS!

A letter written by Paul to the church in Galicia probably written from Antioch and in it Paul tells the story of his own conversion.

Paul is different from the other apostles in that he didn’t wander around with Jesus for 3 years like the others but was converted after Jesus death. We are told that he did see Jesus during his conversion and was imparted with God’s wisdom at that time. But due to that and his previous persecution of the church, created credibility problems for him.

That’s why Peter chose to talk to him before confirming his apostleship. But his obvious devotion and zeal for the Jesus and his deep insight into Jesus’s teachings gave credence to his ministry to the uncircumsed heathen (non-Jews).

In Gal 1:19 Paul states that James is a half-brother of Jesus, obviously by Joseph.

Fave verse(s): Gal. 1: 8 ‘But though we, or any angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.’ Also Gal. 5:1 ‘Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.’

Galatians is the forty-eighth book of the Bible and the ninth book in the New Testament. This book is almost unanimously believed to be written by the Apostle Paul and has had some of the least resistance to this claim. Paul helped establish the church in Galatia during his first missionary journey and was especially close to the believers there.

Paul had a particularly angry tone when he wrote to this church. They fell into error by the Judaizers, those who wanted to enforce the Mosaic law on Christians. This letter preceded the first council where this same topic was brought up, which was one of the first major controversies of the church. Paul strongly emphasizes the unity Christians have in Christ, where there is neither Jew nor Gentile. And he felt very passionate about this point.

This book presents a strong claim from Paul about his apostleship status as well as intense pleas to remain United in Christ. Though the Judaizers had fooled the Galatians, Paul loved them enough to speak the truth and remind them of what Christ accomplished for them. I enjoyed this epistle, and I felt Paul’s passion and love for the Galatians very deeply.
