Hell Is a Harem #1

Hell is a Harem: Book 1

Rate this book
A human, a hellhound, and an archangel walk into a bar…
Sounds like the first line to a joke, right?
Only it's no joke…it's my damned life.
Witches are running riot.
Shifters are on the hunt.
Demons are eating humans.

There's a new drug on the street. Sigil is dark and deadly…to the paranormal kind, opening up their second sight, urging them to maim, torture, and kill.
And the bodies are piling up.

For me it's an opportunity to get off The Circle's shit list and back in the black, because the Circle's Paranormal First Response Squad is more than my job, it's my legacy.

So here I am, scoping out the only known distribution site, a hell-raising bar called Wicked, trying like hell to keep my eyes off the archangel who refuses my advances, and the hellhound who wants me six ways to Sunday.
He whispers dangerous things that sets my pulse racing, turning toward the human, Inspector Titus Banks, and archangel Gabriel, who gives me a wink.

Oh my damn heart…this is gonna be a long-ass night.
Hell really is a Harem.

*This is a dark reverse harem urban fantasy series. If you love your stories hot with a whole lotta sass then this book is for you. Welcome to the dark side.

I have been an avid reader for longer than I can remember, desiring the darker, edgier works of Bram Stoker, Stephen King, Dean Koontz. I first started writing in High School giving that away when my first attempt was nothing more than dribble. I wish now that I kept at it, pursued it with a hunger that I currently possess.

Writing is my passion, it is what fuels the fires inside of me and it is an all-or-nothing furnace that keeps me up at all hours.

I am married to a wonderful supportive husband, I have 2 wonderful kids and the best friends that I have waited some 35 odd years to meet.

i read books, not minds. there needs to be something more than jumbled, unfinished thoughts to create a book. words create the visuals only the author sees. word vomit creates confusion and a desire to burn the words right out of existence. this felt too much like reading a movie without visual cues. trying too hard to be witty while spectacularly failing at basic composition does not make you a great - or interesting- writer. this author needed editing or just basic story telling practices. there was no real flow to this overdone, clichéd, grammatically deficient flurry of words. editing was obviously not done and any of the so called reviews that highly praise this deficient piece of "writing" was done so either with incentive or through an illiteracy filter. btw, it's eau de, not aude de. it's literally basic french that's written on every trying-to-be-fancy perfume ad/bottle.

Chaos.

This novel is like a fever dream. MC POV reads like an acid trip. I like that all the dudes are distinct, but that’s pretty much hard to make out over confusion. The writing is eloquent and beautiful, but flows in random directions like the morning after an all-nighter fueled by truck stop percolating-for-3-days espresso. I might read the next one, but it isn’t a high priority.

An excellent new series

KU
This is a well rounded out urban fantasy complete with fae, vampires, shifters, witches and the indominitable demons. The reverse harem element didn’t kick in until the second half of the novel and if anything this was my only problem with the way the book was set up. The love factor suddenly rears its head, seemingly out of the blue together with the morals of the staid police inspector.

All up this is a good paranormal action novel and book two is a must read.

You speak as though there was a choice in the matter. There’s no choice, not when it comes to matters of the heart. - Raven DarkMoon

Book one is a pleasing start to a series. It is a fantastic way to introduce all the players their main powers balanced with a reasonable amount of plot and some intimacy (both physical and emotional). Kim Faulks has established some interesting rules for her world, it remains to be seen whether she can obey them for any serious time. The writing is well done. It is sex and love positive, Lorn knows what she wants and she's willing to go for it. Not because it's normal necessarily but because she had role models in love and because she was raised to be herself. Honestly, it's been a bit since I read a reverse harem where the relationship between the men wasn't established. It's refreshing. There are complications, not everyone is happy with the situation and that is perfect. It's hard enough for a woman to agree to this sort of sharing but to me it would be even harder for the males involved, they have to shut down some serious base instincts for the relationship to be effective.

Book One is quite character driven and I really like the main characters (as one is supposed to) and the supporting cast. Lorn Payne is the protagonist a 22 year old witch. Her men are all very different physically and emotionally, she is drawn to them in ways she doesn't understand. Titus is her human, a police detective. He has a history with the supernatural. It's fantastic to see the man as the weaker character. Having to fight for his place at her side because of what he is deemed capable of handling. Gabriel is the archangel Gabriel. He's a flirt, and he and Lorn have a history. He's exactly what you think an angel in a romance series would be hot as sin. Rival is a Hellhound. Really doesn't like Gabriel (go figure). A predator on the best possible way, all power and dominating sex. His eyes are sensational, telling so much about his mood. I had a serious reaction to Rival (and not just because he is physically attractive all tattoos blazing eyes). The support cast are there not just as filler but with a serious role, names, stories and obviously well thought out. It feels like a passion project or something that has been in the authors' mind for a long time just slowly developing.

I do feel like the blurb is a bit misleading. That is the last scene in the book if it lines up to any at all. At this point, I would say this is definitely one for supernatural lovers who enjoy reverse harem as well. That may change as time goes on, as this appears to be heading towards a slow burn plotline and this is really good at the moment.

Daddy Dearest!

I have to say that at the beginning of the story I was a bit confused, but as I read on I began to get the real jist of it and I must say I really liked the concept....

Lorn has always struggled with the fact that she had no loving parents growing up, her mother died and her father just walked out on them. She was raised by her maternal grandmother a very powerful witch, a hunter. She's had a pretty hard life and it has only gotten worse, she is given the lowest jobs at the Circle and she can't even maintain a relationship. The guys that she has the hots for, don't even want a kiss from her... Until the human Inspector Titus, Rival the hellhound and even Gabriel the archangel decide it's time to let it all hang out....In other words, their feelings.
Now it's time for the unfurling of her true powers and she finds that there was a reason for all the lies her whole life.
The coming of Lorns real father!

I can't wait to find out what's coming next for Lorn.

Oh Em Gee I absolutely loved this story. It is an awesome beginning to a new series by Ms. Faulks. I voluntarily chose to read an advance copy and once again I am floored with her talent to convey so much angst, feelings and emotions. I have no problem recommending this to anyone who enjoys both paranormal and reverse harem stories.

In this opener we meet Lorn and the men she has fallen for Titus, Gabriel and a hellhound whose name escapes me at the moment. Lorn works for The Circle who police the supernatural beings. It was created by her grandmother Alma and it was supposed to be her inheritance but things got screwed by a wolf in. Titus is an Inspector for the human police and contrives to have Lorn work with him. Gabriel is an archangel who promised to protect. These characters have many twists and turns before they are brought together as a cohesive group.

Lorn is a witch that is busy taking out demons . She knows that something big and bad is coming and is not sure what . All the last demon said to her was that " Sigil showed me the way . Showed me everything . And it was glorious . " Now I usually do not read anything that does not have a HEA and this one gave me a hint of the book . Since it is only the first 2 chapters that I received . But by this teaser it does sound like it will be a great book ! Now I do hope that the entire story that this teaser goes with will be a complete one and not one that continue into several books . Kim Faulks is an amazing author who can pull a reader in from the first page and yes this teaser did just that !

Disjointed. I am not a mind reader, and this book had me practicing the skill, which I don't have, at every turn it seemed. One of the things I severely dislike, getting lost, and not in that good way. I was so lost in some spots that I had to go back and reread the same paragraph or conversation to try and figure it out.
I liked the idea of the storyline, but not the execution. I felt like there should have been some history between Lorn and Titus, but there really wasn't any beyond mentioning she seen/worked with him before and how hot he looked. Then the hellhound, Rival? I still don't quite understand where he came from or what the heck happened there. I mean, I think I get it? Don't even get me started on Gabriel, the archangel. Any scene he's in, go ahead and throw reason out the window. I can't comprehend what is actually going on at that moment. Like a puzzle that's missing those important edge pieces, you spend all your time looking for them to actually start the puzzle, only to find there aren't any there.
All in all, I felt like this was half a story. It was lacking in background, history, description, detail, and could use some tweaks to dialogue to have it make sense.

DNF 😭
I finish most books. Even if I hate them I can usually find something that endears me to a story. Full of grammar and spelling mistakes? Fine. As long as the feeling is there. That magic. The idea. A fresh take. Or a character that’s likeable or dark enough that you would revel in their ruin or triumph.

My problem with this one is the MCs chaotic thoughts are given priority over clear story telling. I just couldn’t carry on. When she gets drugged outside the headquarters, next to Redemption’s car; all of a sudden there’s Titus (who’s last location was the police station). What the hell is he doing there? Why not the angel who’s had at least one useless appearance at the crime scene or Redemption?- It’s his car and he’s already collected his next job. As if this wasn’t hard enough to read we also add drug brain to the mix.

If this had a good edit and some bits added to it that weren’t strictly from the MCs perspective it would be a ok read. An ok read with a coffee guzzling, angry, scruffy but still hot enough to have three guys after her cleché of a character, but an ok read. I really don’t think I’ll be checking out the next one.

This book started off so good. The story was great the main female character was likeable, the male character was interesting, but then I got about 60% in and it just got weird. Story went off the rails and became secondary to the development of the RH relationship. One of the men just appeared and for no rhyme nor reason she fell in love? Was quite disappointed with the last 40% and can only hope that the author concentrates as much on the premise as she does in the harem in the next book.

2.3🌟

This book has been a clear example of how a book can go from being a 5 star and a possible favorite, to going down and having only 2.3 stars.

The book had a good premise, when I read the synopsis I was like; "wow, I have to read this book." It had everything I liked, a witch, mystery, paranormal world, the archangel Gabriel as a possible partner. It had everything to be my favorite book.

I'd never read a book with herem in it, but it wasn't something I cared about, and I wouldn't have until the hellhound showed up (I can't remember his name), but I'll talk about that later.

About the characters;

I really liked the characters, I really liked Lorn's personality and I found his backstory very interesting, and I think he maintained the same attitude almost throughout the book. Although when I was 70% of the way through the book, there were some scenes where I was a little like, "girl, you're not making any sense."

Titus was a character I really liked too, he also had an interesting backstory although it was a shame they didn't go into more depth, but in general I found him interesting and I loved the interactions he had with Willow.

With Gabriel? Guys, I can't be biased, I'm a fan of the archangel Gabriel, and when I started reading the book and saw him appear I jumped up and down with excitement. He's my favorite guy. I liked the fact that they already knew each other and everything, it was refreshing and you could definitely see that he really loved Lorn and wanted to take care of her. Lorn was basically telling him she didn't want to see him again, saying horrible things to him and yet he was there to protect her.
I'm not saying the others don't, but Gabriel and Lorn knew each other for years, not a few days or 24 hours, so the bond was stronger in my opinion.

Now, the hellhound, I can't remember his name, sorry. He showed up towards the end of the book, about 70% of the way through, and that's when the whole book kind of went downhill for me. But I'll go into more detail about why later. He's a character that I didn't really get into, I feel flat about him, he's a character I haven't gotten to know yet and the only thing I know about him is that within 24 hours he was dating Lorn romantically and sexually. It was kind of like; "Oh, wow, what's going on?." I just think that the character should have had more development time, that in the second book it was either that Lorn and her start falling in love or that they start dating. I just felt like he just showed up and it was all very forced.

The other characters, like Lucifer, Redemption, Lorn's aunt, etc., I found them very interesting and not at all flat. It's true that Lucifer has only been around for a microsecond, but he's already made an impact. Redemption, well, I hate the character but because he's so well written, I'd see him appear and feel like he was standing right in front of me talking to me. I felt like throwing him out the window. I never really liked him, and I was right, but that's what I liked. Still, I wouldn't like him to become part of the herem to be honest, I feel like it's a no-no.

About the story;

The story started off very well, I finished half the book in less than 24 hours. It was a light, easy and entertaining read. I loved the characters, the plot was driving me crazy with intrigue, I saw that there was a slow but steady development of love; for example, the scene in Lorn and Titus' restaurant. The drug investigation was developing very well, I liked this element of fantasy, folklore and mystery, as well as how the author explained the worldbuilding and how the agency where Lorn worked worked.

Then the hellhound showed up, and everything went out the window. From that point on, I started to have a harder time reading the book. I felt like that whole moment was very rushed, like right from the start Lorn and he seem madly in love, like Lorn says she's never felt that way in her life and that no one has ever cared that much about her, and Gabriel is right there in front of them like; 🕴🏻. It was really like; "Lorn, dude, are you blind?".

I don't mind the polyamory, I don't mind Lorn and Titus having a thing and already being a couple, because throughout the book there was already something forming, there was a development. What bothered me is that in less than 24 hours Lorn and the hellhound were already a couple and swore eternal love to each other. I didn't find it realistic, I didn't like it, it all happened so fast. The way she said she'd never felt so loved, that no one had ever cared for her, and there she had Gabriel taking care of her for years, clearly getting jealous and emotionally wrecked when he saw her with the hellhound and Titus. What Lorn was saying didn't make sense, with Titus she'd already seen the chemistry and the development, but with the hellhound... there was almost no interaction and she was already madly in love.

Not to mention that after making love, and in a rather creepy way Gabriel appeared afterwards (I can't defend him on this) and she gave Gabriel an ultimatum, after he always took care of her, showed himself vulnerable, exposed his feelings for her, it made me angry because what Lorn was reproaching her for didn't make sense. I got even angrier when he said that to be with her he would have to accept the other two. It was all very fast, I don't know. It's true that Gabriel took some time to think about it, but the next day everything was done. The whole herem was already set up, being only the first book.

My biggest problem was definitely that, it seemed like the author gave it a very quick ending on the romance level, I would have liked it more if the Herem had been added little by little. Maybe in the first book it was Titus or Gabriel, or the two, then in the second one another was added to the relationship and so on. I feel that would have been better. But without a doubt the hellhound should not have been included on a romantic level, as a couple, until the second book, because he had no previous interaction, no chemistry with Lorn and we didn't get to know him well enough. That was what made the book go downhill.

I feel like everything is chewed up now, that there is nothing more to offer on a romantic level in the plot because everything is already set up.

As a first in series read, I tend to give a little more leeway for what can feel like a multi-directional mishmash of ideas
- both with laying out plot lines and the introduction of characters, that being said :
I enjoyed this read - from the characters to the plots - it was an exciting and engaging ride - I appreciated how the characters fed off one another
Lorn is a strong female lead. She is portrayed as witty, intelligent and determined with a touch of emotional damage - There were a few scenes with her that I wished the author had taken a touch more time to allow "natural" progression - so that I as a reader could have more of an opportunity to become immersed in the scene
The supporting cast - this is probably where I had the greatest trouble with the story - I felt that there needed to be a bit more background to assist me with a more personal connection
I enjoyed the taste I was given -but they are such a unique cast of secondary characters - I do hope we get to know more about them in the next book. -
The same for the plot line(s) as the supporting cast - definitely had me engaged and curious but again I was left a little lost -Faulk just needs to slow down and let me become a part of the story
I am excited to move forward to book two

Angels, Hellhounds, and Demons Oh My

Step into a fantastic world of fantasy as we follow the MC as she learns all kinds of surprising secrets. Lorn is one powerful witch though she is special at the same time. She works as kind of a supernatural cop which leads her right into trouble when a case brings more then she bargains for. Full of all kinds of supernaturals, surprise, and really hot guys. Perfect for fans of supernatural rh novels. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Although it wasn't bad, the flow of this novel was very disjointed for me. I found myself having to back and reread sections because we would jump and I would be lost. The woe is me was overdone in the beginning for me coming from the heroine also, but once she bonded with then two (near the end) it got better.I

Not sure I will continue, but am adding the second to my list with a decision to make later.

Gabriel, Titus, and Rival

Good book! This is a supernatural reverse harem with a slow burn. Witches, Angels, Hellhounds, Demons, Shifters and a whole slew of others keeping secrets. Lots of mystery and suspense in this story as is builds. I can't wait for book two so see what happens next.

I'm not really sure. The story was great and everything but the writingstyle was a little not what I'm used to. And at o e point she goes like "every thing points to the club" but the damn club has only been mention one ime in a bi setting. And had to read some of the sentences twice to get the point of what was being said.

But all in all I liked the story, but was alot confused :)

This popped my reverse harem cherry. I'm still not sure.... I will be reading the second book in series as I liked the world, but hope the romance gets a bit hotter, as a reverse harem has so much potential.

SPOILERS!

Feels like I dropped in in the middle of the series. It was missing the build between the characters. Rather, we were seeing the tail end of the chase/tension build and then the after math where they finally get together.

Gabriel is crazy needy, the complete opposite of how he’s typically portrayed in paranormal books so I found that to be interesting. I actually somewhat like hat Gabriel isn’t your stereotypical Alpha. Gives the group and interesting dynamic.

Oh and something that’s REALLY been bugging me…If Gabriel is Lucifer’s brother, and Lucifer is her father....doesn’t that mean she’s in love with her uncle?

I do really like that there is a human love interest tossed in with the supes.

Great concept, but I felt confused for a lot of the book. Jumped around a lot, didn’t really seem to flow very well. It was kind of rambling at times.

Not much, if any build or growth to the characters. They’re just sort of there. I found myself not particularly caring about any of the characters.

Lorn could be a pretty damn interesting character, I just wish there was more development in general.

Enjoyable

Quite liked this one. The beginning was a little iffy but once the story built up and Lorna finally got some love, that’s when things got good. Favourite character was Rival, the adoring hellhound. I like how he reacts to Gabriel and seems to be the most caring and attentive. A little sex but mainly action and basic needs. Sort of ended on a cliffhanger given questions still need to be answered but not a sudden one.

Outstanding

A witch an Archangel a Hellhound a Human oh my. What a book wow where shall I start.
Once again Kim Faulks has written masterpiece . This story captures your imagination draws you into a world full of magic. This book is so well written you can tell Kim thought hard about where she wanted this story to go and it is amazing.

Lorn thought she knew who she was , where she came from her life was simple . Her mother died her grandmother told her her father was a hippy a differ no one important he did not want to know her he just simple left. But is that the truth. Lorn world around her starts to unravel everything she thought was true is a lie . The company she works for is holding her back paying her crap money for risking her life. Lorn can feel a change coming a dangerous change it unnerves her she know this change is going to be deadly hell on earth. She use to working on her own relaying only on herself but she soon realise she has to start trusting people . The question is when you are so use to being on your own can you learn to open your heart and trust.

Lorn is a powerful witch who is a hunter she hunts wolves demons and goblins etc. Her job is dangerous not for the faint hearted. She meets Titus a sexy strong human who is a cop. Titus needs her help to find his missing wife but all is not what it seems. There is an instant connection between Titus and lorn a deep sexually and so much more connection. But its not the time or place to dwell on what this means. While in a club looking for a demon Lorn meets Rival a drop dead gorgeous sex on legs Hellhound . Lorn feels pure lust and so much more Rival he feels it too and he makes it very clear what he wants. He rescue lorn when she finds herself in trouble. Then there is the big all powerful Archangel Gabriel Lorn protector the angel she fell in love but he never returned her love or so she thought. All three men would die for her in a heartbeat.

They want to keep her safe love her protect her and god help anyone who tries to hurt or harm her in any way. All four of them will have to fight and keep one another safe because hell has open it gates and the devil himself has risen, but it just not Lucifer who wants her its the Nine who is after her as well.

I have enjoyed reading this book so much i reallt took my time which is not like me but trust me you need to slow down read take your time enjoy each word each sentence each chapter this book is beyond amazing. Grab yourself a copy what are you waiting for.

I cannot wait for book two.

So. I liked what there was of world building. This was probably what I enjoyed most about this book and I'm genuinely interested in learning more. If I read more in the series, it will be to find out more about this.
I had a lot of issues with the characters. Firstly, Lorn. Loved her in the first couple of chapters, but it felt like she turned into a weak puddle of 'heroine' as soon as she had love interests. I get that it was meant to show that her badass persona was bravado and to show her develop as a character but the pacing really foiled this and ultimately made her more annoying than sympathetic.
And she conveniently blacks out before most of the action scenes. That got old really fast and made it so hard to believe that she was anywhere near as powerful as we're supposed to believe she is.

I won't pick at the names 'Rival' and 'Redemption'. Your characters, your names. But they read like the author forgot to give them names after using placeholders.
On the subject of Rival, where the hell did he come from? And why does he instantly sign up for her harem? I think his character and their romance could have really benefited from more build up. I honestly liked his potential the most but it definitely needed more imo.

Out of all the guys, Titus had the most believable buildup with Lorn and I enjoyed getting glimpses of his background. He also got the best name out of all of the love interests lol.
By and large my biggest issues where with the pacing and with Gabriel. He's her freaking uncle. And an ancient man child. You're telling me that he's been her best friend for years, knows what she's going through, but only decides to help her after he admits he has feelings for her??? Okay. Not only creepiest uncle ever (watching and showing up after she sleeps with Titus and Rival) but also crappiest besty. The mood swings got old real quick.

On the pacing-- I agree with some of the other reviews that it feels like a bad acid trip and I think that's mainly because of the blackouts and lack of setting details. I sort of understood why they were going where they were going but outside of the the Circle's HQ, none of the settings really felt solidified and tangible. So what happened is they sort of just bled together.

What's most disappointing is this has so, so much potential but just falls flat in places because of bad editing. Many of the issues I had as a reader, could have easily been fixed with some relatively simple edits and peer reading.

Seriously though. An uncle love interest? Dude. No.

Hell is a Harem book 1 gives us plenty of paranormal with a touch of urban fantasy and just a hint of confusion. Okay, I lie, there’s plenty of confusion. I don’t mind a good read where the author demands you pay attention to be able to follow the story, but Faulk’s has stepped over that line into confusion. Don’t get me wrong, I could follow the plot and I generally enjoyed the book, but the jumbled thoughts and sentence shifts kept me disjointed from the story.

The opening scene was smack bang in urban fantasy alley but then we shifted gears later on into paranormal romance road, and suddenly we’re at reverse harem highway. I felt that the story jumped into the harem side a bit unexpected, it had only been about a day with one character before our heroine is professing her love to him (internally, but still). I did enjoy the intricate world that Faulks has created; the shifters, witches, demons, hellhounds, angels (angel - we only see one) and other supernaturals. Faulks certainly can write and can create deep characters that have more mood changes than a hormonal teenager.

Lorn is strong, someone who is used to being alone but who craves company and love. I didn’t find myself warming to her fully but I could empathise with how she was feeling. My biggest complaint with our main character (it’snot even a major thing) is that for the first chapter all we know Lorn as is Payne (I’m assuming it’s her last name) and then suddenly everyone’s calling her Lorn - the first time it was down as Lorn I was like who the hell is Lorn?? I soon realised - obviously - but then we never hear the name Payne again (scratches head).

All confusion, slight insta love, and weird name changes aside, I did enjoy Hell is a Harem and will read the next book when I’m feeling wide awake and up for a slight challenge. I enjoyed the storyline, the world building, and the different characters. It has a mature feel; we see some steamy action in the second half, and there’s plenty of murder and gore for those bloodthirsty types. Just brace yourself for plenty of mood shifts and scene changes.

The title was the first thing that made me want to read this book, it's very catchy. I wish the rest was that good.
I don't think I caught everything the author wanted her readers to catch. It feels like I was on the slightly different wavelengths that I should've been on. It was like I jumped into the series starting with the second book, it always seemed like I was missing parts of the story, or not getting some inside jokes that were told in the previous installment.
I kept muttering what the hell is going on under my breath.
The lead heroin. Well, her personality changed throughout the story, and not in the best way. She started off as this snarky, dark and self confident female, but along the way she turned into a shy, vulnerable girl, plagued with constant self doubt. Aren't the characters supposed to grow in the stories? Definitely not the other way around.
All the other characters and their connections to Lorn were a mess.
Rival just randomly appeared in the story and already he and Lorn had a silent communication that we all missed, where they established that Rival belonged to her and they are going to live together and that he's okey with sharing.
Detective Titus. One moment that man was on the revenge pass, trying to find his missing wife, right? So how did he end up being part of the RH arrangement and moving in with Lorn? What the hell?
Gabriel is a different, confusing story altogether. He needs his separate book for us to be able to figure it all out.
And their dream teem definitely needs someone smart to join in. I mean, they were invited by an unwelcoming witch to go down to a dark cellar, because apparently down there is what they are looking for. And the witch herself refused to go down! And then it turned out to be a trap? OH MY GOD who would've thought?! Such a plot twist, no one ever saw it coming! Please

I think I would've like the story, if only I was able to fully follow the plot. As it is, the story was all over the place and all the threads did not quite manage to come together in my mind. I think I might, one day, read the next book. Maybe. I don't know, we'll see.

Lorn is a witch, well that's what she's been told all her life by her grandma, Alma. Just a witch, nothing more or less. She has a crap job with The Circle, that barely keeps her alive.  Things start to change when a new drug - Sigil hits the streets. It's changing the supes and Lorn needs to find out why.  Titus is the first to offer her help with finding the source of the drug, but he wants help too.  Rival, the hell hound shows up - she called to him and he came to her.  Gabriel is her father's friend, he's been with her for years.  With the help of her harem, she will meet her father - Lucifer and figure out what is going on. Will her old lover, Redemption get in her way and stop her from meeting her father? Or will he take the fall for everything bad going on?

This is a fast-paced story that will keep you hooked from the beginning to the end. I love all 3 of her men, but Gabriel and his pink and diamonds hold a special place in my heart! OMG!  You read Lorn grow and come into more powers.  You read how the men around her are weary of her, yet are unwilling to leave her.  They become her lovers, her family.  It's what Lorn has always wanted and needed. Can she keep them safe?  Can they keep her safe?   And what about the drugs?

There are a lot of unanswered questions, that will hopefully be answered in the next book.  Like who is supplying Sigil?  Why was Redemption framed?  Why do people think Lucifer would kill Lorn?  Why is Alma up in arms?

Just be aware, that this is a cliff hanger.  There are some HEA moments, but it's not all boxed up with a pretty bow on it.  Will I be reading book #2?  Hell yes!

The next book isn't out until JUNE. But I'm fine... yep... totally fine with waiting....

In case you couldn't tell that was sarcasm, I was NOT fine after reading this whirlwind of a book! Faulks did a BEYOND amazing job with the story, the world the characters. I could NOT put this book down and am left DYING for more!!

Not only is Lorn one bad ass lady with a foul mouth I adore, and powers that can basically melt a person, she's also been through a hell of a lot, and things are just getting started.

Now the world of Harbor City. SUPER cool concept, and very well executed! Supernatural beings are out, and though things aren't perfect, they're getting there, and Lorn is trying to help. But humans still hold prejudices, and with a new drug, Sigil, hitting the streets, the body count is growing, and Lorn and her men might not be enough to stop it.

That brings me to the boys.... Oh. Hot. Damn. Though there was a couple instances that felt rushed and sudden, almost like I'd missed a few pages, I can forgive it all for the rest of the story was phe-no-me-nal. And Rival. *swoon* Damn that guy is hot. Of course Titus and Gabriel have their moments as well, Titus being the caring one with the troubled past, and Gabriel being very protective, and a bit overzealous when it comes to treating Lorn to a new living room/kitchen.

So, all in all, 5 stars. Must read for fans of darker urban fantasy. Especially reverse harem.

One caveat. I love blood and gore, violence, tons of swearing. If any of that bothers you, this may not be the read for you.

My heart is sad.

Lorn is a witch.
A pretty powerful one at that, but not many people know it.
And the ones that do, don't seem to give much of a care.
Ranked the lowest on the totem pole in The Circle's First Response Squad, Lorn is dealt with some of the most unsavory cases.
When one such case puts her in the eyes of local law enforcement, she is forced to join the humans and figure out what is going on in her beloved city.
What they find is a whole slew of problems and a family reunion she didn't know would be possible.

I wanted to give Kim Faulks another shot after reading Pestilence and not grasping her style.
However, I just don't think her writing style is for me.
I always seem more confused after reading the story than understanding what was going on.
Which stinks cause this book sounded really awesome.

And I'm not knocking the storyline or the characters.
I thought this book was very interesting, I just didn't find the writing style to my liking.

It took a lot to keep my focus.

Plus I felt like some of the thought were disjointed.
I wasn't sure where everyone stood and I'm still a little confused on some.

I know more will be revealed in the following books, but just not sure if Kim's books are for me.

I still highly recommend her stuff.
She has a unique way of writing and her characters, along with the storylines, are interesting.

I think I will just troll for spoilers to figure out what happens in the following books of the series.

Just out her stuff.
Make your own opinion.

I still think most people will enjoy these books.

Warrior and waif

Lorn is in hell. Funds are low, the company is out to get her and the work keeps piling up. And now? There's this new drug that causes supernaturals to lose their minds. Worse off is that she's forced to play nice with the cops instead of her usual solo act. But the cop she has to partner with? Ok, that helps. Titus is at least pretty to look at. But somehow she's managed to attract a hellhound and an angel into this little Scooby gang. Missing werewolves, drug lord demons, wild witches with sinister plans, ghouls and more are running them ragged but when she's finally told who her dad is, and that he's coming for a visit among this madness, is the icing on the cake. Oh Hell.

Lorn is both kick butt and fragile. A powerful combo. She's a combination of waif and warrior. I would love some more backstory, though, because I feel some of the interactions are lacking. They seem to move too fast but there's hints of more that we don't know that possibly affect them. Titus we get. Gabriel we get, although I'm sure there's more there. Rival? He pops up from nowhere and immediately is accepted. It's jarringly sudden in story that builds a little slow. But I love all the characters. Even the background characters burst with personality. This tale is full of twists and turns, heartache and humor. I can't wait to dive into the second.
