A great novel about Ulysses S Grant, recounting his fights on the battlefield. However, his greatest battlefield is his last one, He is near penniless. He is dying and racing against time to complete his memoirs, the proceeds from which will provide for his wife for the rest of her life. A great portrait of the general.

A very good book. I purchased this at Grant’s Cottage in upstate NY, not too far from Lake George. Worth a visit by the way. I’ve read quite a few books about Grant but this is the first as a novel. The author takes snippets of what is deemed to be credible and weaves them into a novel.
