She tampers with his life. He tampers with her heart. Love tampers with them both.
Desperate to escape an arranged marriage to a womanizer, twenty-two-year-old Maggie Mullaney flees New York for Virginia City, Nevada with her Aunt Liberty, two spunky suffragists intent on bettering the life of women. Fresh out of nursing school, Maggie hopes to devote herself to serving others rather than just one man, a goal quickly affirmed when she encounters Blaze Donovan, a womanizing cowboy who both riles and rouses her pulse. But when Aunt Liberty’s parent’s house burns down, she and Maggie are coerced into staying at the ranch of Liberty’s ex-husband, Finn McShane, who just happens to be the uncle of the cocky cowboy Maggie had hoped to avoid.
If there’s one thing twenty-nine-year-old Blaze Donovan can’t abide, it’s respectable women who spout piety and prayer, so when he butts heads with perky Maggie Mullaney at St. Mary Louise Hospital, he wants to stay as far away from her as he possibly can. Unfortunately, she now lives in the bedroom next to his in his uncle’s ranch house, a revolting development that sends Blaze to The Ponderosa Saloon more than usual. But when Maggie interferes in Blaze’s life by converting his favorite “disrespectable” girl, Blaze is determined to make her pay. Only problem is—the price HE has to pay may be a little too steep for his heart.

A fun, spirited Western historical romance is in store between the covers of Julie Lessman’s latest release, Love’s Silver Lining. With possibly the most stubborn cast of characters I’ve encountered, it’s a battle of wits, egos, and hearts that’s sure to delight, entertain, and inspire.
Thanks to Singing Librarian Book Tours, I received a complimentary copy of Love’s Silver Lining and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.
“…the deepest, purest love thrives in the soil of faith.”
I said this in my review of For Love of Liberty, but I’m going to say it again here too: Julie Lessman was made for writing westerns! With a cast of spitfire females, swoony-drawl cowboys and colorful phrases like “Holy snake snot!” and “Great day in the morning!”, you might even think you hear the theme song to Bonanza or Rawhide playing in your head as you immerse yourself in Finn, Liberty, Maggie, and Blaze’s stories. You will for sure be smiling and swooning in no time!
Now, y’all know that I’m a big fan of happily ever afters, which is what I thought we had with Finn and Liberty in the prequel novella. Ahem. Julie Lessman, I’m looking at you. 😉 But, y’all – I gotta admit that the journey she took them on in Love’s Silver Lining made up for that little dismaying revelation in the book blurb. They might be seventeen years older, but one of them (at least) isn’t necessarily seventeen years wiser. Needless to say, they’ve got some ‘wrasslin to do in their own hearts – before God, first and foremost. And since I am a strong-willed firstborn who can be a little feisty when provoked, I needed those lessons that Liberty had to learn too. (Oops. I just ratted her out as the one that needed to do some more maturing, didn’t I? lol)
Which brings us to Maggie and Blaze and whew goodness just go ahead and read this whole book from the safety of your freezer. Julie Lessman’s tagline isn’t “Passion with a Purpose” for no reason. Boy howdy do her characters have themselves some PASSION and sparks and fireworks. But always always always tucked between the sizzling kisses and neck nibblin’ is a parallel to the intensity with which our Savior longs for a relationship with us, to the dedicated pursuit of us that led Him to the cross, and to the ferocity with which He calls us home. And Maggie and Blaze’s friendship set on fire is one such parallel. I so loved how Lessman redeemed Blaze’s past, though it was a little disconcerting to discover one of my best friends plays an important role – as a saloon girl LOL.
Bottom Line: Saddle up for one doozy of a ride – from the opening scenes to the last, Love’s Silver Lining is packed with colorful characters, foot-stomping feistiness, and smokin’ hot kisses! It’s also packed with a solid message of redemption from the most broken pasts and of the fierce love our Savior has for each one of us. Lessman shines in this genre (as she does each one she writes in) and I cannot wait for more adventures with the gang at the Silver Lining Ranch!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.)
If you’ve never read a Julie Lessman novel, you’re in for a treat with Love’s Silver Lining. If you’ve read her novels and love them, this newest book will only reaffirm why you love her books. Love’s Silver Lining has all of Julie Lessman’s celebrated trademarks - easy-to-read writing that flows well, fantastic banter and dialogue that are witty, emotional, and full of humor, gasp-worthy twists and turns in the plot that is well-constructed, characters that steal the reader’s heart, and a strong thread of faith, forgiveness, and redemption.
I didn’t read For Love of Liberty, the prequel novel to this series, prior to reading this book but didn’t feel that I missed anything. I do have to read it now just to get the background story behind Liberty and Finn’s relationship.
Liberty and Finn, though they’re dubbed as “secondary heroine and hero” of the story, still get close to half of the plot line. Liberty is a woman with an iron-will, intelligence, crazy volatile temper and a passion for women’s rights who doesn’t trust any man. Finn is a steady, patient, faithful and loyal man devoted to his extended family who can’t let go of his one and only love Liberty. Their relationship is fire and ice (Julie Lessman’s signature relationship!) thrown together that creates a lot of angst, fury, passion and sparks. Both Liberty and Finn need to learn forgiveness and trust to make their relationship work.
Maggie and Blaze are somewhat different as the primary heroine and hero. Maggie is the steady, tender, gentle nurse who is guided by faith and forgiveness. She does have issues with men but learns to forgive. Her faith is the driving force of who she is and what she does. Blaze, on the other hand, has been hurt by so-called religious people in his life and refuses a relationship with God but he is loving, loyal, charming, hard-working, and steadfast as the foreman of his Uncle Finn’s ranch. Theirs starts out as a friendship that evolves into a romantic relationship but Blaze needs to come to terms with his past to fully allow the relationship to blossom.
Oh, what a fun journey! Anyone who loves historical romance set in the West during the late 1880s would totally love this book. I can’t wait for the next installment in the series where we’ll (hopefully) get Blaze’s younger sister’s story as she grows up!
I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher through Singing Librarian Books Tour and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
This was a cute little western romance, if only we all had a Mrs. Poppy in our life to point out the obvious when we don't see it. She reminds me a little of my grandma in her "teachings", not a blatant here it is, but through a little story to let you see everyone has their faults, it’s working together that matters. If you like the first book, For Love of Liberty, you will love this one just as much.
This is a story of finding the silver lining in ourselves, life, and others. I was quite upset, I have to admit, when I got the blurb for this book and it said that Liberty and Finn were divorced. No, they were so cute together . . . pesky, irritating, but lots of love down below for each other. But as I read it was more of a “Sweet Home Alabama” uh-oh, she didn’t sign the papers. Yay, for Liberty and Finn, their feelings for each other are just as strong as their wills. We also find out what drives Liberty for women’s rights, but not until Finn breaks her heart yet again. Is she really for women’s rights, or women to be heard?
It also introduces Maggie and Blaze into the story. Maggie is the daughter of Liberty’s best friend, Blaze is Finn’s nephew. You thought sparks flew with Liberty and Finn, Maggie and Blaze have sparks flying in the very first pages, and they are just as entertaining as Liberty and Finn. But it is Maggie who tames this wild man, and also her Aunt Libby, to realize that you can’t control everything all the time, that you have to let God guide your path. Talk about a lot of sawdust for them to swallow.
This is truly an enjoyable read. It is a giggle out loud kind of book. I would say this has a Christian backbone, with Mrs. Poppy and Maggie’s guidance, but it does have its moments of romantic passion that may be more than some look for in a Christian read. Cannot wait for the next book in the series.
When I read the book description for Love’s Silver Lining, my first reaction (being the romantic that I am) was, “Oh no! Finn and Liberty’s marriage fell apart? But I was so happy for them at the end of For Love of Liberty!” However, I took a deep breath, and realized that this book had the potential to be even better than the prequel because there would be a “marriage reconciliation” theme, which is a theme that always touches my heart.
Love’s Silver Lining is full of ornery characters who many times believe that they know better than God what path they should take, are unwilling to be still and listen to the truth, and generally make things much harder for themselves than they need to be. It is full of quirky sayings and a few comedic situations that made me laugh out loud. But, it is also full of love…love that builds from romantic attraction, love for family, love for friends, and most importantly, love that an almighty God pours out on the characters of this book.
This author does a great job of creating intense chemistry between characters, while always pointing toward God, who has an intense passion for His people. I loved reading Blaze and Maggie’s story, as well as Finn and Libby’s. I am looking so forward to the next book in this series!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This book has been on my TBR for a very long time, but I'm so glad I finally read it! I have always been a fan of Julie Lessman's work, and this book is chock full of her signature banter, feisty heroines, strong and swoony heroes, and steamy but clean romance. If you enjoy any of those characteristics in a book, then I definitely recommend you give this one a try!
This is the first time I've read a book by Julie Lessman. I really loved this Christian romance with a western setting in Virginia City, Nevada. There are two main couples whose stories we read about in this book.
The first couple, Finn and Libby were introduced in a previous book. The author does a great job of filling in the blanks if you haven't read the first book. This book really stands on it's own. They were previously married and have been apart for 17 years. An interesting serious of events bring the two of them back together, whether they want it or not.
The next couple, Blaze and Maggie were actually my favorite. Their dialogue back and forth will leave you laughing so hard. Their chemistry in the book is undeniable. They both are a lot alike in what they want and don't want and this gets in their way a lot. Their first meeting is one of the best and funniest scenes I've read in a book this year. Honestly, I wish I could share it with you but I don't want to spoil the fun for you.
This book does have many Christian themes running throughout it's pages and they go along with life changes and lessons that the characters learn. I thought it all was beautifully written. There is a level of hotness when it comes to several of the kisses between our couples in the book, but it never goes farther than that; so this book would be under the label of a clean read. This book is best described by the author herself whose tagline is: Passion with a Purpose, putting romantic passion in it's proper place with God's precepts.

Cowboys, Sizzling Romance, and a Julie Lessman novel, the perfect trifecta for me! While there is a novella that introduces us the Liberty and Finn's story, this book kicks off the series. And what a kick off it is!
Ms. Lessman has a way of creating family saga novels that capture your heart and make you feel like a member of the family. With all of their craziness the McShane's are definitely a family you want to be apart of.
Ms. Lessman's tagline is Passion with a Purpose, putting romantic passion in it's proper place with God's precepts. The sizzle flies off the pages, but nothing inappropriate or that crosses the line.
Forgiveness, healing, trust and learning how to deal with one's temper seem to be the main themes that are woven through the story. Ms. Lessman takes each of these struggles and shows that only the one true God is the only one who can heal, teach you to trust, forgive and help control an Irish temper. Or for me, an Italian temper.
My Bottom Line:
In true Julie Lessman style we have sparks flying between Liberty and Finn, and Maggie and Blaze just like we had in the Daughter's of Boston series. Ms. Lessman creates some fun expletives that Liberty uses quite often as she attempts to put Finn in his place. "Holy Frog Spit." and "When steers fly." are just a couple that you will come across in this book.
The main thing you can always count on in a Julie Lessman book is spiritual lessons that encourage your heart and point you back to our Father.
I highly recommend this book!
Disclaimer: I did receive a complimentary copy, but I also purchased my own copy.
Love's Silver Lining is a fabulous beginning to Julie Lessman's newest series, Silver Lining Ranch. I have to admit, I have not read any of her books before and I am not sure what I have been waiting for. If her other books are like this one, then I have been missing out. I love western fiction and this one does not disappoint. I love the setting, the characters, the vivid details and descriptions, and, of course, the romance. Wow! No wonder this author comes highly recommended in that department. It is, also, full of faith and inspiration that a reader does not want to miss. I give Love’s Silver Lining a well deserved five plus stars. I can not wait to find out what happens next in the the Silver Lining Ranch series. I received this book from the publisher, but was not required to wrire a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
Julie Lessman is known for crossing the line in historical Christian romance. She isn't afraid to touch on the sparks between a man and a woman. While westerns really aren't my genre of choice, I enjoyed following the characters around in Love's Silver Lining. There are moments that made me laugh, and there were moments that made me make sure no one was around. I didn't want anyone to think I was reading an erotica novel. (Not that her novels are anywhere close to that. I haven't read any, so I don't know how detailed the story can get, but I can imagine.) I love the returning characters and seeing them struggle and come alive again, trying to make the wrongs right. If you are fans of Lessman's other writings or enjoy westerns, then this might be the perfect book for you. I enjoyed it.
Lessman takes readers west during the women's suffrage movement to impart lessons of forgiveness, commitment, and redemption in her unique signature style, "Passion With a Purpose."
Maggie Mullaney is an innocent young woman with a compassionate servant's heart. She has patience, wisdom, and a deep anchoring and abiding faith. Blaze Donovan is a charming cowboy ladies man with a temper and a disdain for religion. He is a hard-worker, devoted big brother, always respectful towards his elders, and willing to donate his time and energy to worthy causes.
Silver Lining Ranch sounds like a wonderful place to visit and I'm looking forward to more stories in this series! If you like kisses, almost kisses, irresistible embraces AND challenging, entertaining, and encouraging stories, I enthusiastically recommend this book to you!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
I'm not the intended audience. The story was well written, I'm just not a fan of all the lust. Yes, it eventually turns into godly love between man and wife, but getting there is quite frustrating. And after Libby's story in book 0.5, what's mentioned here about her past doesn't add up to me. All her reasons, experiences, and fears don't calculate in my mind. But hey, mine is the unpopular opinion as always. Give it a try! Finishing this as part of my goal this year to finish previously started series. Onto book 2. Julie has some swoon-worthy cowboys. I'll gladly give her that! I liked all the scriptures!
Oh, yes! MORE of this series, please. Julie Lessman did a wonderful job developing two separate love stories, building on and completing what she started in the opening novella (which I strongly recommend you read first). The sass, the attitude, the fun, the conviction and redemption of multiple characters--so much to enjoy about this extended family as they love and grow together. I can't wait for the release of the next book in a couple of months.
Loved this first book in the Silver Lining Ranch Series! (But I am glad I read the prequel novel first!) The characters all come alive when Julie Lessman writes. Don't miss it!
It's been 17 years since Liberty O'Shea walked out on Finn and their marriage. Now she is back to take care of her parents. What she doesn't count on is being forced to move in with Finn and his family while she and her parents wait for their home to be rebuilt after a fire. Sparks fly from the moment they lay eyes on each other, proving that not much has changed in 17 years.
Maggie is the daughter of Libby's best friend. She has traveled with Libby. While applying for a job at the local hospital a cowboy dressed only in a bedsheet catches her attention. He is determined to escape the hospital no matter what his state of undress is. Fuming that Maggie won't help him find his clothing he takes off anyway. Blaze Donovan is known for his ways with the ladies. Maggie is determined not be be one of his conquests. What happens when she falls for this man that has become her best friend?
Whoa, Whoa, Whoa! If you think sparks were flying between characters in Julie Lessman's Daughters of Boston novels, then you have GOT to get a load of her new Silver Lining Ranch novel! Between the sparks that fly between Libby and Finn(and there are plenty folks!), and Blaze and Maggie's attempt to "just be friends" this readers heart was constantly in a flutter!
One of the things that I enjoy most about Julie's books is that there is always a lesson on redemption. No matter how far a character strays, there is always that point where they realize their need to repent and turn. I loved the lessons that the characters learned in Love's Silver Lining. Forgiveness, repentance, faith, trust. All of those and so much more.
The characters were endearing, from the head nun at the hospital(a jolly soul!), to Blaze's younger sisters Sheridan and Shaley. Shaley's antics crack me up and I love her exuberance in explatives, "Holy frog spit!" being one!
In true Julie Lessman style Liberty was quite the handful. A suffragist who has been hurt by men in the past, she is determined to never be ruled by any man, including the one she married. Headstrong and stubborn she causes quite a few scenes trying to exercise her right to be her own woman. Some of those scenes made me laugh, and some made me want to reach through the pages and shake her!
A wonderful read, with strong female characters and handsome swoony men and great spiritual lessons. Check it out!
Lordy be, another hit from one of my top three favorite authors! Ms. Lessman has brought us back among the Silver Lining Ranch and threw us in the middle of more fun loving characters, more laugh out loud quirkiness, more amazing inspiration. This novel holds deep meaning to me, because one of the characters in this book is named after my own sweet mama, who passed away in 2014. She was my reading partner in crime, and this book made me feel as if she and I were reading it together. I know my mama would have loved this book, this whole series really, and would say that Julie Lessman is one of her top authors as well!
From the start, Maggie and Blaze's banter and wit really flew off the page. I fell in love with both of them instantly! I love how the sparks were strong between them. I could feel their connection like it was my own. I loved following their story and watching them fall in love.
I love that Mrs. Lessman brought Liberty and Finn in again! I loved them in the prequel, For Love Of Liberty, and I loved them here, too! These characters are so full of love and fun that they really bring the story to life, making it play out more like a movie than a book. I can't wait to see what she has in store for us with the next novel! I know it will be amazing because not only will we get a new front line story, but we will get to catch up with Liberty, Finn, Maggie and Blaze again!
If you are looking for a beyond 5 star book that will make you laugh til you cry, make you feel like you have come home again, make you a part of the family, then look no further than this novel. The love that Mrs. Lessman has for her God, her characters and her books flow into the words on these pages and truly make the reader feel like she wrote the book just for them. Mrs. Lessman has once again capture not just my heart, but my soul, completely and I can't wait til this book is sitting on my shelf next to all the other amazing Lessman novels.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher/author and was under no obligation to post a review, positive or negative.*
Julie Lessman has been one of my favorite authors for several years now, so this review may be a tad biased. I just so enjoy her stories! This book (series) is very different from anything else she’s written. I’m quite enjoying how she’s trying different time periods and genres, and was especially excited for this one, knowing it was going to be a bit of a lighter read and more humorous. Though I’ve found her other books pretty amusing as well, particularly her San Francisco series. I tried to start this book without many expectations. I knew it would have a dual storyline (one of my favorite things in her books) and a strong spiritual element (my very favorite thing about her writing), but other than that, I was just looking to enjoy the ride. And she had me hooked from the opening page! I’m not going to spoil it, but it is very interesting! Ms. Lessman is one of those authors that I’m fairly confident that someone could hand me a random page from one of her books and I could tell you right away that it was one of hers. Her writing style is quite distinct and vivid. I so enjoy getting pulled into one of her stories and seeing life through the characters’ eyes. They are sometimes rather dramatic in their telling, but that’s also part of the fun! And I appreciate how honest her writing is - I’ve rarely, if ever, read stories with characters that were more realistic than hers. Even in the midst of the lighthearted moments and fun, she tackles a few more difficult topics, specifically commitment and trust. Along with a healthy dose of God and the gospel, which I find to be such an encouragement. Her books always include wisdom that seems as though it’s directed straight at me, or something that I know I needed to hear at the time. I enjoy rereading her books for that same reason. If you’re looking for a rather lighthearted read about stubborn cowboys and possibly more stubborn women, then I would highly recommend this book!
Julie Lessman’s newest book, Love’s Silver Lining, picks up 17 years after the prequel, which introduced us to Finn McShane and Liberty O’Shea. Although Finn and Liberty are no longer together, I was so happy to see them reconnect in Love’s Silver Lining after Liberty’s parents became homeless due to a fire. In addition to the story of Libby and Finn, and a twist on their annulled marriage, there was a new relationship forming between Blaze, Finn’s nephew, and Maggie, Libby’s goddaughter.
Libby and Maggie are both suffragettes, and their desire to see women get the right to vote factors into their relationships and the decisions they make in life. I really enjoyed reading about this time in history, and especially how the relationship between Finn and Libby was strained due to Finn’s political aspirations and Libby’s beliefs about women voting. While Libby and Finn’s relationship was strained due to their politics, Maggie and Blaze faced obstacles regarding their faith.
As always, I really enjoyed this book by Julie Lessman. She always writes about strong women, and I always look forward to being introduced to new families in her books. Along with a strong faith, forgiveness and redemption are topics that are a main focus of the book. I can’t wait to visit Silver Lining Ranch again in the next book in the series.

*Warnings* #1 This is a long review, so pull up a chair and grab a bowl of popcorn. You'll be here awhile. #2 When I read a review, I want substantial information. So I will not skimp on the details. Which will mean some spoilers, so watch out.
Wowee! Julie Lessman has done it again! Love's Silver Lining will make you laugh, cry, yell idiot a couple times--of course--keep you up all night, and remind you of the depth of God's all-consuming, never-ending love. Lessman wows the crowd with her authentic depiction of life in the booming Wild West, which is--at the time of the 1880s--straddling the savage land it used to be and blooming big cities it becomes. Her witty characters, humorous situations, and accented prose brings a chuckle bubbling past your lips. But coupled with her gorgeous writing, eye for detail, and perfect pacing, her story is more than hilarious--it's beautiful. And the romance? Well, I don't need to tell you about that, do I? I got the chills several times while reading this book, especially when Mrs. Poppy was around. Julie Lessman knows how to balance the heated passion of romance and the wonderful spirituality that truly makes her books, all else--lovable characters, intriguing plots, marvelous prose--aside. The two stories featured in Love's Silver Lining, the unlikely friendship (ish) between nurse Maggie Mullaney and notorious flirt Blaze Donovan and the rekindled (so two certain mulish men hope) relationship between Liberty O'Shea and Finn McShane, will easily capture your attention. They did mine. 😊 However, this book did me like Unfailing Love. Just like I was more interested--and invested--in Tess and Ben's story than Jack and Lacey's in Unfailing Love, I was certain more captivated by Libby and Finn. Maybe because their story had more plot or the pair more sparks and characterization. Even still, I did really begin to like Maggie and Blaze toward the last half. To me, though, it's Libby and Finn's book, and they really deserved a lot more "screen time" than they got. Or maybe it was Maggie and Blaze who needed a little more on their side. 🤔 Overall, it started out pretty good--a little all over the place--but it evened out toward the second half and really got good then. For some odd reason, despite being 63 chapters long, it seemed really short. Quick pacing and fewer dramatic events than the O'Conners? Or simply me? Speaking of the O'Conners...the McShane/O'Shea/Donovan family aren't the O'Conners. They're not as homey, comfortable, welcoming. They don't have the same family dynamics or the same pull. But they are great in their own way. If you're coming into Silver Lining Ranch expecting the western version of the O'Conners, then you might want to get rid of that bias, because you'll be disappointed. But...if you're hoping this series isn't like the O'Conners and is less dramatic and, well, chaotic, then you've come to the right place. No family but the O'Conners are the O'Conners, so whether you're reading Isle of Hope or Silver Lining Ranch or The Heart of San Francisco, you're not going to get the same feel. But these guys do have a "feel" all their own that will welcome you in. And the biggest welcome belongs to Mrs. Poppy, the "backwoods Yoda" and spiritual mentor, the Mrs. Gerson, of Virginia City. Man, I would have thought that I'd get tired of the idealistic old woman who pours her heart and soul into the main characters...but I haven't yet. I absolutely love--and basically wait for--the scenes that Mrs. Gerson and Mrs. Poppy and Mamaw or whoever are in, giving their spiritual insight and helping those mule-headed idiots we so love see the light. Which is where Maggie comes in. To me, she was more of a secondary character, but when she started pouring into Rachel and even into Libby (not a spoiler, is it?), I got the warm fuzzies inside. One thing out of many that I adore about Julie Lessman is that her characters, even the flawed main ones, will give of themselves and, yes, convert certain characters. From Faith with Brianna to Maggie with Rachel to Shannon with Sam, watching our MCs teach nonbelievers about God and truly evangelize/proselytize makes my heart happy. No other Christian novel/novelist that I've ever read truly depicts Christians, well, acting like Christians. Between messing up terribly to sharing the Gospel, Lessman isn't afraid to show the reader how our walk and our faith is and should be. That's one of those things that just draws me to Julie Lessman--the reality and the fearlessness to show it. Besides, don't you like to read about characters so true to Christ that they'll lead others to Him? Anyway... Love's Silver Lining has a few faults. Basically, I wanted more. More of the characters and their backstories. More action and wee bit more suspense. More drama, even. (Yes, yes. I know. Don't give me that look.) It was not my favorite of Julie's novels, and within it, Libby and Finn's story was preferred simply because I love those characters more. I'm definitely looking forward to Love's Silver Bullet (just got it on my Kindle this morning!) and Jake and Sheridan, with whom I'm already in love. Regardless, I love the way Lessman handled the issues the characters put up with and their views--specifically Liberty's. She somehow manages to, well, balance everything just right. And, yes, that's one of those things I always say about her novels, simply because it's an ongoing truth with all that she writes! Oh, and, yeah, Libby drove me insane. I still love that stubborn mule of a girl. 😉❤
Long story short, Love's Silver Lining isn't The Daughters of Boston or Winds of Change. And that's a good thing. This series has a draw all its own that pulls you in and introduces you to some amazing characters and their stories. It's heartwarming and hilarious, another reason why everyone should pick up a book by Julie Lessman. Her passion for God-honoring romance and for Jesus Christ is contagious. (For real. I'm noticing in my own writing a strange leaning toward hip slacking, neck cuffing, long sermons preached by kind Yoda-like mentors, Irish Catholics, and hot kisses. I've got a problem, y'all.)
Maggie Mullaney is a young nurse and unofficial niece of Libby O’Shea. When she heads to Virginia city with her Aunt to try and get a job at the local hospital, she ends up with more than she bargained for. Blaze is the handsome rogue in town that everyone warns the beautiful young ladies to steer clear of. Blaze works on his Uncle Finn’s ranch and is actually a very kind person regardless of his roguish ways. The first time Maggie and Blaze meet the sparks sure fly and it just gets better from there. I absolutely Love this story. Not only do we get to see what happens to Blaze and Maggie but we get to see what has been going on with the feisty Libby and Finn. I love the storyline and all of the characters. This was a sweet, heart melting romance. Although there was plenty of sass and stubbornness to go around. It made me swoon and gave me butterflies. This story in parts also had me on an emotional rollercoaster, one minute I am smiling and maybe even blushing a little and the next I am broken hearted. a little but put it back together. It made me want to skip ahead and peek at the end, but I didn’t and it did mend my heart and make it very happy. I could not put this book down, it was one that you just wanted to stay up late reading. I loved the emotional journey I went on with these characters. I also love how Julie Lessman always incorporates great life lessons in her stories, lessons about forgiveness and not getting in our own ways. I would highly recommend this book and can not wait for more in this series!!
Love's Silver Lining is a fun western romance with entertaining matches of wits and a strong thread of faith. It's Bonanza-meets-McLintock with its familial-cast and clashing romantic couples, complete with two that strongly remind me of John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara with his determination and her fiery temper!
In Julie's signature romance style, this story follows two different couples as they navigate their shared histories, pride, stubbornness, and attraction. While Blaze and Maggie's relationship has rivalry and plenty of spark, my most favorite parts of the story involve the other prominent couple, Finn and Liberty, whom you can meet in the prequel novella, For Love of Liberty. The importance of faith (especially a shared faith within a marriage), and many facets of trust are naturally incorporated into the story, along with encouraging scriptures.
From its wild west setting to its suffragists, train rides, and kisses, Love's Silver Lining is just the right sort of western for romance lovers that offers a smile and an encouraging message. I'm excited to see where the next book in the series takes these characters! (And I hope there will be more of Finn and Liberty's sparring!)
Thank you to the author and SLB tours for a review copy. This is my honest review.
Classic Julie Lessman Romance, but not my favorite
I was hooked on Julie Lessman’s writing after reading A Passion Most Pure. I LOVE that book. Her style and voice are full of whit, charm and sweetness. But the plot just didn’t do it for me with this book. And the history didn’t grab me like the Daughters of Boston. I felt like the story meandered a lot. I kept waiting for the official moment where all hope seemed lost and then everything would come together and tie up in a satisfying way. And it did. But it was more like there were a bunch of little moments. And some of the things that were a big deal seemed like they didn’t get the attention I expected them too. And this was just a personal thing. The romantic plot goes back and forth between Libby & Finn and Maggie & Blaze. But I found myself picking a favorite couple and skimming to get to where their story came up again. So, while I did finish this book quickly, staying up late to do so, it was kind of an impatience thing rather than a “hook.” Let it be clear - I still love Lessman’s writing. This book just wasn’t my favorite.
Ok. To be quite honest with you westerns aren't my favorite genre although I do love Christian historical fiction. But who in their right minds would miss out on a chance to devour a book by the "Queen of Passion", Ms. Julie Lessman? One that is filled with hunky, dimpled cowboys who are womanizing rogues, intimate lantern lit barn dances, and sparks a'plenty? Not to mention plenty of tears and angst (mostly mine.) lol!
So much more than a simple romance, I totally delighted in the spiritual lessons that Lessman interspersed in each characters' life to help them find hope, inner healing, and salvation. A hilariously side-splitting, electrifying novel filled with romantic tension and set on a beautiful sprawling ranch—be sure to put Love's Silver Lining at the top of your wishlist! And don't be surprised if you hear the gentle sounds of a harmonica wafting on the breeze while reading...
I had a hard time waiting for this book to be available! I loved For Love of Liberty and anticipated the next book in this series! The sparks fly as always, and Libby and Maggie are wonderful and feisty female characters that give life and fire to the pages of Love's Silver Lining. It was definitely worth the wait! And as always, the pages were also filled with God's truth, assuring that characters and readers alike are pointed to where true freedom is found, in the love and grace of Jesus! I'm so thankful for this author and the way she has such a unique blend of romance, passion, fun, and truth all neatly rolled into all of her stories I can never get enough of Julie's books and revisit them like old friends whenever the opportunities arise! I'm already counting down the days until book 2 is released!! :)
Be sure to read For Love of Liberty before you start Love's Silver Lining.
We've got some serious control issues here. Liberty fears Finn's control over her life. Finn tries to take control by running for mayor. Blaze fears Maggie will try to control him with her faith. And Maggie has to learn to control a horse to drive to work.
I especially enjoyed the hospital scenes - patients haven't changed in the past 133 years!
I loved the main heroine Maggie and hero Blaze. I also enjoyed Finn. A must read. I can tell this series is going to be really good. Lessman can write any time period and it will be amazing. Read the prequel first. Her books are always worth the money, even the novellas.
THIS BOOK!😍 While it definitely wasn't what I was expecting, it was still great! The romance, the journeys of faith, family, and everything else was perfect. Really enjoyed this first novel in Julie's new series.
Five fiery stars for this romance filled with emotional sparks as two couples journey to find happily ever afters!
Escaping an unwanted engagement, young nurse Maggie Mullaney arrives in Nevada to begin her work in a hospital. While she is usually a sweet, compassionate young woman, her fiery side shows as she interacts with rancher Blaze Donovan, “a match made in heaven.....but during a celestial lightening storm.”
Suffragette Libby O’Shea remains independent and focused on her goal of promoting women’s rights. She is coerced to return to her hometown of Virginia City, Nevada, and must confront her former love, Finn McShane.
I enjoyed this book for many reasons! Spending time with these characters is so fun.....the ups and downs, the struggles and the delightful interactions. Sometimes I wasn’t sure how their situations could be resolved, since there are major issues keeping the couples apart. I was engrossed with the challenges they faced. A double romance made for double the fun! Featuring influential western families facing struggles together and using the strength of family bonds and faith, this story reminded me of old television sagas like Big Valley and Bonanza. I love this book, this family and the beautiful message about marriage!
A favorite quote: Love is the soil in which trust flourishes, but trust is the seed that allows love to bloom.
This book follows two sets of main characters as they fight their way to find love...or thwart it. The very first chapter had me laughing out loud! The book already had me hooked from the beginning. Poor Finn in the hospital trying to get out of there in any way possible, with or without clothes! Maggie learns to steer clear of him from that moment, but when she ends up staying at the ranch Finn's uncle owns, where Finn is the foreman, avoiding him is impossible. When sparks fly between them, do they stand a chance? The second couple is Liberty and Finn. They were married for a couple months seventeen years ago, but both of them had a temper and they sent their seperate ways, getting their marriage annulled...or so they thought. When Liberty's father drops a bombshell on them and forces them to be on the same ranch for 6 months as one another, will they rekindle what they once had? Or will the sparks that fly when tempers flare burn them both? The main theme between both of these couples is that a relationship or marriage without God in it is easily torn apart, so until both people truly believe in God and walk with Him, there is no future for the relationship. I received a copy of this book from the author, but was not required to write a review. All opinions within this review are my own.
