This is a very engaging series. I'm excited that Book 4 is coming out so soon... will be reading it next week. Basically, this series is imagining a 'regular guy' finding himself in a struggle for the continuance of mankind after finding his personal life was not at all what he thought it was. The 'enemy' was right there among everyone all the time, and were husbands and wives to normal humans. I really do recommend this series and it's available on Kindle Unlimited. Start with Book 1. Although they aren't classic cliffhangers, there is more adventure in the next books.

What Hystad lacks in Maths, Physics, English, basic fact checking and effort, he almost makes up with truly original story ideas.

Just one example, 400 people every 5 minutes is 400x288 people per day, or 115,200 a day. That’s just over half a million people in 5 days. The other half fit on a few warships apparently (really?). So only 1m were left of the ~3billion after the event? There’s loads of examples where distances, time and numbers are just plucked out of thin air without the pretence of trying to make something consistent or believable. Like when 7billion people were stuck in some cubes where each room held ~1,000 people, and it didn’t take days to get to the centre...

If you can ignore his bizarrely careless writing, his distractingly bad grammar, and non-existent editing - there’s a potentially great story being smothered somewhere in there.

This story has really zoomed out to something totally different. In book 1, “The Event”, our main character, Dean Parker, managed to save the human race by wiping out an entire other race, the Kraski, who were bent on sending Earth humans into the sun! That race, the Kraski, were undeer the thumb of the Deltra who planned the extinction of humanity so they could have Earth. They even made the Kraski create a hybrid humans who were planted on Earth to prepare for the invasion. Of course, Dean Parker and his friends managed to save the day although millions of humans did die. That should have been the end of it.

Now, we find that after chasing down two hybrids that Dean thought were going to tell the Bhlat the location of Earth, he’s returned to an Earth he doesn’t know. Things have changed, like seven years of change! While they have been traveling FTL, time for everyone else has been moving along and now seven years have past for everyone, but Dean, Mary, Nick, Clare and Slate who were aboard the Kraski-built starship. They don’t like the changes on Earth nor the direction the current President is heading. So they decide to head for the colony world New Spero.

Their reception isn’t what they thought it would be at first. They seem to always get into some kind of trouble and this was no different. They arrive at the New Spero space station and are immediately taken into custody. You’ll have to read the book to find out how they got down to the planet.

This story doesn’t just end on New Spero. They find out that even after all their efforts, the Bhlat have found Earth. They also find out that the current Earth President has made a deal with the Bhlat which Dean Parker and friends know isn’t going to honored by the Bhlat. All the Bhlat want Earths resources and they will use humans to mine what they need. They also want Earths water and will take it by force if necessary. The Bhlat have conquered many, many other civilization and have done the same thing to their worlds. Earth is to ignorant of galactic events to understand they have basically doomed humanity if not for the colony world of New Spero.

So does New Spero own any allegiance to Earth? Should they be sending their armada to support Earth and attack the Bhlat? There’s not that many humans established on New Spero, but those they do have are very capable. They have turned a barren world into an oasis in just seven years. Still, Earth is home to humanity and they probably aren’t going to just let the Bhlat have it, or are they.

Dean and Slate, meanwhile, has gone looking for his sister who moved to New Spero with the original colonist. She has been taken by some intelligent animals as food for later. While attempting to rescue her, Dean stumbles across an unknown portal room and is instantly transported to a deserted planet. How he gets back is very fortunate, but it does lead to him finding a very hidden secret about the galaxy. This might change everything and finally put an end to the Bhlat.

The story is good, but the things that happen are kind of predictable. Additionally, something is always working out in favor of Dean Parker and his friends. The story-line seems a little simple and sometimes not very imaginative, but that’s just my opinion. There does seem to be a path now for the author to write many more books with Dean Parker and Mary involved.

This book's story is a real space opera, involving several alien species and their worlds, and action and evil aliens, as well as fascinating ancient alien mysteries. Just like I love them. In this third book there isn't so much casual killing and more remorse of and insight into the necessary violence. The end note is despite everything a hopeful and uplifting one.

Very good series, so far. Just a few minor issues in believability of concept the interrupt the willing suspension of disbelief. Reverse engineering of advanced technology, hundreds or even thousands of years advanced, in just seven years, and in some cases just two, is frankly unbelievable. We could take a Sherman tank from WWII, and drop it in the 1890's and they would figure it out fairly quickly, though not in that time span, but if we dropped an iPhone in the hands of WWII era scientists and it would take decades. We might be able to use some advanced features from far advanced civizilations, but copy it and mass produce? That would REALLY be fiction. The barter system is an early version of capitalism, and anathema to Socialism. If you wanted to trade a book for some carrots, you would be stealing both from the collective. You don't own the book, or any other property, and anything you produce, whether carrots, or the Mona Lisa belong to the collective, for distribution, or display, as the collective decides. You don't own your house, you don't own the land you farm, you don't own the paper or computer you are writing on and you have little say about what happens to it. Please read Marx and Engles. It's okay if you are for Socialism, just get your concepts right. And maybe read some Adam Smith too.

Dean Parker and his team traveled deep into space and hit a time warp. When they returned, most of earth thought they'd died. Seven years had passed. That's the situation Nathan Hystad's space-faring protagonist learned upon his return to his home planet and the new one colonized by humanity's survivors in "New World," the third installment of the Survivors series. While he and Mary remain together, their bond had been tested. Dean's understanding of the past also got a reboot when he learned that the woman he'd originally loved hadn't died like he'd thought. So the heroes of earth as the team is known again land on their home planet, they find not all remained the same. Political forces have also changed. Earth's governments didn't survive, nor did Dean and crew's allies. And forces beyond what the Kraski's capabilities now threaten every remaining human being. The threat may be the most significant and potentially deadly since the Event. And only Dean, Mary and Slate have clue as to what they can accomplish. And again Hystad surprises in what transpires and how Dean comes up with a possible fix. But it comes with a cost.

"New World" is a great continuation of the Survivors series. The Heroes of Earth team up with some old friends and some new ones to address the threat of the Bhlat against Earth and humanity. Hystad's writing is consistent with his previous books, creating interesting characters and unique environments. Each new development in the story keeps me turning pages and not wanting to put the book down.

The Survivors series isn't hard science, nor is it magic and fantasy. It is the story of some reluctant heroes who do what is necessary to live up to the responsibilities that have been forced upon them. It is an adventure that started on Earth and has carried them to locations across the Galaxy where they have learned about new technologies, new people, and themselves. It is a great adventure with characters you would want as friends.

Thinking that this was the last book in the series, I was delighted to learn there are three more. So, off we go to discover who "The Ancients" (book #4) are and how they fit in to our story.

This book is extending the universe and pushing the plot beyond the scope of the initial premise of the series.

This book takes the almost science of the first 2 books and pushes the technology towards magic. Things that are hard to imagine to be possible are constantly touted as routine.

This is not a plot breaking issue at the moment, but it sliding toward being a bit silly.

However, this book is fun, fast paced and engaging. The characters and new races are well described and feel like they fit into the plot presented.

Luke Daniels does an excellent job, again, at narrating this series. Same attention to quality from. The first 2 books.

All in all, this is a good addition to the series. Noting feels too out of place, but it has the potential to become silly, if the author isn't careful.

I look forward to the next

Great story, clean, excellent narrator

3rd book in series, plausible storyline, clean and great narrator. Read the 1st 2 books first. I don't think it could stand alone very well without the background the 1st 2 books provide.
A regular guy becomes a hero for earth and the new colony on planet Sparrow. Dean explores new worlds, new tech, new predator species and new sentient alien beings while reuniting with his old pals.
Able to hold interest and keep you reading, or listening. The narrator is one of the best I've ever heard. He also narrated the 1st 2 books. I'm going to read the rest of the series too!
Great sci fi, not too many worlds or aliens, good story....no spoilers here.

I'm not going to review each and every of the 18, so far, books in this series because it would be exhausting. Suffice it to say, as I just this morning told my son, to have the talent to write a series of 18 books (so far) and each and every book be as engaging, thrilling and be able to pull a reader right into the story instead of being a spectator to it is so rare and his books do that. From book 1 to the current book 18. Also, these are not novellas or short stories. Each in this series is a full on NOVEL. I've been opened to genres I never thought I'd be interested in before and it's writers like Nathan Hystad that make that possible .... that make reading ..... an important part of my life.

Another solid instalment in The Survivors series, “New World” picks up the story from the previous book. The action, intrigue and suspense continues in this the third episode, they are indeed a page turner. Good, well rounded characters, and surprisingly interesting plotline.

Unfortunately it still includes the science of convenience, and “well that was handy” and “weren’t we lucky that we reversed engineered that in just two seconds”, no, only kidding, just a year. Oh! look I’ve just stumbled upon an intergalactic teleportation device, “wasn’t that handy”. However, that aside, It's still a very engaging and enjoyable read. I will carry on with the saga, regardless of how convenient the books are.

Thrilling ride

I highly recommend this series I have just finished book 3 and usually by now the story gets a bit stale but not this series it's bright and interesting and full of colourful characters that you know are real and I love the dogs in it makes the story so human.
I can't wait to read the next book, I've had a few late nights as once you start reading time flies by.
The people in it are so real and believable you can associate with them,no silly names you can't pronounce , no bad spelling that takes you away from your concentration and ruins the story.
Right! that's all as I need to download the next book.

Dean and everyone on his ship left Earth at the end of book 2 and book 3 starts with reaching Proxima Centauri hoping to find out what is going on. It was great to meet up with most of the important characters from the first 2 books and meet some new people. Of course a few things go wrong and right once they get there. It was full of action, adventure, space travel and Dean ending up trying to save the human race again. It was just a well written entertaining story that caught my attention from the first chapter and kept it until the end. Loved the ending. I really liked this story.

Fantastic

I have held back on actually writing a review of this series of books until now just giving five stars and not saying anything . This series is utterly fantastic and very gripping some amazing twists and turns some very unexpected other's a bit less so . A must read series for any space opera fan and well deserves all the five star ratings I have given so far . I'm going straight on to the next book with one last thing to say keep writing books like this and I for one will keep reading them Mr Nathan Hystad

On the settlement on New Spero

Dean, Mary and Magnus are still fighting for the future of the human race. The fear that the Bhlat were coming for Earth was all too real. Along the way they make new friends and allies to save Earth. Dean has a plan! Magnificent characters and a universe for a playground, the Heroes of Earth will save Earth and fight to save humanity. The author has proven to be a master storyteller and I can't wait to continue the story! Amazing story and a great read!

The Bhlat

This KU library selection propels the story forward as the Bhlat accelerate their plans of overtaking and mining Earth. Dean and Mary remain behind while others return to Earth to determine the status of the imminent invasion, but get a transmission stating "they're already here", then nothing. So plans are made to save their friends and Earth. But as before, it's impossible to plan for everything.

Very good series

I really enjoy the series. Dean makes a great hero. He’s just a good guy. He makes good decisions. For the most part these books are clean. There is some profanity, but it’s clean of sexual contact. I recommend these books for anybody who likes star gate, Star Trek, Star Wars.

In this particular book, Dean had to save the earth from a second attack from an alien race. He discovered a Stargate like device that allows him to travel quicker through the galaxy.

It's OK but the MC continues crying about the horrible things he has done. Fine, it's a good attitude to try to keep but I'm thinking after someone kills enough they might get a bit jaded.

That part doesn't bother me as much as the various characters often making poor decisions. Or a fairly good but obvious decision which everyone is in awe of.

It's OK but just OK. This book is about 6.5 hours long which puts it at 'short novel' length.

I really enjoyed this book and the action and adventuring is great. I was surprised by the ease of ending the big dispute in this book but still enjoyed the read!! I agree with other posters that this book was so much better than 1 and 2. Nathan is advancing his writing skills. I look forward to other books from the author

New worlds, new lives

Thoroughly enjoyed the third book of this series. The development has seemed to flow well the characters rounding out more. The book could almost be longer, but I love that it’s not, it keeps it pacy and full of action with very little down time.
Another great read, looking forward to the 4th book this August!!

Great series

I am loving this series. The characters are well developed and and the story line keeps getting better and better. The lead character, Dean Parker is a true hero with deep humility and great courage. I’m a fan of Isaac Asimov and I’m happy to have found an author I enjoy just as much. Can’t wait to read book #4.

The Series Holds Up To It's Promise

I've finished book 3 and the series has held to its initial promise. The characters have continued to develop and the new ones fit into realistic expectations. The action also continues to draw the reader on into further adventures. Again, we'll worth the price and the time spent.

I have the first box set of the series and book three continues the space adventure where Dean meets with familiar characters while introduced to new ones.

Difficult choices must be made.

There is plenty of action, some romance and intriguing science-fiction possibilities, not all believable but certainly imaginative.

Overall, a good read.

Number three

What can I say? I’m hooked with 20 more to go. Dean Parker and the heroes from Earth are doing everything they can to save humanity on Earth and New Spero. But while Magnus and Natalia safe guard New Spero, Dean is off trying to figure out what the Hybrids are up to but to do so, he must tackle a few missions first to complete the task at hand.

Peace or extinction.

Is earth doomed, can the Hybrids find a place of their own and can the Hero’s of earth succeed again? All great questions, but you’ll have to read the book to find the answers. Unexpected twists and new characters keep the story exciting.
I loved the addition of the comic book and its author!
Another great read, thank you.
