Joshua II (Einherjar - A Dead Embers Companion Novel) should only be read after Dead Embers to avoid major spoilers.
For Joshua O'Connell, life in Craven was the picture of small-town perfection. Until Bryn Halbrook walked into his life.
Though smitten from day one, he knew she was way out of his league. And then Joshua died.
But that wasn't the end of it.
JOSHUA is a view to what happened off camera during the Valkyrie Series. While Bryn went off on adventure after adventure, Joshua's story continued on its own trajectory. This novel is best read after reading Dead Embers as it contains spoilers and crossover scenes in which we get Joshua's POV and get a feel for what was going on in his mind and heart.
I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognise that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practise given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes...
My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands - I shall forever remain crosseyed.

I’ve loved T.G. Ayer’s Dead Embers and The Valkyrie series, and Bryn Halbrook is one of my favorite characters. This book, and the prior (equally excellent Joshua (which I guess should really be Joshua I) are truly the “companion novels” advertised. It’s a “must” to have read Dead Embers before these books but these do then stand up perfectly by themselves and (especially Joshua II) do a great job of telling what happened to Joshua O'Connell after Bryn went off adventuring. Death is not the ending here and there’s a great story that gets told. Joshua II is also a great fit as book 7 of the author’s The Valkyrie series and essential for those who have read the prior series’ books.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The whole Valkyrie series is just amazing...the story is so easy to read, the characters are all well developed, and this is actually a book about an alternate POV from one of the secondary characters in this series. With this book, we get to find out what thoughts were going through Joshua's head while he goes through his own share of adventures around the same time as the MC, Bryn, is experiencing hers in the earlier novels in this series. If you are a fan of YA fantasy with mythological ties, you will love this book.
When I read the book from the point of view of Bryn, Joshua was sometimes infuriatingly confusing. This book sheds a completely different light on his person. Maybe he isn’t deliberately sending mixed signals. That’s a relief, because who needs more confusion when there are already so many mysteries?
‘Only’ four stars because I kept wishing it was all part of one story with alternating points of view. Now I already know most of what’s going to happen. But it’s great to know the other side of the story!
I'm very much enjoying seeing thing's from Joshua's point of view.
Some of the events from "Dead Embers" were interpreted one way by Bryn, and seen an entirely different way by Joshua. His perspective really "changes" what I thought had been going on.
It's also interesting to see things from a "Warrior" point of view, not just that of a Valkyrie.
I'm looking forward to finding out more about the Valkyrie series, from Joshua's point of view :-)
This is a companion book to the Valkyrie series seen from the point of view of Joshua. We also get to see what Joshua does when he's not with Bryn. He does have adventures with other warrior's. And his interpretation of adventures with Bryn and Aimee are sometimes very different from those same memories coming from Bryn. I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Enjoyed getting more background on one of the other players in this magical story. Loved the Valkyrie series, and the fact that one of the other characters is getting his own series is a bonus! Everyone sees and hears things from a different perspective, and the reader gains some insight into Joshua's feelings and the reasons for the way he acts and speaks.
I love reading Joshua's story and seeing the different perspectives in what Bryn sees, Joshua loves Bryn so much, that you feel the hurt he feels. He holds so much in cause he does not want to hurt others. You should read the Valkyrie Series so you can compare and see more into the story line. I received an arc copy for my honest review.
I love this series. There’s no telling what comes next because you won’t be able to. I can tell you that this is a wonderful story. One that calls to you to finish reading until you reach the end. I would recommend this series to everyone.
Valkyrie is a great series and this companion novel to dead Embers is a wonderful addition to the series. Being able to see the story from Joshua's point of view helps the reader understand more in depth. Looking forward to more in this series and from this Author
I love this series! It perfectly companions the Valkyrie series, and it is great to see Bryn and the events that happen from Joshua's point of view. Well written, with excellent characters and plot. Fast paced action with a few twists thrown in! Looking forward to Joshua II!I!
This tale is a welcome addition to the growing Dead Embers series. I love this character and am thrilled to have as much of him as the author is willing to dish up. Don't read out of order but this is a fantastic series that has everything in it to bring out all your feels.
A pretty good continuation, and I liked the action part of the story a lot. I do think there could be better development of the romance. There were a lot of scenes where he could have easily told his lady he liked her, but didn't!
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.
I enjoyed reading this book 📚, it has a great storyline. I can't wait for more from this author. I received this book as a FREE ARC copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
This is a great addition to the Valkyrie series. It was so nice to see into Joshua’s heart. I also found it a good perspective of what the warriors go through not just Valkyries. Well worth the read.
Another great in this superb series. The Valkyrie series is one I’ve enjoyed from the beginning. The characters are extremely realistic and the story is fast paced. Received a free copy and reviewed because I love these books.
“Young man, there will come a day when you discover your true destiny...You are more than what you know.”
I love reading a story and getting two characters’ points of view on the same events. In Joshua II we see what has happened to Joshua on a parallel timeline to the events in Bryn’s life. These events are particularly heinous and traumatic because they strike at the core of who Bryn is, have the taint of conspiracy and betrayal, and leave Joshua aching for Bryn and because of her. He can’t seem to face his feelings for her and instead puts himself squarely in the friend zone while trying to deal with his anger and impotence. This novella fills in some gaps and poses more questions and thereby adds a depth and dimension to the Valkyrie series. It is so well written and engaging, building up the world of Valkyrie and Einherjar that T.G. Ayer had imagined. Whether you’re a longtime fan of this author or a new initiate, you’ll delight in this companion novella, but it must be read in its correct order or it won’t make any sense. If you are a fan of Annie Bellet, Elle Casey and Julie Kagawa, you’ll enjoy T.G. Ayers style and stories.
